ENVIRONMENT

BATTERY PROJECT BY ALINE DUARTE, ALICE NISHIZAWA, GUSTAVO LOPES.

In 2017, year 5 students started a project that encourages people to dispose batteries in the right places. They do this to stop meat and water contamination. They warn ECCOS community where they must throw the used batteries. Students made posters to help them to know more about it and know how bad it can be throwing them in the wrong places. This only happens because as humans we learn that everything we don’t use anymore we throw in the regular trash can. People do this without even thinking what could happen after it. Normally people don’t really care, no newspaper or TV news talk too much about it. Although it is not people’s fault, they must do the right thing. The process of contamination is really fast and destructive: “The batteries are thrown anywhere and they get to the soil, the soil absorbs the liquid that the battery expel what contaminates the “water tables” and the plants. The animals eat the plants and get contaminated. Farmers kill the animals for us to eat and then we get contaminated with those heavy metals and we coud get sick”, said Amanda Garcia, a year 6 student. It affects livestock, human life, water distribution and agriculture in that area causing a huge damage. Fortunately, we have a law that says that every place that sells batteries must have a place to throw them away. It is not that hard to find a place where it has collectors. You can find them in supermarkets, drugstores, stationaries and at Colégio ECCOS, you can find boxes in the classrooms.

Hera mission is a mission to stop an asteroid to collide with Earth. Dart is a small spaceship from NASA and it is going to smash with Didymos, an asteroid that is in risk of colliding with Earth on summer 2021. When Dart collides with the asteroid it will create a hole. After that, a smaller spaceship is going to collect the Didymos DNA. Dart is going to hit into Didymos more than 6 kilometers a second, then Hera mission will map the impact crater left by Dart and measure the asteroid mass. Next, the briefcase sized CUBESATS will operate like drones and see if we can change its direction so it won’t hit Earth. Metro News, United Kingdom newspaper said that earlier this year, scientists warned that asteroids are stronger than predicted and said humanity could have a tough time destroying a doomsday space rock on a collision course with Earth. They think that is important, because if it works, Earth will be safe. This mission is very important for science community and the world itself.
