Dedication We dedicate this book to Mo Willems, to our families, friends and teachers.
Thanks We thank Mo Willems for inspiring us to rewrite his stories. We thank Ms. Vanessa and Ms. AngÊlica for reading Mo Willems’ stories and for helping us make our book.
Presentation Reading is the primary and essential condition for citizenship practice. The literary texts are the entry for the reading world. As we live in a globalized world, why not insert students into the global language reading world? This was the work we’ve developed in English classes. Students read and listened to English stories in order to expand their linguistic repertoire and improve the language use in communicative situations. Researches have proven that children learn best through repetition, as it establishes neural connections. Neural passageways in their brains become highways for learning. Children thrive on the repetition of patterns, sound and experience. The Young Writer Project in English provided an enrichment of students’ pedagogical experiences. They had the opportunity of knowing new authors, books and illustrators from other countries. Since the beginning of the year, we chose Mo Willems to study as an author and illustrator. We studied the author’s traits, which are very expressive and intense. They are amazed with the characters and they simply love the funny stories. In August, they decided to send a letter to the author, telling him how they feel about his stories and characters and showing a little bit of the work they’ve already produced. On the first week of October, we received an answer from Mo Willems! They were really excited and cheerful with his answer!
The project with Year 3 was based on the following books we read with the students: The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!, The Duckling Gets a Cookie?! and Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! by Mo Willems. These books gave us a little taste of the imaginary world, which children simply love! This experience has brought to the students many benefits, such as: a great amount of linguistic repertoire, development of the discourse, strategic and sociolinguistic competences, a great moment of interaction, when one person in the group told the stories and the others listened, or when they discussed parts of the stories because they wanted to make sure it was right. After reading the stories many times and getting to know the characters’ emotions so well, the students could organize the main dialogues in order. And when they started the writing process, these dialogues were their writing reference. When they started illustrating the book, the only reference they had were the emotions of the text they’ve written. So, there’s no need to say how hard these students worked. The magical process came to end with an amazing outcome, a book with a story that you are now invited to read and taste a little of the great and funny moments we had together.
Have fun! Ms. Vanessa and Ms. Angélica
