Reading is the primary and essential condition for citizenship practice. The literary texts are the entry for the reading world. As we live in a globalized world, why not insert students into the global language reading world? This was the work we’ve developed in English classes. Students read and listened to English stories in order to expand their linguistic repertoire and improve the language use in communicative situations. This year, Year 1 students had the opportunity of knowing authors, books and illustrators from other countries, all in the same genre studied in the Portuguese curriculum, the cumulative tales. Researches have proven children learn best through repetition, as it establishes neural connections. Neural passageways in their brains become highways for learning. Children thrive on the repetition of patterns, sounds and experiences. The project we developed with Year 1 was based on the following books we read with the students: “Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?” And “Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?” By Eric Carle. They simply loved the stories and we read them many times. Every time I read the story they tried to preview the following animal by memory. When we started writing their story, they decided to change the characters. Instead of animals, they would be the characters! When it was time to make the illustrations, we learned how the author makes it, so they could do the same. We had lots of fun producing this book and the result couldn’t be better! We invite you now to see what they saw, to feel what they felt and to enjoy as much as we did! Ms. Vanessa and Ms. Angélica
