Presentation

Reading is the primary and essential condition for citizenship practice. The literary texts are the entry for the reading world. Why not insert students into the global language reading world? This was the work we develop in our English classes. Students read and listened to English stories many times in order to expand their linguistic

repertoire

and

improve

the

language

use

in

communicative situations. Researches have proven that children learn best through repetition, as it establishes neural connections. Neural passageways in their brains become highways for learning. Children thrive on the repetition of patterns, sound and experiences. The Young Writer Project in English provided an enrichment of students’ pedagogical experiences. They had the opportunity of knowing new authors, books and illustrators from other countries. The project with Year 3 was based on the following books we read with the students: Gruffalo, Room On The Broom and Zog by Julia

Donaldson. These books gave us a little taste of the imaginary world, which children simply love.

They were amazed to see how a small mouse can cheat a terrible creature like Gruffalo, or how a witch can be so gentle and lovable with the animals, and how a dragon can always get into trouble when all he wants is to get a golden star. This experience has brought to the students many benefits, such as: a great amount of linguistic repertoire, development of the discourse, strategic and sociolinguistic competences, a great moment of interaction, when one person in the group told the stories and the others listened, or when they discussed parts of the stories because they wanted to make sure it was right. And when they started the writing process, the only thing they had

was a list of main ideas written by them. So, there’s no need to say how hard these students worked. The magical process came to end with a wonderful outcome, a book of three stories that you are now invited to read and taste a little of

the great moments we had together. Have fun!

A mouse was walking in the forest and saw a fox. The fox said, “Do you want to have lunch with me?” The mouse said, “No, thanks. I am going to have lunch with Gruffalo.” The fox asked, “What’s a Gruffalo?” The mouse described Gruffalo. “Gruffalo is big, very big! It’s strong and his eyes are orange.” The fox was afraid of Gruffalo and went away. The mouse was walking in the forest, an owl saw the mouse and came close to him, she said, “Do you want to have tea with me?” The mouse said, “No, I’m having tea with a Gruffalo. Do you know Gruffalo?” The owl said no. Then the mouse described the

monster. “Gruffalo is big and strong , and his eyes are orange.” The owl was afraid and went away! Minutes later, a snake saw the mouse and he looked good.

The snake said, “Where are you going, little brown mouse? Come and have lunch with me!”

The mouse said, “No, I’m going to have lunch with Gruffalo and the snake said, “Gruffalo? What’s a Gruffalo?’’ “What? Don’t you know? He has big claws, big teeth, and his favorite food is snake ice cream.” The snake was afraid of Gruffalo and went away. The mouse was walking in the forest and saw Gruffalo. “What monster is this?” Then he talks to the monster and the monster said he’s Gruffalo and his favorite food is mouse. The mouse said, “But I am a terrible creature, everybody is afraid of me.” Gruffalo and the mouse started walking in the forest. They saw the fox and she went away because she was afraid of Gruffalo. Minutes later, the owl saw Gruffalo and ran away too. They saw the snake and the snake was afraid of the Gruffalo and went away too. After that, the mouse said: “I’m hungry and my favorite food is Gruffalo ice cream! Gruffalo was afraid of the mouse

and ran away. The mouse was alone and happy eating his nut.

The witch had a cat, a very tall hat and a long ginger hair. One day the witch and the cat were flying on a broomstick. The wind was strong and the witch’s hat flew away. They searched for the hat. But no hat could be found. Out of the bushes a

dog appeared with the witch’s hat in his jaws, he dropped it, then said, “Is there a room on the broom for a dog like me?” “Yes”, cried the witch. The witch tapped the broomstick and woof over the fields and the forest, they flew. But away blew down the bow. It went down because of the wind. “Down”, cried the witch, and they flew to the ground. They searched for the bow. But no bow could be found. Out of a tree a bird appeared with the bow in his mouth. The witch got the bow. The bird asked, “Is there a room on the broom for a bird like me?” The witch liked the bird and then they

flew in the sky.

Over the rivers they flew and the stormy wind blew the wand. “Down”, cried the witch. And they went down to the ground. All off a sudden, a frog appeared with the wand. The frog gave the wand to the witch and said, “I am a frog as clean as can be. Is there a room on the broom for a frog like me?” The witch said, “yes”. Over the mountains they flew. The frog was jumping on

the broom and it snapped in two and down fell the cat, the dog and the frog. The witch flew in a half stick and she heard a loud roar. They saw a dragon appearing from the sky and he was breathing fire. When the animals went to the ground they

were with mud and scared the dragon. The dragon gave the witch to the animals and flew away. The witch said thanks to the animals. And she prepared one potion and BOOM! She created a new broom and they flew away very happy.

Madam Dragon had a school. Zog

tried to win a Golden star. In Year 1 the dragons were learning how to fly. Zog went to practice but he crashed into a tree. A little girl came and helped him, she put a

bandage on Zog. He said, “What a good idea!” He flew away. Zog, then, did a zig zag in the sky. One year went by, in year 2 the dragons were learning how to roar. Zog went to practice but his throat grew hoarse. Then a little girl came by again. She said, “Perhaps you’d like a peppermint to suck. “What a good idea!”, Zog said. In year 3, the dragons learned how to blow fire. Zog went to practice, but his wing tip caught alight. A little girl came and put a cast

on Zog. Zog said, “It’s a good idea” and flew.

In year 4, the dragons were learning how

to capture a princess, but Zog couldn’t capture a princess. The little girl was Princess Pearl. She said to Zog, “You can capture me.” Zog had a princess and got a golden star and Princess Pearl helped the dragons. In year 5 the dragons were learning how to fight a knight. Zog fought the knight. Princess Pearl said, “Stop the fight. I want to be a doctor.” The knight said, “Me too.” Then Zog said, “I’ll be an ambulance for the doctors.” The knight´s horse is with Madan Dragon. Zog, the princess and knight

flew away.
