Presentation

Reading is the primary and essential condition for citizenship practice. The literary texts are the entry for the reading world. Why not insert students into the global language reading world? This was the work we develop in our English classes. Students read and listened to English stories many times in order to expand their linguistic

repertoire

and

improve

the

language

use

in

communicative situations. Researches have proven that children learn best through repetition, as it establishes neural connections. Neural passageways in their brains become highways for learning. Children thrive on the repetition of patterns, sound and experiences. The Young Writer Project in English provided an enrichment of students’ pedagogical experiences. They had the opportunity of knowing new authors, books and illustrators from other countries. The project with Year 3 was based on the following books we read with the students: Gruffalo, Room On The Broom and Zog by Julia

Donaldson. These books gave us a little taste of the imaginary world, which children simply love.

They were amazed to see how a small mouse can cheat a terrible creature like Gruffalo, or how a witch can be so gentle and lovable with the animals, and how a dragon can always get into trouble when all he wants is to get a golden star. This experience has brought to the students many benefits, such as: a great amount of linguistic repertoire, development of the discourse, strategic and sociolinguistic competences, a great moment of interaction, when one person in the group told the stories and the others listened, or when they discussed parts of the stories because they wanted to make sure it was right. And when they started the writing process, the only thing they had

was a list of main ideas written by them. So, there’s no need to say how hard these students worked. The magical process came to end with a wonderful outcome, a book of three stories that you are now invited to read and taste a little of

the great moments we had together. Have fun!

One day a mouse went to the woods. A fox saw the mouse. The mouse looked good. The fox invited the mouse for lunch. He said, “No, I’ll have lunch with Gruffalo. The fox said, “Gruffalo? What’s Gruffalo?” The mouse said, “Gruffalo has terrible tusks, terrible claws, terrible tooth and

terrible jaws and Gruffalo’s favorite food is roasted fox. The fox was scared and ran away. An owl saw the mouse and the mouse looked good, she invited the mouse for a tea, the mouse said, “No, I’ll have tea with Gruffalo.” The owl said, “Gruffalo? What’s a Gruffalo?” The mouse said, “Gruffalo has knobbly knees and turned out toes.” The owl was scared and ran away. A snake saw the mouse and the mouse looked good, the snake invited the mouse

for a feast.

The mouse said, “No, I’ll have feast with Gruffalo.” “Gruffalo? What´s a Gruffalo?” asked the snake. “The mouse said, ‘’Gruffalo has orange eyes, black tongue and purple prickles all over his back.” The snake was scared and ran away. The

mouse was walking and then he saw the Gruffalo. A terrible creature and his favorite food is mouse. But the mouse said to Gruffalo, “Don’t want to eat me. I’m terrible creature”. Then Gruffalo and the mouse were walking in the woods. They saw the snake, she was scared of Gruffalo and ran away. Then they saw the owl, she was scared of Gruffalo and ran away. After, they saw the fox, she was scared and ran away. Gruffalo thought the mouse was a terrible creature, he was scared of the mouse and ran

The witch had an orange cat and a long tall hat. They sat on their broomstick and flew through the wind. The wind blew on the witch’s hat. The Witch went to the ground, but no hat could be found. A dog found the hat. The dog asked, “Is there a room on

the broom for me?” And the witch said “Yes” and they jumped on the broomstick. The wind blew the witch’s bow. The witch went to the ground. But no bow could be found. A bird found the witch’s bow and the bird asked “Is there a room on the broom for me?” And the witch said, “Yes.” and the bird flew on the broomstick.

The rain blew the witch’s wand. The witch went to the ground. But no wand could be found. A frog found the wand and he asked, “Is there a room on the broom for me”? The witch said, “Yes.” And the frog jumped on the broomstick. They were flying and the frog jumped on

the broomstick. Then, the broom broke in two. The animals went

to the ground. A dragon wanted to eat the witch. The dragon got the witch. But the animals in the mud were like a monster and the dragon

was scared. The witch said, “Thank very much.” Each animal got one thing and gave to the witch. The witch put everything on the caldron and made a new broomstick with chairs for everyone. And they flew away.
