Vulnerable - Little Brown Myotis

The Little Brown bat ( Myotis lucifugus) is the most common bat in Alberta. Its fur is glossy, and varies in colour from dark brown, golden brown, reddish, to olive-brown. The wing and interfemoral membranes are nearly hairless and dark brown or black.
It measures just 8 to 10 cm in length, weighs only 7 to 9 gr, and has a wingspan of 25 to 27 cm.

The Little Brown Myotis has a lifespan of more than 10 years, and one was even captured at 31 years old!
In the summer, females rear the pups and live separately from the males. At the beginning of winter, the males and females reunite and hibernate together. They are endangered in Canada. This status is mainly due to a fungus that causes white-nose syndrome, a disease that grows in caves where bats hibernate.
