TOPS BOTTOMS ...AND WE’RE NOT TALKING ABOUT YOUR SHIRT AND SLACKS

kay kids, sometimes in the world of relationshi ps and gay sex, few things matter more than who is doing what under the covers. So, it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty – the good stuff – and talk about the ins and outs of tops and bottoms. Now, if you are asking yourself, “The tops of what? The tops of people?” don’t sweat it, you’re not alone and we are here to help. We are talking about the active “top” role and the passive “bottom” role in gay sex. If you’re still confused, imagine a man and a woman having regular ole anal sex… Okay, now replace that woman with a gay man – he is the bottom in the sexual encounter. (That’s right, ladies, unless your man is cool with you using a strap-on on him, you are the passive one during sex, the one being penetrated, the bottom.) So, what’s the big deal is you ask? All of this seems pretty straightforward, right? Not always. There’s a fairly common dilemma gay men must deal with when starting a new sexual relationshi p: How do you tell who’s going to be pitching and who’s going to be catching when things start getting down and dirty? If

you’re drunk and feeling flirtatious,you may just flat out ask someone at the nightclub (it happens more times than you think). If you’re using one of many gay hook-up sites (and we’re not talking just Craigslist here), most men will identify their preferred role in their user profiles. But for everyone else, this territory can be tricky at times – and unless you want to spend the whole night dueling “swords” with your one-night stand, you’re going to need to figure out what the hell is going on before you take your clothes off. What happens when we assume? There is a popular saying that 95% of all gay men are bottoms. Why? Well, for one it feels fantastic, and two, some people are just dramatic and like to over-exaggerate. In reality, many do both, and a top can be anyone, a bottom can be anyone. “There are very butch bottoms and very femme tops,” says our friend Stefan. “It doesn’t have to do with how you carry yourself.” That muscular, extroverted man sitting next to you at the bar might be the world’s biggest bottom-fan, maybe even professionally, and save the sometimes awkward conversation, there isn’t a way to really know.

In a survey conducted by The Advocate magazine in 1994 (We hear your sigh at the thought of us using 17-year-old statistics, but we’re not talking about fashion here), 71% like/love topping, 72% like/love bottoming, 20% don’t like bottoming but would do it for a partner, and 8% flat out refuse to bottom. If you suck at math like some of us, this adds up to 171%, which equals overlap. That overlap is because more often than not gay men are versatile, enjoying both bottoming and topping, , but sometimes favoring one over the other (versatile-top or versatile-bottom). Here are those statistics applied to real life:

Our goal here was to educate. Have we made your life more difficult? Not being able to stereotype? Not being able to apply the “male” and “female” roles of heterosexual sex to every gay man you encounter? Good, point for us. In the end, while gay sex is not as simple as the basic male and female pairing, sexual compatibility is a universal thriller or killer. And, though it might do a gay man well to develop an intuition for these things, a way of speaking without saying a word, so many men will say, fuck it, and take a risk with the situation. If you’re into a guy and he’s into you, knowing who would be top and who would be bottom is a conversation that can be saved right before the main event. After all, the roles of top and bottom are really only applicable in anal penetration – it’s safe to say there are

plenty of other ways to enjoy a man’s company.

What the fuck? So, how does this help you if you’re hitting up the gay bars, keen on hooking up, and trying to find out what the deal is with some guy? It doesn’t. This wasn’t written for you. If you really want some help with this, go hand out with Nick Yee, a research scientist in Palo Alto, California. His study on the “correlations between sexrole preference and physical preference for partners among gay men” can tell you what height and hairiness have to do with whether a guy wants to poke or be poked.

It does not surprise me that since the moment photography was invented people have used it to meet their erotic needs. However, most of what I’ve come across in my studies of the early days of photography are the Thomas Eakins alludingto-while-not-being-too-graphic, E.J. Bellocq portrait-of-a-naked-womansitting “artistic” (homo)erotic photographs. I have always been interested in the underbelly, the blatantly pornographic, the proof that people always have and always will use sexual expression as a means of defying conventions and the rigid gender roles that come with them. Unfortunately, anything pre-1930s, pre-influx of beefcake and pin-up imagery, can be hard to find, especially gay imagery, virtually un-Googleable and only found in one of ten books I looked at in the library. Another interest of mine has been in the evolution of psychosexual beliefs and theories. The excerpts found on the following pages come from a 1949 mental health manual titled “Auto-Erotic Practices,” a bit misleading since it is 79-pages of analysis and theorization on the reasons for female masturbation and fantasization.

___________________________________________________________________________________ I remember the days of my youth when I thought the apex of gay subculture lied in the hands of the Barbara Streisand fans and Madonna impressionists; where finding a suitable man to sleep with meant having to force myself to local dive bars on an awkward Monday evening, tucked conveniently away from mainstream society; where a pair of overpriced True Religion jeans and an all-over-itself graphic, rhinestone t-shirt represented the crux of the uber-gay fashion sense. Then again, I grew up in a quaint Connecticut pseudo-city where, in a graduating class of over five-hundred students, my butch lesbian friend Nicole and I were the only two homos with the gall to call it like it is: we’re here, we’re queer, and we don’t give a fuck what you have to say about it. Safe to say, we didn’t date much back in those days. Then I moved to New York City. The fashion, the fast-pace, the forward momentum: everyone has their romance stories about when they first fell in love with this great city. A freshman in college, I thought I loved her when I found myself in a dorm where one out of every three guys was bound to be gay or questioning – and at the time I had made it my personal mission to test the statistics myself. A group of my gays and I were frequent patrons at a nightclub called Rush on West 16th street, also known as the sweaty cesspool of underage twinks and their predators, but we figured fuck it: we didn’t know any other place than this one that would admit a handful of under-21 kids. Fast forward a dozen or so regrettable hookups later and I found myself not only exhausted by the whole ordeal, but unequivocally jaded about the queer experience: crap, was this is? The greatest city in all the world with one of the highest gay populations

there is, and what did it amount to? The cruising is great, don’t get me wrong: the men in this city are drop-dead gorgeous – but with the exception of higher volume and better shag quality, was it really all that different? I would remain in this place until December of 2009, growing more and more disenchanted. I ached for something more yet had virtually no knowledge of anything greater. Until the night a friend of mine I hadn’t seen in a while asks to catch up. Sure, I thought to myself, and I had just the perfect place: a quaint little diner, affectionately known as “The Winer,” where the group of waiters had no problem serving us low-grade, box wine by the decanterfull. He tells me of a place he has discovered, a place where it’s Halloween every Sunday – and the name of this place is Vandam. It had been a while since someone had proposed to me a genuinely exciting adventure, so I was all about it; that Sunday I would meet him at his place to get ready – an ordeal, I would come to learn, takes the better part of two hours – and be introduced to the fabulous friends he had made in his two-month stint there so far. See, now I’m thinking when he means “fabulous” friends that they’re a bunch of tight-bodied little twinks like I had been used to. Ladies and gentleman, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Stepping into his apartment, I met four of the most gorgeous people I had met at that time: all dressed up like 1920s aristocrats, fur coats, equestrian helmets, clothing I wouldn’t have been able to find at any fancy boutique in the city even if I wanted to. One of the boys I remember exposing his clavicles, showing off the beautiful sparrow and flower combination tattoos on his chest – not to mention five-inch heels. Last time I checked we were going to a nightclub, and the way

they were dressed suggested this was more than just another evening shaking their asses on the dance floor. Few words can describe my first experience in what I know call the real New York City gay circuit. Imagine with me, for a moment, of a place with lights and glitter – of a place where the music’s the best you have ever heard and you listen to it with your body, never your ears. Of a place where nothing is expected of you, and everything is open to suggestion; where you can be yourself, no matter who you are feeling like that day. A place where you can meet up with some of your best friends, dance the night away, and allow all the worries of the week to melt away with every interaction. All this sounds dreadfully romantic, I realize this, but there are few places in the world I knew of at the time that offered to me what Vandam did: complete and utter release of your mind, your ego, providing a breath for you to be whoever you wanted to be. Everyone enjoys themselves in that space, but there were a handful of people I had come to admire – and those people I have named glitter bombs. A glitter bomb is someone who is so achingly fabulous, so free with themselves, their clothing, their sexuality that you can’t help but shimmer in their presence. Glitter bombs would become my obsession for the next year and a half – I had to understand them, had to hear their stories, and above all: I wanted to be just like them. Going out to these nightclubs became a weekly routine for me, and every time it was a lesson in individual freedom: how could I challenge myself to let go even further, to give in more fully and unapologetically? The world became an endless inspiration: the Christmas season inspired an outfit I called “Santa’s Little Soldiers,” my friend and I dressed in red and green military outfits with glitter accents; snowstorms inspired a “snowflake” outfit, made of recycled trash bags fashioned into shoulder plates and a environmentally friendly skirt; found artifacts as large as a pan-flute and as small as a

broken CD have inspired outfits – “looks” – that have steadily been changing my life. Stepping into a dance scene with your look is an experience to be had, few words can describe the feeling of stepping into an everchanging territory with complete security – knowing this is who you are, how you chose to present yourself, and that no one can come between you and those emotions because they belong entirely to you. Furthermore, the compliments on your outfits are an appreciation of your individual creativity and of providing energy to the crowd. This was the lifestyle I was looking for. The freedom, the inspiration, the creativity: these are all facets of the gay culture, all attributes we have been blessed with as a result of hardship in our younger years. The space, the voguing, the terminology, the cuntiness and walk: gay men and women have an entire universe of experience at their disposal. Some nights are defined by the performances, some nights by the special djs, some nights by the impromptu voguing competitions – but it goes without say, that every night is about the people. In a Williamsburg loft, packed to the ceiling with people, three bands took the stage to rock the night away. Inspired by the Riot grrrl and queercore movements and bands such as Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, and Team Dresch, these feminists, lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, queers, and punk rockers came together to entertain the crowd as Fucking Dyke Bitches, Sandy and the Rats, and Aye Nako.
