CHAIRMAO Notes from the little Purple book of COLFC Chairman, Paul Manning.

Welcome everybody to today’s game versus 1874 Northwich and welcome to the Directors, Staff, Players & Supporters of 1874, for what we hope is another great game at the TDP Stadium.

1874 will no doubt have revenge on their mind today and after a slow start they now seem to be in full flow, so today we cannot show any complacency whatsoever if we want to regain our 8 point lead at the top of the table. Today we recognize Tom Peterson’s 100th appearance for the club, which comes hot on the heels of Danny Dalton & Kevin McEllin reaching the same milestone. I talk more about Tom elsewhere in the programme, but would like to pass my own compliments onto him here. He has without question the most professional attitude of any player at the club. No moaning, no complaining, just hard graft and ability and what a lovely lad as well. He’s got everything this fella. If he could act (maybe he can!!) he would be in Hollywood. We also pay tribute today to Ben Williams, the AFC Liverpool manager who sadly passed away at the tragically young age of 41 last week, leaving a wife and two daughters. It is impossible to put into words how we all feel about this tragedy, but we asked Ben’s family what we could do at today’s match to help in anyway and they suggested that we make today’s Foodbank donation in Ben’s name and so that is what we will do, with the assistance of Supporting Foodbanks. Money, words, donations are useless at times like this but is a very small way that we can show how City of Liverpool FC genuinely feel for Ben’s family & friends.

After the most sensational start to the season, our unbeaten run came to the end last Saturday at Congleton. We were well beaten on the day and have no complaints whatsoever about the result. Well done to Congleton, who are very nice people to deal with. Craig Robinson, all his coaching staff and the entire playing squad deserve all the credit in the world but getting us to almost half way through the league season unbeaten, but now of course we have to get back on the bike straight away and start winning again. Back on 4th August we travelled to Winsford to play 1874 on the opening day of the season. We had put together a new-ish squad of players and were confident of winning, whilst acknowledging that we were away to a team that last season had reached the FA Vase semi finals and were an established force in the Hallmark Security League Premier Division. The 6 -3 win was amazing and sent home happy everybody associated with the club. We went back to the area the following Tuesday and defeated Northwich Victoria 2-1 as well and it is this strong start to the season that gave us the confidence to go on and embark on a 16 game unbeaten run.

RIP Ben Williams. #UTP

managers notes I’d like to congratulate Tom Peterson on joining Danny Dalton and Kevin McEllin on playing a 100 games for the club, it’s another great achievement!

Welcome to today’s game where we start our first of three home games on the bounce and look to put last weeks defeat behind us.

the game that we deserved. Last week our unbeaten run come to an end against second in the league Congleton who derserved the win but it’s not just the result that was disappointing our performance was far from good enough, yes we had players missing but we still should have had enough so I’m not using that as an excuse, we had too many players far from their best. It’s a wake up call maybe we all needed to kick us on again, luckily for us we can put it right in a couple of weeks when they visit us but we take one game at a time starting with today’s game against 1874 Northwich. The players have done brilliantly to come this far unbeaten let’s go again and keep supporting the lads and getting behind them, thank you for your support. Robbo

We welcome 1874 Northwich who are a good team in this division and we need to be back to our best today. Our last home game we won 5-3 against Charnock Richard which apart from the goals we conceded was a good performance against a competitive Charnock Richard team. Our win away against Padiham which is a tough place to go was a game were we had to stay patient as Padiham defended well and sat deep as well as their keeper made some great saves so we had to stay patient and got the goal to win

1874 northwich It is probably fair to say that prior to the start of the 2017/18 campaign, quite a number of 1874 fans viewed the coming season with an air of trepidation. You see, not only had the club ended the previous season in their lowest finishing position in the NWCFL Premier Division – although fifth spot was still a pretty decent placing – but allied to this, ’74 had also lost the services of ace goal-getter Tom Bailey and his haul of 31 goals was clearly going to be a difficult act to replace. So, the new management duo of Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison - who had only been in post for a few months – had a significant task to rebuild the side in such a short space of time. But writing 12 months on, we’re delighted to say that any fears supporters might have had proved to be completely unfounded. Indeed, the 2017/18 season proved to be far and away the most exciting and memorable in the short history of 1874! Ok, critics might argue that, by finishing in 7th place, the club declined from its first ever Premier League season when 3rd spot was attained. But that would be completely missing the point..... You see, 1874’s final standing was hugely influenced by an end of season run in that saw the boys in Green play no less than 26 matches between March 17 and May 12 – an average of one game around every 3 days. The reason behind this huge back-log was three-fold. In part, it was caused by the particularly harsh winter that the country experienced that resulted in close on a dozen of 1874’s away fixtures between cancelled on the bounce. However, far more memorable as far as 1874 fans were concerned were the truly magnificent runs that the team had in both the FA Cup and FA Vase - but which inevitably resulted in helping to create this mammoth back-log of league fixtures. The first milestones were set in the FA Cup when, after wins over Northwich Vics and West Didsbury & Chorlton, ’74 deservedly eliminated Evo-Stick Div. 1N side outfit Mossley in their first ever appearance in the 1st Qualifying Round. Better was to come at the next stage when National League North and former FA Trophy winners North Ferriby were dumped out by the only goal at the St Luke’s Barton Stadium. Ossett Town stood before 1874 and a place in the last Qualifying Round. The initial game in Cheshire ended 1-1, but the Greens were denied a crack at National League members Solihull Moors by the Yorkshire side on sudden death penalties. Having clearly gained an appetite for cup football, ‘The BoGo’ army then embarked on a remarkable run in the FA Vase that nearly took ’74 to the very steps of Wembley. Pre-Christmas wins over Vauxhall Motors, Congleton, Irlam, Tow Law Town, and Ashton Athletic took the club

into uncharted territory with a Fourth Round tie with NCEL high-flyers Pontefract Collieries. The match – which was switched to the home of Witton Albion – was a hugely emotional affair, coming as it did just a week after the untimely death of our inspirational and dearly loved Chairman, Paul Stockton. It is fair to say that our club has still not fully recovered from this monumental blow. But on the day the team did ‘Mr Chairman’ proud by winning a thrilling game 3-1. An added bonus was that a then record attendance of 625 turned up to see a thrilling cup-tie. A fitting memorial to Paul....... Subsequent victories over Chichester City and Leighton Town propelled ’74 to the semi-finals, where Thatcham Town lay between the club and Wembley. Thanks to an early penalty, the Berkshire club took a one goal advantage to the second leg. Another early goal in the return left ’74 with a mountain to climb, but despite a valiant performance, ‘The Kingfishers’ - who eventually lifted the Trophy by beating Stockton Town at Wembley – deservedly edged out ’74 4-2 on aggregate. As some consolation, the game was witnessed by a recordbreaking crowd of 1,697 and, judging by the feedback we received, the majority left with a hugely positive view of our club and, in particular, how we want to do things differently. You see, 1874 was formed as recently as November 2012 when disillusioned members of the then Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust - who were disillusioned over the way that ‘their’ club had been run by several successive regimes - voted overwhelmingly to form a new fans-run club. In doing so, 1874 became one of an increasing number of clubs - such as FC United of Manchester, and AFC Wimbledon - whom are owned and operated by their supporters as a not-for profit, community benefit societies. In short, ‘74 is run in a democratic, inclusive and transparent manner that puts the interests of the fans and the community we represent first and foremost. So, as we hope you now realise, 1874 is a little bit different than many other clubs.... The months immediately after the decision to create a new club proved to be very busy as we tried to convince several key organisations that ’74 was a viable proposition and could successfully operate in the National Leagues System. This hard work was rewarded when in April 2013 the news came through that 1874’s application to join the First Division of the North West Counties League had been accepted! By that time, a two-year ground-share deal had been brokered with neighbours Winsford United and allied to this

9

the former Warrington, Winsford and Ashton Athletic boss Ian Street had agreed to become 1874’s first manager. The next major landmark came on the evening of Wednesday 10 July 2013 when 1874 played their first ever game against local side Lostock Gralam. If anyone had any doubts regarding the viability of the new club, these were ended on that warm, balmy July evening when just short of 400 fans - the majority of who proudly sported the kit and colours of the new club - turned out to see the start of something different, something new and, most importantly, something that they had a direct say in! Just under a month later 1874 staged its first competitive fixture when Oldham Boro visited the Barton Stadium. Just under 500 fans turned up to see a little bit of history being made and although they didn’t see their team start with a win - the game ended 1-1 - the sheer joy and enthusiasm for ‘their’ club that was demonstrated that afternoon was both obvious and abundant. This level of support wasn’t a flash in the pan either as during our first season 1874’s average home league attendance was 320 – which put the club in the top 100 best supported clubs in non-league football. This total was boosted by the then record breaking attendance of 541 who flocked into the Barton Stadium in early October for the fans-lead ‘Bring a Mate Day’ initiative. However, there was to be no fairytale ending to the clubs’ first campaign as previous seasons’ champions Formby pipped Ian Street’s side to the second promotion spot on goal difference. But just as we had resigned ourselves to a second season playing First Division football, news came through about the sudden and unfortunate demise of ‘The Squirrels’. As a result the league management committee asked 1874 if we would be prepared to step up into the Premier Division – an offer that was readily accepted! 1874’s unexpected elevation was met with a great deal of excitement but also some trepidation. After all, would our fledgling club be able to hold their own at the higher level against so many well established Premier Division clubs? Again, our concerns proved to be unfounded. Whilst retaining the bulk of the squad who had served the club so well during its inaugural campaign, several judicious and well-judged additions were made to the squad and from the very outset it was clear that 1874 were going to be in the mix. As it transpired, the side finished in a hugely creditable third spot – which was way beyond the expectations of the vast majority of fans. Along the way, several other notable milestones were achieved, including the clubs; • First ever appearance in the FA Cup • Record victory – the 9-0 defeat of Wigan Robin Park in the FA Vase on October 5 2014 Off the field, things also progressed very well. For instance, both supporters and players enjoyed a number of other well attended social events including race nights, bowls competitions, fans forums, Christmas and end of year presentation dinners – all of which continue to this day and attract droves of supporters, players and back-room staff. Added to this is the ever popular annual 1874 Beer Festival which draws an attendance of over 300 and raises over £3000

for the club! A 300+ club has also been established and the money generated from this initiative helps to reduce the clubs reliance on gate receipts as its principal source of income. The club has also started to develop, build and nurture relationships with a number of key stakeholders. For instance, well respected local company Britannia Carpets now been the clubs’ main sponsors for each year of our existence During season 15/16, 1874 had a very successful relationship with Winsford based Neuromuscular Centre (NMC) – which provides a range of unique services and specialist advice for adults with Muscular Dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions. This was followed-up by an equally successful two-year joint arrangement with our landlords Winsford United to become joint partners to another hugely deserving local charity, St Luke’s Hospice. As part of this deal, the home stadium of the two clubs was re-named ‘The St Luke’s Stadium’ and during the past 2 years the club raised almost £12000 for this fabulous cause. The coming year will see us link up with another amazing local charity, ‘The Joshua Tree’. The partnerships were have forged with the voluntary sector is yet another example of how 1874 is demonstrating its commitment to be a ‘community’ club in terms of actions rather than words. Collections for local food banks, clothing for refugees, attendance at community events and support for other charitable causes have clearly demonstrated that we are not all about what happens between 3 and 4.45 pm every Saturday. Looking to the future, a Stadium Development SubCommittee has also been formed with the remit of finding 1874 a permanent home in or close to Northwich. The 2014/15 season also saw the club run an U21 side and several of their number have now progress to the First-team squad. More recently, 1874 have fielded sides at U7’s and U8’ level and our plan is build on the establishment of this team as a stepping stone towards the creation of other sides covering all age groups, gender and abilities. Mention of all age groups and abilities reminds us that, along with the Cheshire FA, ’74 have also played a major role in establishing a local walking football event each Wednesday morning which has proved to be hugely popular with the ‘more mature’ gentlemen of Mid-Cheshire – most of whom might had thought that their playing days were well behind them! The last 12 months also saw the club adopt a new, contemporary corporate identity - which was the brainchild of two of our talented members - and this proved to be a huge success with both our membership and the wider football and non-football world... So all in all, 1874 is a club that is on the up. But any progress that we may make will be achieved in a responsible and sustainable manner and we will not jeopardise the long-term interests of the club by spending money just in order to ensure success on the pitch. You could say that Inclusivity, Community and Sustainability is our USP, but allied to this we also want to have success on and off the pitch and – as importantly - lots of fun. And in our first five years, we think that we’ve achieved all of these aims beyond our wildest dreams!

captains notes Since our last home game we have had two away games so it’s nice to be back at home but more importantly still top of the league. Unfortunately we are not unbeaten in the league anymore but it’s been a great run and it’s up to us to start another run, it’s all about being consistent and we can’t let Saturdays result affect us and we have to dust ourselves of and kick on again as the big games keep on coming.

of the table clash and we can’t have any excuses we were beaten by the better team on the day and we just didn’t perform, there are no excuses from our end and like I said we have to dust ourselves down and crack on today, in which is another tough game. We beat Northwich 1874 first game of the season and I am sure they will be desperate to get revenge on us so we will have to be at the top of our game to get the three points. Another one of the lads reached 100 games for the club recently and what a lad he is! Tom Peterson is an unbelievable player and a great lad, his attitude is second to none and he is a pleasure to play with. He hasn’t had as many starts this season as he would like but he never lets his head drop and never gets a face on about it and when he comes on from the bench he usually does the business! Congrats Tom Peterson and here’s to another 100!

We had two brilliant wins against Charnock at home and then Padiham away which is a real tough place to go to and I think everyone has seen the highlights and how much it meant to us all when we scored the goal, the support was unreal that day and we were glad we could send all the purps home happy. Tom Peterson 100 appearances for the Purps!

It is with genuine pleasure that today we honour Tom Peterson who at the recent game v Charnock Richard made his 100th appearance for the Purps. Of all the great players we have had who have pulled on the famous Purple shirt, none have come close to having the brilliant attitude that this lad possesses. Like Danny Dalton before him, Tom has had to compete with lots of competition for his place in the squad and each and every time he has simply got his head down, worked harder and produced the goods, never rocking the boat with the Manager or his playing colleagues or using social media to whip up support from supporters. Tom is quite literally the epitome of what it means to play for the club. Making his debut in the infamous 2-1 away defeat at Daisy Hill in September 2016, as a second half substitute. The Mallett (as he is known to the squad) has of course gone on to score 51 goals for the club and is by some distance the clubs leading goalscorer, giving him a 1:2 goal ratio over 100 appearances, which is by anyone’s standards is a phenomenal return. And such a nice, humble lad as well!! There is a

recurring theme here with the players who have longevity with the Purps isn’t there? Tom’s full debut for the club came in a 5-1 home win against St Helens and of course he got on the scoresheet, to be followed by a hattrick a little over a week later away at Cheadle Town in another 5-1 win for the Purps. He scored another hat-tick in the 10-0 win at Stockport Town on New Years Eve. His best goal for the club and a Goal of the Season contender came in the 1-0 away win at Widnes in the Reusch Cup Semi Final, in which he ran clear from the half way line, before cutting back onto his right foot on the edge of the box and curling a stupendous shot into the top corner of the net – cue bedlam amongst the Partisans. I also remember a very important penalty in a tight 1-0 away win at Atherton LR as we were still chasing promotion. That season all the songs were about Daley Woods, Kevin McEllin, Allen Weston and latterly Jamie McDonald, while Tom just got on with the job of scoring important goals for us, but he started to get the recognition he deserved at the away game at Oswestry Town. The group of young lads who used to come on the coach to away games began the song “Oh Tom Peterson” and it very quickly entered the matchday songbook. Last season he again scored a hat-trick, this time against Maine Road and was again a

consistent goalscorer for the club. This season, the club re-signed Jamie McDonald and brought Craig Cairns to the club and of course we still had Forbesy banging them in for us as well, so Tom and maybe supporters were thinking “that’s the end of Tom” and after warming the bench for most of the start of the season, he started his first game against Burscough at home on Bank Holiday Monday and what did he do? Score a hat-trick in a 3-0 win hahahahahahahah Tom is the gift that just keeps on giving and having scored 12 goals already this season he is well on course to have his best goalscoring season for the club.

men believe that he could still go on and play at a much higher level of football, which hopefully he does with the Purps!

Tom Speaks!

I have talked a lot about Tom’s goals here, but he is not known as The Mallett for nothing. This lad is a physical beast, who is always more than willing to go toe to toe with opposing centre halfs or should I say willing to go Back to Chest with them, because more often than not it is Tom who is tasked with leading the line, getting hold of the ball, with a 6ft 4” grock centre half all over him, and bringing our midfield into play – he literally gets kicked from pillar to post on behalf of the club and never, ever complains. My funniest Tom moment has to be when in (I think) the Reusch Cup game against Cheadle Town he took a bad knock and eventually had to be stretchered off, but not before his Grandad climbed over the perimeter fence and went to his aid on the pitch, which was a very touching moment obviously, but at the time we were all thinking “who’s this fella and what is he doing?” We are very proud of Tom both as a person and a player and love having him at the club – his record speaks for itself and we are all hoping that he goes on to score 100 goals in 200 appearances or even more. He is still only a young lad and I know that very wise football

I’m delighted to have reached 100 appearances for the Purps. It’s been the best non-league journey I’ve been on, full of highs and lows for myself personally. It doesn’t seem long ago that I made my first appearance against Daisy Hill away, which ended in a disappointing result and look where we are now just a few short years later? It’s been great to chip in with a few goals along the way and hopefully we can continue our success and gain promotion this season. This club is only going in one direction and that is upwards. All of this wouldn’t be possible without the management and volunteers putting in countless hours over the last few years, for which all of the lads in the squad are thankful. There’re not many non-league teams with a following as brilliant as City of Liverpools’, who travel to support us, week in and week out, whatever the weather and I am proud to be a part of it all. I’d love to contribute towards the team for as long as I am required and wanted around the club and will continue to give my best!

#UTP! - Tom Peterson

With the ongoing success of our football for everyone project and our brand-new walking football initiative we are starting to put the wheels in motion for our next scheme, Kits4Kids, a scheme which aims to provide children in the local area with the equipment and kit needed to participate in football. Families are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head never mind forking out £40/£50 for a pair of boots every year plus shin pads, kit etc, if you have more than one child you’re suddenly looking at spending a few hundred pounds, and that’s before any subs need paying. An analysis by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reveals cuts to benefits and tax credits under the Tory government will see children hardest hit, forecasting that around one and a half million more under-18s will live in households below the relative poverty line by 2022. The research, which analyses the

impact of welfare reforms between 2010 and 2018, shows households with lone parents and children are set to lose an average of £5,250 – almost one-fifth of their total net income, compared to a loss of £3,000 for couples with children. This will see the child poverty rate for those in lone parent households increase from 37 per cent to over 62 per cent. These children are of great risk of being isolated and abandoned socially. The life skills learned through football help empower individuals and enhance mental wellbeing, such as increased resiliency, self-esteem and connections with others. These features of football are beneficial to people of all ages, but they are especially vital to the healthy development of young people. We must do more to increase engagement and encourage young people into football, not stand by while they are priced out of the game through no fault of their own. This is where the fantastic City of Liverpool FC Supporters come in! If there are any old kits, boots or shin pads that your son/ daughter has grown out of then please do not hesitate to contact us and we can arrange a collection or drop them off at one of the home games where one of our Community team will collect them from you.
