Welcome to everybody from Hanley Town for tonight’s 1st league meeting of the season between the two clubs. 16:27

out of the game. However, as we ourselves go into this game on the back of an 11 match unbeaten run which includes seven wins, against some of the leading opposition in the league, we can be confident that we also have the firepower to win the game! Here’s hoping for three points for the Purps today. Now, on a very sad note I would like to mark the passing of Danny Dalton Snr. Danny was a fixture at our home games especially, proudly watching his grandson Danny play for the club in the company of his own son Danny Jnr and the rest of the Dalton clan. Danny Snr was a true gentleman who will always be fondly remembered at our club, with many memories to share, for example him singing his song at the end of season party only ten months ago. I personally spent a nice day with Danny Snr & Jnr sitting right behind me on the coach up to Sunderland Ryhope in the FA Vase and I wish I had known the man for longer than I did. It is a measure of the man that all members of his family are such lovely people. He certainly set the standard! Danny will join Alan Dixon and Bill Logan in the Purps memorial space that will be created when we move to #ProjectL10 Rest in Peace Danny mate.

It seems crazy to be writing this in mid April and we have still not yet met Hanley Town or AFC Darwen in a league match, added to that, we only had our first league game vs Abbey Hey last Tuesday. Of course, this is not the first time we have met Hanley Town, having won 2-0 at home on an absolutely frigid Monday night last season in the Macron Cup. In fact, you could argue that this is the third time the clubs have met, after the original cup tie had been postponed on the Saturday at 2.45pm after the pitch had failed to thaw out enough at the Dodge Kop end and everybody had to go home. Hanley Town have had a great season so far and we go into this game just three points behind them, so that just shows you how close we have been this season to gaining a top three or automatic promotion spot. In Theo Stair and Dan Cope they have two of the league’s top goal scorers with 23 and 29 goals each respectively, plus they have an excellent defensive record, so the Purps will have to be at their best today to get anything

From our point of view we want to finish as high as we possibly can and that means beating the teams around us so we will be looking to go out and win individual battles all through the team to give us the best opportunity to get maximum points.

Good evening and welcome to this evening’s Hallmark Security North West Counties Premier Division match against Hanley Town. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all their players, staff and supporters who’ve made the trip.

in 17 games. After the recent poor weather and the fact that they played at home on Thursday, we turned up to see a pitch that wasn’t even close to being playable! Credit to the lads though as they wanted to play the game. I think more so because the prospect of a midweek trip back down to Barnoldswick wasn’t a nice one. Despite the conditions we started the game brightly and dominated the first half and had it not been for poor finishing and the wrong choice of final ball we could’ve found ourselves in a much better position than the 1-0 half time score line. After half time we came out with the same intensity as the first half and completely dominated the game. We created numerous chances and again a mixture of poor finishing and good goalkeeping kept the scoreline respectable for Barnoldswick, and only a late consolation took a bit of the shine away from a very good three points as the match finished 3-1. Onto this evening and our visitors Hanley Town. They’ve had a fantastic season and have been there or thereabouts for most of it, so we know we are in for a tough game this evening. They’ve had some really eye catching results too so we are fully aware of what we need to do to gain three points. From our point of view we want to finish as high as we possibly can and that means beating the teams around us so we will be looking to go out and win individual battles all through the team to give us the best opportunity to get maximum points. I hope you all enjoy the game tonight and come the final whistle we have registered another vital win in the closing stages of the season.

As the days get longer you’d expect the weather to get better, but unfortunately it continues to frustrate, and since our last home game against Burscough, we have been on the road. Firstly, we travelled to Manchester to face a resolute Abbey Hey side on Wednesday night. Despite missing a number of key players, the team that started the game was more than capable of claiming all 3 points but unfortunately that wasn’t to be the case. Defensively we were solid and never looked in trouble, but going forward we struggled to get any momentum on a poor surface, and our opponents took every opportunity to kick us with very little protection from another set of poor officials. Sometimes you have off days and when that happens it’s important you don’t get beat and that was the case on Wednesday as the game finished 0-0. On Saturday we made the relatively long trip to Barnoldswick Town to face a side that have been in good form of late, with their stand out result, a 6-1 win against a Widnes side that hadn’t lost

On paper this was tricky fixture as Burscough are

The only positives that can be concluded from this game were that we kept a clean sheet, helped by a solid performance in defence from Brown and a couple of great saves from re-called keeper Graeme McCall, and also that the Purps’ undefeated run has now been extended to ten games!

scrapping for every point in their quest to avoid relegation.

After 5” Forbes settled the nerves when he was found by Denson and struck a shot from outside the box that found its way into the bottom right hand corner of the net. The Purps appeared to take their foot off the gas which was a mistake as Burscough are a resilient side with some decent players. With a quarter of an hour played, Brown, who has been a rock at the heart of the COLFC defence since he joined from Witton Albion, misplaced a headed back pass and Burscough top scorer Chad Whyte nipped in to bring his side level. Just before half time it was Forbes again who thought that he’d put his side ahead when he turned in a great cross from Luke Denson but the linesmans flag was raised for offside. However, the home side did go into the break ahead when determination from Forbes near the corner flag led to a neat pass for Hazlehurst who beat a defender before coolly slotting home. HT 2-1. The positive end to the 1st half did not continue into the start of the 2nd however, and after only 4” of the restart, a free kick was swung in from Peter Henerty and it was Whyte again who rose to head home the equaliser for the Linnets. Manager Simon Burton tried to shake things up with a double substitution when John McGrath replaced Franny Smith and John Connolly made way for Dean Shacklock There were half chances for both sides and nerves began to play a part in the game. Burscough felt hard done to when Whyte was clear through and they appealed vociferously for a foul by Robinson, but no penalty was given. The ball was quickly transferred to the other end of the pitch and Shacklock had an effort cleared off the line. On 81” a great corner sent in by Denson looked to have been bundled home at the far post by Hazlehurst, however, nobody actually made contact with the ball and so what turned out to be the winning goal was deservedly credited to the full back. Foy was replaced by Alex Davies, which saw Denson switch to the left and Davies slot in at right back. There then followed a nail biting 12” including 5” of additional time and Burscough threw everything they had at the Purps defence in search of a third equaliser. COLFC though held firm and saw the game out to gain another 3 valuable points. FT 3-2

The attacking line up in principal, looked exciting with our 2 young wingers McGrath and Hazlehurst set to raid the flanks, but in truth, any attempt at playing football was spoiled by an incredibly bumpy pitch which more than suited our opponents robust style than our own passing play. Highlights to speak of from the first half were in very short supply. A couple of McGrath crosses were dangerous, one found Forbes but his header went over the bar, the other eluded all of his team mates. The only other note of interest came as the half ended, a Denson free kick went narrowly wide. HT 0-0 The second half didn’t really get going either, but on 50” a typically twisting run and shot from Hazlehurst rebounded off the keeper and Camozzi’s follow up effort whistled marginally over the bar. 5” later, the fans had something to really shout about. Following a nasty challenge by Peter Boyle on Denson, players from both sides charged onto the scene and as often described at a football match, ‘handbags’ ensued. The officials appeared confused and took an eternity to talk to a number of players. The outcome being yellow cards for both Denson and Boyle. With 15” left on the clock, Shacklock received a decent ball from McEllin, he turned and hit a great dipping shot that went just over the bar. The last 5” were probably the best of the game for both sides, but particularly the Purps, who upped the anti in an attempt to win the game. Robert Swallow cut in from the left for the hosts and smashed a shot at goal and it required a top class save from McCall otherwise all the Purps endeavour could have been in vain. FT 0-0

hanley town The clubs roots go as far back as 1882 with a recorded North Staffordshire Charity Cup game in Hanley against a strong Leek side (5-0 to Leek) with reports stating Hanley goalkeeper Morris keeping the score down with a superb display of goalkeeping. During the 1884/85 season Hanley Town and Port Vale met on a number of occasions - a North Staffordshire Federation League game ending 1-0 to Port Vale. There were two further clash games in a League Cup encounter the first meeting ending 2-2 with Port Vale winning the replay 3-1. A fourth meeting between the two teams came on 25th April 1885 in the North Staffordshire Charity Cup SemiFinal in front of 2000 spectators, again Port Vale kept their unbeaten record against Hanley Town winning the tie 3-1. In 1888/89 season Hanley Town defeated Smallthorne 4-3 in the prestigious Staffordshire Junior Cup. The club were one of the first Sentinel Cup entrants in 1892/93 season losing in the quarter-finals to eventual winners Newcastle Swifts. (The Sentinel Cup is still going strong today raising money for local charities). During this period the club had a number of players that left the club to play professional football with local sides Stoke FC(now Stoke City) and Port Vale. One player at this time was George Shutt who was also an England International. He played in England’s 4-1 win in Belfast against Ireland and also became a qualified referee and while at Stoke FC during the 1885/86 season as the game moved to professionalism threatened strike action as one of the players asking for a pay rise which they eventually secured. In 1894/95 the club entered the 3rd tier of English Football at the time The Combination League. Unfortunately they folded after one season but returned to local football a few seasons later where they again provided a number of players to professional clubs Stoke FC and Port Vale. Once again the club folded just before the outbreak of the First World War returning to local football in the late 1940’s. The present Hanley Town Football Club was founded in 1966 when a group of friends got together playing Sunday friendly fixtures based at the Trumpet Public House in the city centre (the building is now occupied by a McDonalds). The friends decided to join a Saturday league for the 1966/67 season with Owen Rhead the Club Manager winning the Longton League and the Longton Charity Cup. The 67/68 season was one of the most successful in the clubs history both the First and Reserve teams winning six trophies and being runners-up in two others. The club were renting a pitch from a local engineering firm Copestick & Farrell on Victoria Road on the outskirts of Hanley. The club lost the ground in 1971 when the engineering firm sold the land for development. The club moved into groundshares first with Eastwood Hanley and then Leek Town until the 1976/77 season when the club finally moved into their own ground at Abbey Lane a mile outside the city centre. It is from our home ground that the club made the move into a new league the Mid-Cheshire League Second Division which was in it’s second season with Joe Wills as Manager. A 4th place finish and winning the Second Division cup beating Knutsford 1-0 in the final was not a bad first season in the new league. The 1980/81 season saw the club finish in it’s worst league position for many years, although the cup competitions were a success - the new Staffordshire FA Vase was introduced by the Staffordshire FA to replace the Intermediate Cup, sixteen clubs from North and South of the County were invited to take part and Hanley Town had the honour of being the first winners defeating Chasetown over two legs. The first leg away at Chasetown ending 0-0, the return leg at Abbey Lane in front of 1000 spectators ended with Hanley winning 2-1. The League Cup was also retained after beating Linotype 2-1. The 1981/82 season saw Hanley Town finally become Mid-Cheshire League Champions in the top division by a six point margin and only two defeats in the league all season,(the league is now known as the Cheshire League). The club’s attempt to defend the Staffordshire FA Vase was almost a success as the club reached the final again only to lose over two legs 2-0 to neighbours Eastwood Hanley. The following three seasons were mediocre, but in 1986/87 and 1987/88 under new manager Peter Ward the seasons provided the club with more success. Two third place finishes in a strong Mid-Cheshire League that had local sides Kidsgrove Athletic, Newcastle Town and Alsager Town in the ranks. The League Cup was won beating a strong Kidsgrove Athletic side 3-1 after extra-time, the Leek Cup and Newcastle Charities Cup were won and the club were inaugural winners of the Congleton Floodlit Cup. The Reserves were Staffordshire Alliance League Premier Division Runners-Up and Premier Cup winners. The club started a youth team playing in the Staffordshire County Minor Youth League - the youth team finished Runners-Up in the League winning the Subsidiary Cup and the Sentinel Shield. In 1988 the club applied for membership in to the North West Counties League, but with new ground grading being introduced at the time the club failed in it’s application. With the application to the North West Counties League being rejected there was a mass exodus of players who followed manager Peter Ward to Nantwich Town who were already an established club in the North West Counties League. Former Stoke City, Port Vale and Crewe Alexandra player Terry Lees was given the task of completely rebuilding a new team and over the next few seasons gradually created a team that started to climb the league table, however due to other commitments outside football Terry had to step down in 1994 and so a slow decline ensued with the club close to folding in 1995. Ex Port Vale player Neville

Chamberlain became Manager first returning the club to the Mid-Cheshire and in 1998 we made the move back to more of a local football scene - the Midland League (now called Staffordshire County Senior League) made up mainly of North Staffordshire clubs. The clubs fortunes began to improve under the new management team of Darren Stair and Dave Price. A first cup final in 15 years was reached during the 2003/04 season the Midland League Cup Final only to lose to Norton/ Adderley Green. Success was finally achieved in 2004/05 season Hanley Town securing a remarkable four trophies in one season the first team winning the treble, becoming Midland League Champions, League Cup and Staffordshire FA Vase winners with the Reserves winning the Leek Cup. The following season the club retained the League title but losing to Ball Haye Green in the Leek Cup. For the 2006/07 season Darren and Dave stepped down as first team managers being replaced by Steve Norris and Dave Wooliscroft who regularly kept the first team in a top five position in the league, reaching a number of semi-finals in cup competitions before they too stepped down for the 2011/12 season to be replaced by Darren’s brother Colin Stair and a return for Dave Price to take charge of first team duties. That season the first team won the Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division title and the Reserves won the Division 1 title under the guidance of Mark Giblin and Steve Harrison. The 2012/13 season was one of joy and sorrow. Colin Stair and Dave Price guided the first team to a memorable quadruple of titles. The first team became Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division Champions, League Cup winners, Staffordshire FA Vase winners and Leek Cup winners. Tragically with only four league games remaining first team manager Colin Stair suddenly passed away however the team stayed strong for each other, served the Club with great pride and saw out the remaining four games to win the fourth title. It was our former Manager’s ambition to manage the team at a higher level starting in the North West Counties League First Division and for the 2013/14 season the club achieved the necessary ground improvements to make the step up to the North West Counties Football League First Division. Under the management team of Dave Price and Darren Stair in their first season at this level the Club finished a respectable 4th place in the league and reached the final of the First Division Cup only to lose on penalties against Formby. All change again for the team this year with new Manager Michael Edwards who hopes to take the team on a successful journey with the main goal being promotion in to the Evo-Stik Leagues. Last season was the biggest in the Club history as we embarked on yet another exciting venture following the acquisition of 3 new pitches which had enabled us to launch Hanley Town Academy and enter into a corporate sponsorship deal with Abzorded Events and together with providing fabulous home ground facilities for 15 teams, will play host to community multi-skill session, holiday camps and community fun days. Our fellow team mates have the expertise and experience to set us aside from all other football clubs in the City. Together we will grow and develop and will be known as Staffordshire’s leading Community Club. Only a short time in to the season and once again we have attracted a partnership deal other Clubs only dream of. At Hanley Town we are the prestigious Partners to Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation – the first Club in the Country to be recognised with such a magnificent partnership. This now gives us the opportunity and ability to play host to the Wizard of Dribble Schools and January 2016 sees us fund our first tranche of coaches – 28 in total who will all assist in the launch of our community coaching sessions – sessions that we believe will embrace all youngsters from across the City irrespective of ability or age. Our belief is that today’s youngsters are our future and we are excited to embrace more youngsters through our grassroot pyramid. Our pyramid is one that we are so proud of – we will embrace children as young as 7 and offer them the opportunity to develop through the ages with the overall aim to represent our first team playing at a semi-professional level. We are a community voluntary group with one vision – to be recognised and known as Staffordshire’s leading Community Club. • We had a dream • That dream was our GOAL • Our GOAL was to embrace juniors into our CLUB • Today a total of 15 teams have enabled us to NET that goal • We are a UNITED Club • There are no PENALTIES for being part of our successful Group • Today’s youth are our future • TOGETHER WE WILL LIVE THE DREAM

River Junior Mares Under 9’s You may remember that in October 2017 we did a fundraising collection at our home game v Congleton Town for River Junior Mares Under 9’s football team. It was to raise funds for a football tournament they were taking part in which was held in Barcelona. Well here’s an update of how things went for them from Paul Shallcross who organised the event. River Junior Mares Under 9’s Barcelona Trip 3 April – 7 April 2018 After 12 months of discussion, planning and fundraising, our Barcelona trip was finally here. The boys were extremely excited and so were the parents. There was a total of 29 of us going on the trip, which consisted of 9 players, and the rest were parents and siblings. My son Harry was so excited that he couldn’t sleep the night before, and as with any holiday, it began in the airport. The lads all looked smart in their new kit that we had bought specifically for this tournament, and they were in high spirits while we waited around for our flight. Talking of spirits, the parents were sinking a few of those themselves in the lounge, along with Beer, Cider and whatever else they sold at the overpriced bar in John Lennon Airport. The Tournament began on the evening of Wednesday 4th April, and due to the hot conditions, the games kicked off at 6pm. We played at the Catalonian FA pitches, and the facilities were just incredible, they wouldn’t have looked out of place at League Two level here. 4G pitches and covered stands all around, a café and most importantly a bar that sold Estrella for 1 Euro a bottle. The boys ended up playing against under 10’s as there was no under 9 age category. 3 of the teams we had in our Group of 4 were all from Spain and the standard was extremely high. It was a massive learning curve for the boys, and a number of factors went against them. 14

Above - The River Junior Mares Under 9’s celebrate a last minute equaliser. Pic right - Paul Shallcross with his son Harry.

We lost 3 games and drew one to eventually go out at the Group Stage, but when we equalised in the last minute of our final game, the scenes were incredible. Not only was it a crack up that The Shed would have been proud of, but the singing at the final whistle actually got a lot of the other teams supporters joining in too! It was an incredible experience, the boys loved every second of it, and when they weren’t playing football they were in the pool and on the beach. They went on a tour of the Nou Camp and we also took them to the theme park Portaventura. One thing it showed me was the gulf in funding and facilities in Spain compared to England. We currently play in the Walton and Kirkdale league on Walton Hall Park, and since Christmas, we have only played 5 times due to the state of the pitches because of the bad weather we have had. This was evident in the tournament. I am a firm believer that kids this age only improve by doing one thing, playing football. Also, due to the state of the pitches, sometimes it is hard to play the game on the floor, so kids automatically lump it long and grow up thinking that is the normal way to play the game. I would like to finish by thanking Paul Manning, Gary Johansen and the rest of the Purps Board for allowing us to carry out our fundraising event earlier in the season, with a special thanks to all the City of Liverpool fans who dug deep and helped contribute to the collection. It has created amazing memories for the lads that they will remember forever. #UTP
