CHAIRMAO Notes from the little Purple book of COLFC Chairman, Paul Manning. Welcome to the start of Season 2019/20 with the rollercoaster ride that is commonly known as City of Liverpool FC!

I, like everybody else was probably still on a massive high from winning the title in such dramatic circumstances the previous Saturday and if I was to make one excuse for our performance in the Macron Cup Final it would probably be that – everyone was still on cloud 9. Anyway, the double would have been sensational, but I am more than happy with our name in the history books as NWCFL Premier Division Champions 2018/19. Had we won the Macron Cup Final we would have become the joint most successful club in NWCFL history (by trophies won) with six, level with Warrington Town, although our six would have been won much quicker than theirs!! As it is, we are now joint second on five with Burscough, Colne Dynamoes, Vauxhall Motors & Atherton Collieries. Therefore, had we won the Macron Cup Final and won today’s Champions Cup final, we would have become THE Most successful club in NWCFL history, but we didn’t and so now we can’t – SACK THE BOARD!!! We lost some personnel over the close season and that always happens at this level. People and players come and go, but the club goes on and in this case I think anyone who has seen some of our pre-season performances will agree, we have more than replaced the players we lost, as Robbo builds a squad capable of holding it’s own in the BetVictor Northern Premier League North & West division. Welcome to our guests today from 1874 Northwich and the NWCFL and to all supporters as we kick off Season 2019/20 and good luck to all.

We have two big games at home in pre-season in the NWCLF Reusch Champions Cup against 1874 Northwich and against a Tranmere Rovers XI. Before I go on, I’d like to point out that in the furore of the end of last season Luke Denson made his 100th competitive appearance for the club, and so as has became traditional, we will make a presentation to Luke at the first home game and dedicate a match programme to him as well – well done Luke. Season 2018/19 will go down as the best in our short history so far. Our best league performance with 29 wins and just five defeats rightly earned the title and although Season one brought us the cup treble, nothing can top winning the league in my opinion – except of course winning the double, which we so nearly did! Which brings me on to 1874 Northwich our opponents in the Reusch Champions Cup Final. They deserved to win the Macron Cup Final and although it is common practice in football to only focus on the reasons why your team lost “we never did this” “we never did that” these refrains never seem to give credit to the other team and the things they did to stop you doing the things you wanted to do! After a defeat I always try and be gracious and give the other team any credit they deserve and on that day 1874 deserved the win. It was easy to be gracious about that defeat because

managers notes There has been a lot of work put in over the off season and a few changes and players leaving which was always expected Good afternoon and welcome to this afternoons game against 1874 Northwich in the Champions Cup Final. It’s going to be a good test with it only being our fourth pre season game and a chance for some of the new lads to show us why we brought them in.

but i was also expecting it so nothing come as a shock. I was happy with retaining the players we did from last season as I’m a big believer in a good dressing room and team spirit which is what won us the league so players who come in have to fit in and want to come in for the right reasons who match our ambition and what we are about. I’m not going to lie I’ve missed out on a couple of targets but we move on and we are happy with the work we’ve done and I’m excited to see what the new players bring to us. I’ve also added to my staff Joe Brookman who is highly qualified in sports science and also works full time with Everton, he has worked on the fitness with the lads through pre season and will look to keep the lads fit throughout the season in a more demanding and challenging league, we are lucky to have him on board. We’ve also added physio Nathan Sullivan who has a great CV working in non league and again we are lucky to have him on board. I’d also like to thank the staff for all the hard work in the off season that goes unseen I feel we are in a much better place and always looking to improve going into the new season and it’s one we are all looking forward to starting with today. I hope you enjoy the game and get behind the lads. Thanks

It’s the start of an exciting new season ahead with us gaining promotion to the BetVictor Northern West Division. We won the league in dramatic style but we deserved it after being top for most of the season which like I always said was an unbelievable achievement from the players as being top every team lifts there game wanting to beat you like Bootle found out against Northwich with being top going into the last game of the season. The lows of the last week of the season and the highs of winning the league took us into the Macron Cup Final that I felt was one game too many but only lost to a late goal but today gives us a chance to put that right. There has been a lot of work put in over the off season and a few changes and players leaving which was always expected with getting promoted into a more demanding league and circumstances with certain players, it’s football and we have to move

Frankly, it would have been astonishing if ’74 had been able to equal the successes of the previous 12 months. After all, even the top clubs in the country struggle to repeat their past triumphs – so why should this not be true for ’74? and further vindicated the decision that they had taken just over 6 years earlier to form a new club. You see, ‘74 was formed as recently as November 2012 when disillusioned members of the then Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust - who were disillusioned and tired of the way that ‘their’ club had been run by several successive regimes - voted overwhelmingly to form a new fans-run club. In doing so, 1874 became one of an increasing number of clubs - such as FC United of Manchester, Chester, AFC Rusden & Diamonds and AFC Wimbledon - whom are owned and operated by their supporters as a not-for profit, community benefit societies. In short, ‘74 is run in a democratic, inclusive and transparent manner that puts the interests of the fans and the community we represent first and foremost. The months immediately after the decision to create a new club proved to be very busy as we tried to convince the FA, Cheshire FA and NWCFL that our club was a viable proposition and could successfully operate in the National Leagues System. This hard work was rewarded when in April 2013 the news came through that 1874’s application to join the First Division of the North West Counties League had been accepted! By that time, a two-year ground-share deal had been brokered with neighbours Winsford United and the next major landmark came on the evening of Wednesday 10 July 2013 when 1874 played their first ever game against local side Lostock Gralam. If anyone had any doubts regarding the viability of the new club, these were ended on that warm, balmy July evening when just short of 400 fans - the majority of who proudly sported the kit and colours of the new club - turned out to see the start of something different, something new and, most importantly, something that they had a direct

say in! Just under a month later 1874 staged its first competitive fixture when Oldham Boro visited the Barton Stadium. Just under 500 fans turned up to see a little bit of history being made and although they didn’t see their team start with a win - the game ended 1-1 - the sheer joy and enthusiasm for ‘their’ club that was demonstrated that afternoon was both obvious and abundant. This level of support wasn’t a flash in the pan either as during our first season 1874’s average home league attendance was 320 – which put the club in the top 100 best supported clubs in non-league football. This total was boosted by the then record breaking attendance of 541 who flocked into the Barton Stadium in early October for the fans-lead ‘Bring a Mate Day’ initiative. However, there was to be no fairytale ending to the clubs’ first campaign as previous seasons’ champions Formby ’74 to the second promotion spot on goal difference. But just as we had resigned ourselves to a second season playing First Division football, news came through about the sudden and unfortunate demise of ‘The Squirrels’. As a result the league management committee asked 1874 if we would be prepared to step up into the Premier Division – an offer that was readily accepted! Whilst retaining the bulk of the squad who had served the club so well during its inaugural campaign, several judicious and well-judged additions were made to the squad and from the very outset it was clear that 1874 were going to be in the mix. As it transpired, the side finished in a hugely creditable third spot – which was way beyond the expectations of the vast majority of fans. Along the way, several other notable milestones were achieved, including the clubs; • First ever appearance in the FA Cup • Record victory – the 9-0 defeat of Wigan

10

Robin Park in the FA Vase on October 5 2014 Off the field, things also progressed very well. For instance, both supporters and players enjoyed a number of other well attended social events including race nights, bowls competitions, cricket matches, fans forums, Christmas and end of year presentation dinners – all of which continue to this day and attract droves of supporters, players and back-room staff. Added to this is the ever popular annual 1874 Beer Festival which draws an attendance of over 300 and raises over £3000 for the club! A 200 club – now numbering 350+ - was also established and the money generated from this initiative helps to reduce the clubs reliance on gate receipts as its principal source of income. In addition, from the very start, the club sought to develop, build and nurture relationships with the local business community. Our success in this sphere can be gauged by the fact that well respected local company Britannia Carpets has now been the clubs’ main sponsors for each year of our existence. Likewise, for the past 6 years we’ve also forged excellent relationships with our chosen locally based charity partners, which have included Ciaran’s Cause, the Winsford-based Neuromuscular Centre, St Luke’s Hospice the and children’s hospice ‘The Joshua Tree’. In addition, collections have also taken place for local food banks, homeless people shelters and a myriad of other deserving causes as well as attendance at community events. The partnerships we have forged with the voluntary sector is yet another example of how 1874 is demonstrating its commitment to be a ‘community’ club in terms of actions rather than words. Looking to the future, a Stadium Development Sub-Committee has also been formed with the remit of finding 1874 a permanent home in or close to Northwich.

The 2014/15 season also saw the club run an U21 side and since then several of their number have now progress to the First-team squad. More recently, 1874 have fielded sides at U7’s and U8’ level and our plan is build on the establishment of this team as a stepping stone towards the creation of other sides covering all age groups, gender and abilities. Mention of all age groups and abilities reminds us that, along with the Cheshire FA, ’74 have also played a major role in establishing a local walking football event each Wednesday morning which has proved to be hugely popular with the ‘more mature’ folks of Mid-Cheshire – most of whom might had thought that their playing days were well behind them! The coming season will be another landmark campaign as, for the first time, 1874 will be finally playing within the boundary of the town of Northwich having signed a 2 year agreement to share Barnton’s Townfield Lane stadium. A huge amount of work has been undertaken during the close season by both clubs to enhance the facilities for players, officials and supporters alike. So, all in all, 1874 is a club that is on the up. But any progress that we may make will be achieved in a responsible and sustainable manner and we will not jeopardise the longterm interests of the club by spending money just in order to ensure success on the pitch. You could say that Inclusivity, Community and Sustainability is our USP, but allied to this we also want to have success on and off the pitch and – as importantly - lots of fun. And in our first six years, I think that we’ve achieved all of these aims beyond our wildest dreams!

With the ongoing success of our football for everyone project and our brand-new walking football initiative we are starting to put the wheels in motion for our next scheme, Kits4Kids, a scheme which aims to provide children in the local area with the equipment and kit needed to participate in football. Families are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head never mind forking out £40/£50 for a pair of boots every year plus shin pads, kit etc, if you have more than one child you’re suddenly looking at spending a few hundred pounds, and that’s before any subs need paying. An analysis by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reveals cuts to benefits and tax credits under the Tory government will see children hardest hit, forecasting that around one and a half million more under-18s will live in households below the relative poverty line by 2022. The research, which analyses the

impact of welfare reforms between 2010 and 2018, shows households with lone parents and children are set to lose an average of £5,250 – almost one-fifth of their total net income, compared to a loss of £3,000 for couples with children. This will see the child poverty rate for those in lone parent households increase from 37 per cent to over 62 per cent. These children are of great risk of being isolated and abandoned socially. The life skills learned through football help empower individuals and enhance mental wellbeing, such as increased resiliency, self-esteem and connections with others. These features of football are beneficial to people of all ages, but they are especially vital to the healthy development of young people. We must do more to increase engagement and encourage young people into football, not stand by while they are priced out of the game through no fault of their own. This is where the fantastic City of Liverpool FC Supporters come in! If there are any old kits, boots or shin pads that your son/ daughter has grown out of then please do not hesitate to contact us and we can arrange a collection or drop them off at one of the home games where one of our Community team will collect them from you.
