CHAIRMAO Notes from the little Purple book of COLFC Chairman, Paul Manning. Welcome everybody to today’s derby clash with our landlords Bootle FC.

bit of luck!! It was nice to see Kris get the goal and even better to see how happy his family are that we have been able to get the lad back on the pitch playing competitive football. One of the reasons we founded the club was knowing the unbelievable talent pool that this City produces and that invariably has to go off and play football somewhere else in the country and a part of that is lads like Kris. At Abbey Hey all of our supporters were watching the match obviously, but some were keeping up to date with scores elsewhere in the league and none more so than at Whitchurch for their game v Congleton Town. What an amazing game that sounds like with Congleton 2-1 down and down to 8 men with 10 minutes remaining. Getting an equalizer with 8 men is unbelievable in itself but then going on to get the winner is literally beyond belief!! We ourselves won the Macron Cup with 9 men against Barnoldswick but we were 1 nil up in that game and played very well to take the game all the way to 90 minutes and then Extra Time and penalties and we were also down to 9 men when winning the Champions Cup against Atherton Collieries, again on penalties, although on this occasion no extra time was played, but to come from behind to win a game with 8 men is staggering – well done Congleton Town! Good luck to both teams today and I hope everyone enjoys the occasion.

Everybody loves Christmas and the Boxing Day fixture is a big part of football and has been since the game began really getting popular. The only problem for us being that we are still yet to play a fixture on Boxing Day! Last season’s fixture with Bootle was postponed due to the pitch being waterlogged and in our first season we did not have a scheduled boxing day fixture for some reason. So hopefully, I haven’t put the mockers on this fixture and we are ready to kick off at the traditional 3pm KO time. It was nice to get the win at Abbey Hey on Saturday and to therefore be top of the Hallmark Security League Premier Division at Christmas, but no-one is getting ahead of ourselves just yet. Abbey Hey put up their usual tough performance against us and we have seen yet again that no matter what the league table looks like, you have to earn the 3 points every single week in this league. Abbey Hey were 36 points behind us going into the game, and whilst we were never unduly troubled defensively, you would not believe that they had conceded 69 goals in the previous 19 league games at a rate of 3.63 per game, as they put up a hell of a fight to keep us out, but that’s the beauty of the 7 day rule system, as clubs can literally transform a team within a week and so it proved with Abbey Hey signing 6 players on in the week of the game. As it was, it took a moment of brilliance from our new signing Kris Owens and a bit of luck to break the deadlock, but let’s be honest we deserved that

managers notes The league is our main priority, I was happy to see us bounce back with a hard fought 1-0 win!

Welcome to today’s Boxing Day game against our local rivals Bootle FC! It’s coming on the back of quite a mixed week of results.

I was happy to see us bounce back with a hard fought 1-0 win at Abbey Hey in horrible conditions against a side who looked a lot better than their league position shows, we had to be patient as the ball was just not falling for us at times and The Congleton win was big win missed chances a few chances after them beating us away a but we take the clean sheet few weeks ago the lads stuck to and 3 points and move on. We the game plan and I couldn’t signed young Kris Owens who speak highly enough of every come on to make his debut and single one of them. This was no showed us the qualities he’s got, title decider as we are only half it’s a great signing for the club! way through the season and Looking forward to there being we’ve just got to concentrate a great atmosphere for today’s on the next game. Widnes game and one I hope you’ll was disappointing. We never enjoy! really got going in the first but Robbo we had a few chances second half and on another day we’d of won the game. The league is are main priority though so 7

bootle The original Bootle F.C. was formed in 1880 and played adjacent to Bootle Cricket Club, on Hawthorne Road. The club was Everton FC’s main rivals and competed with Everton for the prestigious place in the newly formed Football League. Because only one club per area was permitted to join, Bootle narrowly lost out, despite the fact that in the run up to the decision Everton was banned from the both the FA Cup and the Liverpool Senior Cup the previous year. However, Bootle lost out and in 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the Football Alliance, which became the newly formed Football League second division. That season was the most successful as the club finished league runners-up and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, losing to Blackburn Rovers. When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite finishing in a respectable 8th place, the club dropped out after one season due to ongoing financial problems. Ironically a new local club, Liverpool, took Bootle’s place in the second division. The possible resurrection of a Bootle team became a distinct probability in August 1947 when local councillors identified the popularity and talent on show in the ‘Bootle JOC’ league and knew the town was big enough to be put back on the football map with its own team again. For years now it had been an exporter of its many players to other clubs, both

professional and semi-professional. The promise of sponsorship money from local businesses brought great optimism and the issue of one-shilling shares further boosted club finances. After local residents were assured that the ground at Bootle Stadium (Maguire Avenue) would not be used solely as a football ground, an application to join the Lancashire Combination for the 1948/49 season was made and accepted. Club colours even posed a problem, red or blue were dismissed for fear of showing favour to either of the ‘big two’ so it was agreed that, as the original Bootle FC wore white shorts, this colour would be adopted. Players mostly came from the local league and surrounding clubs, however one player that Bootle overlooked was a tall, blonde, ex-prisoner- of-war German, Bert Trautman. Trautman, then living in Huyton, trained with Bootle at the stadium for several weeks but, with the area taking such a heavy pounding during the war, it was decided not to tempt any local bitterness and he was allowed to join St Helens Town and of course moved on to FA Cup and Manchester City folklore. They kicked off their new campaign in 1948 against Barnoldswick and district. The league was won at the first attempt. However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons and also a 9

change in Council priorities they withdrew from the league and folded during the 1953–54 campaign. In 1953, the current club was formed as Langton with Frank Doran Senior being one of the founding members. The club played in the various local Bootle leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination – winning the leagues and cups on various occasions the club requested to change its name to the latest incarnation of Bootle FC. This was accepted in 1973 and a year later ‘the Bucks’ joined the Lancashire Combination. After winning the Combination in both 1976 and 1977, Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in the first season, and was promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North-West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division (Which is now called the Premier Division). The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when the club was relegated to the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County Combination as Bucks Park on Copy Lane closed its doors for the final time. In 2006 the club, with a new ground on Vesty Road, Bootle were elected back into Division 2 of the North-West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCFL Premier Division winning the league Championship in the process. In 2009/10, the first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished a more than respectable 3rd. In 2010/11

finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rd place again in 2012. The 2016/17 season was Bootle’s best in the North-West Counties. Joe Doran’s side finished second agonisingly missing out on the title to eventual winners Atherton Collieries. The Bucks collected their highest ever points total, finishing with 92 points for the season. Doran’s side also reached the semi-finals of the Macron Challenge Cup and the Liverpool Senior Cup. The 2016/17 season was also a memorable one for striker Ryan Cox, who wrote his name into the club’s history books. The hotshot forward netted 44 times in the campaign breaking Stevie O’Neill’s record of 42 for the most goals scored by a Bootle player in a season. Since 1953 Frank Doran Senior has been the mainstay of this era for Bootle FC. Being a player, manager, secretary, grounds man, and now president of the club. And these foundations have been built on with a family and community spirit felt at the club. With the help of local businesses and the volunteers at the club, Bootle has developed into an important community hub where young and old are welcomed and interact. This is highlighted in the using of the ground – whether it is used for the bar, the 3G pitches on offer, the local tournaments and league cup finals that are played here, or the classroom hire. Bootle FC is in the heart of the community and everyone is welcome.

captains notes It’s a great feeling being top of the tree at Christmas, I think we fully deserve to be there but now we have to stay there. Everyone who we play will be wanting to beat us and the chasing pack will not stop chasing so it’s massive that we keep winning over the Christmas period.

night and I thought we done okay against a team in the league above, first half we weren’t at it at all but second half we came out and gave a good account of ourselves and probably deserved at least a draw. Saturday we beat Abbey Hey away 1-0 but it should have been about 5-0 to be honest, we had good chances but a win is a win and that is all that matters at the end of the day. A clean sheet and 3 points is exactly what we want after every game. Today is another huge game, the derby against Bootle is always a tough one and these always want to beat us, especially with us being top of the league they will be desperate to beat us. We just have to keep doing what we are doing and hopefully we will come out with the points. I hope everyone has a good Christmas and we get the three points to make it even better!

Last Saturday saw us beat Congleton in a huge top of the table clash, it was a great win for us, which extended our lead at the top and everyone who played put a massive shift in the worst weather I’ve ever played in. Congleton are a good team and will be right behind us all the way so it was good to get the three points. There is still plenty of football to play and plenty of points to be won and anyone can beat anyone in this league so we have to be at our best each game. We then travelled to the glorious Barnton to play Widnes on Monday

With the ongoing success of our football for everyone project and our brand-new walking football initiative we are starting to put the wheels in motion for our next scheme, Kits4Kids, a scheme which aims to provide children in the local area with the equipment and kit needed to participate in football. Families are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head never mind forking out £40/£50 for a pair of boots every year plus shin pads, kit etc, if you have more than one child you’re suddenly looking at spending a few hundred pounds, and that’s before any subs need paying. An analysis by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reveals cuts to benefits and tax credits under the Tory government will see children hardest hit, forecasting that around one and a half million more under-18s will live in households below the relative poverty line by 2022. The research, which analyses the

impact of welfare reforms between 2010 and 2018, shows households with lone parents and children are set to lose an average of £5,250 – almost one-fifth of their total net income, compared to a loss of £3,000 for couples with children. This will see the child poverty rate for those in lone parent households increase from 37 per cent to over 62 per cent. These children are of great risk of being isolated and abandoned socially. The life skills learned through football help empower individuals and enhance mental wellbeing, such as increased resiliency, self-esteem and connections with others. These features of football are beneficial to people of all ages, but they are especially vital to the healthy development of young people. We must do more to increase engagement and encourage young people into football, not stand by while they are priced out of the game through no fault of their own. This is where the fantastic City of Liverpool FC Supporters come in! If there are any old kits, boots or shin pads that your son/ daughter has grown out of then please do not hesitate to contact us and we can arrange a collection or drop them off at one of the home games where one of our Community team will collect them from you.
