CHAIRMAO Notes from the little Purple book of COLFC Chairman, Paul Manning.

Welcome everybody for tonight’s visit of old friends and rivals Charnock Richard FC.

win for us in December 2017. So, it’s almost a year since we have come up against each other. Again, there will be no quarter asked and none given, but off the field there is a lot of respect and help between the two sets of club officials and I genuinely wish Charnock Richard FC all the best for the rest of the season – after we have got our three points hopefully in the bag tonight of course. I’ve mentioned Kevin McEllin already here and his goal and two sending offs against Charnock, but tonight we recognize Kevin having made his 100th appearance for the Purps in Saturday’s Macron cup game against Squires Gate. Kevin is a great lad and very well liked throughout the club and we dedicate this collector’s edition matchday programme to him. Here’s to 100 more appearances mate. It is fitting also to mention that tonight’s game is Tom Peterson’s 100th appearance for us and again this is a magnificent achievement for a great club servant and we will recognize Tom at the next home match, which is scheduled to be against 1874 Northwich on 1st December. Now that Danny, Kevin & Tom are the first three members of our 100 club, we have Franny Foy also quite close to the landmark this season as well as Captain Luke Denson in with a chance of achieving it this season also (subject to cup games!) Good luck to both teams tonight but as always we are looking for three points for the Purps!

Despite us having very different histories, both clubs joined the Hallmark Security League in season 2016/17 in the 1st Division and we both had very successful seasons and secured promotion to the Premier Division at the first attempt. I can still vividly remember our first encounter in the league in September 2016 at Charnock. The physical fitness and strength of the Charnock side was a real eye opener for us and we eventually lost 4-3 that night, despite us scoring three brilliant goals, including a piledriver from tonight’s star man Kevin McEllin, who was later sent off as well!! Later in the season we again locked horns in a vital league encounter at Bootle, when a crowd of 723 (still our record league attendance) saw a pulsating 1-1 draw that secured Charnock’s automatic promotion place at our expense. On the night we were gutted and although I would hope that we were gracious in congratulating the Charnock officials and players, the disappointment was palpable. As it happens, we went on to finish fourth in the league and both the play-off semi final against Whitchurch Alport and the Play-Off final against Litherland Remyca are still two of the best days we’ve ever had as we also secured promotion, so there was a definite silver lining. In the Premier Division we did the double over Charnock last season, winning 2-0 at home, with both teams reduced to ten men (McEllin again sent off!!) and then an excellent 4-1 away

managers notes I’d like to congratulate Kevin McEllin on joining Danny Dalton on playing a 100 appearances for the club, it’s another great achievement!

be at our best to continue the good run we are on. I’d like to congratulate Kevin McEllin on joining Danny Dalton on playing a 100 appearances for the club, it’s another great achievement and like Danny is a credit to the club and a true Purp, he deserves all the plaudits he gets and probably may have been the first if it wasn’t for all his suspensions! I’d also like to congratulate everyone involved at the club as for the second month running we received the NWCFL Premier Division Club of the month for October so well done to everyone, we all need to stick together and keep doing what we are doing. We’ve started November with two wins so we’ll be doing our best to make it 3 months running, so bring on tonight a Tuesday night game at home under the floodlights is always a great atmosphere! Thank you for your support!

Saturday was another win with another clean sheet but I would of liked to have took more of our chances, I felt we played well in the first half an passed the ball around well but didn’t use the ball well enough in the second half an allowed Squires Gate to come into the game and made it closer than I would of liked but that was also credit to Squires Gate coming out and having a go. We’ll need to be better than we we were Saturday against Charnock tonight as they are a good team with players that will hurt you if you allow it, they’ll be competitive so we have to be ready an

charnock richard In 1933 the Chorley Sunday League became the Chorley Alliance League and a Charnock Richard village team was entered, but on the outbreak of the Second World War the league and team were temporarily suspended. At the end of the War, in 1945, the Chorley Alliance League was reformed along with Charnock Richard F.C. The team proved to be a tremendous success, eventually winning the league title in the 1947-48 season, losing only two games, and scoring 107 goals. This success prompted them to try and run two teams, but they ran into difficulties and the club closed at the end of the 1948-49 season. In 1955, under the leadership of Ron Wilcox, the present club was reformed, and once again played in the Chorley Alliance League. In 1957 they moved to the Preston & District League, where they have spent most of their time, apart from a brief flirtation with the Bolton Combination. In the Preston & District League they were soon amongst the honours, beating English Electric in 1957-58 to take the Guildhall Cup. Success also came in this competition in seasons 1963-64, 1968-69, and more recently in 1992-93. A number of league championships have also come their way, including winning the Premier Division in 1988-89. The 1967-68 season saw the village team take the Lancashire Amateur Shield, beating Vickers Sports Club from Barrow after a replay. Further success came in the Shield in seasons 2001-2, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2011-12. In 1993 the club moved to the West Lancashire League, and since then both the First and Second teams have gained promotion to the top division of their respective sections. They have also been successful in the West Lancashire League, winning the Premier Division Championship on seven occasions, in seasons 1997-98, 2003-04, 2008-09, 201112, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15. They also won the Richardson Cup in 2001-02, 2003-04, 2013-14 and again in 2014-15. Numerous other honours have also come their way over the

years including two recent Goldline Trophy victories at Bolton Wanderers Reebok Stadium ,the Wilf Carr Memorial Trophy in 2009, and the Northern Counties Senior Cup in 2012-13. The Reserve team have also been amongst the honours in the West Lancashire League. Following winning the Reserve Division championship in seasons 1996-97 and 1997-98, they completed a league and Houston Cup double in 2013-14, losing only one game in the entire season. The 201314 season was therefore one of the best ever seasons for the club in the West Lancashire League with both the 1st Team and Reserves completing league and cup doubles. The club has however kept its links with the Preston & District League (now renamed The Mid Lancashire League), they have an Academy team and Veterans team playing in that league. The Academy team caters for younger players making the step up into adult football. The three senior teams are now referred to as the First team, Reserve team, and Academy team. A large number of junior teams also play in the Mid Lancs Colts Junior Football League and the Central Lancashire Junior Football League, with a youth team also playing in the Lancashire Sunday Football League. The club moved to Mossie Close in Charter Lane in 1968, after playing elsewhere in the village, and the adjoining club house was opened in 1988. A new ground has recently been developed on the opposite side of Charter Lane, known as Mossie Park, which now stages West Lancashire League games, with the new changing rooms having been opened in July 2011. Charnock progressed to the North West Counties League in 2016-17 after finishing as runners-up in the West Lancashire League in the previous season and won promotion to the Premier Division of the NWCL in the first season when finishing runners up in Division 1.

Retired Residents set to improve their skills and leave lasting legacies

Dr Paul Otterson and Colin Robinson, lecturers at Liverpool John Moores University, will deliver the programme, concentrating first on IT skills and then on the history project. Dr Paul Otterson said: “There is lots of evidence that people learn new skills more efficiently when the task is relevant and meaningful to them. This is particularly so in the case of IT and so this project is a great way to help older residents improve their IT proficiency.

Residents of a Regenda Homes Independent Living scheme in Liverpool are set to use their past to improve their computer skills in the present, thanks to a £10,000 National Lottery Grant. The money will be used to improve the IT facilities at St Peter’s Court in Aigburth and pay for an oral and local history project, which aims to allow over 20 residents to document their own life stories, leaving a lasting legacy for their families.

If you would like to get involved in the project visit www.regenda.org.uk for further information.

The project takes its inspiration from the work of New York Times bestselling author and education expert, Sir Ken Robinson, whose younger brother John is a resident at St Peter’s Court.

captains notes Congratulations to Kev on 100 games for the club, again another great achievement and fully deserved.

they are beaten. Last season we done the double over them and we want to do that again, the away win at Charnock last year was probably our best win of the season. Being top of the league everyone wants to beat us, but we have to be at our very best every week and keep our standards high. Robbo and the coaching team keep setting us goals to hit each month and we keep hitting them, but there is still a lot of football to play and it always gets tough through the winter with the pitches getting worse, it makes playing football difficult so we will have to roll our sleeves up and dig in deep if we want to keep winning and I know the lads in this team will do that. Enjoy the game and thanks for the support.

Kev is a top top player and a great lad. He could easily play in leagues higher than this and has shown great loyalty to the club and he is what the City of Liverpool is all about. He is also brilliant on a night out! We are lucky to have a player like Kev playing for us. Saturday was a good win for us, we had decent chances to win by a lot more but in all honesty we didn’t get out of third gear. Squires gate are a decent side and have got some good players so it was a good solid win. Tonight is a big test, Charnock are always a decent outfit and we know what they bring, they are a tough physical side and never know when

Kevin McEllin 100 appearances for the Purps!

In July 2016 COLFC played its first ever home game against Conwy Borough in a pre-season friendly. The game can’t have been 10 minutes old and I got stopped by the gatehouse by Simon & Andrew Kearns, who said matter of factly “this central midfield is not good enough” I protested “give us a chance, it’s the 1st game / let them bed in” etc etc but the lads stuck to their guns “it’s not going to be good enough, we know a great lad who would be brilliant for you”. I left it at that and rushed off to do whatever it was I was doing. We lost 5-0 that day but nobody who turned up seemed arsed, everyone was just having a sing song and a laugh. Fast forward to September and after a good start to the season with 7 wins and 1 draw in the league, we are playing Daisy Hill, losing 2-1 in the pissing down rain and after the game, the then manager Simon Burton said “the central midfield area is not good enough, I need to strengthen it” and

I remembered what Simon and Andrew Kearns had said to me back in July. On the Monday, I thought “I wonder who that lad is Simon and Andrew were thinking of?” and so I rang Simon and asked him, and he said, “it’s a lad called Kevin McEllin who plays for The Campfield”. The Kearns’ are like an encyclopedia of the local amateur football scene, so I asked him to get me his phone number, so I could have a chat with him and Simon promptly text back with the number. I text Kevin about 3 or 4 times with no response and I had Simon Burton ringing me, desperate to strengthen his midfield, so I also enlisted the help of Allen Weston who played for the Campfield. Eventually I bit the bullet and just rang Kevin. He was working and said he would ring me back, which he did. I did my hard sell on him about playing for City of Liverpool FC and being a hero in his hometown, which he just kind of laughed at, but he did agree to speak to Simon Burton and see if we could do a deal. A deal was done and 24 hours later, there was Kevin McEllin lining up in the famous Purple, away at Cheadle Town. Two minutes

into the game - bang!!! McEllin lays out a Cheadle player with a trademark crunching tackle. We loved him from that moment on and the rest as they say is history! Within a week he’d scored an unbelievable goal and been sent off against tonight’s opponents Charnock Richard. By the end of the season he was indeed being carried shoulder high around Litherland Sports Park as predicted; A hero in his hometown!

raced off the pitch, straight down the tunnel to a warm shower, laughing, with a massive smile on his face, much to the amusement of everybody stood on the decking. At 27 Kevin could easily become the first player to reach 200 appearances for the club, although if the waist high tackles continue, it may take longer than anticipated! Well done Kevin, we are proud to have you playing for the club and hope you carry on doing the business for The Purps for an awful long time to come yet.

100 appearances later and Kevin is also undoubtedly one of the best, if not the best, player in the Hallmark Security League and his importance to our club can be measured in the games when he does not play. An absolutely great lad in real life, funny at training as he tries to play centre forward and now a father to his new born little girl, this is another person who I am proud to know and proud to have playing for our club. Like Danny Dalton, Kevin is a humble lad, who through his actions in lots of different ways has shown that he really wants to play for the club. All hands have been in his ear trying to get him to this club or that club, but even the dark days in the middle of last season, they all fell on deaf ears. There are loads of funny Kevin McEllin stories, but the best one has got to be when he got substituted in the FA Vase game with Dronfield, which took place in Storm Brian, and he

Kevin Speaks!

Its an honour and a very proud moment for me to have played 100 games for the Purps, I love playing for this club. From the day I signed right up to were we are now it’s been brilliant, and I’ve loved every minute. I’d like to thank everyone involved with the club, from the volunteers who run the club and make it work as well as it does, through to all the players, coaching staff and managers who have helped me reach 100 games. I’d also like to thank all the fans who come out and support the club week in, week out and make the club as special as it is. Although we’ve already been quite successful in my time here, I think this is still the start of a very exciting journey for the Purps. I’ll be here for as long as I’m wanted and will always give 100% for the club.

#UTP! - Kevin McEllin

With the ongoing success of our football for everyone project and our brand-new walking football initiative we are starting to put the wheels in motion for our next scheme, Kits4Kids, a scheme which aims to provide children in the local area with the equipment and kit needed to participate in football. Families are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head never mind forking out £40/£50 for a pair of boots every year plus shin pads, kit etc, if you have more than one child you’re suddenly looking at spending a few hundred pounds, and that’s before any subs need paying. An analysis by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reveals cuts to benefits and tax credits under the Tory government will see children hardest hit, forecasting that around one and a half million more under-18s will live in households below the relative poverty line by 2022. The research, which analyses the

impact of welfare reforms between 2010 and 2018, shows households with lone parents and children are set to lose an average of £5,250 – almost one-fifth of their total net income, compared to a loss of £3,000 for couples with children. This will see the child poverty rate for those in lone parent households increase from 37 per cent to over 62 per cent. These children are of great risk of being isolated and abandoned socially. The life skills learned through football help empower individuals and enhance mental wellbeing, such as increased resiliency, self-esteem and connections with others. These features of football are beneficial to people of all ages, but they are especially vital to the healthy development of young people. We must do more to increase engagement and encourage young people into football, not stand by while they are priced out of the game through no fault of their own. This is where the fantastic City of Liverpool FC Supporters come in! If there are any old kits, boots or shin pads that your son/ daughter has grown out of then please do not hesitate to contact us and we can arrange a collection or drop them off at one of the home games where one of our Community team will collect them from you.
