CHAIRMAO
Notes from the little purple book of COLFC chairman Paul Manning Welcome everyone for today’s Diaspora Derby v Skelmersdale United in the FA Cup.
Paul McNally is a good manager who we’ve always had a good relationship with and were made up for him that he’s had such a good start this season, after getting relegated last term.
Quite a few people have asked “What does Diaspora mean?” Well the answer is we don’t know, we just thought it was a funny Loads of managers in football sounding word to use!! would never have taken such a job on in the first place, never Tuesday’s 4-1 home win over mind sticking with it after relKendal was great and very welegation, but thats just what he come. Our first goal scored and did and is now seeing the green first win in the NPL was a relief shoots of recovery, so we wish after losing our opening game of him the best of luck for the seathe season!! son - after today!! It sounds mad, but thats the first time we have lost our opening game of the season and it was somewhat disconcerting. It was a funny game up at Marske, where we were lucky to only go in 1 down at half time, but then did more than enough to win all 3 points in the second half, so I was a bit fuming over not even picking up a point. Anyway, we are on the board now and the Diaspora Derby is a distraction for us all before we go into another Diaspora Derby on Bank Holiday Monday at Runcorn Linnets.
Good luck to both teams today, but here’s hoping for a Purple win and onto the excitement of the draw for the 1st Qualifying round of the FA Cup next week.
MANAGERS NOTES Hear from our championship winning manager Craig Robinson Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game in the next round of the FA Cup against Skemersdale FC! It’s a local derby which I’m sure is going to be a great game and hopefully big crowd creating a good atmosphere. For me in the FA Cup there is no easy gameand today certainly won’t be. The FA Cup is massive for all clubs at this level with the financial rewards for getting through but also the publicity the Fa Cup brings which would be massive for this football club it gives every club a chance to dream of progressing and causing an upset, for me there is no better cup competition in the world. We will have to be at our best and we want to be in the draw on Monday. Tuesday night was good to get three points in our first league home game of the season. I was really pleased the way we started the game with a real intensity to our play and passed the ball really well.
After going 2-0 up we needed to manage the game better which we didn’t and allowed them back in the game. In the second half they sat in so we had to be patient and on another day we could have scored more but we take the 3 points and move on. We’ll look to keep improving which we need to, we are carrying a few knocks so it’s a chance for players to step in and take there chance as there is competition for places. For a cold wet Tuesday you’re support was much appreciated and I hope you can continue to keep getting behind the lads and spurring them on which I’m sure we will need today! Thank you as always for your support, Robbođ&#x;‘?

SKELMERSDALE UTD Skelmersdale United Football Club has a very rich pedigree with an extensive list of honours since they were founded in 1882. The Club had its genesis in a team of players brought together by the teachers of the Skelmersdale Wesleyan Day School and it was called Skelmersdale Young Rovers, the headmaster at the time being Mr Ritson. When he left he was succeeded by Mr Forster of St Helens, a real football enthusiast. Under his guidance the team became a much stronger organisation and the name was changed to Skelmersdale Wesleyans, subsequently the minister expressed his disapproval of this and the team became Skelmersdale United. hey joined the Liverpool County Combination in 1909 and won the first of their Championship titles in 1911 they competed in the League until 1955, during which time they were Champions on 10 occasions, Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup Winners on 8 occasions and George Mahan Cup Winners 5 times. For the majority of their first seventy years the club played at Sandy Lane that is now the site of an office block. Tom Tinsley who played for just four seasons (either side of the war) created a record by scoring 214 goals this despite many games missed due to Army call ups. Between 1966-67 and 1970-71 included two Wembley appearances in the Amateur FA Cup in 1967 & 1971. The 1st final was against Enfield which, following a 0-0 draw at Wembley (with Alan Ber
rmingham missing a last minute penalty); they lost 0-3 at Maine Road, Manchester, in the replay. The 2nd Wembley date, in 1971, with Roy Rees in charge resulted in a convincing 4-1 win against Dagenham, with centre forward Ted Dicken scoring a hat trick, Andy Windsor also scoring. In between the two Wembley finals, the club had regular successful cup runs in the Amateur Cup, reaching the semi-final on two other occasions. During this period the club also won 2 Cheshire League titles and numerous other trophy’s. One of the everlasting memories of the successful Amateur Cup days was the tremendous support for the club. The phenomenal increase in crowds will probably never be repeated again, with regular crowds between 1,000 and 1,500 for league games, rising to several thousand for cup games. Indeed the record gate for the club was 7,500 for a quarter final game in March 1967 that resulted in a 1-0 victory over Slough Town. The cup final of 1967 attracted a massive 75,000, There is no doubt that the 19671971 period was a golden era for
Skelmersdale with many players progressing into the Football League. Although the club joined the Northern Premier League in 1971 it was to be an unhappy time for the club, with financial problems that the club would have hanging round its neck for over two decades and performances on the pitch were less than impressive. After joining the North West Counties League in 1982 without much success and following three seasons of just avoiding relegation to the 2nd Division in the early 90’s, the inevitable happened at the end of the 1995-96 season as the club slumped to its lowest level Russ Perkins was named as Manager and the club quickly regained promotion and the start of the long road back to the clubs former glories. winning the League Challenge Trophy in May 2000, The club left their spiritual home of White Moss Park in 2002 and eventually moved to the newly named Westgate Interactive Stadium Stuart Rudd smashed the goalscoring record netting 230 goals With Paul Gallagher in charge he took the club forward and with a second place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League in 2006. United appointed the experience manager Tommy Lawson to take the club to the new level and apart from a mid table position in 06-07 the club finished in a play-off position all but once in the next 5 seasons winning the title in record breaking style in 2012-13.They also won the Lancashire Cup in 2010. Despite challenging for the title in their first season in the NPL Premier the club lost ground and eventually finished 6th. After a good start to the 2014-15 season, the club lead the table until after the Christmas period period but United found themselves in a serious financial problem and only by the efforts of the
players supporters and sponsors the club managed to see the season through. The season however ended on a high as victories over Champions FC United and a Liverpool Senior Cup win offered the club optimism for the future. 2015-16, however was one of difficulty both on and off the field a the club was perilously close to the relegation zone for much of the season, not helped by some dramatic Winter weather that had the ground underwater and the large back fence totally destroyed, the club survived but worse was to come, the following season was spent in the bottom 4 and by January Tommy Lawson the long serving manager was sacked, replaced by former Notts Forrest and Leicester defender Alan Rogers. he assembled a young inexperienced side that battled bravely but relegation was on the cards before he joined the club, the inevitable happened and the club found themselves back in the NPL (North) section but that was not all on the news front as Landlords Chequer Properties failed to negotiate a new lease and the club agreed a groundshare with Prescot Cables from November 2017. Manager Dave Powell replaced Alan Rogers in September 2017, United avoiding relegation, There was good news in August as United announced plans for a new stadium at The JMO, just 100 yds from their spiritual home of White Moss Road. Paul McNally, former Manager of Cammell Lairds and REMYCA stepped in to replace Powell during the winter, as United failed to get out of the relegation zone, he could not help the slide and United suffered the second relegation in 3 years.
LUKE DENSON HEAR FROM OUR CAPTAIN LUKE DENSON.
I
t was great to get the three points on Tuesday night after the disappointment of Saturday. The first three points take the pressure of the lads and to get them in the second game of the season allows us to kick on now and be confident that we can beat anyone we come up against. Tuesday we played some unbelievable stuff, the pitch really suited how we want to play and it allows us to get it down and play attractive but effective football. We are looking to build from the back and play through the thirds, and get our forward players into the game and let them play with freedom and express themselves and ultimately go and win us games. Some of the goals we scored on Tuesday were fantastic and if TP’s one that hit the bar went in, goal of the season would have been over already. I was pleased for TP to get a couple of goals especially after getting one ruled out on Saturday, it gets him of the mark and hopefully he can crack on and score many more this season. I thought Daws played very well in his first start and when Mayo came on he showed how good he
he is. He’s only 20 and has got loads of potential and he will become a really a good player. Today is another game we want to win, it’s a local derby and it’s massive for the club that we progress. The FA cup is the best club competition in the world and it brings vital funds for the club and as players we want to get as far as we can to help the club out but also on a personal level you never know how far it can take you, if you get the luck of the draw you can easily find yourself in the first round proper. I’ve been lucky enough to play in the first round myself and it’s a great occasion and something you can be proud of, and I don’t see why this group of players can’t get there this year. Get behind the lads as always and hopefully together we can get into the next round and you never know where this crazy journey will keep taking us. Denno

The First 250! Throughout this season, we will begin to look back at the club’s first 250 games and reminisce on the all the key moments in the early history of football club. The Race Night – Before a ball was kicked this took place in the bar at Bootle FC. This event took place in April 2016 in an attempt to generate what were much needed funds before the start of Pre-Season.
#1 Stockport Town (AWAY) Stockport had been very supportive of our attempts to join the NWCFL on social media, one of the few, if not the only club who were, and consequently we asked them to host a behind closed doors friendly, where Simon Burton could have a look at a few players who had been to training or had been recommended to him. Present were only Paul Manning and club secretary Peter Manning plus Andrew & Alison Pendleton who were there to watch their lad Lewis play for us. Daley Woods opened the scoring for us quite early, but amidst about 15 substitutions we made, Stockport scored twice to run out winners 2-1, but the result was immaterial.
Manager Simon Burton and Assistant Manager Tom Spearritt attended and the event was organized by Paul Manning & Stuart Fitzgerald. Taking the bets for the club were Amanda Manning and Leanne Brady and there on the night were Joe Bennett, Greg Heynes, Emma Haynes, Peter McCabe, Mark Malone & John and Julie McDermott amongst a crowd of about 40 people. We held a raffle and Joe Bennett won a 1st team home shirt. Paul Manning, Amanda Manning, Leanne Brady, Joe Bennett and John McDermott were all present at the Reusch Champions Cup match v 1874 Northwich on Saturday 27th July 2019 – Our last game in the NWCFL.
Ste Longrigg signed for the club that night and we played in a borrowed kit from Runcorn Town which was light blue, which was quite significant for us, as when last season we were banned from wearing our Grey kit by the NWCFL. We thought back to that rainy night in Stockport and remembered the Sky Blue kit and we bought Sky Blue shirts as a 3rd shirt, which of course we went on to win the league in!!
#2 Prestatyn Town (away)
The starting line up for the club on this historic day was; Connolly, Lester, Blayney, Gregson, Dykes, Webb, Chojnicki, Daniels, Woods, Triallist, Joseph SUBS: Ablewhite, Martland, Triallist, Triallist, Triallist
The first official match for the club after Prestatyn made contact and invited us to play our first ever game at Bastion Gardens.
The identity of the 4 triallists may well be a mystery never to be solved! Hastily arranged mascot on the day was Tom Joynt, who was the only kid present who owned a Purps shirt!!
The match itself is a bit of a blur, but Declan Gregson scored our first official goal after he blocked a clearance and the ball rebounded in to put us 1-0 up. Prestatyn then equalized and it was 1-1 at half time. Prestatyn took the lead 2-1 after a scramble from a corner, before Billy Webb equalized for the Purps and Rob Ablewhite got us an unlikely winner from the sub’s bench. The match was effectively abandoned after a 28 man episode of There were about 140 Purps present handbags erupted on the pitch on 90 on the day, which we were made up minutes, which prompted a legendabout and we couldn’t believe ary Purps moment. we won the game either. Tony Caveney hurdled the perimeter fence to go on and join the action before an anguished cry of “Tony, NO!!!!!!” from myself thankfully stopped him in his tracks.
Prestatyn were great hosts and never made a fuss about the shenigans at the end.

Tom Peterson as he becomes the first Purp to score 50 league goals. His first of two goals against Kendal Town came in his 97th match giving him a scoring ratio of one goal, more or less every two games. Karl Clairs appearance against Kendal was his 50th all-time for The Purps. This game v Skelmersdale United in the FA Cup will be the 11th game City of Liverpool have played in this competition. In all of CoLFC Cup games we have scored 85 and conceded 48. A total of 48 Cup goals have been scored at home.
