CHAIRMAO Notes from the little Purple book of COLFC Chairman, Paul Manning.

Welcome everybody to our first home game of the 2018/19 which is against are old friends Silsden.

have delivered the maximum six points. But while everyone is excited with the way things are looking, it is still very early days. Last Season Runcorn Town won their first 12 league games before we ourselves put a stop to the winning run in the 13th match and they ended up finishing third. In Season 2016/17 we ourselves won eight, drew one and lost one of our first ten league games and we finished fourth. The point I am making is that good starts are great and very important, but they are not a guarantee of anything. It is a 38 game league season and every single game is as important as the first or second or third. We have to be this good throughout the season and then when we add up all of the points we have won, we’ll see whether it was enough for promotion. That said, we are all delighted with the two wins and delighted for incoming manager Craig Robinson and all the staff to have hit the ground running. Hopefully today we will get another performance out of the lads and progress in the FA Cup. We had a good go last year and enjoyed it, but this season we hope to go a bit farther, but of course its dead easy for me to say those words on this page, it is a completely different thing altogether for the lads to have to achieve it on the pitch.

Throughout our short history there are days scattered around which go down in the memory as great days, the kind that stand out more than the other days. We’ve had loads of boss days following the Purps and one of the best was our first trip to Silsden back in 2016. A 2-0 win that day was somewhat overshadowed by an absolute drink up we had in the Silsden club bar almost from the moment we arrived, to the moment that we left. San Miguel on draft is a dangerous game to play but the Partisans took on the challenge and drank the bar dry. At this point in our history we were gathering an unfounded reputation as an away support, but Silsden welcomed us with open arms and cheered us off in the car park as we boarded the coach for the celebratory trip home. So today we welcome Silsden; the Directors, Players, Staff and supporters to the TDP Stadium for this important FA Cup tie. Our season has started very well. We were given the toughest of all starts to the season with away trips to fellow promotion hopefuls 1874 Northwich and Northwich Victoria, but in two contrasting performances, the lads

managers notes There will be ups and downs this season, but if we stick together as one, we will be successful and achieve great things.

Welcome to our first home game of the season and welcome to Silsden AFC. I’d like to congratulate them on their promotion last season.

knew we had to make additions. The players that we have brought in, we now have a squad that will be competing to win promotion, which is our aim this season. I’m not going to make predictions but one thing I will say is I will be sending out a team to win every single game we play in and give the Partisans and the club a team to be proud of. Even though Non-league football is nowhere near as expensive as professional football I do realise that people are still spending their hard earned money to follow the team all over the North West and we all expect the team to give 100% on and off the pitch at the very least. We’ve started the season with two tough away games against teams I feel will be competing for promotion come the end of the season, so to come away with 6 points is a great start, which displayed the team spirit we have and I can’t praise them enough and I am proud of them, but I also feel that there is a lot more to come from this squad, as really the Northwich Vics game was only the second time they had all played together, so there is more to come from this team and we will only get fitter and fitter. Today is the FA Cup were dreams can come true with the ‘magic of the FA Cup’ and it’s a game that me and the lads have been looking forward to, especially with it being our first home game of the season! I’d like to ask the fans to get behind us and create an atmosphere as I know you can and I can’t thank the supporters enough for the support you have already shown to me and the players. There will be ups and downs this season, but if we stick together as one, we will be successful and achieve great things.

I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to manage this special football club. Although when the call came through from the Chairman it was completely unexpected, it was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down, to manage the nonleague club in my home city. I spoke to most of the lads and felt as though I had their total backing to take the role on and so I accepted and became only the second manager in the club’s history. The players have been unbelievable in tough circumstances this pre-season, with the managerial change coming as it did right at the start of preseason and I can’t thank them enough for sticking together and giving the club the chance to make the necessary changes and not panicking and drifting away to other clubs. To me that shows that our players have a genuine feeling for the club. The Chairman, Dunny, Tom and our new goalkeeping coach Craig have all supported me through what could have been a difficult transitional phase for everyone since I took charge. Pre-Season games were difficult with not being able to get the full squad together at all due to holidays and some injuries, but myself and the coaching staff drilled the boys hard at training to get the miles in the tank and I couldn’t wait to get the season started for real. Our squad was already very good but we did have a couple of players move on in the Summer so we

silsden SILSDEN AFC …THE COBBYDALERS 2017-18 Silsden AFC was formed in September 1904 and has seen many teams come and go playing Saturdays and Sundays. The nickname, THE COBBYDALERS comes from the old name for the “town” which was famous for nail making and textiles. The present Saturday senior team has been playing since the 1996/97 season, starting life in the Craven & District Football League Division Two after the said team had progressed through the junior section within the club. They spent 3 years in the Craven League moving up to the Premier Division and in the last year in that division, set a new record of going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. From there they joined the West Riding County Amateur League in Division Two and quickly gained promotion up into the Premier Division where they enjoyed three seasons. In season 2002/2003 Silsden set another record in going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. To add to this they also won the West Riding County Challenge Cup for the third successive season, a feat only achieved by one other club. It was clear that the team was ready for football at a higher level and in season 2004/2005 Silsden joined the North West Counties League. Without floodlights and an enclosed pitch, the Cobbydalers were forced to play their home games at Cougar Park, the home of Rugby League Club, Keighley Cougars. The Cobbydalers gained promotion to the top division of the NWCFL in their inaugural season, finishing as runners up to runaway winners Cammell Laird. They also had their most successful runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase Competitions. The club’s aim was to move back to the Keighley Road ground at the earliest opportunity and the club (Football and Cricket) embarked on a period of fund raising accruing over £100,000. Finally the development took place, with the help of a £663,453 grant from the Football Foundation, as part of its continuing investment in grass-roots football and an additional Football Foundation grant of £300,000 through the Community Club Development Programme. In May 2009 the building of a new clubhouse & changing facilities was completed and August

2010 saw the completion of the ground improvements which meant a return of Silsden AFC to its rightful place.... back in Silsden! Since then the club has continued to develop its facilities particularly with the help of the new sponsors, COBBYDALE CONTRUCTION LTD. The old 1934 stand has been repaired and fencing around the ground completed. Outside toilets have been built and the 1904 suite. The playing surface and drainage have been improved year after year and the facilities are among the best in the league. Two Ministers of Sport have visited the club in recent years. The Cobbydalers maintained their position in the top division of the NWCFL until they were relegated at the end of season 2015-16, their best year being in season 2008-09 when they finished ninth with 58 points. Season 2016-17 saw them finish mid-table in an expanded Division One but under the stewardship of, former Bradford City forward, Danny Forrest the club are hoping to challenge for promotion this season. Silsden AFC have also a progressive junior set up with boys and girls age groups running from Under 5’s right through to Under 19’s. Some age groups run two teams making this one of the largest football clubs in the area. There is a prestigious Junior Competition each year running over the first weekend of July and the club also have three ladies teams. Silsden Whitestar also play at the Keighley Road ground along with Silsden Smashers rounders’ team and Silsden Running Club also use the ground as a base. The club prides itself on being a Friendly Club with close links with the Community. Various Charity events are held every summer on the field along with the facilities being used by the local Primary School, Silsden Majorettes and the Scouts. In 2014 the club produce a booklet about the clubs players who played in and won a prestigious cup on the Western Front before three of the players were killed in action in World War One. Last season the club sent two strips and lots of football boots to Ghana where representatives of St. James Church were working.

captains notes Pre-season was a bit of an up and down affair with the resignation of Simon starting us off, but the lads stuck together and as a group of players we are delighted Robbo stood up to become manager. He has the respect of the changing room and the lads will run through brick walls for him. The lads were made up Dunny and Tom stayed on as well, as they both know the club and the players and both are brilliant coaches.

and Cairnsy done what he’s been doing for years and bagged himself a hat-trick, and then John McGrath came on and won goal of the season in the first game! A Great win. Second game was another tough one away at Vics where we had to grind out a result, we weren’t good enough in the first half and Robbo told us that at half time, but the lads came out second half and we were much better and we got the win. To be able to bring a player of Jack Hazlehurst’s ability off the bench just shows the strength in depth we now have. Two wins out of two is exactly what we wanted out of the start of the season, but we know it’s a long season and consistency will be key if we want to win the league. It’s FA cup day today which is massive for the club and we will be going out to try and win the game and progress as far as we can. Thanks to the fans for the unbelievable support so far, you will be massive for us this season and the players appreciate your support, and it’s a buzz every time we walk on the pitch and the hundreds of you supporting us.

Player recruitment over the summer has been unbelievable, the signings of Karl Clair, Adam Pepper, Joe Holt, Chris Lester, and Craig Cairns and of course Jamie McDonald really shows the clubs ambitions for the season and its now down to us players on the pitch to show how good we are. All the new signings have slotted into the changing room perfectly and the team spirit already is fantastic, I think we all know we have a special squad together now and everyone is buzzing. The first game was a tough start away to 1874 on a poor pitch but we showed how good we can be, going forward we were frightening
