NOTES FROM THE CHAIRMAN
PAUL MANNING
Welcome everybody to today’s Emirates FA Cup Preliminary round game v Emley AFC. We have a proud tradition (of sorts) in the FA Cup as we have never gone out in this round of the cup, but I suppose there is a first time for everything! In season 2017/18 we had a great little cup run, beating Padiham away 2-1 in a game fondly remembered for various reasons. It was our first ever FA Cup game, we took a massive amount of supporters to the game who were filmed for the Awayday Bible film “the problem with modern football”, everyone had a great time on the day which is now saved for posterity. Also, on the day then Padiham manager Steve Wilkes was banned from the ground so spent his time at the top of
a ladder watching the game over the wall and having a good time with the visiting Purps. Longy also nearly got decapitated in the match and went on to make a superb save with the game poised at 1-1, before Tom Peterson came on and got the winner with his first and second touches. In the next round we firstly drew with Prescot Cables 2-2 in front of a 900+ crowd on a Friday night, before absolutely annihilating them the following Tuesday 8-2 in front of an even bigger 900+ crowd at Vesty Road in what remains as one of the greatest performances in our history. We then drew NPL Premier Division side Nantwich Town at home in the next round and played in front of our first ever 1000+ crowd (1027 actually). We battered them but as the game entered injury time, John Connolly agonisingly rolled the ball across a completely empty goal line with no one on hand to tap home, before Nantwich went up the other end and hit a speculative shot that took a double deflection to beat
NOTES FROM THE CHAIRMAN
PAUL MANNING Longrigg in goal and send us out of the cup. Season 2018/19 saw us achieve our best ever cup run, beating Silsden 3-1 (crowd 630!!) Glossop NE 3-2 in a replay after an initial 1-1 draw (another great night for Purps’ supporters), Squires Gate 5-1 away (we played them 4 times that season), before succumbing to Chester 4-0 in front of our record crowd of 1806. 2019/20 saw early victories against Campion and Skelmersdale Utd (a brilliant Hazlehurst finish for the winner) before a 2-2 away draw with Warrington Town (2 more great Hazlehurst goals) and 0-4 home loss in front of our record home crowd of 1099 and the injury that effectively saw the end of Danny Dalton’s career. Last season began with a great 3-0 away win at Glossop in front of a limited crowd of 390, before one of our worst performances ever in a 0-3 home defeat to Morpeth, again in front of a covid limited crowd in the 1st qualifying round.
We have never lost an fa Cup game to a team from below in the pyramid or even at the same level us in the pyramid, and we don’t want to start today do we!! We welcome Emley AFC who have a cup history of their own, most famously going out 2-1 in the 3rd Round proper to West Ham of the Premier League in 1994 and more recently knocking much hyped Congleton Town out 3-2 in this season’s extra preliminary round. All Committee, Staff, Players and Supporters are welcome with us today and we hope for some good, clean fun and a Purps victory!! #UTP

Emley AFC Emley AFC History The history of football in Emley can be traced back to 1903. Over many decades, the original Emley AFC became the most successful nonleague team in Yorkshire. Success in the Yorkshire League, NCEL and Northern Premier League was matched by historic cup runs with a trip to Wembley in the FA Vase and the run to the FA Cup third round proper, culminating in a trip to Premier League West Ham United in 1998. That success was followed by an ultimately unsuccessful move to Wakefield to try and push on further and avoid demotion due to new ground grading regulations. When the original club dropped ‘Emley’ from the club name and disbanded the reserve team – which had continued to play at The Welfare Ground since the move – a new club playing in the village of Emley, based on the reserve team, and in the name of Emley was formed by a group of fans. AFC Emley was born in 2005 with a single season in the West Yorkshire League before elevation to the Northern Counties East League.
The new Emley really started to create headlines with a run to the 4th round of the FA Vase in 2012-13. There soon followed two successive ‘oh-so-nearly’ promotion pushes. Firstly, losing out on sudden death penalties in a play-off final in 2016 – a season that included the headline grabbing scoring exploits of Ashley Flynn with 73 goals (it would have been 78 but for the expunging of one team’s record). Then in 2016-17 the club had an even better season gaining a record 95 points but missing out on promotion on goal difference. Disappointment carried through to an unsuccessful play-off bid. Following two season of mid-table finishes, the summer of 2019 saw major developments. The club reclaimed its old name of Emley AFC, a new management team was
installed – Richard Tracey joined as Manager with Steve Nicholson, who played in the famous West Ham team, as his assistant. The club was also moved to the North-West Counties League, much to our surprise. We embraced the move; the team was rebuilt and was very well placed for promotion lying comfortably in the top 4 when the Covid-19 Coronavirus caused the termination and voiding of the season by the FA. Last season the Club successfully campaigned to move back to the NCEL and had a great start. When the season was curtailed after just 10 games Emley were top of the league with 8 wins and 2 draws. The FA’s reorganisation of steps 4,5 and 6 benefitted Emley and our PPG total was enough for promotion to the NCEL Premier Division.

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation is a charity set up in memory of Daniel Wilkinson who died in 2016 aged 24, while playing the game he loved, from an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC). Dan played football from an early age and joined Hull City AFC when he was 10, earning a professional contract aged 18. Loughborough University followed where he completed a degree in Accounting and Financial Management while playing non-league football. He was an athlete who enjoyed the gym and took his health and nutrition very seriously. He lived life to the full and had so much ahead of him. Other than feeling light-headed on a few occasions in the month before he died, he had no symptoms!
SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IN THE YOUNG (SCD) SCD is the leading cause of death in young athletes during sport and the majority of deaths occur with NO SYMPTOMS or family history. ARVC can be found in one in every 1,000 to 5,000 young adults - IF IT IS LOOKED FOR. Warning signs may include light-headedness, fainting, palpitations, swollen legs, breathlessness. Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die from previously undiagnosed heart conditions. In Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 89%.
OUR MISSION The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise awareness of SCD and to provide funding towards heart screening, defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training primarily for grass-roots sporting teams. Tragedies can be prevented through cardiac screening. It is vital that young people are identified and treated.
