NOTES FROM THE CHAIRMAN

PAUL MANNING

Welcome everybody to today’s FA Cup 2nd round qualifying round match v Farsley Celtic. This is the second time we have reached this round of the cup in our 5 attempts, which is pretty good, but on each occasion now we have drawn a National League North club. Chester knocked us out the last time we reached this round in front of our record crowd of 1806, so here’s hoping we do better this time around against Farsley. Last Saturday we all had a lot of fun against Warrington Rylands in the Northern Premier League, with a good 3-2 away win. A lot of hype surrounds Rylands after their FA vase win in unusual circum-

stances last season, and they have certainly got off to a good start in the NPL with 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss out of 7 games, but they hadn’t played anyone before we went to Gorsey Lane and while there are no easy games in this division, it must be nice to play all of the teams at the bottom of the league one after the other to start the season – would make a pleasant change for us as we seem to play all the top teams in rotation to start every season now. Anyway, we went there and done a job on them, dominating really until Louis Corrigan’s sending off and even then controlling the game with 10 men and never really coming under sustained pressure. Had we have won 4-1 or 5-1 no-one could have complained! We then went into Tuesday’s away game at Colne in very good spirits, but whilst the spirit was good,

NOTES FROM THE CHAIRMAN

PAUL MANNING the flesh was weaker after 60 minutes on Saturday with 10 men in warm weather and a big emotional outpouring at the end of the game. We just didn’t seem to have the legs although I think I am still in shock now at the 4-0 scoreline and the nature of the goals we gave away. A corner, a free-kick, a defection and in fairness a worldy, but until the first went in I felt we were playing very well. With hindsight it was an accident waiting to happen after the exertions on Saturday. Thankfully, a couple of key players got a good rest and should be ready to today’s test, as well as Adam Hughes returning after self-isolating. Today will be another tough test and then we go to Ello’s old stomping grounds at Runcorn Linnets for another difficult NPL test. Thankfully the midweek

games seem to taper off come October, but of course weather postponements and cup replays can always fill the calendar up. We welcome the Directors, Staff, Players and Supporters of Farsley Celtic to today’s game and here’s hoping for an exciting encounter and a Purple win!! #UTP

OUR OPPONENTS TODAY

Farsley Celtic The current football club was formed in June 2010 from the embers of Farsley Celtic AFC which entered Administration in June 2009 whilst in the Blue Square North and which failed to fulfil its fixtures, eventually being expelled from that league early in 2010. The old Farsley club (the name Celtic being added later) initially competed in the Leeds Amateur leagues and played its first game at the current site in 1948. Throughout the 1950s and 60s Celtic established themselves in the Yorkshire Leagues, being crowned champions in 1959/60 and 1968/69, although failing to be promoted as a result of ground regulations. A First Round FA Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground in 1974 proved to be the highlight of the decade, and the 11,000 crowd that saw the Celts lose 2-0 to a Steve Coppell inspired Rovers is still the largest crowd in the club’s history. As the Yorkshire and Midland leagues merged in 1982, Farsley began in Division One North. By the mid-80s the club was invited into the Northern Premier League. After a few largely uninspiring seasons, the new decade brought unparalleled success. In 2004/05

under the inspired management of Lee Sinnott, the team won the Unibond League Premier Division only to have points deducted as the result of Spennymoor Town going out of business and its results being expunged. The reduction in points resulted in the Celts securing only a Play-off place, losing controversially on penalties against Workington in the final. Promotion was secured the following season after a Play-off final victory against North Ferriby and in the following campaign, the club’s first in the Conference North, they reached the First Round of the FA Cup losing in a replay to MK Dons as well as securing promotion to the Conference National following a memorable evening at the Pirelli Stadium in Burton Upon Trent, when Simeon Bambrook’s last minute penalty saw the Celts beat Hinkley United 4-3.

A single season of Conference National football resulted in relegation to the Conference North. On-going financial difficulties saw the Administrators appointed in June 2009 with the club’s results expunged in March 2010 when the Administrator prohibited the club from fulfilling its fixtures. The re-formed club were placed in the NCEL Premier Division for their first season which turned out to be highly successful with a league and cup double recorded. Many of the former players remained loyal to the club and top spot was held for much of the season, with the title confirmed on the penultimate weekend of the season. The club also reached two cup finals, the NCEL Presidents Cup, in which Tadcaster won but the season ended on a positive note with the League Cup being lifted despite Farsley having to play the majority of the final with 10 men. The 2011/12 season was almost as successful, with a top five spot being secured ensuring qualification for the Play-offs. Unfortunately, the Semi-Final opponents were Witton Albion who won 3-0 and deservedly booked a place in the Final, going onto win promotion after defeating Curzon Ashton. The following league season didn’t quite go to plan with a disastrous run in the closing months, saw Neil Parsley’s side go without a win in the final eight games. Inconsistent form

before this point had all but put an end to the club’s play-off chase and a 14th place finish was all that could be mustered. On a positive note, Farsley reached the Quarter-Finals of the Doodson Sports League Cup. After beating Ossett Albion and Clitheroe, Farsley beat Premier Division opposition Whitby Town and Worksop Town before bowing out to Matlock Town in the final eight. The side made it through to the Final of the Doodson Sport League Cup against Warrington Town in the 2014/15 season at Edgeley Park. Despite a goalless score line at full time Farsley eventually lost out on penalties. The game proved to be the last for the club as Farsley AFC as they they had their original name reinstated through the close season. On May 19th 2015 the club were officially known as Farsley Celtic FC once again. 2015/16 started disastrously with only two points gained from the opening seven league fixtures and the Celts rooted in the relegation spots. The season though turned with an incredible 15 game unbeaten league and cup run, which started in mid-November with a 2-0 League Cup win over Shaw Lane and lasted until late February when Burscough won 3-0 at Throstle Nest in the league. That run put Farsley in the hunt for a play-off spot, but the pursuit of promotion was dashed during March, when a single point was

taken from a six league encounters. A topsy-turvy season ended with the Celts in ninth place, seventeen points adrift of a play-off spot.

beating Selby Town 4-1 and giving the management team of Adam Lakeland and Mark Bett their first piece of silverware at the Nest.

The 2016/17 campaign turned out to be a dramatic, but ultimately successful one. After a League season that saw the Celts battle Lancaster City all the way to the last game of the season, but in which the Dolly Blues claimed the automatic promotion spot and the title, Farsley had to do it the hard way. They overcame Colne 4-0 in the Play-off Semi-Final and had to come from behind to take the game to extra-time and ultimately a 4-2 win over Ossett Town to clinch promotion to the EVO-STIK Premier Division. The various cup competitions also proved fruitful with good runs in both the Emirates FA Cup and the Buildbase FA Trophy and the Celts won the West Riding County FA Cup, taking the trophy 4-2 on penalties after the game finished 1-1 in ninety-minutes.

2018/19 saw Adam Lakeland’s side go one better as they won promotion to the National League North; the division we had left ten years earlier. The summer of 2019 also saw a change of Chairman when Paul Barthorpe took the reins from John Palmer.

2017/18 saw Farsley return to the EVO-STIK Premier and finish a highly creditable fifth spot and in doing so, clinch the last Play-off position. Unlike the 2016/17 season there was to be no happy ending though, as the Celts lost 2-1 at eventual Playoff winners, Ashton United. Whilst there was no long runs in the FA Cup, FA Trophy or Integro League Cup, Farsley made it to the West Riding County FA Cup Final, lifting the trophy for a second successive year,

Farsley adapted to life back at level six immediately and held their position in the play-off places for the first few months of the season, having recorded notable wins at clubs such as Gateshead and Brackley Town. As the COVID-19 crisis halted the season and the final league tables were worked out on a Points-Per-Game basis, Farsley were ranked 11th. The club also reached the second round of the FA Trophy for the first time in a number of years, where they were drawn against former Football League club Barnet. After a 1-1 draw at home, the Celt Army travelled to London for the replay; the first time the club had ever played in the capital in our 112-year history. After two wasted trips to The Hive Stadium with games being postponed at very late notice, we bowed out after a 2-0 defeat, despite a spirited performance, as Barnet went onto reach the Quarter-Finals.

the opposition reer with Bradford City, before making the move to Fleetwood earlier this summer.

Adam Lakeland – Manager Lakeland is a UEFA ‘A’ listed coach who was a first team coach at Curzon Ashton when they gained promotion to the National League North. After working with the Blackburn Rovers Academy for a year, Adam became the manager of Northwich Victoria where he guided them to the EVO-STIK Division 1 North Play-offs despite a nine-point deduction. He then resigned amid financial issues for the club in December 2016 and had been out of football until he was appointed as the Celts Army Manager. In his first season in charge he saw the Celts lift the West Riding County FA Cup, and the following campaign saw the side crowned NPL Champions in April 2019. Mark Bett – Assistant Manager Adam Lakeland appointed Mark Bett as his assistant manager, the striker having spent two spells at the club as a player. Bett enjoyed a prolific non-league career also playing for Guiseley AFC, Bradford Park Avenue, Ossett Town and Curzon Ashton, before working with Adam Lakeland at Northwich Victoria.

21. Tom Donaghy – Goalkeeper Goalkeeper Tom Donaghy formally signed on loan from Fleetwood Town, the day before our season opening win at Hereford, but had spent all of pre-season with us. The loan spell is initially until January. 19-year-old Donaghy spent his youth ca-

20. Sam Kelly – Goalkeeper Teenage goalkeeper who signed for the club after a successful trial period last summer. Kelly was released from Sheffield United after being on the youth books with the Blades. Sam is currently on dual-registration terms and earning valuable game-time with NCEL side AFC Emley, but can be called upon if required. 19. Adam Barton – Defender Clitheroe-born Adam Barton is looking forward to getting involved in his first full season at the club, having signed for the club in December 2020. He made a handful of appearances last season before the early curtailment. An imposing 6ft 3in centre-half, Barton brings plenty of experience from the professional game. He made his breakthrough with Preston North End, who had signed him after nearby Blackburn Rovers had released him, at 16, due to a serious back injury. After a loan spell with Crawley Town, he made his debut with the Lilleywhites in April 2010 and went onto cement himself as a regular starter at Deepdale the following season, earning 35 appearances. A triple leg break suffered in the second half of the 2011/12 season ultimately saw him play his last game in a Preston shirt and in August 2012, he signed a three-year deal with Coventry City. He made a total of 73 appearances for the Midlands side, with the spell also including a short loan at Crawley Town, but was released at the end of the 2014/15 campaign. In summer 2015 he signed a two-year deal with Portmouth, but proved only to be a bit-part player with the South Coast side, making 26 appearances in just over a

season, with a transfer north of the border to Scottish Premiership side Partick Thistle following in August 2016. He adapted well to the Scottish League, winning the SPL Player of the Month award in October 2016, before being named the Partick Thistle Player of the Season for the 2016/17 campaign. After 77 appearances with the club, following their relegation from the Premiership, Barton transferred to Dundee United in summer 2018. However he only made 10 appearances for United and after a loan spell in Wales with Connah’s Quay Nomads, switched to National League side Wrexham in July 2019. Despite signing a two-year deal with the Welsh side, he left Wrexham in February 2020, linking up with Farsley later in the year. 25. Sam Bird – Defender 18-year-old right back Sam Bird becomes the latest Fleetwood Town youngster to join the club on loan, after signing a one-month youth loan in August. The teenager signed professional terms for the Lancashire club in April, and impressed in a pre-season friendly against the Celts earlier this summer. He made his debut for the club in the 1-1 home draw with Blyth Spartans, playing the full 90 minutes. 6. Adam Clayton – Defender Now a Farsley stalwart, central defender Adam Clayton is entering his seventh season with the club, having arrived in October 2015 from Bradford Park Avenue. He made his debut in the home match with Spennymoor Town that season. Clayton was integral in the 2018/19 promotion winning campaign. He contributed 14 goals from defence in 2017/18. Now Farsley’s longest serving player, last winter Clayton became the new club’s (post-2010) all-time highest appearance maker. After early career spells with Ossett Town, Stocksbridge Park Steels and Garforth Town, Clayton crafted his reputation with a four year spell at Bradford Park Avenue. 5. Danny Ellis – Defender Club captain Danny Ellis joined prior to the

2017/18 campaign after leaving Harrogate Town. The tough-tackling centre-half chose to leave Harrogate after they turned full-time. Now coming into his fifth season at Farsley, Ellis has become a keystone in Farsley’s backline. The 25-year-old began his career with Bradford City as a youngster and after spells at Stockport County and Droylsden, make his name at nearby Guiseley AFC, where he played for ten years, becoming a cult-hero at the North-West Leeds club, racking up over 400 appearances in the process. He remains the manager of Guiseley’s academy side, whilst playing for Farsley Celtic. 3. Will Hayhurst – Defender Signed in summer 2018 from Warrington Town, Hayhurst brings Football League experience to the squad as he started his career at Preston North End, achieving promotion to the Championship with the Lancashire club in 2015. He also had spells at York City and Notts County, before injury saw him released. He returned to the game in January 2017, helping Warrington to the Play-offs, before committing to the Celt Army. Possessing a great left foot, Will can be very dangerous from set pieces. Now entering his fourth season at Farsley, the 27-year-old has shown he is either comfortable at left-back or further up on the left wing. 2. Jordan Richards – Defender Full back Richards is entering his third season at Farsley, having signed for the club in the summer of 2019. The 28-year-old has proven himself as a safe pair of hands at right-back and has been an almost ever-present in that position for the past two seasons. The Sunderland born defender signed for Farsley following a season long spell with Southport where he featured regularly. Born in the North East he started his career at Hartlepool United before spells with Darlington and AFC Fylde. 8. Chris Atkinson – Midfielder Halifax born midfielder, Chris Atkinson, started his career with Huddersfield Town, having been with the Academy since he

was seven years of age. He made his first team debut in the FA Cup win over Macclesfield Town in November 2010 and was loaned out several times before signing ‘permanently’ for Crewe Alexandra in 2014. Chris made 37 first team appearances for the Gresty Road side over the next two seasons and made the move to Moor Lane in October 2016 joining Salford City. He signed for the Celts on loan at the end of January 2017 making his debut against Goole AFC in the Integro League Cup Second Round fixture at The Citadel. Chris has proven himself as an integral part of the squad over the past three and a half seasons, being a near-even present in the team during that time. 15. Joel Byrom – Midfielder A real coup of a signing for the Celt Army last summer, Adam Lakeland landed the signing of fellow Lancastrian Byrom, who last featured for League Two side Stevenage in the 2019/20 campaign. Lakeland managed to convince the 34-yearold to come to the Citadel, after the pair had previously coached together at Blackburn Rovers a few years ago. Oswaldtwistleborn Byrom, who actually progressed through the Youth Academy at Rovers, has gone onto make almost 300 appearances in the Football League. Following a brief stint at Accrington Stanley, Byrom worked his way up the non-league ladder with Clitheroe, Southport, Northwich Victoria and Crawley Town, who he helped earn Football League status with in 2010. After two more seasons with the Hertfordshire side, Byrom moved onto Preston North End in 2012, during which time he had a loan spell at Oldham Athletic. After limited game time with the Lilleywhites, Byrom moved onto Northampton Town in 2014 and went onto make 87 appearances during a three year spell with the Cobblers. A switch to Mansfield Town followed in 2016, and after two years with the Nottinghamshire side, he moved onto Stevenage in summer 2018. Sadly a knee injury ruled Byrom out early on last season, but with the early curtailment of the campaign, he didn’t miss too much football and is now eager to prove his worth

in the Farsley side. 23. Mitchell Fox – Midfielder Mitchell Fox earned a first-team non-contract this season after impressing in the youth academy. 22-year-ol Fox, is a regular in central midfield for the academy, but has been utilised as a wing-back in Adam Lakeland’s first team. 12. Will Longbottom – Midfielder Winger Will Longbottom joined the club just before the start of the campaign, following a successful trial spell during pre-season. The 22-year-old arrives with Football League experience to his name, after making 12 senior appearances at Doncaster Rovers, a club who he progressed through the youth ranks with. He’s also spent time on loan with Kidderminster Harriers and Gainsborough Trinity. He’s also had spells with Waterford in Ireland, and Bradford Park Avenue. 10. Ben McKenna – Midfielder Exciting forward player Ben McKenna joined Farsley in June, following a two year spell at Spennymoor Town. The skilful 28-year-old, who is comfortable playing in a range of attacking midfield positions, began his footballing journey in the youth section of hometown club Burnley. A switch to Carlisle followed in summer 2009, as he went onto make his first professional appearances for the Cumbrian side during the 2010/11 season. During his time at Carlisle, McKenna earned a handful of caps for Northern Ireland at youth level. Following a loan spell in Scotland with Annan Athletic in spring 2012, it was announced that he would be released by Carlisle that summer, and he went onto sign for Workington later that season. He’s since garnered experience on the non-league circuit with spells at Stalybridge Celtic, Ashton United, Bradford Park Avenue, Southport, Stockport County, Curzon Ashton and Chester, before signing for Spennymoor in summer 2019. 7. Dave Syers – Midfielder

Leeds born midfielder Syers, started his career at Ossett Albion playing for a number of teams in West Yorkshire including Harrogate Town, Farsley and Guiseley AFC. After shining as one of Farsley’s best players in the ill-fated 2009/10 season, when the old club was wound up, he earned his first professional contract with Bradford City in summer 2010, after impressing during a trial spell. Syers was awarded Bradford City’s Player’s Player of the Year award by his teammates in May 2011 to cap off an impressive first season in full time football. He left Valley Parade the following summer with 59 Bradford City appearances to his name, signing for Doncaster Rovers the following season. He helped Rovers earn promotion to the Championship at the end of his first season with the South Yorkshire club. However after making just two Championship appearances with ‘Donny’, he signed on loan with Scunthorpe United in October 2013, going onto sign permanently for ‘The Iron’ on a two-and-a-half year deal that January. He scored his first career hat-trick in February 2014, in a 5-1 win over Portsmouth but was injured in the opening game of the 2014/15 season, which would unfortunately rule him out of the entire campaign. He was ultimately released by ‘Scunny’ in January 2016, after making 46 appearances for the club, and went onto sign for Rochdale later that month. After being released at the end of the season, he briefly re-linked with Guiseley before signing for Darlington for the majority of the 2016/17 season. He went onto make over 80 appearances for the North East club before returning to Farsley in November 2018. Despite playing most of his career in central midfield, the 33-year-old has sown his versatility in also fitting into the backline at Farsley over the past 12 months. An accomplished cricket player, Syers played for various Leeds teams in the early stage of his career before having to give up due to his full-time football career. A Leeds University graduate, Syers has since retrained and is now a chartered accountant. 18. Sam Walker – Midfielder Experienced midfielder Sam Walker was

our first signing of the summer, after joining from fellow National League North side Curzon Ashton, who he returned to last November after winning back-to-back promotions in his first spell at the club. The 34-year-old had previously worked with Celts manager Adam Lakeland at the Tameside-based club, who he first played for until 2015, when he signed for FC Halifax Town. For the 2016/17 campaign he sealed a move to Salford City and the following season signed for Stockport County, where he remained until summer 2020. He then moved to Macclesfield Town until the sudden demise of the National League club. A switch to Chorley followed in the autumn before his return to Curzon a few months later, where he would play a handful of games before the early curtailment of the season. 14. Tyler Walton – Midfielder Walton joined the Celts in a switch from Frickley Athletic in summer 2019. His former clubs include Leeds United and Manchester City at youth level and York City for whom he debuted at 17 years of age. The midfielder scored on his full Celts debut in the win against Darlington on the opening day of the 2019/20 season. The roaming midfielder has proven to be a solid member of the Farsley squad, and is now entering his third season with the club. 24. Louis Fialdini – Forward Fialdini, who is a member of Farsley’s Under-23s squad, made his senior professional debut with Farsley Celtic this season, with a substitute appearance against Kettering. He scored on his non-competitive debut for the first team, the final goal during pre-season’s opening 4-1 victory over Eccleshill United. The 18-year-old forward was previously at Huddersfield Town and Barnsley academies. 17. James Hanson – Forward Renowned forward James Hanson was our third signing of the summer and arrives at the Citadel with a wealth of experience at Football League level. Having initially started out at Eccleshill

United, it was on the non-league circuit that Hanson first made his name, with a prolific spell at nearby Guiseley, then playing in the Northern Premier League, netting 44 goals in 91 games. Interest from clubs in the professional game soon followed and he signed his first full-time contract at Bradford City in July 2009, a club where he would go onto become a cult hero over the next eight seasons. He made an immediate impact at Valley Parade, winning player of the season for the 2009/10 campaign. Hanson scored a goal in the first leg of The Bantams’ famous League Cup semi-final win over Aston Villa, and was then man of the match in the second leg as the League Two club incredibly set up a Wembley final clash against then Premier League side Swansea City. Bradford were defeated 5-0 in the final but it was still an incredible achievement following wins over the likes of Arsenal and Wigan seeing them become the first fourth-tier side to reach the final since 1962. Hanson was instrumental that season as Bradford achieved promotion to League 1 via the play-offs. He netted in a semi-final victory over Burton Albion as well as the final in City’s second Wembley appearance of the season, as they defeated Northampton Town 3-0. After an incredible spell at Bradford, where he made over 300 appearances and ranked himself inside their top 10 goal scorers of all time, Hanson completed a transfer to Sheffield United in January 2017. However he was unable to quite reach the same heights in the Championship and after a loan spell at Bury, joined AFC Wimbledon in summer 2018. After an injury hit-spell with the London club, 33-year old Hanson moved to Grimsby Town the following summer, where he has remained for the last two seasons. 11. Luke Parkin – Forward Forward Luke Parkin adds another dimension to the Celts attack, operating either out wide or through the middle. Parkin spent his youth career at Leeds United before turning professional at the age of 18. Parkin spent time on loan at Guiseley AFC,

before leaving Leeds and plying his trade with Gainsborough Trinity and Brighouse Town. Was loaned out to Tadcaster Albion in the 2019/20 season but backed up his desire to stay at the club with a string of good performances as he earned a new deal for last season. The good performances continued and the lively 26-year-old has once again been retained for the 2021/22 campaign. 9. Jimmy Spencer – Forward Leeds-born Jimmy Spencer is coming into his fourth season as a Farsley player, having initially joined the club in August 2018. With plenty of experience in the Football League, the 29-year-old forward has shown his football intelligence and prowess in front of goal time and time again, to become a firm fan’s favourite at the Citadel. Jimmy started his career with Huddersfield Town, and was with the Terriers for five years when he also enjoyed spells on loan with then National League Club Northwich Victoria, Morecambe, Cheltenham, Brentford, Crawley Town and Scunthorpe United. Following a brief spell with Notts County he signed a two-year deal with the club at the start of the 2014/15 season. He then had a year with Plymouth Argyle in 2016/17 and moved on to play for Mansfield Town in 2017/18. Jimmy signed for Celts prior to the start of the 2018/19 campaign. He was voted NPL player of the year in his first campaign with the club and then signed a long term contract in May 2019, before renewing with another two-year contract in summer 2021, which will keep him at the club through to 2023. 22. Reggie Waud – Forward Reggie Waud graduated from Farsley’s youth academy this season after featuring in the majority of pre-season friendlies. He scored five with Adam Lakeland spectating last year’s U23 post-season West Riding County Cup quarter-final 5-3 victory over Pontefract Collieries. The 20-year-old forward is dual-registered with Maltby Main this season.

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation is a charity set up in memory of Daniel Wilkinson who died in 2016 aged 24, while playing the game he loved, from an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC). Dan played football from an early age and joined Hull City AFC when he was 10, earning a professional contract aged 18. Loughborough University followed where he completed a degree in Accounting and Financial Management while playing non-league football. Other than feeling light-headed on a few occasions in the month before he died, he had no symptoms!

SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IN THE YOUNG (SCD) SCD is the leading cause of death in young athletes during sport and the majority of deaths occur with NO SYMPTOMS or family history. ARVC can be found in one in every 1,000 to 5,000 young adults - IF IT IS LOOKED FOR. Warning signs may include light-headedness, fainting, palpitations, swollen legs, breathlessness. Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die from previously undiagnosed heart conditions. In Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 89%.

OUR MISSION The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise awareness of SCD and to provide funding towards heart screening, defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training primarily for grass-roots sporting teams. Tragedies can be prevented through cardiac screening. It is vital that young people are identified and treated.
