CHAIRMAO

Notes from the little purple book of COLFC chairman Paul Manning Welcome today to everyone for the start of our Season 2019/20 and a special welcome to our visitors from Campion FC, travelling over from Bradford today. The FA Cup is great and really does have a magic effect on people. I simply cannot explain the excitement that people still get from the competition. Perhaps like so many things that affect us as Adults, it all goes back to our childhoods (Dr Manning is now available for Psychotherapy at very reasonable rates!). FA Cup final day is something that sticks in my memory from childhood, the whole family made a day of it, no matter who was in the final. My earliest football memory is aged 6 and Liverpool beating Newcastle 3-0 in the final in 1974. Then it is a constant stream of results and memories; 1975 West Ham 2 Fulham 0, 1976 Southampton 1 Man Utd 0, 1977 Man Utd 2 Liverpool 1 (ugghhh), 1978 Ipswich 1 Arsenal 0, 1979 Arsenal 3 Man Utd 2, 1980 West Ham 1 Arsenal 0, 1981 Tottenham 3 Man City 2, 1982 Tottenham 1 QPR 0, 1983 Man Utd 4 Brighton 0, 1984 Everton 1 Watford 0, 1985 Man Utd 1 Everton 0, 1986 Liverpool 3 Everton 1, 1987 Coventry 3 Tottenham 2, 1988 Wimbledon 1 Liverpool 0, 1989 Liverpool 3 Everton 2. I first went to Wembley for the Charity Shield in 1977 to see Liverpool beat Southampton, then was back in 1984 for the first all Merseyside League Cup Cup Final and then it felt like I was never away from the place watching Liverpool FC.

The FA Cup and Wembley seem to have been de-valued by overuse in the modern era, but down here in the Non-League pyramid, the magic is alive and well. Today is Campion’s first ever game in the FA Cup which must be very exciting for them. It’s only 2 season’s ago that we made our debut away at Padiham in a very eventful match. The Purps took the lead early on through Jamie McDonald, before Padiham were awarded a dubious penalty to equalize. Shortly after The Storks were reduced to 10 men after a head high challenge on Longrigg We put on a massive amount of pressure to try and get the winner, but it took the introduction of Tom Peterson as a second half substitute to get the all-important goal as he lashed home an 81st minute winner. This was also the game when the Padiham manager Steve Wilkes was on a stadium ban, so he simply placed a ladder outside and watched from over the wall – which subsequently made the regional news after the FA further banned and fined him. This win led to the famous tie with Prescot Cables and I would 8 – 2 bring that match up again, but suffice to say that we tore Cables a new one in the replay in front of a crowd of 900+ before going on to our record home crowd of 1024 against Nantwich in the next round and a 2-1 defeat. Good luck to both sides today and we hope for a good, competitive game and a Purps win!!

MANAGERS NOTES Hear from our championship winning manager Craig Robinson Good afternoon and welcome to our first competitive game of the 2019/20 season were we start off in the FA Cup were we welcome Campion FC who are playing in the FA Cup for the first time. That is why this competition is the best, this is only our third season in the competition and the FA Cup gives everyone involved who watched the Fa Cup since they were kids to believe and dream of going on a cup run and causing upsets.

I was really pleased with our last pre season game Tuesday night against Warrington Town who have beatteams all through pre season convincingly yet in the first half we were the better team as there manager has also said which is good to hear. They are a good squad so although it was disappointing conceding the goals we we did and losing 2-1 I come away pleased with the performance and we now have to take that into today’s game.

That is why there is no easy game and Campion will be coming to us to cause an upset so we have to be ready I couldn’t think of a better way to start and I know we are it’s a great way to the season, a home game in the FA kick our season off. Cup! Let’s get behind the lads like I know you will in what I’m sure will be It’s the end of pre season and if you a great game and the start of an excitask any player or manager know one ing season ahead! enjoys it. There has been a lot of hard on and off the pitch and I’m happy with the work we have done. It was great to win the Champions Cup against a good 1874 Northwich and another cup for the club making us joint most successful team in NWCL history and to do it over three seasons is an unbelievable achievement and credit must go to everyone involved.

CAMPION AFC Based at the Manningham Mills Sports Association on Scotchman Road in the shadow of the iconic Lister’s Manningham Mills Campion F.C. are perhaps the most successful amateur team over recent years to hail from Bradford. Since the turn of the decade the club has won various cups with the 2006/7 victory in the WRCFA Challenge Cup final undoubtedly being the highlight. Formed in 1963 by Michael Mahoney, taking its players from the members of St Edmund Campion Youth club, in 1976 through Peter Kennelly the club was renamed Campion F.C. The club moved into open age football in 1975 entering the Bradford Sunday League 4th division and gained promotion over five years to the 1st Division. In 1976 the club entered the Red Triangle League a local Bradford Saturday League and after steady years of progress moved up to the Premier Division in 1979. The following season saw Campion lift the Premier Division league cup as well as finish runners up in the league. 1981 saw the clubs policy change to concentrate on Saturday football only as they entered the West Riding County Amateur League and in 1983 both its open age teams were in the W.R.C.A.F.L.

Due to financial difficulties and the resignation of both the 1st and 2nd team managers along with the club secretary the club withdrew from the W.R.C.A.F.L. in 1985. Under new secretary Andy Shepherd the club re-formed and entered the premier division of the Red-Triangle League for the 1985/86 season. The club were accepted again back into W.R.C.A.F.L. in 1986. Steady progress was made during the next few season’s and by 1989 they were established in Division 2. At the start of the 1989/90 season former player Delroy Dacres was appointed manager in his first season in charge the Division 2 League and cup was won. This was followed by the Division 1 league and cup in 1992/93 bringing premier Division football to the club. The 1993/94 season saw the club’s reserve side win the Division 4 championship under the guidance of Dave Simpson and Andy Smith.

Since then the club has maintained steady progress and seen improvement both on and off the field of play. 2006 saw the club enter a new era with the opening of a £1.5 million club house and community centre under the banner of Manningham Mills Sports Association of which Campion F.C. is a partner along with Manningham Mills Cricket Club (now sadly defunct and Heaton Juniors F.C. In 2007 Heaton Juniors changed there name to Campion Juniors in partnership which hopefully see more home grown players progress through the ranks. Since the year 2000 the club have won numerous cups missing out on the League title by 1 point in 2005/06 despite winning 20 league matches on the trot. The following season saw the club bounce back to lift the biggest prize in the clubs history when after going a goal down to League rivals and former County cup winners Golcar United goals by former Bradford City and Newcastle United player Des Hamilton and a last minute winner by Micky Burke saw Campion Lift the County Cup. Season 2007-08 saw Campion retain the W.R.C.A.F.L. Premier Division League Cup for the third year on the trot making it a total of 4 wins in last five years Campion have lifted the Bradford & District FA Cup four times in 2001 2010 and 2012 and 2016, with the reserve side winning the trophy in 2017.

In 2011-12 the Reserves under the leadership of Howard Gordon won the W.R.C.A.F.L. Division Two championship following a run of 5 wins in the last 6 games saw them clinch the title by 3 points In 2013 Delroy Dacres announced that he was to retire as first team manager after 25 years in charge. Without doubt a larger than life character Delroy’s booming voice could be heard from a long distance and many a player and referee will no doubt be glad not to be on the receiving end of Del’s advice anymore at not only at Campion but other grounds throughout the league. James Bicknell took over as manager for the 2013-14 season which saw Campion lose their first game 5-0 to bitter rivals Tyersal, however progress was made during the season and the club finished third and also reached the League Cup final losing to League winners Overden WR. Following steady progress over the next season Campion again reached the District and League cup finals however both games were lost against Fields and Overden WR. In 2016 both the First team and Reserves made to the District FA Cup semi-final and were drawn against each other. Following a hard fought 90 minutes which saw the reserves leading at half time the game went to penalties. It was the First team that held their nerve to win a place in the final.

Once again Fields were the opponents for the second year running with Campion keen to avenge a County Cup defeat earlier in the season. Again after 90 minutes the scores were level however Campion won the penalty shoot out to see Bicknell lift his first trophy as Campion Manager. The club also formed an Under 21 team after a merger with Wibsey Lions under 18s which took part in the WRCFA floodlight league for the first time in the 2015/16 season. In December 2015 the Club committee made the decision to apply for Membership of the Toolstation NCEL. Following a lot of hard work the ground passed an inspection in March 2016 and was proposed for promotion by The FA in May 2016, and was duly elected in June at The Toolstation NCEL AGM. In August 2016 floodlights were erected at Manningham Mills as the club embarked on their debut season in The Toolstation NCEL. Under James Bicknell and his Assistant Hayden Lobley the club took many by surprize and were in contention for a play-off place all season however it proved to be a step too far and Campion ended the season in a highly creditable 8th place. The season also saw the U21’s enter the Premier Division of the WRCFA Floodlight league and under the guidance of new Manager Louis Etienne aided by Chris Kay ended in third place, in a league which included teams from further up the nonleague ladder such as Halifax Town Harrogate Town Tadcaster Albion amongst others.

What was perhaps more heart-breaking was the fact that only one point was required in the final game of season away to Grimsby Borough which ended in a 4-2 defeat which meant Grimsby won the league. A result of finishing second in the league means Campion will now enter The FA Cup for the first time in the clubs history. However the reserve team were able to bring some silverware home under the management of Louis Etienne & Damo Latif they gain promotion as League champions of Division Two in their debut season in the West Yorkshire Association Football League During the close season the club was delighted to announce that former Colne manager and vastly experienced Lee Ashforth was appointed as joint manager along with Bicknell. It’s hoped that along with first team coach Marcus Mitchell this appointment will take the club that one step further and gain promotion that was so cruelly denied last season. Season 2017-18 saw the club enter The FA Vase for the very first time in which they lost to a last minute goal to Bedlington Terriers. The 2018-19 season saw the club finish in the highest league position ever when they were runners up to Division one league champions Grimsby Borough. However due to the strange decision made by the FA of one promotion spot available and Campion were denied promotion.

The First 250! Throughout this season, we will begin to look back at the club’s first 250 games and reminisce on the all the key moments in the early history of football club. The Race Night – Before a ball was kicked this took place in the bar at Bootle FC. This event took place in April 2016 in an attempt to generate what were much needed funds before the start of Pre-Season.

#1 Stockport Town (AWAY) Stockport had been very supportive of our attempts to join the NWCFL on social media, one of the few, if not the only club who were, and consequently we asked them to host a behind closed doors friendly, where Simon Burton could have a look at a few players who had been to training or had been recommended to him. Present were only Paul Manning and club secretary Peter Manning plus Andrew & Alison Pendleton who were there to watch their lad Lewis play for us. Daley Woods opened the scoring for us quite early, but amidst about 15 substitutions we made, Stockport scored twice to run out winners 2-1, but the result was immaterial.

Manager Simon Burton and Assistant Manager Tom Spearritt attended and the event was organized by Paul Manning & Stuart Fitzgerald. Taking the bets for the club were Amanda Manning and Leanne Brady and there on the night were Joe Bennett, Greg Heynes, Emma Haynes, Peter McCabe, Mark Malone & John and Julie McDermott amongst a crowd of about 40 people. We held a raffle and Joe Bennett won a 1st team home shirt. Paul Manning, Amanda Manning, Leanne Brady, Joe Bennett and John McDermott were all present at the Reusch Champions Cup match v 1874 Northwich on Saturday 27th July 2019 – Our last game in the NWCFL.

Ste Longrigg signed for the club that night and we played in a borrowed kit from Runcorn Town which was light blue, which was quite significant for us, as when last season we were banned from wearing our Grey kit by the NWCFL. We thought back to that rainy night in Stockport and remembered the Sky Blue kit and we bought Sky Blue shirts as a 3rd shirt, which of course we went on to win the league in!!

#2 Prestatyn Town (away)

The starting line up for the club on this historic day was; Connolly, Lester, Blayney, Gregson, Dykes, Webb, Chojnicki, Daniels, Woods, Triallist, Joseph SUBS: Ablewhite, Martland, Triallist, Triallist, Triallist

The first official match for the club after Prestatyn made contact and invited us to play our first ever game at Bastion Gardens.

The identity of the 4 triallists may well be a mystery never to be solved! Hastily arranged mascot on the day was Tom Joynt, who was the only kid present who owned a Purps shirt!!

The match itself is a bit of a blur, but Declan Gregson scored our first official goal after he blocked a clearance and the ball rebounded in to put us 1-0 up. Prestatyn then equalized and it was 1-1 at half time. Prestatyn took the lead 2-1 after a scramble from a corner, before Billy Webb equalized for the Purps and Rob Ablewhite got us an unlikely winner from the sub’s bench. The match was effectively abandoned after a 28 man episode of There were about 140 Purps present handbags erupted on the pitch on 90 on the day, which we were made up minutes, which prompted a legendabout and we couldn’t believe ary Purps moment. we won the game either. Tony Caveney hurdled the perimeter fence to go on and join the action before an anguished cry of “Tony, NO!!!!!!” from myself thankfully stopped him in his tracks.

Prestatyn were great hosts and never made a fuss about the shenigans at the end.
