NOTES FROM CHAIRMAO

PAUL MANNING It would be very easy to write a load of hot air (I am good at it!) about the pandemic and 6 months and missing football, but all I want to say on the subject is that around 60,000 people in the UK have died. All those families devastated and hundreds of thousands of other people have been sick. All of our frontline workers in the NHS and other services have put their own lives at risk, so as a club we pay our respects to them all and be grateful that we are still here and able to get on with our lives. Compared to the cost that they have sustained, having to wear a mask occasionally or make some other small sacrifice seems quite easy indeed. Today we welcome the Directors, Staff, Players and Supporters of Morpeth Town FC to the much re-vamped & improved Berry Street Garage Stadium for the Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying round game. Seeing as though last season was Null & Voided we don’t have to recall two tight games against Marske, were they emerged victorious on both occasions 1-0.

to life in the NPL we had last Season and have again this season! Marske (3rd), Workington (1st) and Ramsbottom (2nd) in our opening 4 games was and is as tough an ask as is possible. Last season it constituted 2 away games and a home game, from which we took zero points. This season it constitutes 2 home games and an away game and could well give us a big indication as to any progression the squad has made. Hopefully, we can deliver a better points return this time. Last week at Glossop North End in the FA Cup was a genuinely brilliant performance from the Purps in my opinion. The lads stood up strong against a physically imposing team, before class told and what looks like a comfortable 3-0 was achieved. Believe me our lads had to battle for 90 minutes to get the win and keep a clean sheet – but that’s exactly what they did and all credit to them and Robbo and his staff for earning the victory. If that level of performance and attitude is replicated every week, then we can look forward to a very positive season ahead, starting today hopefully.

I’d like to personally thank all of the supporters who have bought tickets and travelled down from Morpeth today and in doing so will spend their hard earned There is no doubt that our Division must money with City of Liverpool FC today. We be one of the toughest, if not the toughest appreciate that times are hard for everyat Step 4 in the country. Top sides from all one currently, so to make a 300? Mile across the North competing for 3 proround trip in the current circumstances motion places and now having seen the is to be praised – but of course we hope final league standings from last season, they go home empty handed and disapwe can see what an incredibly tough start pointed!!

MATCH REPORT

COLFC 2 VS 4LUKE MARSKE DENSON UTD The Purps lost on the opening day of the PitchingIn NPLNW season, after an inspired display from Marske United’s Matty Tymon saw the visitors take away the three points. Marske took the lead on 7 minutes after the lively Curtis Round broke free down the left and picked out Adam Boyes with a devilish ball in, the forward made no mistake, tapping home from inside the 6 yard box. Tymon wasted no time in adding to his tally and the forward made it 0-3 to the visitors on 27 minutes. The dangerous Curtis Round again broke free down the left, cutting an inch perfect ball back for Tymon to place an emphatic side footed finish into the back of the net. The Purps finally got a route back into the game on 41 minutes as Dom Reid was upended in the box and referee Mark McQuillan immediately pointed to the spot. Nathan Burke stepped up to take the spot kick and made no mistake, sending Catterick the wrong way to make it 1-3. On the stroke of half time it should have been 2-3 as a brilliant turn and cross from Elliott Nevitt picked out the late-arriving Gerard Kinsella but the midfielder sliced his effort under pressure and Marske cleared. HALF TIME: City of Liverpool 1-3 Marske United

City of Liverpool manager Craig Robinson made two changes at the interval with Jason Jeffries being replaced by Tom Stephens and Tony Gray coming on for Gerard Kinsella, as the Purps looked to find a way back into the game. The hosts did get their second goal however on 84 minutes as substitute Jack Hazlehurst curled a magnificent 30 yard free kick into the postage stamp to set up an entertaining finish. Marske United didn’t read the script though, as within a minute of the Purple Messi’s goal the visitors had a fourth. Matty Tymon found space in the box after good work from Jack Blackford and the forward grabbed his hat trick, firing low into the bottom left hand corner across Wheeler who had no chance. FULL TIME: City of Liverpool 2-4 Marske United. CITY OF LIVERPOOL TEAM: Wheeler, Jeffries (Stephens 46), Rigby, Burke, Brown, McCarten, Kinsella (Gray 45), Barrow, Nevitt, McDonald, Reid (Hazlehurst). Purps MOTM: Owen Wheeler – The Purps goalkeeper made a string of great stops in the first half as the visitors threatened the home goal.

OUR OPPONENTS TODAY

MORPETH TOWN AFC Morpeth Town Football Club was established in 1894, and through more than a century of football have continued the tradition of carrying Amber and Black as their team colours. The club was formed after an amalgamation between Morpeth United and Morpeth FC, playing at Stobhill Cricket Field. In 1954 the club moved to Storey Park, and in the 1980s enjoyed a successful time in the Northern Alliance, winning the title and finishing runners-up on two other occasions, as well as lifting both the Challenge Cup and Benevolent Bowl in 1986. The club spent half a century in the Northern Football Alliance before stepping up to the Northern League on their One Hundredth Anniversary, winning the Division Two title in their first season and finishing sixth in Division One and Northumberland Senior Cup runners-up in their second. In 1998/99 they made it to the final Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, losing 1-0 at home to Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion. The club moved to a purpose-built stadium in 1994, which coincided with

a League and Cup double, and with it, promotion to the Northern League. Craik Park was named after the father and son W and R Craik who had served as secretary between 1920 and 1985. Current President Ken Beattie was the man behind the stadium and since 1992 he has revived the club’s fortunes. Membership of the Northern League followed in 1994/95 and the following year saw the Second Division Championship being presented to Morpeth. The club finished sixth in the First Division at the first time of asking, as well as reaching the final of the Northumberland Senior Cup. After sitting comfortably mid-table between 1996/7 and 1999/2000, Morpeth narrowly avoided relegation on goal difference in the 2000/01 season

and finished once again one spot above the relegation zone in 2001/02.

finishing fourth and at one point won fourteen consecutive home games.

The next few years saw Morpeth Town move back into the middle of the table before a sixth place finish in 2005/06, Morpeth’s equal top performance in the Northern League.

2012/13 saw the side improve once more, finishing one place higher in third position, beating out Jarrow Roofing on goal difference to earn promotion.

In 2006/07 Morpeth won the Northumberland Senior Cup for the first time since 1886 (as Morpeth Harriers) with a 3-2 victory over Blyth Spartans. Disaster struck in 2009/10 as Morpeth Town were relegated to the Second Division and things got even worse a season later as Morpeth Town finished bottom of the Northern League’s second tier. The club was in dire straits with President Ken Beattie and Chairman Jim Smith trying their best to keep the club running by bringing the ground up to Northern League standards whilst being forced to ground share with local rivals Bedlington Terriers. The club was within weeks of folding at one point.

After earning promotion Morpeth Town managed to avoid the drop quite comfortably finishing in seventeenth place. During the season, they also went on a then historic FA Vase run to the Quarter-Final stage. In 2014/15 saw further improvement, with the Highwaymen finishing eighth in the table and reaching the Northumberland Senior Cup Final. The club was now beginning to attract high-calibre players to the area, with the likes of Keith Graydon and Ben Sayer signing from higher level football. The 2015/16 season brought Nick Gray his first trophy for the club, and what a win it was, beating heavily favoured Hereford FC 4-1 in the FA Vase final at Wembley Stadium.

The Highwaymen began their revival in 2011/12 under the stewardship of Nick Gray who moved to the club from Seaton Delaval and brought a number of players.

Despite going a goal down in the first two minutes, the Highwaymen battled back, 45-year old Chris Swailes netting to equalise before half-time.

In his first season Morpeth narrowly missed promotion back to the top tier,

The second half brought an onslaught from Morpeth, Luke Carr scoring after

just a minute before Sean Taylor and Shaun Bell netted on a famous day for the Northumberland club. In addition to the Vase, Town finished fourth in the Northern League. The following season, the club narrowly missed out on winning their inaugural Northern League title, finishing in second place behind South Shields. More recent times have been hugely successful with promotion secured to the Northern Premier League East Division at the start of the 2018/19 season and a step into the unknown. Far from being daunted by this prospect, the Highwaymen won the title by a distance and added the Senior Cup to claim an unprecedented double. The 2019/20 season was one not experienced by any club in history as a global pandemic brought the campaign to an abrupt conclusion, with Town on a 10-game unbeaten run and heading for the Play-off spots. The summer brought change in the manager’s dugout as long-serving Nick Gray stepped down to be replaced by Stephen Turnbull, who takes on his first job in management, having worked on the coaching staff at Craik Park as well as being a player.

KICK IT OUT OF FOOTBALL.

ROBBO TALKS

CRAIG ROBINSON there will be more over the cause of the season I’m sure but to be successful we have to improve I feel we have and it’s shown in some of our results in pre season.

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game were we welcome Marske in our first league game of the season. It’s been a long and frustrating wait for this day to come with the world we are living in at the moment. I’m not going to lie it has been difficult period from when our season was ended last March due to the pandemic. It’s been a difficult time for us all but one thing that has come out of all this is that it has shown us all what is important in life our family, friends and our health and I hope you and your families have all have kept safe and well throughout this period. One thing I’d like to touch on is the tremendous work that kept doing behind the scenes at the football club looking out for the community supporting people in need with the food banks. In tough times people come together in support and this club certainly did that in abundance and everyone involved deserves tremendous credit and everyone connected with the club should be proud of all the work that the club do and will continue to do in the future. We’ve made a few changes during the break which I felt was needed to improve the squad players have moved on and I wish them all the best but that is football

The lads have worked hard in difficult circumstances with it being the longest pre season I’ve known and I couldn’t praise them enough the work they have put in and I feel we are in a good place and that showed last week in our 3-0 win away to Glossop in the Fa cup. Glossop were big physical side that competed well and were very direct, it was a difficult game to go into with it being our first competitive game in 6 months. The lads put a professional performance in and I always felt we had another gear if we needed to but they managed the game well which I felt we didn’t have last season. We have a strong squad and there is a lot of competition for places which gives me a headache but il take that because it keeps everyone on there toes knowing someone is ready to take there shirt if they don’t perform. We’ve got a good mix and characters in the dressing room now but most importantly they are winners, hungry players that have been successful were ever they have been and know what it takes to win games! I’m excited to for the new season and there is no better game to go up against Marske who we’re one of the better teams we come up against last season and a team that will be up near the top come end of the season. I’m hoping on a good crowd to get behind the lads and show what great support we have to the new players we have brought in! Enjoy the game and thank you for all your support! Robbo

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation is a charity set up in memory of Daniel Wilkinson who died in 2016 aged 24, while playing the game he loved, from an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC). Dan played football from an early age and joined Hull City AFC when he was 10, earning a professional contract aged 18. Loughborough University followed where he completed a degree in Accounting and Financial Management while playing non-league football. He was an athlete who enjoyed the gym and took his health and nutrition very seriously. He lived life to the full and had so much ahead of him. Other than feeling light-headed on a few occasions in the month before he died, he had no symptoms!

SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IN THE YOUNG (SCD) SCD is the leading cause of death in young athletes during sport and the majority of deaths occur with NO SYMPTOMS or family history. ARVC can be found in one in every 1,000 to 5,000 young adults - IF IT IS LOOKED FOR. Warning signs may include light-headedness, fainting, palpitations, swollen legs, breathlessness. Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die from previously undiagnosed heart conditions. In Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 89%.

OUR MISSION The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise awareness of SCD and to provide funding towards heart screening, defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training primarily for grass-roots sporting teams. Tragedies can be prevented through cardiac screening. It is vital that young people are identified and treated.

WILL YOU

COLLABORATE COLlaborate is how you join with City of Liverpool Football Club to bring football back to its roots in Liverpool, linking you to a network of businesses, social enterprises, community organisations and other agencies who are committed to working locally and proving that good business is good for our communities. City of Liverpool Football Club doesn’t want to sell you an advert or a sponsorship package. We want you to join with us in making our community owned football club a vehicle for social value and wider community benefit - delivering your social value through the city’s passion for football. Social Value is the wider financial and non-financial impact of your work, including the well-being of individuals and communities, social capital and the environment.
