CHAIRMAO Notes from the little Purple book of COLFC Chairman, Paul Manning.

It’s been well documented on this page that we have got a good relationship with Squires Gate off the field, they are a good bunch of fellas who were supportive of us when we first went to play them and gave us a warm welcome at Brian Addison Park.

which is not due to the want of trying I can assure you. Myself and Peter Furmedge have wandered aimlessly down by the Pier Head on more than one occasion this year asking ourselves “what did all that mean?” after another seemingly futile meeting, but we are getting there slowly but surely. We have to accept that funding to local Councils has been slashed by central Government, the Deputy Mayor stepped down from her role (a big blow to us!), then the #1 & #2 men in the Council Regeneration department who were dealing with us on #projectL10 got “2peed” out to form the Council’s new Social Housing scheme, which was another big blow to us. Matters came to a head in our December meeting when we finally let our composed and professional demeanors slip a little and this seems to have had the desired effect, but this first quarter of 2019 will be crucial to keeping us on track as well as possible and hopefully seeing us obtain the lease and proceed with the Community Share Offer. Meantime, we once again ask supporters to control themselves at matches!! The fines are racking up now and with them the misdemeanor points that can lead to a points deduction. The ball is in your court! I’d like to welcome everyone associated with Squires Gate to the TDP Stadium today and hope for a great game but most definitely a Purple win and 3 more points!! #UTP

They were not too kind on the pitch in that season as they were, and still remain the only club to have done a league double over us so far – a statistic that we are not too fond of!! We have made some amends this season so far as we have knocked Squires Gate out of both the FA Cup and the Macron Cup already, but this game (and the return fixture next week) are the first league fixtures between the clubs this season, so once again Squires Gate have the chance to do the league double over us, as do Hanley Town (who we are yet to face this season) and Bootle, who of course beat us 2-0 on Boxing Day. The only other game we have lost was at Congleton, but we got our revenge recently with the 2-1 home win in appalling conditions. We don’t win any trophies for this kind of thing, but they are an inherent part of keeping the furnace stoked! We have recently had some great publicity from the Liverpool Echo highlighting our #ProjectL10 and while it was nice for the club to be asked by the Echo to provide an update, as most Purps will already know, there has not been much progress in the last 6 months,

managers notes This is the first of two league games against them with us playing them away a week today. I’d like to start by wishing all the Purps a Happy New Year let’s hope it will be a successful one on the pitch and also a year to remember!

anywhere near the levels we have been or can be an il take responsibility for that it’s not good enough and I won’t except it. The result was hard to take but credit to Bootle they deserved there win and you could certainly see how much it meant to them. There’s been a lot of comments after the game which I’ve made sure I’ve read as it’s just one game and we’ll use it to learn and drive us on as we are focused on what we need to do as there is 16 league games left after our win against Winsford away which was a good win to bounce back with, it may not have been pretty at times but the players but there bodies on the line towards to the end to pick up another 3 points to put us 6 points clear going into the new year a position we would of took at the start of the season. We are in a good place so it’s important we stay positive an keep supporting the players we’ve built a great squad and getting stronger with John Mac training and looking sharp he will be like a new signing as he’s looking hungry to get back on the pitch and pick up were he left and I can’t wait to see him back playing again! Enjoy the game and thank you for your support!

We welcome Squires Gate were it will be our third game of the four games we will play them this season with us already playing them already in the Fa Cup and in the Macron Cup. This is the first of two league games against them with us playing them away a week today. They are a team in good form and always compete with players that can hurt you so as always we have to be at our best. We’re on the back of a tough December/ Christmas period were we have took 10 points from 15, would I have of took that after our defeat against Congleton away? Probably yes we had some tough games in that period and it can always be difficult over Christmas period! Our last home game against Bootle on Boxing Day was a disappointing result to take we didn’t deserve anything from the game, they wanted it more than us which is hard for me to say, we weren’t

squires gate Blackpool & District Amateur League: 1958 to 1961 Squires Gate were formed in 1948 as Squires Gate British Legion FC and competed in the Blackpool & District Amateur League. They won the leagues Rawling Shield in their first season. The name of the club was changed to Squires Gate FC in 1953. They won the leagues First Division in 1955–56 and 1956–57; also the Blackwell Cup in 1958–59 and 1959–60. They spent the 1960–61 in the Fylde District League, winning the Fylde Cup and losing finalists in the Bannister Cup. West Lancashire League: 1961 to 1991 The following season they moved up to the West Lancashire League where they spent the next thirty years. From 1961 until 1980 they were in Division Two and were promoted in 1981 as champions. In the 1986–87 season they won the Richardson Cup. North West Counties Leage: 1991 onward They were elected into the North West Counties Football League for the 1991–92 season, joining Division Two for the 1991–92 season. Squires Gate won the leagues Fair Play Award for the 1993–94 season and were losing finalists in the 1997–98 Division Two Trophy. They won the 2001–02 season Division Two Trophy and then the following season they missed the runner-up spot on goal difference but were still promoted to Division One following

the demise of Stand Athletic who had originally been promoted as Division Two champions. They reached their highest league placing in the 2005–06 season also reaching the quarter finals of the FA Vase then last season, under the Management of Andy Clarkson, Gate improved still further on their best ever placing, finishing sixth in what is now the Premier Division. On 10 March 2007 Squires Gate played a home match against FC United of Manchester at Curzon Ashton F.C.s ground. The club had approached Blackpool F.C. about playing the game at Bloomfield Road but the ground was not available. And so they played the match in Ashton-under-Lyne, as it was felt that FCUM fans were more likely to attend with the match being staged in the Greater Manchester area. A crowd of 1,650 saw Squires Gate lose 0-1 and Squires Gate earned about £7,000. To cap a very impressive 2007-08 season, Squires Gate were delighted that no less than nine of their members were honoured with long service awards: Albert Hamer, George Diggle, Roy Westhead, Brian Hugill and Brian Addison all collected Football Association Order of Merit mementos for 50 years service; and Steve Bellamy, Mick Farrer, John Maguire and Tony 9

Hornby received 30 years awards from the Lancashire FA. All these stalwarts are still active in the service of their Club. Groundsman Brian Addison was judged the best at our level in the Northern Region, and a magnificent third nationally at the FA Groundsman of the Year presentations in London last September, and his pitch is clear evidence of his commitment. As Chairman Stuart Hopwood said, “ We believe in a sure and steady programme of improvement of our facilities, and we now feel that with an award winning pitch, dressing rooms which are amongst the best in the League, and a pleasant, air-conditioned Clubhouse, we have a lot to be proud of, and the future looks good for Squires Gate FC. Dave McCann was appointed manager towards the end of the 2012/13 season and has endured premier survival since taking charge. He is assisted by Richard Thomas. Season 20014/15 was the most successful in the NWCFL finishing in 6th place with a record number of points. Due to an indifferent start in the 2015/16 season, club captain Danny Penswick took over as player manager and ensured survival with a memorable last game victory at Ashton Athletic. Danny also ensured premier division status in 2016/17 thanks to a late surge including a victory at home to Runcorn Linnets; this was despite losing the potent strike force of Ric Seear to Colne and Ryan Riley to Bamber Bridge. 10

captains notes We enter 2019 top of the league and it’s exactly where we want to stay. We come of the back of a disappointing defeat against Bootle to bounce back against Winsford with 3 points and a clean sheet on the road.

had a couple of chances and they didn’t really threaten us too much. But second half they were the better team and deserved the win at the end, they gave them a little bit of belief that they can catch us, but it also gave us some more fire in our belly’s to make sure that they don’t catch us. Today we have got Squires gate at home who are in form and are a very decent team so we will have to be at our best to get the three points. I think Morgan Bacon in goal has been brilliant for us since we have signed him, he’s a top keeper and a good lad and he has fitted straight in and some of the saves he has made already have been outstanding and definitely saved us a few points already. I hope everyone had a good Christmas and a happy new year let’s hope we can get a couple of trophies in 2019 and we all have a boss year!

Winsford wasn’t the prettiest of games but we ground it out and got the 3 points and kept the clean sheet just about. But it’s all we have to do for the next couple of months, we just have to keep winning, it’s not about how well we play its just about making sure we come away from each game with 3 points. The chasing pack will keep on hunting us down but we have the character and ability to stay at the top, we have to give 110% every game and continue with the good things which have put us into this position. The Bootle game was a frustrating one, I though first half we were okay,

With the ongoing success of our football for everyone project and our brand-new walking football initiative we are starting to put the wheels in motion for our next scheme, Kits4Kids, a scheme which aims to provide children in the local area with the equipment and kit needed to participate in football. Families are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head never mind forking out £40/£50 for a pair of boots every year plus shin pads, kit etc, if you have more than one child you’re suddenly looking at spending a few hundred pounds, and that’s before any subs need paying. An analysis by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reveals cuts to benefits and tax credits under the Tory government will see children hardest hit, forecasting that around one and a half million more under-18s will live in households below the relative poverty line by 2022. The research, which analyses the

impact of welfare reforms between 2010 and 2018, shows households with lone parents and children are set to lose an average of £5,250 – almost one-fifth of their total net income, compared to a loss of £3,000 for couples with children. This will see the child poverty rate for those in lone parent households increase from 37 per cent to over 62 per cent. These children are of great risk of being isolated and abandoned socially. The life skills learned through football help empower individuals and enhance mental wellbeing, such as increased resiliency, self-esteem and connections with others. These features of football are beneficial to people of all ages, but they are especially vital to the healthy development of young people. We must do more to increase engagement and encourage young people into football, not stand by while they are priced out of the game through no fault of their own. This is where the fantastic City of Liverpool FC Supporters come in! If there are any old kits, boots or shin pads that your son/ daughter has grown out of then please do not hesitate to contact us and we can arrange a collection or drop them off at one of the home games where one of our Community team will collect them from you.
