CHAIRMAO Notes from the little Purple book of COLFC Chairman, Paul Manning. We welcome our friends from Silsden for today’s league encounter.

games were perhaps last season we might have drawn or even lost, we now have the fortitude to go on and win. Silsden have dropped off the pace at the top of the league after a blistering start to the campaign and if memory serves they held an 11 point lead at the top at one point, albeit we had games in hand, which shows the quality they possess and the draw up in Yorkshire earlier in the season shows that we have to be on our game today to get the three points. Put simply, we all have to remain patient and take it one game at a time. Everybody who is involved in running the club is giving up their free time to ensure that Robbo and the lads have the best opportunity of going out and getting the three points and hopefully putting some more silverware in our trophy cabinet, to go with the four cups we have already won in our short existence. Later on tonight, our excellent COLFC in the Community are putting on another free evening’s entertainment at the Smithdown Social Club, this one focusing upon Mental Health, which is certainly an issue at our club. Our Club Welfare Officer Mike Caulfield has done good work this season keeping an eye on various people associated with the club who are struggling and signposting them towards the appropriate help. Mike will be hosting a panel of experts discussing issues, before a DJ and live music. It is a free event and one which we hope a lot of you support. Here’s hoping for a good game today and three points in the bag for the Purps

This is the final game of January and having bounced back very well from the Boxing Day defeat at home to Bootle, we look to conclude this first month of 2019 with a sixth straight victory that will push us three points nearer to our seasonal goal; to win promotion to the Evostick League. This has been a tremendous season so far and Robbo and the lads have put us in a very good position to go on and finish the season a massive high. We need another 26 points currently from 12 games which is 8.6 wins or for those of a nonmathematical bent, eight wins and two draws or just a straight nine wins. It sounds so easy but every game in this league is a battle and the three points always have to be earned. Nobody just rolls over and lets you take the points; well certainly not when they play us anyway! Last week’s match at Hanley is a case in point. They battled all the way and when Carl Klair got sent off not long after they had equalized to bring the game to 2-2, it looked like things could go badly wrong for us, but of course our buys dug in, Hanley then were reduced to 10 men and the rest is history. Hanley are struggling badly in the league and under threat of relegation, as were Winsford United and Abbey Hey, which were both very tough away games also, so we know that there simply are no easy games and certainly no games that we can afford to have a poor attitude in, but Robbo has changed the mentality of the squad and

managers notes it’s great to see the character and calmness when we go a goal behind and lift our tempo to get back in the game... Welcome to this afternoons game were we welcome Silsden! It’s our last game of January were I feel we’ve had a difficult run of games against teams in form so to come away with maximum points so far is again credit to the players.

away to Hanley was always going to be difficult with a new manager coming in and also bringing in a lot of new players, and there also in a relegation battle so they are battling to stay up. They were a tough physical team, and we had to work hard and battle to win the game and in end controlled the game. We lost Karl Clair to a harsh red card as I thought there’s was also but we managed it well an come away with 3 points and another game ticked off. There is 12 league games to go and every game is just as important as the last, as I keep saying we need to stay focused on what we are doing know one else! I’d like to congratulate Franny Foy on making 100 appearances for the club and there will be a presentation to congratulate him today it’s a great achievement who joins the the list with Danny, Kev and Tom P, Fran is a credit to the club and deserves all the accolades he gets! Enjoy the game and keep getting behind the lads,

Our last home game against Northwich Victoria the lads showed great character again with going a goal behind to come back and win 2-1 it’s great to see the character and calmness when we go a goal behind and lift our tempo to get back in the game but we need to stop making it harder for ourselves which we have in certain games. In our next game we beat Squires Gate away which was a good 3-0 win, the energy we showed was excellent and felt we could of won by a bigger margin with the chances we created but the most pleasing thing for me was the clean sheet I’ve been quite critical to the lads as we’ve conceded too many sloppy goals for my liking. Last week

silsden SILSDEN AFC…THE COBBYDALERS 2018–19

It was clear that the team was ready for football at a higher level and in season 2004/2005 Silsden joined the North West Counties League. Without floodlights and an enclosed pitch, the Cobbydalers were forced to play their home games at Cougar Park, the home of Rugby League Club, Keighley Cougars. The Cobbydalers gained promotion to the top division of the NWCFL in their inaugural season, finishing as runners up to runaway winners Cammell Laird. They also had their most successful runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase Competitions.

Silsden AFC was formed in September 1904 and has seen many teams come and go playing Saturdays and Sundays. The nickname, THE COBBYDALERS comes from the old name for the “town” which was famous for nail making and textiles. The present Saturday senior team has been playing since the 1996/97 season, starting life in the Craven & District Football League Division Two after the said team had progressed through the junior section within the club. They spent 3 years in the Craven League moving up to the Premier Division and in the last year in that division, set a new record of going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. From there they joined the West Riding County Amateur League in Division Two and quickly gained promotion up into the Premier Division where they enjoyed three seasons.

The club’s aim was to move back to the Keighley Road ground at the earliest opportunity and the club (Football and Cricket) embarked on a period of fund raising accruing over £100,000. Finally the development took place, with the help of a £663,453 grant from the Football Foundation, as part of its continuing investment in grass-roots football and an additional Football Foundation grant of £300,000 through the Community Club Development Programme.

In season 2002/2003 Silsden set another record in going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. To add to this they also won the West Riding County Challenge Cup for the third successive season, a feat only achieved by one other club.

In May 2009 the building of a new clubhouse & changing facilities was completed and August 2010 9

saw the completion of the ground improvements which meant a return of Silsden AFC to its rightful place.... back in Silsden! Since then the club has continued to develop its facilities particularly with the help of the new sponsors, COBBYDALE CONTRUCTION LTD. The old 1934 stand has been repaired and fencing around the ground completed. Outside toilets have been built and the 1904 suite. The playing surface and drainage have been improved year after year and the facilities are among the best in the league. Two Ministers of Sport have visited the club in recent years.

Competition each year running over the first weekend of July and the club also have a women’s team. Local Craven League team Silsden Whitestar also play at the Keighley Road ground along with Silsden Smashers rounders’ team and Silsden Running Club also use the ground as a base. Silsden AFC often hosts Keighley & District FA cup finals and Craven Wharfe Aire Junior League cup finals. The club prides itself on being a Friendly Club with close links with the Community. Various Charity events are held every summer on the field along with the facilities being used by the local Primary School, Silsden Majorettes and the Scouts. In 2014 the club produce a booklet about the club’s players who played in and won a prestigious cup on the Western Front before three of the players were killed in action in World War One.

The Cobbydalers maintained their position in the top division of the NWCFL until they were relegated at the end of season 2015-16, their best year being in season 2008-09 when they finished ninth with 58 points. Season 2016-17 saw them finish mid-table in an expanded Division One but under the stewardship of, former Bradford City forward, Danny Forrest. The Cobbydalers then gained promotion back to the Premier League in the 2017-18 season as First Division champions with a magnificent 103 points! Silsden AFC also have a progressive junior set up with boys and girls age groups running from Under 5’s right through to Under 18s. Some age groups run two teams making this one of the largest football clubs in the area. There is a prestigious Junior 10

captains notes We are on a great run at the moment and we know that all we have to do is keep winning. We are just taking it game by game and treating every game as a cup final. As long as we win no one can catch us and as a group of players that is all we are focusing on.

beat them all four times, which shows how good of a season we are having as Squires gate are very good team. We played really well in the first half and we were comfortable from then. It was great to see John McGrath back after injury and he is going to be a big player for us for the end of the season. Next up was Hanley away who are fighting for their lives down at the bottom and they had picked up a couple of good results so it was always going to be a tough game. The pitch was shocking but we managed to get the three points, it was scrappy but we were always in control and it’s always good when your strikers are scoring goals and Cairnsy and Tom P are flying at the moment. Franny Foy made his 100th appearance for the purps and he deserves all the plaudits in the world. He is a brilliant player with a wand of a left peg and he is a top top lad. He has a great attitude and is so consistent when he plays. Congrats Fran!

We have had a tough run of games and to come out of them with maximum points is massive and shows how well we are doing, but we have won nothing yet and that is what is driving us on. Northwich at home was a tough game they are good team and were full of confidence after a great result in the vase. It was a huge three points in what was the start of a tough period of games. We then travelled to Squires gate who we have now played four times this year and

Franny Foy 100 appearances for the Purps!

The player with the most names joined the club in March 2016 from I think Cammell Laiird who were then in the Premier Division. Simon Burton brought him in, and he made an immediate impact for the team, slotting into the left back position and making it his own, with a string of consistent performances and consistency has been the watchword of his time with the Purps. And it’s that consistency that has seen him rapidly catch up the other 3 lads up to the 100 appearance mark as Fran only made his debut in a 5-0 win against Chadderton towards the end of the 1st season, before featuring in the allconquering treble winning team that of

course won the Reusch Cup, the Macron Cup and the Play Off final. Fran was also a mainstay in the team in the second season, where he almost played the entire season before sickness cruelly robbed him of a full house in the penultimate game, but 54 games played in a season is something to be proud of and remains a club record. A man of few words who lets his football do the talking and perhaps that is why he has become a fans favourite. He has scored twice for the club, the best being the fantastic run and angled shot away at Ashton Athletic in the freezing cold, but the other was also a cracker against Charnock Richard this season after a great passing play, plus he has assisted in countless other goals, plus he also scored a penalty in the Macron Cup semi final away win shoot-out at Chadderton, but missed a penalty in the Macron Final shootout! A tremendous achievement to reach the 100 appearance mark Francis, well played.

A message from Frankus himself!

It’s a great achievement and I am proud to make 100 appearances for the Purps. It’s a great club to play for full of good people from the volunteers to the players & coaches, who all work so hard for the results on the pitch. The supporters have been brilliant since I signed and hopefully, we have many more trophies to win and appearances to come.

With the ongoing success of our football for everyone project and our brand-new walking football initiative we are starting to put the wheels in motion for our next scheme, Kits4Kids, a scheme which aims to provide children in the local area with the equipment and kit needed to participate in football. Families are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head never mind forking out £40/£50 for a pair of boots every year plus shin pads, kit etc, if you have more than one child you’re suddenly looking at spending a few hundred pounds, and that’s before any subs need paying. An analysis by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reveals cuts to benefits and tax credits under the Tory government will see children hardest hit, forecasting that around one and a half million more under-18s will live in households below the relative poverty line by 2022. The research, which analyses the

impact of welfare reforms between 2010 and 2018, shows households with lone parents and children are set to lose an average of £5,250 – almost one-fifth of their total net income, compared to a loss of £3,000 for couples with children. This will see the child poverty rate for those in lone parent households increase from 37 per cent to over 62 per cent. These children are of great risk of being isolated and abandoned socially. The life skills learned through football help empower individuals and enhance mental wellbeing, such as increased resiliency, self-esteem and connections with others. These features of football are beneficial to people of all ages, but they are especially vital to the healthy development of young people. We must do more to increase engagement and encourage young people into football, not stand by while they are priced out of the game through no fault of their own. This is where the fantastic City of Liverpool FC Supporters come in! If there are any old kits, boots or shin pads that your son/ daughter has grown out of then please do not hesitate to contact us and we can arrange a collection or drop them off at one of the home games where one of our Community team will collect them from you.
