CHAIRMAO Notes from the little Purple book of COLFC Chairman, Paul Manning.
Welcome to everybody for today’s match v Barnoldswick, especially the Directors, Management, Staff, players and supporters of Barnoldswick Town.
out 2-1 winners. The sad news reached us this week that Finney has got a very serious illness indeed and our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family and close friends. He is a complete one-off and I have spent many a coach journey to Liverpool games and lately many a Purps’ game being entertained by him and there is no doubt that COLFC will be a much less funny football club without his presence. The Purps have been blessed to be supported by many naturally funny and entertaining people; Tony Caveney, Kevin Morland and Ryan Worrall all spring to mind and are all original, funny people who don’t have to try too hard to make people smile – they are a pleasure to be around and Finney is right up there with them. God bless mate. Today is Regenda Day and we are expecting many Regenda staff members to come along for the first time and enjoy the Purple experience. I have said it before and I will say it again, the support that our club receives from the Regenda Group is second to none and we are very lucky to have had them along for our journey almost from the start. Today they are laying on a buffet and some drinks for all of the volunteers who run our matchdays, which is a very generous gesture and well received. Without the volunteers we simply would not have a club to support, so to see them recognized is superb. Thank you to Kevin Short and his team!! Good luck to both teams today, but here’s hoping for another three points for the Purps today and another game chalked off!!
There are now just six league games to go in the season including today’s match, so we are definitely at the business end of the season now and the lads have hit form again at just the right time with four wins on the bounce going into today’s game and not just any old wins either! Northwich Victoria are on an incredibly hot streak at the moment having reached the Semi Finals of the FA Vase and in doing so beating Sholing, the #1 rated team at Step 5 nationally in the quarter finals. We beat the Vics 2-1 for the third time this season. Next up we beat Ashton Athletic who as anyone who was present will tell you, where an excellent outfit, who really should have been three or four up against up by Half Time, but who wilted a bit in the second half against the Purple onslaught and again we won 2-1. Next up was the ultra-difficult physical task of beating Charnock Richard on their own ground, complete with the league’s top goalscorer Carl Grimshaw. The lads eventually ran out 3-0 winners despite being down to ten men for the entire second half. Last week, all the cards were stacked against us once Bootle had won in their early kick off, as we travelled to Litherland and on a bumpy pitch in howling wind, with the supporters completely detached from the action AND going a goal down on the stroke of half time to a terrible penalty decision, the team once again fought back and ran

Good evening and welcome to tonight’s game were we welcome Barnoldswick Town FC.
position with being comfortable at 1-0 so we have to learn and not come complacent which the players know! It was a debut for new signing James McCarten who we signed on dual reg from Warrington this week. A player I know well and is a big coup for the club as he’s one of the best about, he’s a great lad to have in the dressing room, he leads by example and he knows what it takes to be successful. It was also great to have Mike Robbo back involved after a long time out due to injury and has been impressive in training so hopefully we will manage to get him some game time before the end of the season. Lastly your support and atmosphere on Saturday really did push us on to get the victory, we couldn’t thank you enough! Let’s do the same tonight it’s another big game before we go into our semi final legs. Keep getting behind the lads!
A Tuesday night game at home which we have not had for a while and one we as a group are looking forward to as like I’ve said before each game can’t come quick enough at the minute. Saturday’s 3-2 win against Hanley was another 3 points and game ticked off to put us closer were we want to be. barnoldswicktown Formed in 1972 and named Barnoldswick United (1972), - so called due to being canny Yorkshiremen - had there had been a previous club named Barnoldswick United and they had outstanding debts the new club would have been liable for them. The field started out as a grazing meadow for cattle, after a lot of hard work, it is now the pitch we play on. The club had 2 teams playing in the Craven & District Football League in the early 1990’s we joined the East Lancashire Football League again with 2 teams. The 2003/2004 season brought the amalgamation of Barnoldswick United (1972), Barnoldswick Park Rovers and Salterforth Juniors and we changed our name to Barnoldswick Town Football Club. We then ran 3 senior teams. In the late 1990’s our 1st and 2nd teams joined The West Lancashire Football League, our 3rds staying in The East Lancashire Football League. It has always been in the club’s constitution to get our ground up to the minimum standards of The North West Counties Football League and the 2009/2010 season saw us accepted into The North West Counties Football League, for our 1st and 2nd teams. We have 2 pitches one being floodlit plus a floodlit training pitch. Our club house can hold up to 120 people and can be hired out for functions. Our main sponsor is Silentnight Beds Ltd and the ground is named The Silentnight Beds Stadium. For the 2013/2014 season we will have 12 junior teams, 3 entering the East Lancashire Alliance and the remaining 9 in the North Valley League. In 2009/2010 our first season in The NWCFL saw us finish Runners up in Division 1 and finalists in the prestigious West Riding County Cup beating Guiseley who won promotion to the Conference North along the way. It was an interesting season as we only expected to hold our own and try to make sure we didn�t end up at the bottom of the league. Following on from our success in the 2009/10 season we went from just looking to avoid relegation in the Premier Division 2010/11 to astound
ourselves by finishing a creditable 7th in the league, only suspensions and injuries we feel robbed us of a top three spot. The 2012/2013 season saw us finish 9th in the Premier Division and reaching a round further in The FA Vase. Our Reserves finishing 4th in their respective league, with players being selected for the first team squad showing we have strength and depth in the club. In March 2012 we achieved The FA Grade E. enabling the club to enter The Evostick League when finishing in a promotion position. The 2013/14 season was a little bit traumatic for the club, players leaving or not being available, unrest in the dressing room which led to poor performances on the field. The club parted with manager Paul Fildes replacing him with the current managerial team of Stewart Airdrie and James Gill. Off the field proved challenging as finances started to run a little low and it was a worry that the club may have to pull out of the NWCFL. However a rescue package was decided upon and Anne Wolfenden has come in and her business expertise is hopefully putting the club back on track. In June of 2014 we achieved Charter Standard Development Club at both Senior and Junior level, which was an excellent achievement by both Senior & Junior Committees. The season ended on a knife edge, if results on the last day of the season had gone a different way we would have been relegated! Looking forward to the new season, new players have been signed and it is hopeful that last seasons relegation battle will not be repeated! For the 2017/2018 Barnoldswick Town have 1 team in The newly named Hallmark Security League and 1 team in The Lancashire Football League Western Division (Galaxy League). The Junior section has

21 teams in The East Lancashire League from U7’s -U18’s, plus one U12’s girls team playing in The West Riding League. They also have a Tiny Town Junior Academy for 4 - 6 year olds. Towards the end of last season 2017/2018 there was a big upheaval at Barnoldswick Town, Firstly Danny Craig took over as Manager from Stewart Airdrie, Stewart in turn taking over the Chairman’s position from Ian James at the end of the season. Then a further shock came towards the end of June when our long standing Secretary Lynn James announced she was standing down at the end of the month! Commercial Secretary Alyson Norris took over the Secretaries job with Ian Holgate moving into the Treasures position, Ian’s job as Treasurer has been taken over by Steve Goodall, although he is still on the Committee. Let’s hope there are no more changes in the near future!! Part of our goal for the last couple of years has been forging a stronger link with Barnoldswick Town Juniors. Up until recently the only thing we shared was a name. Along with the junior committee we felt we needed to address this. So we now host their annual team presentations at our clubhouse and organise social events for both parents and children alike. We also have our younger junior teams taking part in pre match entertainment and player mascot days. We have a fantastic junior setup with over 20 teams which will only make the club stronger. It will be a gradual process but we do have a plan in place for bringing local talented footballers through via our East Lanc’s team, then on to our senior development squad. A number of East Lanc’s players have already this season shown hard work and determination & made the step up & are now playing for the development team on a regular basis. We are confident that it will become a successful gateway for players to see there is a definite path & work their way through from the juniors, to the first team. Towards the end of last season the club was hit by Manager Danny Craig’s announcement that he would be resigning his post at the end of the season. A bit of a blow as the team had finished fairly strongly in the league towards the end of the season finishing mid-table.
The Committee were soon on with trying to quickly find a replacement, this they found in Matthew Barnes who had been Manager at Maine Road from November 2017. Matt brought Hugh Devlin as his assistant along with Matthew Cavanagh who was already incumbent at Town as a player. Lewis Clemmett was brought in as Goalkeeping coach with Endrit Shehu as 1st team coach filling the last Managerial post. The East Lanc’s team finished off their season by winning the Morrison Cup 4-2 against local rivals Rolls-Royce, also finishing a creditable 3rd in the league. The league has however been re-organised and they have gained promotion to the 1st division. The other good news on the Junior front is that Town are entering another adult team which will be called Barnoldswick Town (EL) Reserves, once again made up of juniors who are coming through the youth system. Things can only get better, bring on the new season!! captains notes We are down to the final run in now and we have six cup finals left, and it’s so exciting to be involved in.
one of the best goals to be ever seen, and it deserves all the views and the attention it’s getting on twitter. Fair play to him, he was discussing how far of the line the keeper was with Jamie about two minutes before it so he 100% meant it. We then went behind conceding two sloppy goals, which we should never be conceding. But once again Jack and John bailed us out and got us the three points, which was another massive win. But it wouldn’t be the purps if we done it the easy way. We play Barnoldswick tonight who are a good team and we had a close game earlier on in the season, we will have to be at our best to get the three points and extend our lead at the top.
Everyone wants to stop us winning the league and it’s down to us to not let it happen. It’s closer than we ever wanted it to be but it keeps us on our toes and we know that we can’t slip up anywhere cause people are an our tails waiting for us to drop points. Hanley was another tough game, but in fairness we made it harder than it should have been. We were cruising in the first half really, without playing too well. Karlo’s unbelievable goal in the first half was the difference. If a player in the premiership had done that it would go down as

With the ongoing success of our football for everyone project and our brand-new walking football initiative we are starting to put the wheels in motion for our next scheme, Kits4Kids, a scheme which aims to provide children in the local area with the equipment and kit needed to participate in football. Families are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head never mind forking out £40/£50 for a pair of boots every year plus shin pads, kit etc, if you have more than one child you’re suddenly looking at spending a few hundred pounds, and that’s before any subs need paying. An analysis by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reveals cuts to benefits and tax credits under the Tory government will see children hardest hit, forecasting that around one and a half million more under-18s will live in households below the relative poverty line by 2022. The research, which analyses the
impact of welfare reforms between 2010 and 2018, shows households with lone parents and children are set to lose an average of £5,250 – almost one-fifth of their total net income, compared to a loss of £3,000 for couples with children. This will see the child poverty rate for those in lone parent households increase from 37 per cent to over 62 per cent. These children are of great risk of being isolated and abandoned socially. The life skills learned through football help empower individuals and enhance mental wellbeing, such as increased resiliency, self-esteem and connections with others. These features of football are beneficial to people of all ages, but they are especially vital to the healthy development of young people. We must do more to increase engagement and encourage young people into football, not stand by while they are priced out of the game through no fault of their own.
