NOTES FROM CHAIRMAO
PAUL MANNING It would be very easy to write a load of hot air (I am good at it!) about the pandemic and 6 months and missing football, but all I want to say on the subject is that around 60,000 people in the UK have died. All those families devastated and hundreds of thousands of other people have been sick. All of our frontline workers in the NHS and other services have put their own lives at risk, so as a club we pay our respects to them all and be grateful that we are still here and able to get on with our lives. Compared to the cost that they have sustained, having to wear a mask occasionally or make some other small sacrifice seems quite easy indeed.
season, we can see what an incredibly tough start to life in the NPL we had last Season and have again this season! Marske (3rd), Workington (1st) and Ramsbottom (2nd) in our opening 4 games was and is as tough an ask as is possible. Last season it constituted 2 away games and a home game, from which we took zero points. This season it constitutes 2 home games and an away game and could well give us a big indication as to any progression the squad has made. Hopefully, we can deliver a better points return this time. Last week at Glossop North End in the FA Cup was a genuinely brilliant performance from the Purps in my opinion. The lads stood up strong against a physically imposing team, before class told and what looks like a comfortable 3-0 was achieved. Believe me our lads had to battle for 90 minutes to get the win and keep a clean sheet – but that’s exactly what they did and all credit to them and Robbo and his staff for earning the victory.
Today we welcome the Directors, Staff, Players and Supporters of Marske United to the much revamped & improved Berry Street Garage Stadium for the opening game of Season 2020/21 North- If that level of performance and attitude is ern Premier League North / West Division. replicated every week, then we can look forward to a very positive season ahead, starting today Seeing as though last season was Null & Voided hopefully. we don’t have to recall two tight games against Marske, were they emerged victorious on both I’d like to personally thank all of the supporters occasions 1-0. who have bought tickets and travelled down from Marske today and in doing so will spend That first game of the season at Marske and the their hard earned money with City of Liverpool 1-0 defeat still rankles, as we could and should FC today. We appreciate that times are hard for have got something out of the game and got the everyone currently, so to make a 300? Mile round season off to a more positive start after the long trip in the current circumstances is to be praised journey North. – but of course we hope they go home empty handed and disappointed!! There is no doubt that our Division must be one of the toughest, if not the toughest at Step 4 in #UTP the country. Top sides from all across the North competing for 3 promotion places and now having seen the final league standings from last

MATCH PREVIEW
COLFC VSLUKE MARSKE DENSON UTD
For those Purps with a peculiar sense of deja vu, yes we are playing Marske again on the opening day of our League campaign! In order to quickly produce a fixture list for the season, the League officials have taken last years fixtures and just flipped them. So whereas last year we began away at Marske, we now play them at home. City of Liverpool began the season last Saturday with a comprehensive 3-0 away win to Glossop NE in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. A number of outstanding individual performances on the day, with goals from Elliot Nevitt, Gerard Kinsella and Jack Hazlehurst meant we have now reached at least the 1st
Qualifying Round in each of our last 3 seasons. Marske themselves have also reached the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Cup following a 2-0 away win over Crook Town AFC which was preceeded by a 3-0 home win against North Shields. This will be the 3rd meeting between the Purps and Marske United. Our previous two fixtures both coming last season. Both games where keenly contested however Markse won each of these matches 1-0. Hopefully third time’s the charm for the Purps today!
OUR OPPONENTS TODAY
MARKSE UTD The club was established in 1956 by members of Marske Cricket Club and initially played in the Cleveland League and then the South Bank League before moving up to the Teesside League in 1976. The Seasiders won both the Teesside League and the North Riding County Cup in 1980–81 and were league champions again in 1984–85, after which the club moved up to the Wearside League. The following season saw the club win the North Riding County Cup for a second time. Marske were runners-up in the Wearside League in 1993–94 and 1994–95, a season that also saw them win the North Riding Senior Cup and the League Cup. They went on to win the Wearside League title in 1995–96, as well as retaining the League Cup.
After finishing as runners-up again in 1996–97, the club were promoted to Division Two of the Northern League. In their first season in Division Two they finished third and were promoted to Division One. The club were relegated back to Division Two at the end of the 2003–04 season but were promoted to Division One in 2010–11 after finishing third. They won the League Cup in 2013–14 beating Whitley Bay 2-1 after extra time in a game played at St James’ Park to celebrate 125 years of the Northern League and were
Northern League champions the following season though promotion wasn’t taken as the club had not applied. Division One runners-up in 2015–16, in 2017–18 they reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase for the first time in their history, losing 3–2 on aggregate to Stockton Town. The 2017–18 season saw Marske win the Division One title again, earning promotion to Division One East of the Northern Premier League and to Step 4 of the Non-League System for the first time in their history. Their first season at a higher level saw the club consolidate, finishing in 10th place as well as reaching the quarter-finals of the Integro League Cup, where they lost on penalties to Buxton. They also reached the final of the North Riding Senior Cup, where they lost on penalties to fellow Northern Premier League team Scarborough Athletic, following a 2-2 draw
after 90 minutes. When the 2020/21 was curtailed, Marske were sitting in 5th place, their highest ever placing within the Non-League System, and looking set for the play-offs.

ROBBO TALKS
CRAIG ROBINSON will be more over the cause of the season I’m sure but to be successful we have to improve I feel we have and it’s shown in some of our results in pre season.
Good afternoon and welcome to today’s game were we welcome Marske in our first league game of the season. It’s been a long and frustrating wait for this day to come with the world we are living in at the moment.
The lads have worked hard in difficult circumstances with it being the longest pre season I’ve known and I couldn’t praise them enough the work they have put in and I feel we are in a good place and that showed last week in our 3-0 win away to Glossop in the Fa cup. Glossop were big physical side that competed well and were very direct, it was a difficult game to go into with it being our first competitive game in 6 months.
I’m not going to lie it has been difficult period from when our season was ended last March due to the pandemic. It’s been a difficult time for us all but one thing that has come out of all this is that it has shown us all what is important in life our family, friends and our health and I hope you and your families have all have kept safe and well throughout this period.
The lads put a professional performance in and I always felt we had another gear if we needed to but they managed the game well which I felt we didn’t have last season. We have a strong squad and there is a lot of competition for places which gives me a headache but il take that because it keeps everyone on there toes knowing someone is ready to take there shirt if they don’t perform.
One thing I’d like to touch on is the tremendous work that kept doing behind the scenes at the football club looking out for the community supporting people in need with the food banks. In tough times people come together in support and this club certainly did that in abundance and everyone involved deserves tremendous credit and everyone connected with the club should be proud of all the work that the club do and will continue to do in the future.
We’ve got a good mix and characters in the dressing room now but most importantly they are winners, hungry players that have been successful were ever they have been and know what it takes to win games! I’m excited to for the new season and there is no better game to go up against Marske who we’re one of the better teams we come up against last season and a team that will be up near the top come end of the season.
We’ve made a few changes during the break which I felt was needed to improve the squad players have moved on and I wish them all the best but that is football there
I’m hoping on a good crowd to get behind the lads and show what great support we have to the new players we have brought in! Enjoy the game and thank you for all your support! Robbo

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation is a charity set up in memory of Daniel Wilkinson who died in 2016 aged 24, while playing the game he loved, from an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC). Dan played football from an early age and joined Hull City AFC when he was 10, earning a professional contract aged 18. Loughborough University followed where he completed a degree in Accounting and Financial Management while playing non-league football. He was an athlete who enjoyed the gym and took his health and nutrition very seriously. He lived life to the full and had so much ahead of him. Other than feeling light-headed on a few occasions in the month before he died, he had no symptoms!
SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IN THE YOUNG (SCD) SCD is the leading cause of death in young athletes during sport and the majority of deaths occur with NO SYMPTOMS or family history. ARVC can be found in one in every 1,000 to 5,000 young adults - IF IT IS LOOKED FOR. Warning signs may include light-headedness, fainting, palpitations, swollen legs, breathlessness. Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die from previously undiagnosed heart conditions. In Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 89%.
OUR MISSION The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise awareness of SCD and to provide funding towards heart screening, defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training primarily for grass-roots sporting teams. Tragedies can be prevented through cardiac screening. It is vital that young people are identified and treated.
