NOTES FROM THE CHAIRMAN

PAUL MANNING Against Marine in November, we signed the goalie, right back and a centre half the day before and the left back (Zac Aley) walked into the ground limping!! It was ridiculous. If we even discussed signing a player, he got injured in his next game! Season 2021/22 is nearly over after a long, hard gruelling season. It started badly, got worse and just kept on getting worse and yet somehow, we have achieved our highest ever league placing (8th in Step 4 of the football pyramid) and our best ever showing in the FA Cup (3rd qualifying round).

When we asked John Lavin to become club secretary I promised him a relatively straightforward time for someone who was well organised with good inter-personal skills. After season 2021/22 he looks about 10 years older than he really is – he has not stopped!

Having had to use 50+ players bares testament to the horrific injury list that we have had to carry throughout the season.

All of this is to say that what Ello and the staff and all of the squad did in having us in a steady mid-table position throughout most of the season, eventually being 9th currently is nothing short of remarkable – we could quite easily have been relegation contenders.

The injuries started early (Hughes and Kelly at Vauxhall Motors in pre-season) continued with Burkey nearly getting his leg broken at Northwich (still pre-season) and continued on and on and on right up to Glossop last week with Edgar being forced off.

And saying all of that we should still have been in and around the play-offs!!! Ello was fuming most of the time at the chances missed and the goals conceded. The points we have left on various pitches is ridiculous, but that’s football I suppose.

Pre-Season was decimated due to COVID postponements and the weather.

Playing out in Ellesmere Port has been a hindrance to us and whilst we wholeheartedly thank Vauxhall Sports & Social Club for hosting us – its been hard motivating ourselves to go and organise and play games there.

The injury situation got so bad that Danny Brady went off injured after 3 minutes off his debut with a dislocated shoulder, whilst supporters where still coming out of the bar! Danny wasn’t the only debutant to be seriously hurt on his debut either. We count 5 players, who we signed, and then got injured in their first games.

All the volunteers and supporters who have made it their business to ensure they kept coming deserve enormous credit as well. We are used to big crowds and big atmospheres and 250 odd people in a

NOTES FROM THE CHAIRMAN

PAUL MANNING ground that needs 2000-3000 to feel full, hasn’t been much fun at all. As you will have seen we have already started work securing the key squad payers for next season, before announcing the new additions once the season is over with their current club. We will be moving back to the Berry St Garage Stadium, and we are certain that that is going to help us with attendances and attracting the locally based players that we are looking at. We are currently working on partnerships with various companies, which will hopefully lead to a main Club Sponsor and other partnerships over the coming months, but let’s face it times are hard in this neck of the woods for everybody. Our partnership with Puma has also ended and we have exciting news about our new kit supplier to be released shortly. Our lease at PurpleHUB has been extended with KMBC and our plans for the facility are very exciting indeed and we are still in the planning process with Liverpool City Council over land in Fazackerley that is slowly moving forward. So here we are with just 3 games left in the season and today we welcome the Directors, Staff, Players and Supporters of Newcastle Town. Earlier on in the season we won a hard fought 3 points in Staffordshire with goals from Potter (2) and Rigby, but until Xenon Bahula came on late, the game was in the balance after a wonder strike from

Newcastle – it seems a long time ago now! We’d like to thank Newcastle Town for originally agreeing to move the game to last night, but we felt that without full endorsement from our shareholder / members, it was not appropriate to play a game on the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, indeed to move a game to be played on that date, so that those of us of a Red persuasion could watch the FA cup semi-final. I felt we would be damned if we did, damned if we didn’t. It’s been a long time since we moved a game to accommodate a Liverpool game, but especially to move a game to this particular date. As a survivor of the disaster, I know I wouldn’t have felt comfortable doing so, but with an upcoming AGM, it can be debated and a club policy can be ratified for future years, especially as next year the 15th falls on a Saturday. On that point, our club would like to pay its respects to everybody affected by the disaster. Victims, families, survivors and not forgetting the activists who kept the fight for justice going for 30 plus years. RIP 97 football supporters who went to a football match and didn’t come home. OUR OPPONENTS TODAY

Newcastle Town Newcastle Town Football Club - A Brief History Newcastle Town FC emerged in its current format from a merger with Parkway Clayton in 1986 and are now enjoying life in Evostik League Football.

Their recently renamed Red Industries Stadium in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire has a capacity of 4,000, covered accommodation for 1000, seating for 300, a tidy well equipped clubhouse which offers amongst other beverages quality cask conditioned ale, and a £60,000 floodlighting system. The playing surface is surrounded by one of the few recognised cycling tracks in the north of the country which hosts many competitions and has been used by the Great British Cycling Team in the recent past.

In the season immediately after the merger with Parkway Clayton Newcastle Town enjoyed much success ending runners up in the Mid Cheshire League and moving into the North West Counties League as a limited company in 1987.

After promotion from Division Two in the early 1990’s the club enjoyed a lot of success in Division One winning the Tennants Floodlit Trophy, the Walsall Senior Cup and the NWCL Floodlit Trophy although constantly just missing out on promotion at the death. In the 96/97 season the club enjoyed a tremendous run in the FA Cup defeating Winsford United, Frickley and Bamber Town from the Unibond League on their way to the first round proper where they narrowly lost to Notts County, the oldest league club

in the world, at what was to be one of the last cup ties at Stoke City’s famous Victoria Ground.

Following the turn of the century promotion continued to escape the clutches of Newcastle Town although playing extremely entertaining football under the likes of managers Ray Walker before his move to Crewe Alexandria and Nigel Gleghorn formerly with Stoke City. In the season 2006/07 Towns form fell away after a very promising start and management duo Greg Clowes and Dorian Garner took over the reins after a successful period with Unibond side Alsager Town. Results picked up and new players arrived with Castle only losing 4 of their last 18 games in the new duos first season in charge. Paul Ratcliffe also took over as Chairman of the club at this time. The next couple of years saw the management continue to build a side that would challenge for promotion although both proved disappointing with Castle again narrowly missing out mainly due to key players injuries. Despite the disappointment of no promotion Newcastle players Simon

Eldershaw (Player of the Month) Jon Ritchie (Safe Hands) and Richard Minor (Division1 Player of the Season) brought success with their awards.

Finally in Season 2009/10 Newcastle Town achieved their dream of promotion. They led the Vodkat League from day 1 and by the time they dropped their first points having won the first 28 games, the title was almost secure. Best start, most League wins in a season and most points were three of the records that the club broke. They also lifted the Staffs Senior Cup for the first time with an amazing 6-1 victory over Port Vale at Vale Park.

Hardly had the team’s success sunk in when Newcastle Town were rocked in the close season with both Manager Greg Clowes and Assistant Dorian Garner leaving for Stafford Rangers taking the whole squad with them.

Undaunted the club followed current policy and appointed from within with John Diskin, Dave Sutton and Ivan Lodge being promoted from their respective roles with both the second Team and the Youth Team. Their brief was to rebuild a First Team squad capable of confirming their position within the Evostik First Division.

Currently Castle seem to have achieved their goal sitting mid table with notable results against teams challenging for promotion this season as well as winning performances in competitions against teams from higher divisions.

Castle ended the 2011-12 season in a respectable position but with higher hopes as there was a great deal of success from the younger players coming through at the club.

Town continued to build for the future in 2012-13 in a season which saw an influx of their successful Youth Team into the First Team Squad as the season progressed.

Season 2013-14 saw Castle’s young side improve throughout the season and finish a very respectable eighth in the League. With the Young Reserve side reaching the final of the Leek Cup and the Youth Team winning the County Youth Floodlit Cup Newcastle will be looking to push on and continue their development.

Further improvement came in 2014-15 with Castle reaching the play-offs where they were defeated by Sutton Coldfield Town who were promoted to the Premier Division. Town’s policy of developing youngsters looks to be paying dividends as more trophies were forthcoming. Newcastle also won awards for Fair Play and their lack of dissent as they build a reputation of playing the game in the right manner with good football.

The season saw Town struggle with injuries culminating with Manager Ivan Lodge suffering a stroke. Ivan decided to step down to concentrate on his recovery and at the end of the season his brother-in-law and former Norton and Witton Manager Scott Dundas was appointed with assistant Steve Chadwick to the role to take the Club forward.

Castle had a strong season being in contention throughout for a play-off position but narrowly missed out on the last day of the season. Shortly afterwards Town were again searching for a manager after the surprise resignation of Scott Dundas.

Scott was replaced by Bob Askey but after a promising start with the club

in a challenging position things went downwards and as Castle dropped down the table Bob was replaced by Robin Van Der Laan and Dave Dale. Things did not improve and Town saved themselves from relegation winning their final game at home to Belper Town.

Changes came in the close season with former Chairman Paul Ratcliffe returning and the Club looking to improve on last season. New sponsors Red Industries have returned to the club and with the young players coming through Castle look to have a bright future. As the season went on Castle produced a mixed bag of results but having produced a series of good results against the top teams 2019-20 looks to be full of promise for the young side. Improved as the season went on pulling themselves away from the relegation area as new players arrived. Sadly the season was cut short due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Newcastle will be looking to continue the improvement this season as the young players mature.

Late start, early finish was again the story of the 2020-21 season as another wave of the Coronavirus pandemic swept the country and a much improved season saw Castle sitting in third place with just one defeat as football was called to an end in November and the season nullified early in the new year. As the pandemic looks to being controlled the new season looks bright for the club. Let’s hope it’s third time lucky.

COLFC 1ST TEAM in 2020, only to be narrowly beaten by Manchester United at Old Trafford. The towering defender left Wigan at the end of the 2019-20 season and joined Chorley where he has continued his development in their Under 21 side, before making the step up to First Team football over the summer. A confident ball playing defender, Isherwood is highly adept at both centre back and right back and has impressed for the Purps during several cameos as a trialist during pre-season.

Nathan Burke – Midfielder Captain and an energetic and accomplished midfielder, Nathan has a great reputation in the game having started his career at the Liverpool FC Academy. The 25 year old scouser spent nine years at the Premier League club, where he held the role of captain at various youth levels. James is highly capable of operating in a number of positions across the midfield.

Glenn Rule – Midfielder Birkenhead-born Rule started his career at Chester before representing then-NPL side Colwyn Bay, Stalybridge Celtic and Airbus. After making over 100 appearances for Airbus, Glenn made the move to Stockport County where he appeared in 23 games and scored two goals, including a stunning strike against Nuneaton in 2015. Our new signing later returned to Airbus before spells at Bala Town and Vauxhall Motors. The 24-year-old spent the summer of 2020 on trial with the Purps, impressing as “Trialist #1” in a number of pre-season fixtures before moving

COLFC 1ST TEAM to America to play for College side San Jose State University Spartans. A classy left-footed midfielder, Max started out at Liverpool Academy before moving to Bolton Wanderers at the age of 10, where he stayed until he was 18.

Jack, 22, signed from Liverpool Football College in 2017 and has gone on to play 112 games, scoring 38 goals for the club. The tricky attacking midfielder has become a firm fans favourite and has scored some memorable goals along the way.

Josh, 25, joined the Purps in November from local club Burscough after some dazzling performances including 15 goals and 5 man of the match awards in the NWCFL Premier. The forward will also be a familiar name to followers of the Liverpool Sunday football scene, with various clips of spectacular strikes by Josh for FC Dovecot and Sefton Athletic

Whilst with the Clarets, Chakwana featured regularly on the scoresheet for their Academy sides and left the Turf Moor club in 2017.

Lewis Mckinney – Striker

Ryan Gibson – Striker

McKinney played for Burnley’s youth teams before joining Oldham Athletic for the start of the 2017–18 season, signing two-year scholarship forms to join the club’s youth team from the 2018-19 season.[2] He made his first-team debut as a 69th-minute substitute for Mohamed Maouche in a 1–0 defeat to Macclesfield Town at Boundary Park on 19 October 2019. [3][4] In November 2019, he joined Runcorn Linnets on a month’s work experience loan.[5]

A pacey forward by-trade, Gibson joined his hometown club Linnets midway through the 2018-19 season and immediately made an impression at the Millbank Linnets Stadium before joining league rivals Widnes FC and then making the switch over to join us at City of Liverpool FC.

Our new signing, known as “T”, made his debut off the bench during this seasons 2-2 draw at Leek Town and took no time at all to hit the ground running.

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation is a charity set up in memory of Daniel Wilkinson who died in 2016 aged 24, while playing the game he loved, from an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC). Dan played football from an early age and joined Hull City AFC when he was 10, earning a professional contract aged 18. Loughborough University followed where he completed a degree in Accounting and Financial Management while playing non-league football. He was an athlete who enjoyed the gym and took his health and nutrition very seriously. He lived life to the full and had so much ahead of him. Other than feeling light-headed on a few occasions in the month before he died, he had no symptoms!

SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IN THE YOUNG (SCD) SCD is the leading cause of death in young athletes during sport and the majority of deaths occur with NO SYMPTOMS or family history. ARVC can be found in one in every 1,000 to 5,000 young adults - IF IT IS LOOKED FOR. Warning signs may include light-headedness, fainting, palpitations, swollen legs, breathlessness. Every week in the UK, 12 apparently fit and healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die from previously undiagnosed heart conditions. In Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, they have reduced the incidence of young sudden cardiac death by 89%.

OUR MISSION The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise awareness of SCD and to provide funding towards heart screening, defibrillators and CPR/defibrillator training primarily for grass-roots sporting teams. Tragedies can be prevented through cardiac screening. It is vital that young people are identified and treated.
