CHAIRMAO Notes from the little Purple book of COLFC Chairman, Paul Manning.

Welcome everyone to TDP Stadium for tonight’s visit of Runcorn Town.

Purples and of course this season we have also signed prolific goalscorer Craig Cairns and midfield dynamo Joe Holt. But a less well known connection is that in the first ever match played by COLFC (a behind closed doors trial match away at Stockport Town) we played in a light blue kit lent to us by Runcorn Town (as our kit had not yet arrived!) Our two previous encounters have ended in draws; 0-0 at our place last season in front of a crowd of 497 and 2-2 at Runcorn last Easter. On both occasions the Purps were reduced to ten men for large parts of the game, so I am officially claiming us as the moral victors in both games! At one point last season we were 19 points behind Town in the League table, but our good end to the season eventually saw that reduced to nine points, but we just couldn’t get any closer to them. On the day that they finally made a slip up against Ashton Athletic, we also lost at Hanley Town although it was all academic for both sides anyway, as only two teams were promoted from the league. Everything is set up for what promises to be a tremendous event tonight, with a big crowd expected and a clash of footballing styles on the pitch promising more goals and more drama.

As most of you know or should know, Town are sitting atop the Hallmark Security League Premier Division after a good start with five league wins from five games. As we have all seen with our own two eyes, it is extremely difficult to win three games on the run in this league, never mind five so I want to congratulate everybody associated with Runcorn Town on what has been a good start to the season. We’ve had a good start ourselves with three wins out of four and are tucked in in fourth place with a game in hand, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is winning the three points and I know that Craig, his staff and the squad are all focused on that going into the game. There is a big connection between COLFC and Runcorn Town, due mainly to Simon Burton leaving Town to become our first ever manager and bringing with him some of his coaching staff and players; notably Tom Spearritt, Danny Dalton, Chris Lester, Chris Dykes, Daley Woods to name just a few. Dave Forbes then made the move over to the

improve upon again. The most pleasing thing was the performance overall and the three goals from Tom Peterson. I was so pleased for him. He’s been unlucky not to start and has waited patiently. With Craig Cairns out injured, he well and truly took his opportunity. Its not only his performances and goals, Tom is a great lad to have around and loved by everyone and although he’s been disappointed not to start games lately, his attitude and work rate when coming on has never changed and always been to a high standard. I made an example of him after the Burscough game and the lads all gave him a round of applause which he thoroughly deserved. Because we have such a strong squad, players are going to be disappointed from time to time, but it’s a long season and every member of the squad will play their part and it’s attitudes like Toms that we need and I couldn’t be happier for him. I’d like you all to join me in congratulating Franny Foy and his partner on the birth of his son last week. Baby & Mum arrived home Saturday morning just in time for Franny to leg it to the TDP for the Glossop game. Back to tonight, I hope you all enjoy the game and get behind the lads and make some noise as the players really do need your support. We love hearing you sing the songs in support of the lads and the team and we can’t thank you enough. We’ll be doing our bit tonight to allow you to do yours, so lets get the place rocking.

Runcorn have had a good start to the season like us and we both find ourselves unbeaten, so tonight has all the makings of being a great game. As a player, these should be the games that you love to play and one which me and my staff are all looking forward to. Last Saturday we drew with Glossop North End in the FA Cup which has led to a replay next Tuesday night away. I felt we deserved to win the game and were comfortable throughout apart from the 10 minute spell just after half time, where we found ourselves 1-0 down. We got ourselves back in the game and I felt that there was only going to be one winner from then on. Craig Cairns was very unlucky to be flagged offside when clearly onside for a disallowed goal and that came right as we had Glossop rocking. But we go again Tuesday with every chance of progressing against the winners of Droylsden and Squires Gate. On Bank holiday we played Burscough and it was really pleasing performance and win, as they are always a tough nut to crack and came into the game on the back of three great results. Of course, we won the game 3-0, I felt we were always comfortable even when down to ten men in the last 20 minutes. We kept the ball better than we have been of late and its something I know we can

RUNCORNTOWN In September 1968, a works team from ‘D’ section of the local Castner Kellner plant were formed known as CKD, and were one of the founders of the Runcorn Sunday League. Now 50 years later, that same team is known by the name of Runcorn Town, and is looking to celebrate this anniversary by having another crack at promotion to the Evo-Stik. It’s fair to say that the club has had a few identities over the years. The club changed name to Mond in 1970, reflecting the Mond Division of ICI of which ran the Castner Keller plant, and three years later added the Rangers to their name. In 2005 came the latest name change to Runcorn Town in order to try and bring a more professional look to the club in general, as well as trying to improve facilities at the club with a view to joining the Non-League Pyramid. This they would achieve five years later but we are jumping ahead, so let’s start at the beginning. The early years of the club were not that great with Runcorn having a thriving Sunday League at the time. So in 1973 the club made the decision to try Saturday football in the impressive Warrington and District League (WDL), joining in Division Five. At the end of that first season, they amalgamated with struggling ICI Weston who played in the WDL Division One, and became one of the strongest sides in the league. They remained in the WDL until 1984 when they were elected to join the West Cheshire League (WCL) Division Two. The club established themselves as a solid mid-table team and in 1991/92 won their first silverware in the West Cheshire Bowl.

The following two seasons saw third place finishes, also reaching two more Bowl Finals of which they won one. Promotion finally came in 1994/95 when they finished second in the league scoring 118 goals. They also reached the Final of the Cheshire Amateur Cup but lost to Poulton Victoria in a match played at Prenton Park, Tranmere. Despite sharing the Bill Weight Memorial Trophy in that first season, Division One proved a struggle and they were relegated for the first time in the clubs history in 2001/02. Success returned in 2004/05 with the team finishing as runners up in Division Two, winning the Runcorn Senior Cup and reaching the final of the Bowl. Back in Division One, the new season got off to a good start with the Bill Weight Memorial Cup won early on and the Runcorn Cup added, but on the final day of the season, they slipped into the relegation places for the first time to suffer a heart-breaking relegation. Town quickly regrouped and bounced back the next season by winning Division Two for the first time, this also being the club’s first Championship. The following three seasons saw top four finishes, although the main progression was off the field as the ground was transformed. Hard standing, seating and floodlights were installed for the first time, with the dressing rooms also upgraded. This enabled the club to be elected to the North West Counties

League at the start of the 2010/11 season, with the club also entering the FA Vase and the Cheshire Senior Cup for the first time in their history. It is fair to say that the first season in the league exceeded all expectations under Simon Burton’s leadership, with the team losing just two league matches as they secured promotion to the Premier Division as runners-up, with James McShane finishing as the league’s overall leading scorer with 43 goals. The Quarter Final of the Division One Trophy was also reached as well as the Semi Final of the Challenge Cup. In the clubs’ FA Vase debut season, the club also wrote headlines as they progressed through four successive away ties before bowing out in the in the Last 32 stage against Dunston UTS, the last remaining North West Counties League side in the competition. The first season in the Premier Division saw Town continue in the same vein that they left Division One, with the team losing out on the title on the last day of the season to Ramsbottom United. James McShane once again topped the league scoring charts with Town scoring over 120 goals in all competitions. The club were also once again the last remaining NWCL side in the FA Vase, this time reaching a replay in the Last 32 before bowing out, as well as making their debut in the FA Cup, winning two games before bowing out to Evo-Stik League side Ashton United. The 2012/13 season saw Town finish fourth in the league, with the main highlight of the season coming in the FA Vase. This

saw the club reach the Last 16 for the first time, losing in extra time to Walsall Wood. Another good scalp came in the Cheshire Senior Cup with a 5-0 away win at Warrington which earned the “Team of the Round” award. The 2013/14 season saw Town finish fifth, and they disappointingly lost at holders Whitley Bay in the Second Round of the FA Vase, but the club had its first decent FA Cup run. Wins against Bootle, Goole and Witton Albion set up a tie at Conference North leaders Barrow, 83 places above them in the pyramid. Town shocked their hosts with a 1-0 win thanks to Andy Potter’s stunning goal, with Town losing in the Third Qualifying Round to Norton United. Two poor seasons followed finishing 13th in both, with Chris Herbert appointed manager at the start of the 2016/17 season. It was an uphill battle to get a squad together, with only one player retained from the previous season. There were no real cup runs this year, but Town bounced back in the league to finish third, level on points with runners-up Bootle. Last season saw the club get off to a record breaking start as they won their first 11 games of the season, with the first defeat coming in November. But the bad weather over winter saw momentum halted, playing just once in 35 days, and in ten league games until February, Town picked up just seven points. The end to the season was almost as good as the start, but they left themselves too much to do and finished third once more with a club record 93 points.

captains notes It’s been a good week for us, still unbeaten, a good draw in the FA cup and Franny Foy celebrating the birth of his baby boy. You really have to take your hat off to Franny he has played two games in the week his baby was born and has played unbelievable in both games so fair play to Franny.

everything we can to win. Saturday was all about the three points and I am delighted for TP getting his hat-trick, no one works harder and his attitude this season has been class and he fully deserved his goals. Was also good to get a first clean sheet of the season. Tonight is a big game, Runcorn are flying and will come here full of confidence as they are unbeaten and top of the league. We know as a squad if we play to our best we can beat anyone and tonight we are looking at nothing less than three points. Friday night top of the table clash under the lights, it doesn’t get much better. Let’s get a big crowd through the gate and get the shed end bouncing!

Paul Williams has come in and slotted into the team really well, he’s an experienced player and a good lad and I’m sure he will do very well for us. Glossop was a tough game but I think we matched them in all areas of the pitch and we were unlucky not to win the game but we have got to go to Glossop on Tuesday on a positive and do

Retired Residents set to improve their skills and leave lasting legacies Residents of a Regenda Homes Independent Living scheme in Liverpool are set to use their past to improve their computer skills in the present, thanks to a £10,000 National Lottery Grant. The money will be used to improve the IT facilities at St Peter’s Court in Aigburth and pay for an oral and local history project, which aims to allow over 20 residents to document their own life stories, leaving a lasting legacy for their families.

Dr Paul Otterson and Colin Robinson, lecturers at Liverpool John Moores University, will deliver the programme, concentrating first on IT skills and then on the history project. Dr Paul Otterson said: “There is lots of evidence that people learn new skills more efficiently when the task is relevant and meaningful to them. This is particularly so in the case of IT and so this project is a great way to help older residents improve their IT proficiency. If you would like to get involved in the project visit www.regenda.org.uk for further information.

The project takes its inspiration from the work of New York Times bestselling author and education expert, Sir Ken Robinson, whose younger brother John is a resident at St Peter’s Court.

With the ongoing success of our football for everyone project and our brand-new walking football initiative we are starting to put the wheels in motion for our next scheme, Kits4Kids, a scheme which aims to provide children in the local area with the equipment and kit needed to participate in football. Families are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head never mind forking out £40/£50 for a pair of boots every year plus shin pads, kit etc, if you have more than one child you’re suddenly looking at spending a few hundred pounds, and that’s before any subs need paying. An analysis by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reveals cuts to benefits and tax credits under the Tory government will see children hardest hit, forecasting that around one and a half million more under-18s will live in households below the relative poverty line by 2022. The research, which analyses the

impact of welfare reforms between 2010 and 2018, shows households with lone parents and children are set to lose an average of £5,250 – almost one-fifth of their total net income, compared to a loss of £3,000 for couples with children. This will see the child poverty rate for those in lone parent households increase from 37 per cent to over 62 per cent. These children are of great risk of being isolated and abandoned socially. The life skills learned through football help empower individuals and enhance mental wellbeing, such as increased resiliency, self-esteem and connections with others. These features of football are beneficial to people of all ages, but they are especially vital to the healthy development of young people. We must do more to increase engagement and encourage young people into football, not stand by while they are priced out of the game through no fault of their own. This is where the fantastic City of Liverpool FC Supporters come in! If there are any old kits, boots or shin pads that your son/ daughter has grown out of then please do not hesitate to contact us and we can arrange a collection or drop them off at one of the home games where one of our Community team will collect them from you.
