CHAIRMAO Notes from the little Purple book of COLFC Chairman, Paul Manning.

Well that wasn’t a bad little week was it?

Whitchurch won the Play-Offs last season and we all know how great a feeling that is and what a boost it can give you, so we know that the Reds will be coming here looking to put one over us and The Ponytail scored a hat-trick recently, so we’ll need to keep an eye on his movement. They also always bring a large, vocal support which adds a dash of colour and noise to games at TDP and is most welcomed, so I’m calling on all of our supporters to welcome our friends from Shropshire and give them our famous scouse hospitality. We have had some issues creeping back into the matches again, which seems to happen periodically, but please just knock it off!! All you are doing is costing the club money that we could be spending on the pitch to help Robbo take us to where we want to go. If you are not here for the purpose of supporting the team’s success we don’t know why you bother coming. All in all its been an excellent start to the season and long may it continue – winning feels great and puts a smile on everybody’s face, so in short let’s keep smiling!

Beat Runcorn Town 4-0, beat Glossop NE in extra time and wallop Squires Gate 5-1 and in all three games, we really could have won by more. Our complete domination of each game certainly warranted it. Then we get the plumb draw in the FA Cup away to Non-League giants Chester FC of the National League North. Before the draw I was torn between a big away game or a home tie against someone from a similar level as ourselves, so to get the big away draw was sensational and my phone literally never stopped buzzing yesterday. This is the kind of FA Cup tie that increases interest in our club tenfold and one that we have been hoping and waiting for. But first we’ve got three exceptionally important league games starting tonight against old friends and foes Whitchurch Alport and the management and squad will have to be focused on each of these challenges first before becoming focused upon the big FA Cup Tie.

managers notes So welcome to everyone from Whitchurch. I know the two clubs have always had friendly relations and two great sets of fans! It’s been a very good couple of weeks for the club and we want to keep it going and carry on winning games.

say. Even though he hasn’t had that bit of luck lately in front of goal, his workrate has been immense and I’ve been more than happy with his performances. The reward for those tow performances is the big away tie at Chester FC in the next round of the FA Cup. I know a lot of these lads and have played against them a few times and also know the Managerial team well. Of course, we are going into the game as underdogs and rightly so, but we will go there confident that we can do ourselves justice. All of the pressure is on Chester and we can just go out and enjoy ourselves on the pitch. The lads will enjoy the stadium and atmosphere and I know the supporters will also enjoy the big match atmosphere. But before that we have got three crucial league games starting tonight with Whitchurch Alport. We have to get focused on each of these challenges individually as the League is our Bread and Butter and we don’t want any slip ups at this stage of the season. So welcome to everyone from Whitchurch. I know the two clubs have always had friendly relations and two great sets of fans, so we are looking forward to the game tonight and working on another three points.

The Runcorn Town game was pleasing because they were unbeaten and sitting proudly at the top of the league beforehand, but we knew that if we played to anything approaching our potential we could win and after a bit of a slow start by us, we certainly took control of the game, took most of our chances when they came and went on and dominated proceedings. We of course followed that up with another good win away at Glossop, who are a big, strong physical side from a division above and I felt that we deserved to win both matches against them. Had we taken our chances it would have been game over in the home tie and the away tie wouldn’t have needed extra time, but the lads deserve all of the credit for displaying another side to the game, by battling away for 120 minutes and having the mentality to see it through quite comfortably. That led us into the next round away at inform Squires Gate last Saturday and the lads put on a great performance to comfortably see the game won with a 5-1 victory. It was great for Craig Cairns to get his three (or was it four?) goals and take a bit of the pressure of himself – that he puts on himself I should

whitchurch Whitchurch Alport begin the 2018-19 season competing at the highest level in the club’s 72 year history. Mays thrilling play off final victory over Cammell Lairds in front of a record 733 crowd at Yockings Park sent Alport to the top flight after just three seasons as an NWCFL club. Formed in 1946, WAFC took its name from the nearby Alport Farm which was the home of local footballer, Coley Maddox, who lost his life during WWII. Alport started out in the Shrewsbury & District League, winning the title two years after their formation, before becoming one of the founder members of the Mid Cheshire League in 1948. Alport went on to enjoy some success in the 50’s and 60’s, reaching numerous Cup finals – one of which saw the club contest the Welsh Amateur Cup Final against Chirk AAA in front of 5,000 spectators at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground. Arguably their finest hour though, came in the 1969-70 campaign when Whitchurch became the first side to take the League Championship outside of Cheshire. They also won the Shropshire County Cup but in pursuit of the treble, Kidsgrove Athletic denied them of unrivalled success with Whitchurch beaten 4-2 in the League Cup Final. Still, it didn’t stop the town’s Council from honouring the club with a Civic reception acknowledging the team’s outstanding achievements. Season 1973/74 saw the club achieve arguably its highest honour to date by defeating Cardiff College 2-1 to become the first English side ever to win the Welsh Amateur Cup under the stewardship of the late Eddie Morris. But a decade later and Alport were in decline. A disastrous decision to field only local players resulted in back-to-back bottom place finishes with barely a handful of wins across two successive campaigns. In 2009, Alport won the Shropshire County Cup at Shrewsbury Town’s stadium with a 1-0

win over Wellington Amateurs. But just four years later, the Reds resigned from the Cheshire League just a few short weeks before the campaign began, and there was a question mark against the club’s future. They survived – just - and took the decision to play in the Mercian Premier Division, but it was far from plain sailing from there. After a couple of seasons in the Mercian, there was an even bigger decision to be made: Alport had seen an opportunity to apply for North West Counties League status. Originally, their application to join NWCFL was declined but an appeal was successfully heard at Wembley Stadium - with the FA’s appeals committee overturning the original decision. And in August 2015, Whitchurch finally stepped onto the field to compete at the highest level in their history, earning a 1-1 home draw with Rochdale Town in front of a crowd of 83, with Luke Woollam becoming the first player to score for the club as a NWCFL outfit. Initially, the Reds began brightly, losing only five of their first 15 league games. But a harsh winter saw interest wane and many of the better players decided they’d had enough. Alport limped over the line simply to complete their league fixtures, but a miserly 16 points from 34 league matches told its own story. On May 27th 2016, the club unveiled a joint management team of Luke Goddard and Carl Everall. They set about assembling a brand new youthful and energetic team & WAFC were beaten semi-finalists in the play-offs earning the right to compete in the FA Cup. Over 100 fans followed the club to Walsall where they lost 3-1.

smile, but I know he loves scoring goals so it might cheer him up! Back in the league tonight and we simply just need to keep winning. Three points is all that matters tonight. Big thanks to the fans the support has been unreal, to travel in the numbers to Glossop away on a Tuesday was fantastic an it really helped us grind the win out.

The lads are flying at the moment and we believe we can beat anyone who is in front of us, but we have to go with the same attitude every game and make sure our standards don’t slip now. The front players are in great form and it’s good that they are all chipping in with the goals. The rug rats John Mc an the purple messi are absolutely flying and you can see how confident they both are, and they are a pleasure to play with. Cairnsy is back in the goals after the Squires gate game, there is a bit of a debate whether he scored 3 or 4 but I’ll give him the 4 as it might make him smile, not much makes him

Retired Residents set to improve their skills and leave lasting legacies Residents of a Regenda Homes Independent Living scheme in Liverpool are set to use their past to improve their computer skills in the present, thanks to a £10,000 National Lottery Grant. The money will be used to improve the IT facilities at St Peter’s Court in Aigburth and pay for an oral and local history project, which aims to allow over 20 residents to document their own life stories, leaving a lasting legacy for their families.

Dr Paul Otterson and Colin Robinson, lecturers at Liverpool John Moores University, will deliver the programme, concentrating first on IT skills and then on the history project. Dr Paul Otterson said: “There is lots of evidence that people learn new skills more efficiently when the task is relevant and meaningful to them. This is particularly so in the case of IT and so this project is a great way to help older residents improve their IT proficiency. If you would like to get involved in the project visit www.regenda.org.uk for further information.

The project takes its inspiration from the work of New York Times bestselling author and education expert, Sir Ken Robinson, whose younger brother John is a resident at St Peter’s Court.

With the ongoing success of our football for everyone project and our brand-new walking football initiative we are starting to put the wheels in motion for our next scheme, Kits4Kids, a scheme which aims to provide children in the local area with the equipment and kit needed to participate in football. Families are struggling to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head never mind forking out £40/£50 for a pair of boots every year plus shin pads, kit etc, if you have more than one child you’re suddenly looking at spending a few hundred pounds, and that’s before any subs need paying. An analysis by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reveals cuts to benefits and tax credits under the Tory government will see children hardest hit, forecasting that around one and a half million more under-18s will live in households below the relative poverty line by 2022. The research, which analyses the

impact of welfare reforms between 2010 and 2018, shows households with lone parents and children are set to lose an average of £5,250 – almost one-fifth of their total net income, compared to a loss of £3,000 for couples with children. This will see the child poverty rate for those in lone parent households increase from 37 per cent to over 62 per cent. These children are of great risk of being isolated and abandoned socially. The life skills learned through football help empower individuals and enhance mental wellbeing, such as increased resiliency, self-esteem and connections with others. These features of football are beneficial to people of all ages, but they are especially vital to the healthy development of young people. We must do more to increase engagement and encourage young people into football, not stand by while they are priced out of the game through no fault of their own. This is where the fantastic City of Liverpool FC Supporters come in! If there are any old kits, boots or shin pads that your son/ daughter has grown out of then please do not hesitate to contact us and we can arrange a collection or drop them off at one of the home games where one of our Community team will collect them from you.
