With the railway open throughout between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth again, a full season of special events is again on the calendar.

The first event in 2009 is the annual ‘1960s Transport Day’. There will be over 150 classic cars, lorries, motorcycles and a bus at various stations along the line. Names which are long-gone stir the memory – names like the Vauxhall Victor, Sunbeam Alpine, Triumph Herald and Hillman Imp. Commercials are represented by names like Bedford, Austin and Wolverhampton-based lorry builders, Guy. The 1960s era is reflected by the trains as well. Most trains are steam-hauled as usual, but they are supplemented by a 1960 built diesel railcar unit. There is a regular service over the whole line and the usual fare structure applies. There is no need to book – just turn up and pay on the day. 4

Two weekends in May see the return of that perennial children’s favourite ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’. He will be up to his usual tricks along with his many friends, all under the watchful eye of The Fat Controller. The last weekend of June and first weekend of July see the annual 1940s Weekends. Once described as “like a 16-mile long Hollywood film set”, this ever-popular event sees many visitors arriving in period clothes, some as civilians and others in a variety of military uniforms. There are re-enactments, military vehicles and displays, a recreation of a house interior from the period, airraid shelters and other period settings. There are special timetables and fares for these two events and advanced booking is recommended. This is best done on-line at www.svr.co.uk

The SVR brings the seaside to the West Midlands on the first weekend in September with ‘Seaside Special’. Back by popular demand, this event recreates a bygone era when everyone used the train to go on holiday. There are named trains like “Cambrian Coast Express”, shows by Punch & Judy, sticks of rock, buckets and spades and even a ‘beach’! It’s fun for all the family, just before the children go back to school too! December brings the annual visit by Santa. Advanced booking is required and further information will be available in September.

No journey on the Railway is complete without a visit to The Engine House, the Visitor & Education Centre at Highley. Housing eight steam locomotives and other rolling stock, it tells the story of the rail-way along the valley. Buffers Café Restaurant offers fine views over the Railway and along the valley from the balcony. A small supplement is payable. With trains running every weekend, and daily May 2 to October 4, plus all school holidays, it looks like another exciting year at the Severn Valley Railway.

Advertising with us

your

Local Times

Why do you need to advertise? Although your business may have loyal and regular customers as costs rise and your margins decrease we have to either bear these rises from our surplus revenue or put the price of our goods and services up. In time of recession it may be difficult to raise prices as this may drive away our loyal customers to other businesses, usually the large stores and supermarkets, who may offer better value for money. larger businesses need to attract more customers by offering better deals and very competitive pricing to keep pace with or attract a larger percentage of market share and they achieve this through aggressive campaigns of advertising using a variety of media, television, radio, magazine and newsprint, promotions and vouchers all to entice the potential customers through their doors to spend money and keep them coming back. Small businesses also need to entice customers to use their stores and services but most advertising is prohibitively expensive and often does not reach your core customers. You need to evaluate who your customers are. Are they young, elderly or retired, working throughout the day, local residents, tourists or other local businesses? You need to look at who is advertising from outside your local area and who will be enticing your customers to spend money with them. Building this picture will be important to any survival during this recession and using a cost effective advertising medium for the local area 24

starts with advertising in Your Local Times Magazine. Your Local Times offers a competitively priced advertisement in a glossy magazine delivered free to local households and businesses. Featuring businesses, the community, a page of quizzes, horoscope and words of wisdom about relationships, dieting, fitness, gardening, do it yourself, classic cars and local peoples hobbies - which if they make items and advertise in the magazine, may turn into money makers! Local isn’t for my business. Your Local Times offers all its advertisers an on-line version absolutely free and if you already have a web site the reader can link to it without the need to browse. No signing up to join . No fees. No hassle to read and all the back issues of the magazine are on the web site for a year so your advertisement is on the web for anyone to see. How much does all this cost? From £15 for a sixteenth page advert to a full page at £175 your business goes from local to global for the price of one advertisement and all the features of the magazine are on-line too! Show me any other adversing medium which offers this at such a competitive price. Go online at www.yourlocaltimes.co.uk and see this month’s magazine. Then call to advertise on

Your future in the stars… ARIES Mar 21st - Apr 20th From the 3rd, Venus works its way through your sign Aries but the big plus is the angle this forges with both Mars and Jupiter, from the 10th. This can be very enabling for you and can do much for your social and romantic prospects. However, if one person seems to perfectly meet your needs stay grounded, until you’re really sure this can be lasting.

LEO Jul 24th - Aug 23rd This can be a phenomenal month for relationships, as Venus and Mars coexist with the bouncy vibes of Jupiter. You can be the charmer of the zodiac and your charismatic aura can see you irresistible. At work, partnerships are blessed, but the key is learning to trust and fending off any need you may have to control the involvement. Look to power-share!

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23rd - Dec 21st When something enthuses, you’re hardly backwards in coming forwards and a new thread can galvanise you. Often you have an avid appreciation of new information, and you can be sponge like, soaking up lots of data. If you’re technical, or enjoy writing, time spent on your own blog or personal page of a networking site can be particularly fun.

TAURUS Apr 21st - May 21st You have the unique trick of being imaginative yet sensible. These qualities can hold you in good stead because you can find yourself interfacing with those in the know. Pure inspiration is unlikely to sway such decision makers. Fortunately, you can show some good old fashioned ambition. Discreet conversations and interviews can prove crucial.

VIRGO Aug 24th - Sep 23rd When it comes to your fitness regime, you can defy the doubters and continue to show a real desire to get yourself in shape. Then again, it can be you helping someone else to be more virtuous. If you work in the service sector, a “can do” attitude can win the respect and appreciation of your peers and bosses alike. Just don’t expect instant feedback Virgo.

CAPRICORN Dec 22nd - Jan 20th That diet plan can be under direct attack as Mars and Jupiter hang out together from the 10th. Just about anything tasty can challenge your sticking power. However, if you’re keen to marshal your finances more astutely, this planetary link and the role of Venus can give you the drive to improve your lot. A new job can also do wonders for your self-esteem.

GEMINI May 22nd - Jun 21st A change of scenery could do wonders for you this month, but if it’s not possible to achieve this that doesn’t mean that you won’t be curious and any kind of new interest, especially those with a historical or philosophical bent, can get your senses bubbling. If you do venture further afield, the companionship of one special friend can be important.

LIBRA Sep 24th - Oct 23rd February can be the month to provide the impetus for lots of your hopes. The chances are that you can be awesomely motivated and this can be a sensational month for your love life. However, the Eclipse on the 9th asks you to match inspiration with keeping one toe on the ground. Yet the chances are you will be soaring higher and higher Libra.

AQUARIUS Jan 21st - Feb 19th The Eclipse of the 9th might be depleting, but perhaps only if you’re overly idealistic. Fortunately, as far as neat energy is concerned, yours can just get stronger and stronger. In fact your challenge is going to be how you channel this productively. Avoid starting lots of new strands, narrow your focus on less and then more rewards will follow Aquarius.

CANCER Jun 22nd - Jul 23rd Finances may or may not be an immediate concern to you, but you can be highly motivated to better your lot. If you’re applying for a new job your enthusiasm can be high, but if you have an instinct for running your own enterprise, few times would be as good as this for you to purposefully power forwards. In love, a raunchy time is possible.

26

SCORPIO Oct 24th - Nov 22nd Your idea of the perfect home and family life may vary from another Scorpio’s. However, whatever onus you put on things can now be amplified. If you’re someone who likes to be warm and cosy, the desire to achieve this can be greater. If you like to be industrious, DIY projects can capture your imagination. Happy news can also be announced.

PISCES Feb 20th - Mar 20th Fact can seem stranger than fiction, but it’s the things going on at a more psychological level which can be so powerful. This can be especially true around your connections to others, with some links strengthening and others loosening. Positively, as you become more self-assured your cash-flow can show real signs of changing for the better.
