Welcome… Since starting to edit this magazine, I have met some very interesting and colourful people. Although disappointed with the Forties Day on the Severn Valley, I did meet a couple at Bridgnorth station dressed in appropriate costume, who were getting married in a Forties ceremony on the following Friday. A couple whose enthusiasm for their hobby had spilled over into their everyday life - how happy they looked embarking upon this new venture together! We are introducing a new section to the magazine, which I hope

OctoberFest 2009 It is that time of year again to remind you that all the festival fringe events throughout the month of October will be summarized as OctoberFest. Last year 8000 flyers were distributed throughout the Wyre Forest and beyond and many said that they were surprised how much is going on in the town. There is always great music in the pubs around the town and last year’s blues event at the Packhorse was a welcome addition. However, the one area missing is comedy. This year we are ahead of ourselves as a number of people have already told us about their plans including a Performance Poet, a Cricket Dinner
at the Royal Foresters, a Petanque competition, an Art Exhibition at the Quay Gallery, Creative Writing at the Museum, Apple pressing & Cider festival, and a French Market & Pumpkin festival at the end of the month. So get your thinking caps on and let us know what you are planning so that your event can be included in this year’s flyer. The 1940’s weekend at Severn Valley Every year I make the same mistake by travelling from Bewdley straight through to Bridgnorth and arriving at noon ready to watch Paul Harper and Lola Lamar performing a rendition of songs from the forties. As the train waiting in the station started to pull out on its way back to Kidderminster I then realised that I would miss the battle re-enactment at Highley as the next train is at 2pm. This year at Bridgnorth there were very few costumed “performers” and the music was surprisingly subdued with no George Formby or forces related songs which have been performed in previous years.
Perhaps the recession in the economy or maybe the loss of the Military Vehicle Trust and all the re-enactors had taken its toll on the event for that first weekend. The people I spoke to were certainly enjoying themselves especially the happy couple who were getting married the following Friday in their forty’s costumes. I may drive to each station next year so as I don’t miss the re-enactment. Contribution by Alan Layman
Help For Heroes On the night of Saturday 18th July, at The Victory Club, Fazeley, Tamworth, Staffs a charity disco and raffle took place to raise funds for the worthwhile and popular charity Help For Heroes.
Organised by Debbie and Paul Mason, whose son Luke is a Lance Corporal in the Mercian Regiment, the aim was to raise a figure of £500 to help treat and rehabilitate the men and women of our Armed Forces who are injured while serving our country. Through admission charges and enthusiastic raffle ticket sales, both up to and during the event, by the end of the evening the fantastic sum of £1069 had been raised! Thanks to local restaurants, businesses and individuals who donated prizes such as gym memberships, signed premiership football shirts, go-karting and paint-balling days, the raffle was an exciting and highly successful part of the evening.

on the night, from the very young to the very not-soyoung enjoyed a brilliant evening of dancing and fun, all for a fantastic cause. 89 year old in training to support the Millbrook Suite Appeal One of Bewdley’s eldest residents is in training to climb Snowdon in support of the Millbrook Suite Appeal. Mr. Alan Birch, who is due to be 90 years old later this year, is aiming to climb Snowdon on 26th August. He has done this before and is walking regularly long distances to keep fit. He is hoping the money raised will buy a much needed Hair Loss Prevention system which reduces or prevents the terrible hair loss of people having chemotherapy.

Kidderminster Horticultural Society 2009 Country Fair and Horticultural Show to be opened by Christine Walkden
Our two day Country Fair and Horticultural Show will be held in the grounds of the Ramada hotel on the B4190 Habberley Road between Kidderminster & Bewdley (just past the main Hotel entrance going towards Bewdley) on Saturday and Sunday the 12th and 13th of September and will feature the following events. The two day show will be open from 10 am to 5.30 pm on Saturday and from 10 AM to 5 PM on Sunday. This is our 55th show and it will be bigger and much improved from previous years. The show will be opened at 12 noon on Saturday. The show will, as usual, be a traditional floral, fruit, vegetable, wine and craft show with prizes awarded by a panel of judges. This year there will also be a craft fair of about 20 different stalls and will have displays of cars and a display of old agricultural tools. Other stalls include garden furniture, arctic spas, pottery, garden ornaments, walking stick carving, a medieval
display, children’s Victorian roundabout, and many other countryside type stalls. We will also have a plant sale, raffle, gardener’s question time, floral art and cookery demonstrations, dog agility show, 1940s fire engine with turntable ladder and an ambulance from the Quatermass film. Rob Phillips will have his caravan of model cars and there will be some military vehicles. There will be the Wyre Forest re-cycling team and the Wyre Forest dog rescue team. Reasonably priced lunches, sandwiches & other refreshments including homemade cakes will be on sale all day. Steeped in history Ombersely, which has been associated as a destination for fine dining has a butchers and delicatessen and is visited by locals and tourists, boast a delightful pub, which in itself dates back to the 1830s. From the front it looks charming and quaint but inside is deceptively spacious. Off road parking is to the rear of the property. Its patrons Valerie Chambers and Vince James, who have been associated with the industry for over thirty years, have owned The Cross Keys Inn for ten years and in that time developed a restaurant, which could rival any Michelin starred establishment. On arrival your host ushers you to a very comfortable waiting area with plush arm chairs and settee or tables and chairs where drinks are served while you peruse the menu at your leisure. From the A la Carte menu you have a choice of starters, main course and a selection of tempting sweets. Of course the freshly prepared meals are from produce grown locally and your meal is prepared and cooked to your palette, including any dietary requirements, by a team of five experienced chefs and therefore arrives at your table piping hot. There is care, quality and presentation, which set it aside from other establishments, where enthusiasm and direction comes from the owners who run a wellorganised team. The dining area is within a newly constructed conservatory, which is tastefully decorated and is awash with light and the matching tables and very comfortable chairs add a contempory feel. The table with the snow white starched tablecloth and napkins is a canvas for polished cutlery and glasses with a side basket of freshly baked bread rolls for you to enjoy whilst waiting for your meal to arrive. Service is friendly and attentive, presentation of starters and main course dishes adds eye appeal to expertly cooked food. A good choice of wine can be selected from the reasonably priced wine list. 22
No time limit is set for the table to be vacated, which is just as well as a pause is recommended to allow time to make room for that rather special home made dessert you have always promised yourself. It is advisable to make a reservation for the A la Carte restaurant to avoid disappointment. As well as the A la Carte dining room, tables are arranged in the lounge bar and meals are served from the extensive menu and fresh fish selection which is displayed on the boards at the bar. As with the A La Carte restaurant all bar meals are freshly cooked to order ensuring a high standard of cuisine. A traditional part of this pub with its open fireplace and oak beamed ceilings longs for the winter nights when the fire crackles to the burning logs and the menu turns to winter warmers. The bar serves a variety of Real and Traditional Ales including Timothy Taylor Landlord and Hobson’s as well as the usual spirits and selection of award winning wines or indulge yourself in the after-dinner coffee and liqueurs. You will always be shown a warm welcome by such friendly staff and owners that you wish you had found this place sooner.

“Summer Nights” Throughout August for West Midland Safari Park West Midland Safari Park will be open late every evening throughout August for their “SUMMER NIGHTS” event, following a successful month long trial last year. This is a marvelous opportunity to visit West Midland Safari Park during the long school holidays, when visitors will have the chance to go on an amazing four mile evening safari and see some brilliant animals from Cheetah to Tigers and Elephants to Giraffe! There are plenty of baby animals around too – see how many you can spot! There’s also the chance to visit the Discovery Trail, with its great all weather facilities which include Seal Island; Creepy Crawlies Seaquarium; Twilight Cave and Mark O’Shea’s Reptile World that incorporates the Record Breakers Exhibit – come face to face with some of the deadliest, largest, heaviest and longest snakes and reptiles from around the globe. There’s a Sealion Show too, performed each evening from the Sealion Theatre arena. West Midland Safari Park has a stunning collection of 1700 animal encounters, as well as an Amusement Area that will be open late with a variety of rides available, which include VENOM, BLACK FLY, ZAMBEZI WATER SPLASH, RIVER RAFTING AND TWISTER.

Summer Nights starts on Saturday, 1st August 2009 and continues right up until Sunday 30th August 2009 and has been introduced to coincide with the annual main holiday period. The Park opens at 10.00am, last admission to the Park and animal reserves is at 7.00pm and amusement rides stay open until 9.00pm. Admission costs £11.50 for adults, £10.50 for children. A new family saver ticket has been introduced for 2009 costing £40.00 admitting two adults and two children. Admission costs also include a free return ticket. The Kitchen Garden From the middle of the month begin to sow spring cabbage for winter harvest. Keep seeds moist and occasionally dust with lime. After about six weeks plants should be ready for transplanting to your prepared plot and water regularly. Winter lettuce can also be sown until October although late sowing must be protected from cold weather. After the Aphid problems at Whitlenge we are now battling the slugs. We have a new range of toad houses in the gift shop so will be positioning these on the vegetable patch and by the Hostas and hope the toads are hungry. Autumn feed can be applied now to promote root growth and toughen up the grass for the winter. Cut herbs and dry in bunches, hanging upside down in an airy room. Pot up some mint, lemon balm and chives for the window sill to see you through the Autumn and winter. Prune Summer flowering shrubs Shrubs, like Deutzia, Philadelphus and Weigela, indeed those which have flowered during the months of June, July and the beginning of August may be pruned now or as soon as they have finished flowering. Shorten any exceptionally long shoots above a bud to give a tidy appearance to the shrub, then remove about one third of the oldest stems. The main purpose of pruning is one of renewal, to encourage a constant supply of new shoots - to prevent the shrub from becoming crowded with old dead wood. Now should be the time to prune Rambler Roses-that is, when they have finished flowering. Prune the stems that have flowered to ground level. Train and tie the new shoots so as they develop. Feed and mulch following pruning to feed the plant. Semi Ripe Cuttings New shoots on plants are ideal to take as cutting material during August and September. Choose sturdy, half mature side shoots, no larger than necessary and make a straight cut immediately below a joint, remove any leaves from the lower half and dip into rooting powder before inserting around the edge of your pot of compost. Firm in place and water gently and place in a frost free environment till after winter
