Welcome… The events and attractions in Bewdley are in full swing now that the summer has arrived and I hope the weather will be kind to the tourists who visit. I have been to a couple of the National Garden open days including Little Larford last month and will be going there this month for ‘Lily Time’ on the 19th of July. I hope the gardening calendar supplied by Whitlenge Gardens of Hartlebury was a help to all you budding gardeners and we will be updating this every month. My passion for classic cars and steam trains has overtaken me this month and as the Le-Mans 24 hour race was on in June I decided to put the photograph of a 1953 Jaguar C-type on the front cover. I shall no doubt be attending the Severn Valley 1940’s weekends where more photographs will be taken of the enthusiasts who dress up for this great event. Bewdley should be proud of its tourist attractions and I will be charting the history of the Severn Valley Railway in future issues. I have received many emails of support for the magazine and will publish as many letters about your events and local issues as I can. I would like to welcome Matt Allsopp, who has lived in Bewdley for many years, to my team as Sales Manager. Distribution is now improving and many more residents and businesses are now receiving the magazine. I shall be updating the web site over the next few months to make it more interactive for both the advertisers and the readers, which will be very exciting. Cricket in Bewdley Forget the twenty twenty games with overpaid primadonas of international cricket and look at the local Bewdley six a side competition between the pubs and clubs.

Whether you are a cricket fan or not it doesn’t matter. Just enjoy the day. Programmes are available on the day with raffle prizes and starts at 10 am and the final is at 6 pm.

Twelve teams compete for the ‘bragging’ rights to be the champion for twelve months when the ritual will begin all over again. The annual event takes place at the town’s cricket club situated at the end of High Street and is part of Bewdley’s social calendar. There is something for all to enjoy with a pig roast, bouncy castle and face painting for the children, wet sponge and egg throwing and catching competitions to become Bewdley Champions. You are welcome to bring your barbecue or picnic so let’s hope the sun shines on this great occasion.

Bewdley Regatta As one of the largest inland river regattas in the country, Bewdley Rowing Club’s Annual 2 Day Regatta is the showcase event for the club. Attracting over five hundred competitors and many more coaches and spectators from about 40 clubs across the UK, Bewdley Regatta weekend is a major event for the town, and this year will be no exception. The event will take place on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th July and the club is expecting an even higher turnout this year due to the success they had last year. Crews of all ages and experience will compete against crews of similar status to win a much coveted Bewdley Rowing Club pewter tankard or ‘pot’ as they are referred to. Each day the racing will start shortly after 8am and continue right through the day until about 6pm often with over 300 crews each day battling it out for the prize. Traditionally Saturday’s course is 800 meters long, with Sunday being called the Sprint Regatta over a shorter 600 meter course and this year will be no exception. Although there are many regattas held at other clubs throughout the year, the combination of timing – the Bewdley event runs shortly after all the major national events have be held – the locality of the town, and the friendly atmosphere of the club all ensure that Bewdley’s

regatta is a fixed event in many rowers calendars for being as competitive as it is enjoyable. Many rowers camp for the weekend staying to enjoy the Club’s own disco held on the Saturday night, as well as the many pubs and restaurants in the town. However it’s not only the competitors who look forward to Bewdley Regatta each year as the many spectators who come with the competitors or from the local area are able to have some of the best views available at any regatta. Naturally the club and pubs running along the side of the river are a focal point for many, but there are many who prefer to picnic along the grassy river banks making it a family day out. There are also opportunities for business and individuals to sponsor races which allows access to the Sponsor’s enclosure where complimentary refreshments and food are served throughout the day for the sponsors and their guests. Sponsorship is not very expensive and can make a gteat day out very special indeed. The Groom It is the Bride’s big day with the mother of the bride and her consorts directing the well-choreographed event in order that her daughter has a memorable day. But what is the role of the groom? Rumour has it that he is ‘just supposed to turn up’ for this happy day but the planning stage has been underway long before the parents were dutifully informed of the impending event. You have asked the girl of your dreams to marry you and she has said yes, so you now investigate how much it is all going to cost. Traditionally the Bride’s father pays for most of the wedding, however more couples like to take control of the wedding plans and receive a contribution towards the cost by both parents. The Bride’s father will still expect to pay for a large percent of the wedding but before you start arranging what you want it is a good idea to sit down and work out what you can afford. If you are funding this yourself then remember it should be the best day of your lives, however, there are other days afterwards and you need money to live on, so budget wisely and don’t over commit. If you are getting contributions then you must settle on a figure, some parents decide to pay for a specific part of the wedding. The financial part of the wedding usually causes the most stress and tension between families than any other part, that’s why budgeting is so important.   Now we have got that out of the way the next thing is to is decide the date and venues, having said that it’s not that easy. First you have to choose what type of ceremony and where you want it then you will have to find out what dates are available. The chances are if you go for a weekday you are more likely to book the venue you want and be closer to your original date that you had planned for your wedding. Also tying in a venue for your reception should be easier and this also could save your budget as midweek or out of season booking should be slightly cheaper as most venues will be happy to take the additional booking midweek. The main drawback would be with guests having organize a weekday wedding. If you decide on a weekend wedding then book early, as this will give you more choice. Another possible argument waiting to happen is the guest list. Depending on who’s paying, and also your budget, will decide roughly how many guests you can invite. There needs to be an even balance between both parties. As a rough guide immediate family down to cousins are usually placed straight on the list then most parents have friends of the family who they must invite and then there are joint friends of the couple and close friends of the bride and close friends of the grooms, then you can also add work colleges and additional acquaintances to the end of the list depending on the budget. Break the list down to

who attends the service, this usually goes down to family and close friends and work colleges. The main reception depends on budget, however as a guide this would be family and close friends followed by an informal reception in the evening for all the rest of your friends and colleges to come along. Some couples decide to have one reception in the form of a stand up buffet; this usually brings the price down per head so that they can invite more people. Choosing the Best Man, in theory should be easy; you choose your brother or your closest friend, tell them to write a witty speech and that’s that, however there’s more to being a Best Man as there is quite a bit of responsibility and you will need someone who is level headed to take on the role. The best man is usually involved right from the start as this ensures that someone else knows what is supposed to be happening. He will also liaise with the ushers in organizing their roles and arranging who is available for the rehearsals, choosing your outfits and the collection of them, if hired. On the day itself he will be on hand to make sure you are ready and will try to keep you calm, although he is more than likely to be as nervous as you. If you are going on honeymoon he will take charge of your luggage and passports and should have the ring somewhere safe. His main responsibility is to get you to the service on time, early if possible and will now dart around making sure all the ushers are there and all is running smoothly then back at your side as the bride appears. After the ceremony he will make his way to the reception ahead of you to make sure everything is ready for your arrival. He will then attend to his duties during the reception including the traditional witty speech and lastly make sure you leave on time. The stag night is organized by the best man however it is a good idea to have some form of input, but consider having it a few days before the wedding as you need to turn up looking like the man your fiancée fell in love with when you first met. Well, all that’s left is to choose your outfit, the rings and book your honeymoon destination. Another pint landlord, please!

Riverside Children’s Centre The new Riverside Children’s Centre is located in Stourport Road, Bewdley (next to the new site for Bewdley Primary School). Our centre offers free activities for families with under-5s living in and around Bewdley; please see programme attached above. We also take activities into existing preschool settings and run groups in community centres across our catchment area.

We are expanding our programme and would like to invite new volunteers to help us with admin and/or family activities. Becoming a Barnardo’s Volunteer offers an opportunity to undertake work experience and receive Barnardo’s Induction; training and ongoing support that will contribute to the individual’s CV and all volunteers will become valued members of our team, sharing our achievements.

Le Mans and Glory for Jaguar In the 1950’s Jaguar was still a new and small company in global terms and most of its racing credentials had come from privateer racers who owned and raced Jaguars. Success with the Jaguar XK 120 Roadster in racing was now being overtaken by the continental racing cars with their streamlined bodywork and backing from the larger motor manufacturers. It was clear the XK 120 was now obsolete and William Lyons and chief engineer Bill Haynes embarked on the crusade for the Jaguar Company to win the Le Mans twentyfour hour race and capitalise on its worldwide publicity. In secret and using its close-knit loyal staff of engineers it came up with the winning formula of the Jaguar XK 120 C. Its slippery sleek aluminium crafted bodywork over a steel tubular chassis frame used the same engine as the XK 120. The suspension, although modified, still used the fashionable torsion bars and the drum brakes. Its two seats were wedged between the side frames of the chassis and the prop shaft tunnel categorised it as a sports racing car.

Improvements were made to the XK 120 engine with its 3/8 inch lift cam shafts, 8-to-1 Aerolite pistons which on test produced 184bhp at 5500rpm. Staggering to think today the average family saloon car produces this and the average sports car is in excess of 250 bhp but in the race for titles bhp counted. Tyres of 600x16 inch buffed R1 racing tyres, which were supplied by Dunlop, were set to a pressure of 55lbs per square inch. Incredible how a company with limited resources could achieve the accolade of winning the Le-Mans 24 hour race not only in 1951 but in 1953 where the first three cars home were all Jaguar C-types. Jaguar went on to produce for the public the C-type after its famous victory when a total of 54 cars, including the factory cars, were produced. No wonder enthusiasts wanted these cars and now the price is beyond the average person’s reach. An original car at auction would sell today for more than a million pounds, which is why, in the 1980’s, a few enthusiasts built replicas of the 1953 racing cars. With the introduction of disc brakes and the 3.8 litre engines, companies succeeded in producing a replica mainly from original parts of the XK 120 Roadster and drop head vehicles which were being broken for spares. Little did we know these would become icons to be collected and preserved. Many replicas bore the distinction of a kit car with the fibreglass body and the modern mechanics from the Jaguar XJ saloons but the few purists who crafted a true replica can be proud of the heritage they have left.

JULY A snip in time prolongs your flowering period. Roses, sweetpeas, lupins and all herbaceous plants will flower again for you if you deadhead now. It’s a good time to prune hedging and we will be cutting back our pyracantha hedge after flowering to keep full thick growth. We will also lightly trim the lavenders as the flowers fade, not into the old wood otherwise they will not regrow.

We will be feeding all our pots and bedding as any nutrients in their original compost will have been exhausted by now, so weekly feeds with a high potash liquid fertiliser are recommended.

We need more fresh herbs for our tea room so are planting in all sorts of pots and containers. We are even using a pair of Frans old wellies. These will all be put right by the door for frequent picking. You can still sow salad crops now - beetroot, endive, salad leaves, lettuce, radish and Chinese cabbage for continuous picking through to autumn. Also winter spinach and spring cabbage (Keith’s favourite). We must remember to check on our fruit trees this year and thin out the apples. Last year a bumper crop weighed down and broke some of the branches. We will thin out congested clusters of fruit over the next few weeks. Those remaining should be about 10cm apart. Our excess cherries, raspberries and strawberries all go into our Rumptopff (that’s a large jar to which you just add sugar and vodka, then let steep till Christmas). Pop round in December and try some! This year is a bad year for aphids at Whitlenge. We try not to use pesticide as bees feed of aphid honeydew and they have enough problems already. So we are trying to encourage more hover flies to eat the aphids. They apparently love all yellow plants and Achillea, Limnanthes douglasii (poached egg plant), Statice, Californian poppies, Chamomile and Alyssum. Another good excuse to plant more flowers!
