A New Dawnâ&#x20AC;Ś Looking back over the last eighteen months since this magazine was first published, Bewdley has had its fair share of upheaval with the ongoing roadworks and enduring the worst recession for over ten years. Most businesses have weathered the storm and survive today to build a new and enlivened town, which this historic place deserves, to attract the new visitors and those who regularly enjoy coming here. New businesses have opened putting their faith in the town knowing that it, and the surrounding countryside has a great deal to offer. As a business community we all need to work together in making sure the tourists get the best possible service to ensure their stay has been enjoyable so they return time and time again, not forgetting the residents who deserve the convenience of shopping locally. I am sure the town council and the development trust are endeavouring to improve the amenities, and the regions exposure, to ensure Bewdley has its fair share of visitors but it requires the business community to take part.

The Big Fish Angler Extraordinaire

Tench have been voted the most popular fish with coarse anglers around the country and I agree for this summer species not only fights well, looks beautiful but also lives in some of the most delightful venues around our countryside. Sadly tench venues are getting rarer by the year as carp fishing takes over the coarse fishing world and the problem is when a water is stocked with big carp they tend to dominate the water and its larder and the poor old tench suffers. Luckily for us around these parts we have surely one of the best tench lakes in the whole of the country and that’s the Kinver Freeliners run water at Dunmaston Hall near Bridgnorth. This water sits in the gorgeous grounds of the Dunmaston Estate overlooked by the halls magnificent boathouse. The water is surrounded by Reedmace and yellow iris and in the margins are beds of lilies, the perfect tench water. I am lucky enough to be a member of this local angling club that have the fishing rights to the lake and every year I have a few visits there in search of its tench

population. This year my first visit was the first weekend of the new fishing season and after baiting up with about five kilos of red spicy groundbait laced with sweetcorn I sat down to enjoy a great session. I was fishing with my old mate Lol Breakespear the well known specialist angler from Telford and we ended up having over twenty tench some we landed some we lost and by 11.00am we had had our fill! Mind you we had started at 4.00am as dawn broke and had bites straight from the off so at our age we could be excused for being tired! We caught all the fish using sweetcorn dyed red and flavoured with SBS Strawberry Jam flavour and they loved it! The bait was fished in conjunction with a Crystal Waggler Float although Lol used a Peacock Float older than him which only goes to prove it doesn’t have to be ultra modern gear to catch fish. There is something magical about watching a float in amongst the “needle” bubbles of feeding tench. First the float lifts then slowly sinks from view and on the strike the solid resistance of a tench is felt and for the next five minutes it’s like being pulled around by a Porsche 911S turbo sports car! Those big paddles and heavy tail fin gives the fish an incredible amount of power and over a short distance a very quick turn of speed. Many an angler beginner or expert has lost a tench on its first run I lost a few the other day that’s for sure. But that’s part of the attraction of tench fishing you are fishing in a situation you are not guaranteed to land the fish but that’s tench fishing and long may it be like that. Far Forest pupils hope for Bewdley in Bloom success Far Forest Lea Memorial CE Primary School pupils are preparing for this year’s Bewdley in Bloom competition taking place on the 16th and 17th July. Children from every class had the opportunity to don gloves and get planting. Organised and supported by the school’s PTA, the plants now look amazing, dotted throughout the school’s grounds.

Headteacher, Mrs Tara Collins-Bullock, stated: “Can I just thank everyone for helping make entering Bewdley in Bloom such a successful fun event for the children. They thoroughly enjoyed deciding where the plants should go and working with children from different classes to create their own individual floral works of art.” Before planting began, grandparent, Mrs Sandra Edwards, spent time at the school speaking to the children about different plants and discussing with them their planting plan of action. Mrs Collins-Bullock added: “Class teachers and pupils have each created their own watering rotas. Every class decided what type of garden they wished to make, even creating a beautiful butterfly garden, with gardens proudly displaying their own unique signs kindly created by parent Sid Jones, indicting which garden area of planting was done by which class.”

Philip D. Hawkins FGRA Artist and Author Philip D. Hawkins has been considered for many years to be Britain’s foremost railway artist. His paintings have been reproduced in many forms, including fine-art prints, calendars, greeting cards and collectors plates, as well as regularly in magazines and books. He was a founder member of the Guild of Railway Artists and the Guild’s President from 1988 until 1998, when he was made a Fellow of the Guild, only the third to be so honoured (following David Shepherd and the late Terence Cuneo). Two superb books based on his work have been published ‘Tracks On Canvas’ in 1998 (reprinted in 2001, 2005 & 2006) and ‘Steam On Canvas’ in 2005. Born and brought up in the West Midlands he attended the Birmingham College of Art and Design. He now lives and works in Devon. His beautifully evocative paintings not only capture the atmosphere of the railway but also represent its very essence. This ability to both appreciate the unique atmosphere and understand its workings emanates from a life-long love of steam locomotives and of railways in general, an interest developed during the artist’s formative years in the West Midlands during the 1950’s. The vast majority of the artists’ work is to commission for commercial concerns and private individuals. Ideas come in all shapes and sizes from the most brief of specifications to the most involved. Private commissions tend to be of a nostalgic nature, recreating a fond railway memory of a particular locomotive, train, location, occasion or a combination of all of these. Philip Hawkins will advise and offer any help required regarding reference to help recreate your fondest railway memories. Often a drawing will be prepared which helps convince both artist and client that the initial germ of an idea can be successfully developed into a dynamic work of art. 10

Hummingbird Cake Similar to carrot cake, Hummingbird cake contains bananas and pineapple to keep it moist and packed with flavour

Ingredients

300g caster sugar 3 eggs 300ml sunflower oil 270g peeled bananas, mashed 1 tsp cinnamon, plus extra to decorate 300g plain flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp vanilla extract 100g tinned pineapples, chopped into small pieces 100g chopped pecans, or walnuts plus extra to decorate Cream cheese frosting 600g icing sugar 100g unsalted butter, at room temperature 250g cream cheese, cold

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 170C/Gas 3. 2. Put the sugar, eggs, oil, banana and cinnamon in an electric mixer or use an handheld electric whisk and beat until all the ingredients are incorporated (donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry if the mixture looks slightly split at this stage). 3. Slowly add the flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt and vanilla extract and continue to beat until everything is well mixed. 4. Stir in the chopped pineapple and nuts by hand until evenly dispersed. 5. Line the based of three 20 cm cake tins with greaseproof paper. Pour the mixture into the tins and smooth over with a palatte knife. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and the sponge bounces back when touched. 4. Leave the cakes to cool slightly in the tins before turning out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely. 5. For the cream cheese frosting Beat the icing sugar and butter together using an electric mixer until the mixture comes together and is well mixed. 6. Add the cream cheese in one go and beat until completely incorporated. Turn the mixer up to medium-high speed continue beating until the mixture is light and fluffy at least 5 minutes.

7. Place one cake on a stand and spread about one-quarter of the cream cheese frosting over it with a palette knife. Place a second cake on top and and spread another quarter of the frosting over it. Top with the last cake and spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides. Finish with pecan nuts and a light sprinkling of cinnamon.

More than twenty years has been spent researching numbers 21 to 23 Load Street known collectively today as Bewdley Institute. Sue’s book is one of many written by the members of Bewdley Historical Research Group who work extremely hard to provide a picture of Bewdley’s past. Sue takes us on a journey through the 1700s when number 23 moved from being a bakery for twenty four years to become an inn in about 1734 and by 1788, the Wheatsheaf. It was one of two principal coaching inns in Bewdley at this time, the other being larger and longer established, namely the George. Sue describes coaching nationally and how Bewdley’s Wheatsheaf played its part. We are also given a taste of how dangerous travel by coach could be. Among the excerpts from the newspapers of the time, the Berrows Journal being one of them, are incidents involving highwaymen. The text is complimented by illustrations which include photos, sketches, press adverts and excerpts, coach timetables and journey prices.

It’s a knockout challenge raises £1,000 for Acorns charity Staff at Midlands supply chain specialist Oakland International have raised an amazing £1,000 for local charity Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust by taking part in a special It’s a Knockout event at Arrow Valley Park on Saturday 19th June. Team Oakland competed against 2 other teams from Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce and Clarke Roxburgh, with all 3 teams competing in 6 different events during the afternoon ranging from bombing the castle and Nordic skiing to a mini marathon. Winning 4 out of their 6 events, Team Oakland succeeded in gaining 120 points, making them the overall winner on the

day. Oakland Team captain, Hayley Smith, stated: “We had an absolutely fantastic time and although we were exhausted by the end, we’d definitely do it all again. I would like to thank our team members for taking part, and on their behalf of I would like to thank everyone who supported us on the day and for sponsoring us. We managed to raise an amazing £1,000 which we still can’t quite believe for Acorns Children’s Hospice which is a remarkable charity. Summer at Bewdley Museum A fun packed summer is on offer at Bewdley Museum. Wacky craft and art workshops, pottery, fun with fossils & dinosaurs, theatre, story telling and family fun days will keep the kids entertained through out the holidays. Ombersley Village The first recorded mention of the village was in 706 AD as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Ambreslegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; which is thought to mean a clearing in the forest where buntings nest, but it was probably inhabited long before that. Originally, the land at Ombersley was one of the many manors belonging to Evesham Abbey. The Parish also gave its name to an ancient forest, which had originally formed part of the great forest of Wyre, and the settlement grew in importance until it was large enough to need its own prison by 1203. The forest was grubbed up in 1229 under a charter of Henry III to make way for agriculture. The village has always been at an important crossroads. Originally, the roads were only packhorse routes, which were used to take goods to the most important transport routes of the time, which was the River Severn. The salt produced in Droitwich was a very important commodity and so the packhorses took it to the river at Holt to be transported deep into Wales. The iron and stone bridge at Holt Fleet which spans the River Severn was only constructed in May 1826. Many of the buildings in the core of the village are of 16th to 18th Century date. The village saw quite a bit of action during

the civil war era. Its crops and livestock looted and alehouses drunk dry by the Scottish Army (then supporting Cromwell and Parliament) as it passed through in 1645 on its way to Herefordshire. Six years later in August 1651, Ombersley was again the scene of a skirmish in the High Street. The Worcestershire Militia tried to slow down the advance of the Scottish Army (who now supported King Charles II) in order to buy time for the people of Worcester to prepare their defences. In the event, the people of Worcester decided to surrender, leading to the final battle of Worcester on 3rd September 1651. The Sandys family first became involved with the village when Edwin Sandys was chosen as the new Bishop of Worcester in 1559 and took the lease of Ombersley Manor as an additional home to the Bishops Palace at Hartlebury. Their Loyalty to King Charles II during the civil war era is commemorated in the name of the Crown & Sandys Hotel. Lady Sandys and the parish raised funds to build a new church of St Andrews in 1825. The Chancel of the original medieval church is still in the Churchyard and is used as a mausoleum for the Sandys family.

Not many people know that In 1086 there was a large fishery at Ombersley yielding 2,000 eels. In 1354, the Abbots of Evesham were granted the right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair in Ombersley. A cross once stood at the crossroads on the southern end of the village marking the market place. Doctor Johnson who visited Ombersley in 1774, stayed with Lord Sandys at Ombersley Court. He said, “We were treated with great civility.” Later, a friend of Dr Johnson’s, the Italian musician Gabriele Piozzi, wrote that he had heard Dr Johnson protest that he never had quite so much as he wished of wall fruit except once in his life “when we were all together at Ombersley”. The parish of Ombersley was once part of the ancient Wyre Forest. Around 1229, the area was deforested to make way for fields. In 1905, Ombersley contained 3,291 acres of arable land, 3,082 acres of permanent grass and 223 acres of woodland. A fact taken from Local history books record: “Agriculture is now the principal industry, but some women and girls were, in the middle of the 19th century, engaged in glovemaking and slopwork for Worcester tradesmen.”

Bewdley, Lord Sandys liked it so much he had it taken down, every part marked and recorded and transported by barge to Holt Fleet. It was transported by horse and cart from Holt Fleet to Ombersley, where it was re- erected and remains to this day. Now owned privately it stands at the head of the village high street having been preserved and looking distinquished in the characteristic black beams and white infill. Caring to preserve such a building at any cost Lord Sandy’s commitment to the village still lives on. A collection of photographs in a book by Arthur Turner can be bought from local bookshops. In 1814, Ombersley raised funds for “...erecting a new Church, and enlarging the Church Yard; and also, for building a Workhouse for the Poor”. The workhouse was situated in Hog Lane (renamed Hill Top Lane), where the building survives as Hill Top House. At the end of the 19th century, Ombersley had schools, several public houses, blacksmiths, carpenters, builders, butchers, greengrocers, doctors and tailors in the village. - Standard VAT rate will be 20% from 4 January 2011

The Chancellor: George Osborne George Osborne described his first Budget as “the unavoidable Budget” in which 77% spending cuts outweighed the 23% tax increases. The CGT changes were less harsh than was feared, and the annual CGT exemption remains the same at £10,200. Business owners welcomed the entrepreneur’s lifetime relief increase to £5m. The big revenue raiser will be the VAT increase in the New Year (2011). The government will also abolish the current pension rules that force people to buy annuities with pension funds at age 75.

Advice from the allotment

A yearly stroll through the season on Fred’s allotment July is usually one of the driest months so a lot of time may be spent watering. You can reduce water loss and save yourself some time by mulching with a layer of organic matter. This will help preserve moisture but may encourage slugs so you will need to take action against them. Another good method of preventing water loss is to hoe. This not only kills the weeds but breaks up the top of the soil stopping water from being drawn to the surface by capillary action and evaporating. Harvest The harvest should be in full swing now, providing you with the following: Broad Beans, French Beans, Runner Beans, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Courgettes, Cucumbers, Kale, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Onions, Spring Onions, Peas, Early Potatoes, Radish, Spinach, Tomatoes and Turnips. When you harvest your potatoes take care to remove all the tubers. Any left will not only sprout next year and become a weed but will also be a reservoir for disease and potato blight spores. It’s often worth forking over a few days after harvesting potatoes because more seem to miraculously appear. Cultivating There are still quite a few things you can sow in July: Spring Cabbage, Chicory, Chinese cabbage, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Peas, French Beans, Beetroot, Carrots, Radishes and Green Manure. Whitlenge diary July In July we hope to be able to bask in the glory of the garden, harvest lots, enjoy the sun and eat outside with friends.Theres still jobs to do though so here are a few suggestions. Prune shrubs that have flowered in early summer as soon as they have finished their display, e.g. Escallonia, Philadelphus, Weigela, Kolkwitzia etc. Lavenders benefit from a light trim now and so do Alchemilla Mollis to stop them taking over the whole garden. Keep dead heading but take care with dahlias as the spent flower pods and new flower buds look remarkably similar. Flower buds point up and have a pointed tip; flower pods hang down and have a flattish tip.

Top up ponds in hot weather, water can evaporate at an alarming rate during hot spells. Look after fish if the water is still and the level drops they may be starved of oxygen. Spray the pond with a jet of water to put some oxygen into the pond.

Take softwood cuttings at this time of year and they will root rapidly giving you lots of free plants e.g. Penstemons, Sages, Lavenders, Artemisia’s etc. Keep an eye on newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials, giving them a good soaking in dry weather, while their root systems are still establishing. Mulch to keep in moisture and this also helps keep down the weeds. The best defence against aphids is to have a happy hoverfly population. One hoverfly larvae can eat a hundred aphids a day and about a thousand in its lifetime. put in plants for them to feed on e.g. the poached egg plant (Limanthes douglasii), Alyssum, statice (Limonium sinuatum), Chamomile and Achillea. If you must use pesticides please leave it till late evening when all the bees have gone.

Thin oxygenating plants now as they can take over, leave by the pond so the wildlife can get back in, and then add to the compost heap. Don’t water lawns unless absolutely necessary. Do it once a week giving it a good soaking. You can give tired lawns a boost with a liquid fertiliser now (unless you did it in June) and you can see the difference in 2 to 3 days. Don’t be tempted to over do it; it’s just a waste of money.

Even in Shakespeare’s time English summers were tricky “Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summers lease hath all too short a date” so lets be ready when and if it arrives to enjoy every minute. 34

If you’re looking to implement an Internet Security package on your computer, the market place is rammed with so many different makes, versions and options, it can be a nightmare trying to decide which one to use, especially as they all boast that theirs is the best and will stop all known bugs DEAD. One of the oldest Internet Security software is Norton’s, which has gone through many changes since its inception many years ago, only problem is ( and you can ask any computer engineer ), it will slow your machine down noticeably due its demand on the processor and can even block internet access completely. Local Times will give you an analysis and breakdown of the Top Ten packages, but one thing I would definitely NOT recommend, installing two or more programs on the same machine. I know we can all be a bit on the paranoid side sometimes, but unless you want your poor old pc to grind to an absolute stand-still – DON’T DO IT !! So, how many computer viruses are there in the World ?? Let’s just say that in April 2008, there were in excess of 1 million different types in circulation – that was over two years ago and with the exponential growth witnessed in all areas of computing, the mind boggles. Let’s just say – there’s a lot..... Unfortunately, if you need or want to use the internet for ANYTHING, viruses, spyware, malware, rootkits and spam or all part of the experience and the only real way you can totally, 100% avoid getting any kind of nasty on your hard drive is – don’t use a computer, especially one with an internet connection. In a way, I suppose it would be like passing your car test and then asking the examiner “If I drive on the motorway to get from A to B, can you absolutely, positively, genuinely guarantee that I won’t have an accident ??” Use your PC, use the internet, but PLEASE ensure you have adequate protection and avoid the “dodgy” stuff (you know what I mean !!) – surf away dudes.
