This month’s front cover…
Problem for the High Street in Bewdley Severn Trent Water find a new water source…
At first glance this looks like the road has collapsed in the High Street, Bewdley, but we have created this photo from work done by a pavement artist Edgar Mueller. Many of these artists exist around the world and a selection of them can be found on our web site at wwwyourlocaltimes.co.uk.
Another artist to be admired is Doug Landis who uses pencils to create these wonderful drawings. You will be amazed how he does this so have a look on our web site.

Next month we will be featuring one of Philip Hawkins’ acclaimed railway paintings on the front cover and a feature on his artwork. You can view his website at www.quicksilverpublishing.co.uk

In April, we would not have believed that summer was just around the corner with the inclement weather. The plants began to struggle to overcome the cold nights and in some areas there was ground frost. Never-theless the last few days have ushered in the Summer where we can all get out and start enjoying the outside activities whether in the garden or enjoying our beautiful countryside. Little Larford had a wonderful show of tulips for its first National Gardens Scheme open day last month despite the late spring. Many other NGS gardens throughout the region will also be opening this summer and they are well worth a visit. Details can be found on our web site as well as listings of the many other events and places worth a visit. I hope all the residents will support the Bewdley in Bloom this year and enter their own gardens. If you have mislaid the form which came with the magazine last month, you can download it from our website at www. yourlocaltimes.co.uk and also read many of the features which we haven’t space to print. We would love to hear from anyone who would like to write features for the magazine so please contact me or go to the website for more information. Let’s support the events Bewdley has planned for the Summer.

The Big Fish Angler Extraordinaire
I’ve just returned from making a one hour DVD on carp fishing at the famous Avenue Fishery near Telford and what a great time I had. It’s called “In Pursuit of a 40” which means I try and catch a 40lb+ carp in three days. Now considering some anglers spend a lifetime trying to catch such a fish I must have been completely out of my mind when I accepted the challenge! But accepted I have and only when you buy the DVD will you know whether I have succeeded. I can tell you this I caught a good number of fish over 20lbs and the film crew have got some of the most amazing carp scenes I have ever seen so to say I’m proud is the understatement of the year! If your interested the DVD will be out mid June and available from Angling Times, tackle shops and SBS Baits website. By the way there is a short preview on the website now which gives an idea of the standard of the film, log on to www.sbsbaits.com and take a look. It’s about

carp fishing and the joys of spending a few days out on the bank. We show the reasons why anglers go fishing and why anglers spend so many hours in the middle of nowhere in their quest for a big fish, I’m sure any serious anglers will love it I hope so it’s the first DVD I’ve made for over a decade so I hope I’ve still got the gift of the gab! Now to June 16th the opening of the river season and as usual the River Severn and Teme will take the brunt of the attention from the army of river anglers. Most will be after the hardest fighting fish in the river the barbel and that’s what I will be after. Come down on the 16th I will be sitting in my swim near Bewdley Town centre with a rod out in a swim I’ve been baiting up for a few weeks. Don’t expect too much these first few days for the last time barbel saw anglers bait in any quantity was November last year. That was when the terrible winter arrived and after that came the close season. So for the best part of six months anglers have not been on the river so don’t expect them to eat lots at least not at first! Come the end of June they will have got used to seeing vast quantities of hemp, pellets and luncheon meat and the more you give them the more they will want. Bait is not cheap but here at SBS Baits we are trying to make it cheaper on the pocket and offering a buy 2 get 1 free deal to all anglers that come to the shop at Dixon Street, Kidderminster. I hope to see you on the river in the next few weeks or maybe in the local fishing pub the Great Western Hotel on the left before the Severn valley railway bridge. If you’re not fishing talking about it over a pint is nearly as good!

Entrepreneurs Do you want to continue working 50, 70, 100 hours a week the rest of your life? Good! Neither do I. Do you want to be able to take time off whenever you want to, without worrying about what’s going to happen to your business? So do I! Let’s think of “being promoted” as earning more and working less. You can raise your prices, but until you can remove yourself from being directly involved in doing the work that generates the income, there’s always going to be a limit to how much you can earn, and it can only increase very slowly. Passive income, on the other hand, is income that does not require your direct involvement. Some kinds of passive income you may be familiar with include owning rental property, royalties on an invention or creative work, and network marketing. If you want to earn more, work less, and have a decent retirement, you’re going to have to start creating income streams that do not require your direct involvement.
Whether you’re just starting your business, or you’ve been running it a while, the sooner you start thinking about how you are going to shift your business model to create more passive income, the sooner you can achieve personal and financial freedom. Residual Income is revenue that occurs over time from work done one time. Some examples include an insurance agent who gets commission every year when a customer renews his policy, a network marketing or direct sales rep’s income from their direct customers when they reorder a product every month or creating 26
a product like a fitness video and selling it at the gyms and outlets or a photographer who makes his photos available through a stock photography clearinghouse and gets paid a royalty whenever someone buys one of his images. As you can see, there are many different ways to generate residual income across a wide variety of businesses. It may be recurring income from the same customers, or the sales of a product to new customers. It may require no personal involvement whatsoever, such as an e-book sold on a web site, or it may require some personal interaction, such as the salesperson a calling the customer to remind them about their renewal and ask them if they want to change any of their advertising. Often, it’s something that you can delegate to an assistant. Note that this is different from merely recurring income. Recurring income may still require your involvement to earn the income, e.g., a coach or consultant on a monthly retainer, or a caterer who delivers lunch every Monday to the local school board. While this “active recurring income” offers welcome stability, it also tends to tie you down, and you still have limits on your earning capacity based on your own personal production capacity. There are many other ways of creating incomes without working and web sites, after you have spent time and money building them are another source. At Your local Publisher ltd we can create income streams of passive or residual to suit your lifestyle and build upon your hard work that you put into the project. If you want to start earning from day one go to www.yourlocalpublisher.com Or Email income@yourlocalpublisher.com. There is more information and a blog at http://tr.im/J5AB

Fred’s shed
Advice from the allotment
A yearly stroll through the season on Fred’s allotment Flaming June should bring us a hot sunshine filled month with the risk of frost passed and those in more northerly parts should be able to catch up with those in the south. We’re also moving towards the longest day, June 21st being the summer solstice so there is plenty of daylight to let you get on with things. There is a lot to do in June but the rewards for our efforts are coming in the harvest. Harvest Salad crops should be available, lettuce, spring onion, radish etc, Summer cabbage and early carrots. With carrots the later thinnings can provide a great addition to a salad or just steamed with a cooked meal. The early potatoes will be coming in this month. Because your potatoes will be going from ground to pan in a matter of minutes you will discover a truly wonderful flavour. Beetroot, young turnips and summer spinach may all be welcome fresh additions to your diet. The early peas could well be cropping in June, especially in the south. Cultivating As with May, we really need to keep on top of the weeds. Hoeing them off as small seedlings will make the job far easier than waiting for them to grow and send their roots down. Hoeing is best done on a dry day so that the weeds do not have a chance to recover. Don’t forget to sharpen your hoe before you start and frequently as you use it. Keeping a small sharpening stone or file in your pocket will make this more convenient. Continue thinning out your carrots, parsnips, beetroot etc. As I said above, later carrot thinnings can provide a tender and tasty addition to a meal. Water when required. Your best measuring instrument for water is your finger. If the top of the soil looks dry, insert your finger into the soil. If it’s dry at the tip, then you need to water. 30
Don’t just sprinkle a few drops on the surface, it probably won’t penetrate and do any good. Far better to give a good soaking less frequently that will get to the roots of your crops. In very dry weather, keeping the surface friable by hoeing will help keep the water from getting to the surface by capillary action and then evaporating away. It also helps water soak in when you do get some rain. Planting You should be able to plant out brassicas now. Broccoli and calabrese, Brussels sprouts, summer cabbage. If you have started beans in pots, both runner and French these can go into the outside too. Leeks may well be ready to move to their final position. Ideally they want to be about pencil thickness. Don’t follow the old guidance to trim the leaves and roots when transplanting leeks. It has been proven to be of no benefit and is counter-productive. Celery can go out now as well. Outdoor tomatoes can go to their final position now. When moving plants from greenhouse to outdoors it is a good idea to condition them to the move. Take them out in the day and put them back at night for a few days or move from greenhouse to coldframe. This avoids shocking the plant by a sudden and drastic change in climate.

Whitlenge diary June With their variety of colour roses are one of the joys of summer and many are at their peak now or at the end of the month. Damask roses flower now in a single but magnificent display of the most exquisitely scented flowers. If you want a show stopping bloom from a hybrid tea nip off all but the end bud and this gives you a an extra large flower with a longer stem perfect in a summer arrangement. Remove suckers as soon as you see them and keep an eye out for pests and nip them in the bud, “sorry”. Dead heading is always a regular task and really helps to prolong the flowering season by preventing the plant putting energy into producing seed, and instead giving new growth and another flush of flowers later in the year. Remove fading flowers from Rhododendrons, Camellias and Lilacs helping to keep the shape and vigour of the shrubs. We can safely plant outdoor tomatoes now, but always keep a few plants in the green house too. Don’t put them out until the first flowers have set or you will get
more leaf growth than blooms and therefore fruit. For varieties trained as single stemmed cordons tie into canes regularly and pinch out any side fruit. Feed weekly with a high potash fertiliser. To get the best quality fruit on your grapevines prune the nonfruiting laterals back to five leaves and fruiting laterals back to two leaves beyond the grape cluster. Don’t panic if you haven’t sown any vegetables yet as there is still time to have a go. Scrape out a shallow drill, fill it with water and once drained sow the seeds along the moist strip. Look on the packet for spacing and depths and if its your first time just choose a few favourites and look for quick growing varieties. Cut lawns to 3cm or 4 cm for a smooth finish, remembering that short grass is susceptible to drought so avoid mowing during hot periods to avoid scorch. New lawns need watering regularly. Grass clippings are a valuable ingredient in the compost heap and can be used as a mulch around plants and shrubs, our chicken and rabbits think them a tasty treat too. It can be a fantastic time for gardeners but do try “to take time to smell the roses”.
Even in Shakespeare’s time English summers were tricky “Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summers lease hath all too short a date” so lets be ready when and if it arrives to enjoy every minute. 33

How to Divorce Your Computer!! Having been married to my wife for 32 years, alongside a 30 year love/hate relationship with computers, I think I’m more than qualified to write on this subject and hopefully help some of you out there who have been through (or are going through) a similar experience… Being human, we are prone to addictions, compulsive disorders and obsessions and computer addiction is fast becoming a very real problem - I suspect most of you either know or have heard of someone who has fell under its spell. I was that person albeit 28 years ago with a young daughter and a wife on the verge of moving back with Mum. I suppose, in some respects, it is easy to understand why certain individuals get hooked, totally dependant on circumstances, upbringing and environment of course and when you’re addicted, you’re the only one who doesn’t realise the fact!!! In many ways, it just sneaks up on you and before you realise it you’ve joined the pale-skinned, blood-shot eyed user who gets the shakes when you leave the mouse for longer than 10 minutes, blinks severely when exposed to sunlight and spends more time on Facebook and chat rooms than in the “real world” with real people. The first stage to overcoming ANY addiction is to admit you have an addiction !! What are the signs / symptoms ?? 1. Mood swings and irritability when not at the computer 2. Showing signs of a lack of interest in offline activities 3. Loss of sleep and the abandoning of commitments to spend time at the computer 4. Not eating balanced meals and lack of personal hygiene 5. Lack of concentration and motivation for anything other than the computer Solutions… Thinking positively and reminding yourself that you are a strong, willing and valued member of society are vital issues in overcoming addiction. Limit the amount of time spent on the PC and put restrictions or locks on the sites that you are most addicted to. Allocate time and sessions for use and make sure you stick to it; ask other family members to help you achieve this, use timers and a rota if it helps. Continue communication with friends and family usually achieved on the computer via a letter or by phone; this increases the methods of communication you are skilled in and will help in many employment settings.
42
Write a list of the physical dangers that can occur as a result of computer or VDU overuse, keep it near to the computer or attached to the screen (when not in permitted use) for easy referral/reminder. Try and identify the root of the problem and why this addiction occurred, use the help of a counsellor if necessary, and try to develop coping strategies to avoid relapse. As this is a relatively new form of addiction, support groups may be difficult to find, why not set up your own, allowing for discussion with others who understand, a circle of friends who will spur each other on and a focus to fill your spare time. Engage yourself with non-computer related activities like sports or games reaping the benefits of both exercise and increasing your social circle. Learn to enjoy being outdoors and appreciating your local surroundings. Of course, you could simply throw the thing out the window!! Enjoy your liberation folks.
