Welcome… Echoing the immortal lines from the BBC television series Are You Being Served?, prospective readers of this magazine sometimes ask: ‘Are you free?’ Sadly, there are not many things in this world which are truly free. But readers receiving this month’s issue through their letterbox have experienced just that: a product completely free of charge. If you require a product or service, a place to eat or drink, or an event or venue to visit, then Your Local Times has local tradesmen and venues to suit most readers. Although distributed locally, Your Local Times has found its way to locations outside the region. Having run an advertisement last month for a van, I have now purchased one from a reader in Ludlow. How did they see the magazine? They picked one up from Bell’s Farm Shop, one of many advertisers who have copies on the counter for customers to take home and read at leisure. Promoting your business and its products can come in many guises: the radio, the local newspaper, the internet, the flyer … even the local Post Office window. But does it target households in Bewdley? Businesses in Kidderminster and the surrounding industrial estates? Businesses in Stourport and Hartlebury? The country inns and restaurants? Farm shops, garden centres and craft centres? Your Local Times promotes the local community and its businesses by providing a free magazine. Kidderminster Arts Festival No one told me about the Kidderminster Arts Festival. Purely by chance on a sunny Thursday afternoon in August I came across the entertainers in the High street. Buskers, who Sam with vocalist were never like this in my Becky Neale day. A saxophone player, named Sam, and Becky the singer, whos voice would grace any X factor show, entertained the few shoppers who had stopped to listen with a medley of Rock and Roll numbers. Sam Pagett, who is seventeen, is from Stourport and with Laura Broad from Kidderminster went on to win the best ‘Busker Comp’ 2008 and hope to do as well Sam with Laura Broad this year. Farther down the street The Marvellous box of Peeps and Delights, a take on what the Butler saw, which was very popular in the 1920’s and 1930’s at seaside resorts was hosted by a Cockney, aptly named Alfie, and his Alfie and The Peep Show assistant feverishly working the levers at the rear of the box, tempting shy shoppers to peep at the marvels in the box. What a pity the local council didn’t advertise this months event more widely in an effort to draw in the public and possibly increase the visitors to the town centre which may have increased the revenue of the traders. I will enjoy the remaining events and report on any forth coming festivals happening in Wyre Forest, as long as someone tells me about them. The Editor

A Postcard From Kidderminster

The artist, James Howarth, has endeavoured to produce an inclusive painting depicting a diverse range of interesting people and places in Kidderminster. It is of course impossible to show all aspects of a whole town in one piece of artwork. Hence the title, ‘A Postcard From Kidderminster’, which alludes to being a snapshot of the town rather than Kidderminster in it’s entirety. The painting should soon be completed. “I ‘ve always drawn and painted. I came from an artistic family so it has always seemed like a very natural and normal thing to do. After graduating I produced and showed a lot of work in London, exhibiting in bars and galleries as well as doing commission based work. My wife, Rachael, and I moved to Kidderminster in 2002 which is where I am now based.” 4

Country Fair and Horticultural Show to be opened by Christine Walkden KHS two day Country Fair and Horticultural Show will be held in the grounds of the RAMADA hotel on the B4190 Habberley Road between Kidderminster & Bewdley DY12 1LA (just past the main Hotel entrance going towards Bewdley) on Saturday and Sunday the 12th and 13th of September. Just before Christmas last year Trinity Methodist Church was the victim of an arson attack which destroyed the interior of the church. Since then the congregation have met for worship in the church hall but obviously miss the spiritual support of the normal church surroundings. At last plans have been drawn up for the refurbishment of the church and this work will begin very shortly. Although Trinity Methodist Church is obviously 6

primarily a place of worship both for regular Sunday Services, weddings, baptisms and funerals it is also used by many community groups including the Blood Donor Service. We hope you will support and help us. Reverend Mary Austin will be there to receive your gifts and donations and answer any questions about the restoration project. 70th Birthday Jump A local charity official is heading for the high jump to help her organisation celebrate its 70th birthday. Anne Rendell (51), a money advice worker at Wyre Forest Citizens Advice Bureau, will be leaping 12,000 feet from an aeroplane on September 4 to mark the National CAB organisations 70th birthday. Anne will be strapped to a member of the famous Red Devils army display team and will experience up to 40 seconds of free-fall at a speed of 120mph. What a Brave Girl! She hopes her parachute dive will raise at least £5,000 for the Wyre Forest based bureau to improve the services in the district. Anne has been with the Bureau since 2004 joining as a volunteer whilst also working in banking for the past 29 years . She gave up her banking career to join us full time in April 2009. Anne said “the ethos of the Citizens Advice Bureau is inspiring and the job satisfaction it delivers made my decion to leave banking after 29 years an easy one”. The CAB both locally and nationally , has helped countless individuals over the years, but many people don’t realise that our very existence depends 18

on the generosity of funders, be they individuals, voluntary groups, corporate and public sponsors or whatever. Staging this parachute jump will be a very public way of highlighting the work that the CAB in Wyre Forest and the other bureaux perform. Without them, many vulnerable sections of society would have nowhere to turn to in their hour of need. The bureau in Kidderminster was set up in 1963, and although there are a small number of paid staff, the vast majority of advice work is tackled by a team of almost 50 highly-trained dedicated volunteers, seeing clients in Kidderminster, Stourport, Bewdley and other outreach locations. Anne leads a busy full life as a wife, mother and is a keen runner. Her dedication to the CAB is infectious and everyone knows she will tackle this crazy challenge with the same spirit and enthusiasm she tackles everything with. The Colliers Arms Brightly-coloured perfumed flowers in neatly-tendered planters and window boxes greet you as make your way to the entrance to this quaint country pub. Their creator, Joan, has won a first in the Bewdley in Bloom competition in the Public House category. How wonderful it looks. The Colliers Arms, situated on the Tenbury Road at Clows Top is a family-owned traditional pub and restaurant, with AA and Michelin recommendations in both 2008 and 2009. It was also a CAMRA Real Ale Pub in 2009. Joint owners and managers, Michael Claydon and Charlie Hill, have vast experience of managing award-winning establishments throughout Worcester and took ownership of The Colliers in 2007. They have transformed it into this awardwinning restaurant. The ambience of the pub is â&#x20AC;&#x153;olde worldâ&#x20AC;? with traditional beer pumps and an array of wines and spirits adorning the shelves. There is a comfortable lounge area of tables and chairs, with the dining area of dark oak tables at the rear of the premises overlooking a new patio. Using only free-range eggs and locally-reared meat and chicken, their mission is to support local businesses and provide customers with the finest quality home-made food and good service - all at an affordable price. Brian has also had his successes in winning a first prize with this impressive vegetable plot and can be seen most evenings after his duties at the local hop farm tending the fruits of the orchard, the vegetables and the herb garden. Showcasing our activities The Showcase for older peoples services was held on the 6th August at Kidderminster town hall. Freebies for older people were particularly successful, such as light bulbs and shopping bags. Over thirty groups attended ranging from advice on diabetes, arthritis and stroke to services within Wyre Forest Sheltered Housing schemes. Over 150 people approached WFSH displays enquiring about activities and volunteering opportunities. The showcase is organised by the Healthy ageing focus group. Two representatives from WFSH schemes, who sit on the Healthy Ageing Group, Sue Gowen, Activities Co-ordinator and Angela McGuire, Volunteer Co-ordinator, based at Arch Hill court, attended and publicised activities within the schemes. These activities are open to everyone regardless of whether they live in Community Housing or not. The services provided include: seated yoga, coffee mornings, and bingo. Craft clubs, friendship clubs, and ‘extend’ exercise. The Cooking pot within sheltered housing schemes provides a healthy, affordable lunch, which is open to everyone. There is a great need within the schemes for volunteers to become helpers for the activities, befrienders, kitchen assistants and help with transportation. 26

Japanese anemones, one of the treats of the later part of the year, are in full flower now and are accompanied by late pokers, rudbeckias and the first of the main show of the Asters. Attention to detail will keep the garden fresh and interesting in the weeks ahead. Continued dead heading, the cutting back of summer perennials, which have finished flowering and a light forking through the borders, are all on-going tasks. Do not neglect the kitchen garden as crops are harvested.

Leave the heads of the verbena over winter to set seed. During frosty weather they will look particularly striking.

Establish a new lawn Warm September rains make this month an ideal time in which to establish new lawns, either from seed or using turf. In both cases ground should be properly prepared and levelled to form a firm surface. Seed should be sown evenly on a dry, windless day at a rate of fifty grams per square metre. After sowing, soil should be given a very light racking partially to cover the seed. Germination should take place within ten days. Water and lightly roll. October

Take account of autumn colour when planting Shrubs and trees. Plant bare rooted roses and tulips. Begin preparation for winter.
