Zero Carbon Britain is a project of the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). It aims to demonstrate that the UK could reduce its carbon emissions to zero in the next couple of decades. Major CAT reports in 2007 and 2010 showed how this could be done, by ‘powering down’ (reducing waste and improving the efficiency of energy use) and ‘powering up’ (rapidly phasing-in renewable energy sources). A new phase of the project currently under way involves building an hourly model of the UK’s energy supply and demand system, showing in much more detail how renewable energy sources could power an energy efficient Britain. In this weekend course, participants will investigate the results of the latest research as well as the earlier work, and discuss what it could mean for them, their families and communities, and the UK as a whole. It will include site visits to nearby renewable energy projects in Devon. The course will be led by Godfrey Boyle, Professor of Renewable Energy at the Open University, and Peter Harper, Head of Research and Innovation at CAT.
