Lifting Leaders
Shifting Power | Transforming Society
2015 COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS BY
GENERAL COLIN L. POWELLSome of you may know by now what you want to do with your life, what your life’s work will be. But many of you may still be unsure, still looking. You may change your mind several times along the way. Wherever you go, whatever you do, wherever fate and destiny take you, you know you will go there well prepared by the superb education you received here at The City College of New York. As each of you looks forward to your future, make sure that you give a good measure of your time and your talent and your treasure to others, to those in need. The need to serve others in our society has never been greater. Money and position will or will not follow you, but always make sure that satisfaction is what you’re seeking. Satisfaction, every day. You can go home at night saying I did my very best, I did my very best. Make sure you have a purpose in life that goes beyond just position and money. And that purpose has to be rooted in the willingness and the desire and the intent to help others, to serve others.

ANTHONY D. ROMERO
Anthony D. Romero is the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, the nation’s premier defender of civil liberties. He took the helm of the organization just seven days before the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Throughout Romero’s tenure, the ACLU has pursued aggressive litigation and advocacy around the greatest injustices of our time, including: challenging the injustices of the war on terror; fighting to close Guantánamo; winning the freedom to marry for same-sex couples; ending the patenting of human genes; reducing mass incarceration and combating racial disparities within the criminal justice system; ensuring federal civil rights protections for LGBTQ workers; bringing 434 legal actions against the Trump administration; launching a nationwide Systemic Equality campaign for racial justice; enshrining the right to abortion in state constitutions; and fighting the assaults on transgender rights and dignity.
An attorney with a history of public interest activism, Romero has presided over the most successful growth in the ACLU’s history, dramatically increasing its membership, national and affiliate staff, and increasing the headquarters’ budget ten-fold. He also led a dramatic expansion of the ACLU’s presence in the American South and in battleground states. This unprecedented growth enabled the ACLU to expand its nationwide litigation,
lobbying, political advocacy, and public education efforts. Given the limits of federal and Supreme Court litigation, Romero also oversaw the ACLU’s expansion into high-impact political work and state court advocacy. A nonpartisan organization, the ACLU advances civil liberties and civil rights without respect to political affiliation. It works with Republicans and Democrats, and locks horns with both.
Romero is the ACLU’s sixth executive director and the first Latino and openly gay man to serve in that capacity. In 2005, Romero was named one of Time Magazine’s 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America, and he has received dozens of public service awards and an honorary doctorate from the City University of New York School of Law.
In 2007, Romero co-authored “In Defense of Our America: The Fight for Civil Liberties in the Age of Terror,” a book that takes a critical look at civil liberties in this country at a time when constitutional freedoms are in peril.
Born in New York City to parents who hailed from Puerto Rico, Romero was the first in his family to graduate from high school. He is a graduate of Stanford University Law School and the Princeton University School of Public Policy and International Affairs. He is a member of the New York Bar Association and has sat on numerous nonprofit boards.
MESSAGE FROM
The Chair and The Dean
Dear Graduates,
Today, we gather together to celebrate the Class of 2024, the largest ever graduating class of the Colin Powell School. We honor your hard work and perseverance, your talent and commitment. On behalf of the faculty, staff, and Board of Visitors of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, congratulations!
Your Colin Powell School education has prepared you to enter professional life, to be leaders in your fields, and to make a difference. No matter what path you decide to take, you are equipped now to communicate a vision, to excite others into working with you, to execute a plan. Apply those skills in service to your community, wherever you may find it. Seek out places that need your talent. Devote yourself to lifting up others. Fulfill the faith that we have in you.
If we have succeeded, you leave here with as many questions about yourself and this world as you have answers. The journey from here will have twists and turns, ups and downs. Be patient with yourself. Support one another. Be open to continued learning. Keep your values, your vision, and your ambition.
As you move on to your next chapter, remember that you will always be part of the City College and Colin Powell School communities. Stay close to those who care about you— including those of us at the Colin Powell School who are invested in your success. Lean on us, as we will lean on you, to form community and to leverage bonds of strength toward solving social problems. We need your commitment, your perspective, and your passion to make all of our futures brighter.
Please accept our personal congratulations for what you have accomplished and our enthusiastic best wishes for your continued success.
Linda Powell Chair, Board of Visitors Andrew Rich Richard J.Henley and Susan L. Davis Dean
CLASS 2024 VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIANS
CLASS 2024 VALEDICTORIAN
Alivya Barry is a biracial, first-generation graduate receiving her BA/MA in Research Psychology with a minor in Anthropology. As a recipient of the T-34 National Institutes of Health Bridges to Baccalaureate grant, Alivya was able to transfer to CCNY from Borough of Manhattan Community College, where she received her AA in Psychology in 2022. During her time at the Colin Powell School and CCNY, Alivya has been actively involved in a range of research projects. She has presented her work at several conferences and has received awards and certifications for her contributions. Alivya’s academic achievements reflect her dedication to her studies and her commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others. Alivya’s journey into researching resilience in children facing trauma is deeply personal, rooted in her own experiences and a profound empathy for others. Alivya’s ultimate goal is to obtain a PhD in Clinical Developmental Psychology, and to become a university professor, researcher, and clinician focusing on sexual abuse and resilience. She is passionate about integrating evidence-based practices into program development and identifying innovative solutions for poverty alleviation. Alivya looks forward to the continued contributions she will make in the future.
CLASS 2024 SALUTATORIANS
ZINÉ EBERSOHN
Ziné Ebersohn is a South African born international student majoring in Psychology and Philosophy. She is honored to be part of the Colin Powell Fellowship for Leadership and Public Service, a fellowship that challenges and shapes the future leaders of various communities. Growing up in South Africa, Ziné always felt a profound purpose in learning and searching for what healing means in different communities. Her experience as a Student Success Guide mentor at the Colin Powell School and a youth mental health intern at I’RAISE Girls & Boys International had a significant impact on her connection with the field of psychology. Sharing the journey of her own mental health struggles has empowered Ziné to ask complex questions about mental health access and the disparity that exists in the larger structure thereof. After graduation Ziné plans to apply for graduate programs that offer dual focus on the philosophy of psychology with a degree in clinical psychology as the main goal. What remains most important about her time at the City College of New York and the Colin Powell School is the community of curious and phenomenal students and faculty that has impacted her life. Ziné hopes to spend her future in the academy, while using her passion for healing and people to generate more accessible mental health services for all. Most importantly, she will listen, be kind, and share joy wherever she goes.
STEVEN FERNANDEZ
Steven Fernandez is a first-generation student from the Dominican Republic, whose journey to the United States ingrained in him a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the value of education. After coming to the United States in 2007, he was raised in the vibrant Hispanic and Latinx community of Inwood, Washington Heights where his family faced numerous challenges, including housing instability and high living costs. His family’s resilience through these challenges fueled his determination to pursue a career in finance to help others with the same needs. He is a financial economics graduate of The City College of New York’s Colin Powell School. He discovered his passion for economics and finance through his curiosity about how monetary and banking policies have an impact on individuals and communities, especially in the wake of global events like the pandemic. Throughout his time at CCNY, Steven has been actively involved in a range of activities, including serving as a Teaching Assistant in
the Department of Finance and founding the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) chapter at The City College of New York. He has enjoyed multiple career-accelerating opportunities, including internships at BNY Mellon, Bloom Energy, and Catholic Charities. Steven is committed to leveraging his skills and experiences to drive positive change within underrepresented communities and helping business leaders make sound business decisions using data-driven insights. His plans include pursuing a master’s degree in applied analytics to further enhance his expertise in financial analytics and obtaining a role within finance analytics, data analytics, or operations to make meaningful contributions to the industry. With a strong sense of resilience, passion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, Steven is determined to make a lasting impact, one small step at a time.
SUMAIYA RASHID
Sumaiya Rashid is a Queens native and a first-generation Bangladeshi-American, majoring in Psychology with a double minor in International Studies and Anthropology. She is curious, motivated, and committed to achieving social justice, related to promoting mental health accessibility, and education equity. Sumaiya has participated in the Colin Powell Fellowship in Leadership and Public Service, and the S Jay Levy Fellowship for Future Leaders. She has immersed herself in understanding the diverse array of social, political, and cultural perspectives regarding contemporary challenges and addressing them with effective solutions. Through the support of these fellowships, she has interned at the International Rescue Committee and I’RAISE Girls & Boys International. She is also a Student Success Guide and Peer Mentor. Sumaiya’s personal and professional experiences drive her interests in industrial and organizational psychology, specifically in pursuit of a career that transforms the traditional workplace. Currently, she works as the Graduate Recruitment Coordinator at the Colin Powell School supporting the MPA, MIA, and MA Econ programs. After graduation, Sumaiya plans to further her career in human resources, particularly in talent acquisition & recruitment, in order to help foster equitable and inclusive workspaces. She hopes to be a catalyst for change and create pathways for underrepresented groups to achieve long-lasting visibility and equal opportunity.
KAZI TEJWARKazi Tejwar, a double major in Political Science and Sociology with a minor in Legal Studies at CCNY, has made significant contributions to civic engagement in his community. As the son of Bengali immigrants from Flatbush, Brooklyn, his commitment to public service is deeply personal. Tejwar played a key role in the John Lewis Initiative, transforming CCNY into an early voting
location to expand voting access in Harlem as a rebuke against attacks on voting rights nationwide. This initiative was part of his broader efforts to foster democratic participation, reflecting his dedication to community service and civic engagement. He also aided in revitalizing the Democracy Corps Fellowship at the Colin Powell School, strengthening ties with the NYC Civic Engagement Commission and creating internship opportunities that encourage civic involvement among students. His internships with notable political leaders like House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Congressman Adriano Espaillat, along with his activism with Amnesty International USA against invasive surveillance, have enriched his experience in legislative advocacy, community service, and serving marginalized and disadvantaged communities. Tejwar’s journey includes taking advantage of the amount of fellowship opportunities provided through the school such as the Democracy Corps, Colin Powell Fellowship in Leadership and Public Service, and being named the Ropes & Gray Scholar through the Honors Program in Legal Studies, underscoring his proactive engagement with critical societal issues. Guided by humility, Tejwar’s work aims to uplift his community, striving for equity and opportunity. His upcoming Capitol Hill internship through the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) congressional fellowship continues his commitment to serving those who shaped his path. Upon graduating, he intends to continue his work to serve the underserved by fighting for greater equity and fairness in the distribution of opportunity in the United States.
