MESSAGE FROM LINDA POWELL
Dear Graduates,
Congratulations, Class of 2023!
Ten years ago, my father founded the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership because of his deep faith in City College and its students. Dad’s story is the story of many of our students: that you can come to this school from a poor community, the child of immigrants, the first in your family to attend college, and you can leave equipped to change the world.
No matter what career you choose, the education you received here gives you the skills to lead, to communicate a vision, to excite others into working with you, to execute a plan. Apply those skills to the service of your community, wherever you may find it. Seek out places that need your talent. Devote yourself to lifting up others. Fulfill the faith that we have in you.
Dad graduated from City College in 1958, and he never forgot where he came from. And—while it may have taken him 50 years!—he came back and gave back. Remember that this college, this campus, your classmates, and your fellow alumni will always be a part of your community. Trust each other, call upon each other, work together, and support one another. While you are graduating today, we are not saying goodbye, we are saying welcome, as you join the thousands of extraordinary Colin Powell School alumni who graduated in the last decade.
While I am not a City College graduate, I have been a proud member of this community since the Colin Powell School’s founding. I cheered with Dad at every commencement and I continue to share the pride in you that I see in your families’ eyes. I know in my core that when we invest in you, we invest in our future and in the future of this country.
Go forth and carry on Dad’s legacy! Have big dreams, set high standards, never stop learning, and believe in yourself as we do. I hope you’ll wear the mission and the legacy of the Colin Powell School with pride and that in the years to come you will help us advance that mission by your words and deeds. Together, we may make the world better for those who come next.
With heartfelt congratulations,
Linda Powell Chair, Board of Visitors

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Dear Graduates,
Today, your hard work and perseverance, your talent and commitment, are recognized with the conferral of your degrees. This is a big day for you, for your family and friends; and it is also an important day for the nation and our world. Today, you enter a rarified set: fewer than ten percent of the world’s population has a college degree. Only thirty percent of Americans earn a Bachelor’s degree. What you have accomplished is heady stuff, and you should feel very proud. On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, congratulations!
The degree you are receiving today is just the icing on the cake. What we really celebrate is the knowledge and skills, the relationships and friendships, that you take from this place. We mark this rite of passage because you are ready. Your Colin Powell School education has prepared you to enter professional life and to make a difference for the better. We need you—now more than ever—to tackle big challenges and tough jobs. You are ready to be leaders in service to our city, our country, and the world.
My greatest wish for each of you is that you find happiness and that you bring happiness to others. I hope that you enjoy a rewarding life filled with the joy of accomplishment and optimism about what is possible. You enter a world more troubled and complicated than when I sat where you are. You are needed to make the future brighter.
If we, as a faculty and staff, have succeeded, you leave here with as many questions about yourself and this world as you have answers. The journey from here will have twists and turns, ups and downs. Be patient with yourself. Support one another. Be open to continued learning. Keep your values, your vision, and your ambition. Stay close to those who care about you—including those of us at the Colin Powell School who are invested in your success. Lean on us, as we will lean on you, to form community and to leverage bonds of strength toward solving social problems. We need your commitment, your perspective, and your passion to make all of our futures brighter.
The Colin Powell School and City College have given you the foundations for success. As you move on to your next chapter, remember that you will always be part of the Colin Powell School and City College communities. You take your place as part of a proud tradition. My colleagues on the faculty and staff believe in you, and we are counting on you.
Please accept my personal congratulations for what you have accomplished and my enthusiastic best wishes for your continued success.
Sincerely,
Andrew Rich Richard J. Henley and Susan L. Davis Dean

JENNIFER GARCIA
Jennifer Garcia, a first-generation Mexican-American who was born and raised in Brooklyn, discovered City College after taking a gap year. She made a leap of faith, transferring from architecture to business and journalism. The Colin Powell School allowed her to level up her career aspirations and accomplish more than she thought possible, thanks to its diverse range of programs, internships, and fellowship opportunities.
Jennifer was in the inaugural cohort of NBCU Academy Fellows. With the support of the fellowship and the Office of Student Success, Jennnifer interned with CNBC en Español, integrating her business major with reporting to help promote financial literacy within the Spanish-speaking community. She produced multiple original segments on the topic and is currently interning with the NBC Olympics research team as they prepare for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Post-graduation, Jennifer has been accepted into the Bilingual Journalism program at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, and the Master of Science program in journalism at Columbia University. Her goal is to inspire others with the stories she reports so that they can help spark conversations for change. She hopes to continue growing with NBC Universal and mentor aspiring journalists from underrepresented backgrounds.

Nija is a passionate advocate for equity and inclusion, as evidenced by her numerous leadership roles on campus. She founded and served as President of the CCNY Pre-Law Club, was a Vice President managing a Peer Mentorship Program under the S Jay Levy Alumni Board, and served as Secretary of the Senate of the Undergraduate Student Government, where she contributed to uplifting student concerns. She has participated in several prestigious fellowships and honors programs, including the Colin Powell Fellowship in Leadership and Public Service, S Jay Levy Fellowship, Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship, and Honors Program in Legal Studies. Nija’s past personal and professional experiences have inspired her to pursue business law and protect individuals’ economic human rights. She intends to support under-resourced entrepreneurs, create generational wealth in disadvantaged community groups, and help mitigate poverty worldwide through her work in this field.
LORENA MODESTO
Lorena Modesto is a passionate community organizer, educator, and student leader double majoring in Political Science and Sociology. She was born in Guerrero, Mexico and raised in the Bronx, immigrating to the US at the age of 5. Lorena draws from her personal experiences and her love for education to empower and uplift immigrant communities. Currently, Lorena serves as President of the CCNY Dream Team, an undocumented student-led space that upholds voices, experiences, stories, and rights of immigrant folks and allies. She was selected as the NY Dream Act Education Fellow in 2020 at the New York State Youth Leadership Council, the first undocumented youth-led organization in New York. She serves as a CUNY Immigrant Student Ambassador, assisting students in applying for state financial aid, providing information about scholarship opportunities, and facilitating undocu-art events, and was involved with the Colin Powell School’s Racial Justice Fellowship as a Street Vendor Project intern. After graduation, Lorena plans to apply to law schools and dedicate herself to immigration law.

In 2022, she interned in Washington D.C., researching Labor movements of the early 20th century, which sparked her interest in writing and conducting community-based research to inform policy and effective social change. She completed a service learning project in Senegal, studying sustainability and ongoing community initiatives to find relevant solutions to complex environmental and socio-economic challenges caused by climate breakdown. Having grown up in Rural Jacmel, Haiti, Kethia understands the importance of supporting communities and anchoring people in sustainable long-term solutions that are efficient and equitable.
