A popular characterisation is that we are living in a VUCA world. Coined by the US Military at the beginning of the century, the acronym stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous, and it seems a fitting description of the ‘new normal’ we find ourselves in. The problem is that our leaders, and our ideas around leadership, were formed in the ‘old normal’ world of hierarchies, stable power structures, status and control. A world of fear, scarcity and competition, in fact.
