Now, more than ever, it is important to give ourselves the space to breathe. City and country environments became quite polarised during these unusual past few months; for some, urban parks have been essential refuges and, for others, rural locales their own escape. Dorchester Collection is where we can seek space, a rich resource for privacy and renewal—from distanced tables for tea, to sprawling suite terraces overlooking expansive parks, open-air yoga at Hotel Bel-Air and the 240 acres of greenery at Coworth Park in England. Breathe. Think, act and relax positively these coming months ahead, for health of body and mind is precious.

At the centre of London society since it opened in 1931, The Dorchester is set in the heart of Mayfair opposite Hyde Park. The landmark 1930s Art Deco exterior houses a stunning ballroom, refurbished rooms and suites, all of which are tastefully designed with elegant English interiors. The award-winning Dorchester Spa is also one of the city’s ultra glamorous pampering destinations. The hotel’s restaurants and bars rank amongst the city’s best and include The Promenade, The Grill, China Tang, Parcafé and the three Michelin-starred Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester.
Situated in the heart of Mayfair, 45 Park Lane has 45 rooms, including suites all with a view of Hyde Park, and a Penthouse Suite with panoramic views of London. Coworth Park is a country house and spa that rewrites the rules. In addition to its 70-bedroom country house, the jewel in the crown amongst Coworth Park’s 16 suites is The Dower House, a three-bedroom private residence that dates back to 1775.
Overlooking the beautiful Tuileries Garden, Le Meurice stands majestically in one of the most stylish Parisian neighbourhoods. Its rooms, decorated in Louis XVI style, as well as its Spa Valmont, offer a sense of calm and luxury in a space where history and the latest fashion trends mingle with perfection. Both offering refined French cuisine, Restaurant le Meurice under Alain Ducasse claims two Michelin stars whilst the stunning, hand-painted ceiling of the recently renovated Restaurant Le Dalí, named after the hotel’s regular guest Salvador Dalí, sets the dramatic tone for an overall heightened experience of excellence.
Hôtel Plaza Athénée symbolises the spirit of Paris: a spectacular palace hotel perfectly positioned near the Eiffel Tower and River Seine, on the prestigious tree-lined avenue Montaigne, home of Parisian haute couture. Why was it time to reflect upon Dorchester Collection’s branding?
This is just one example of how we instil our employees with the sense that
Dorchester Collection’s new brand journey started in 2017 as a natural evolution of our positioning. A cross-functional team was brought together as we looked to establish the exact intertwining component which is intrinsic to each of our properties around the globe. You could say that we were looking for the ‘golden thread’ that links all our legendary properties together. Through the process we established five brand attributes that we believe no other luxury hotel brand can claim: We have a legendary culture; we form lasting relationships with our guests; we reflect a valued way of life; we are confident;
they are able to do the ‘right thing’ and not always just what ‘the rules’ say. In all our hotels, we continuously seek to elevate the boundaries of guest-centricity through truly meaningful interactions. In your role as ‘chief customer experience officer’, how do you stay connected to the experiences of your guests? Penthouse Pop site-specific artwork by celebrated British pop artist Sir Peter Blake CBE hangs on the walls of London’s 45 Park Lane Penthouse Suite. Today an octogenarian, still at work, he continues taking others into new reveries with his pop perspective. His ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album cover for The Beatles—a colourful image depicting the “Fab Four” in front of a collage of celebrities and historical figures—has been widely lauded for expanding the graphic design industry into popular music, making the connections between art and pop explicit. ‘Dancing Girls Over Rotten Row’, a recent work by Sir Peter Blake, expresses style diversions and similarities from his most famous work. The image is vibrant and distinctly, historically London. ‘Rotten Row’ is a broad track running along the south side of Hyde Park; during the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a fashionable place for upper-class Londoners to be seen horse riding. It was also the first artificially lit highway in Britain. “When I started to make this print, I did what I always do which is to think of the area, in this case, Hyde Park. I researched vintage postcards of Rotten Row and came up with images upon which I collaged the figures dancing over it. There are various kinds of theatrical characters that I use in my work but, for here, in my mind they are a famous troupe of dancers doing their performance in Hyde Park,” the artist explains. Sir Peter Blake has generations of perspective on the career of being an artist. “My career is over, and I realise that. But I’m still working; I’m still an artist. I made a sort of ‘conceptual retirement’, which meant that I still work but that I would retire from greed, avarice, ambition_ the nasty side of art.” He now cultivates all categories of work, including sculpture, for a career perhaps freer than it has ever been. Sir Peter Blake’s work, at least at 45 Park Lane, dances above Hyde Park and history all at once. 45 Park Lane London W1K 1PN T. +44 20 7493 4545

Return to Wonderland An allegory for the subconscious dream state? An allusion to the use of psychedelics?…or simply a fantastical work of nonsensical folly? Regardless of the many disputing theories as to its meanings, or perhaps thanks to these, one thing is undeniable: ‘Alice in Wonderland’ has captured the imagination and awe of children and adults alike, continuously, for the past 157 years. Paying tribute to this enduring and elusive tale written by Lewis Carroll, the V&A Museum holds an exhibition exploring its origins, adaptations and reinventions—those which have pervaded every medium of pop culture since, from film, to fashion, to art, to music. Most recently, Lady Gaga featured a song inspired by Alice in her latest album ‘Chromatica’. Among the 300 objects on view are costumes and sketches from Tim Burton’s adaptation on the big screen, Alice in Wonderland (2010), the fifth highest-grossing film of all time during its theatrical run, as well as concept art from Walt Disney’s ever-iconic 1951 animated film of the same name. Alice in Wonderland’s spirit of wild imagination is infectious: its surrealist world has appealed to artists such as Salvador Dalí and Dorothea Tanning who have created related oeuvres, and its extravagant characters have even inspired high-fashion looks, such as the Mad Hatter appearing on the runway of Viktor & Rolf’s Haute Couture show at Paris Fashion Week. Curious indeed. Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser, Opening 27 March 2021 Victoria and Albert Museum, Cromwell Rd, Knightsbridge, London SW7 2RL

The Sorrow of the King, 1952
Masterpieces of Matisse An artist, a lifetime of work and a thoroughly modern way of viewing art—Centre Pompidou in Paris offers a rare opportunity to explore the genius of Henri Matisse. Marking the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of his birth in 1869, the exhibition brings together some of his best-known works which, specifically, explore the interweaving of text and image in his practice. Nine sections are presented chronologically, assembling over 230 major masterworks. Throughout his career, he tirelessly developed techniques for painting, drawing, sculpture and illustrated books, up to his invention of drawing colour itself with the gouache-painted cut-outs he made near the end of his life. In 1942, Matisse, speaking to poet Louis Aragon, declared: “The importance of the artist is to be measured by the number of new signs he has introduced into the plastic language.” The name of the Paris exhibition on view, ‘Matisse, comme un roman’, or ‘Matisse, like a novel’ takes inspiration from a book written by Aragon in 1971, ‘Henri Matisse, roman’, on his encounter with the artist. When Matisse had spoken to the poet years before, knowingly or unknowingly, he was perhaps speaking of his very own language legacy in the making for art history at large. the DSWF’s new leader as she opens a new chapter for the impactful legacy her grandfather left behind. As Trustee of the DSWF since 2007, I had the pleasure of knowing your grandfather David Shepherd and now look forward to working with you in your new leadership role. What values did you inherit from David? My late grandfather was bold, brave and unashamed in his assessment of the damage humans have inflicted upon the natural world, as the most dangerous species to ever walk the earth. At the same time however, he also embodied what it truly meant to care. He didn’t just build a career on the natural world and the species which call her home, he fell in love with it as have I. Above all, he was passionate and wholeheartedly committed to saving wildlife and supporting the brave men and women on the front line of species survival. These two qualities ring true fo me personally and represent our mission to Fight, Protect and Engage on behalf of wildlife across Africa and Asia to turn the tide on extinction. What experiences led you to where you are today? My grandfather’s drive and determination were infectious. Growing up hearing his elaborate stories from the bush, of his adventures and lucky escapes from wildlife with a canvas in tow, made a lasting impression on me. As a child I was lucky enough to be carted around Africa with my mother, Melanie, who ran DSWF for over 25 years. Most of our trips were inevitably in the back of a dusty Landrover on its last legs or in varying degrees of utter disrepair. This gave me insight into our work from the other side of a normal tourist lens, an uncensored view into the harsh reality of poaching and wildlife crime. It stuck with me and gave me the same grit and determination held by both my grandfather and mother. One specific place which drew us together is Zambia, a country we all instantly fell in love with. To this day, it feels like one of Africa’s untapped and truly wild spaces where wildlife has the chance to breathe in a landscape relatively unaffected by humans. The Kafue National Park and the conservation work being undertaken there will always be a shared love for us. Watching the sunset on the banks of the mighty Kafue River reinvigorates your soul in a way few other places can. More importantly, it never fails to remind me of why our fight is so important. What would you say is the connection between art and conservation?
Our ‘Art of Survival’ programme, compiled of exhibitions, children’s art competitions and world class art initiatives allows us to connect with people through a medium everyone can understand and relate to, which is often harder to achieve through the more complex aspects of conservation work and policy. What is the focus of your rich education programmes? Educating both children and adults on environmental protection is key if we are to achieve long-term change. Whilst humans are the cause of so many environmental disasters and conservation nightmares, they also provide the solution. All generations, our own included, need to better understand the impact of our decisions and actions on environmental stability, from the implications of engaging in wildlife offences to the dangers of consuming wildlife products. Many of the communities we support are some of the most vulnerable in the world due to their socio-economic situation and reliance on wildlife economies. It is vital people are given hope and an opportunity to protect and celebrate wildlife rather than view it simply as a commodity to be traded in order to survive. For 15 years now Dorchester Collection has hosted the Wildlife Ball, an annual fundraising event. Do you have any outstanding memories to share? Over the years, Dorchester Collection has grown used to our wild and wonderful requests; from flaming puddings and bringing an African savannah to life, to having guests enter the Ballroom through a 360-degree 80-foot wide painting of the natural world. Each year, The Dorchester team never fails to deliver and impress. A particularly wonderful memory is my grandfather, at the time in his late seventies, brought a functioning miniature Landrover into the Ballroom which was being auctioned off. Having been told not to drive it, he became so excited to show it off he ignored instructions and drove it clean off the stage careering into the tables! Even with the additional dent it went on to help raise vital funds that night to support our work across Africa and Asia. Where do you feel your work is needed most at this time? The current global pandemic has the potential to undo 35 years of DSWF’s unwavering conservation efforts overnight. We cannot let that happen. Our focus is on maintaining support for our ground-based conservation partners.

UZBEKISTAN:
An invitation to dream “Samarkand, the most beautiful face the Earth has ever turned towards the sun,” writer Amin Maalouf once wrote about Samarkand in the eponymous 1988, novel. And, indeed, its beauty continues to inspire such strong emotions today. Assouline Publishing has just released a new must-have book, ‘Uzbeksitan: The Road to Samarkand’ by Yaffa Assouline, photography by Laziz Hamani, dedicated to Uzbekistan, a love letter of sorts from it’s creator, who was fully enamoured by the country’s beauty and warmth, its marvelous architecture, its dazzling naturescapes, and its intricate arts and crafts— and it shows on every page. From Tashkent to Samarkand, Bukhara to Khiva, this rich culture and its spectacular aesthetics have not been going unnoticed. Inspiration abounds as Ikat, traditional Central Asian patterns, have trickled down to every aspect of design: from fashion to books to wallpapers, showing up everywhere from Pierre Frey to Giorgio Armani. The special edition of the book itself features a hardcover and box showcasing these traditional Uzbek textile patterns.
