‘Ars longa, vita brevis’—or “Art is long, life is short” goes the well-known phrase attributed to Hippocrates. This is true, of course, in that artists leave behind legacies lasting longer than they do, but it is also true in the experience of art. It invites us to reflect, step back and feel wonder, appreciate, and let our souls be lifted. This issue of Collect—its name especially suited to its content here—focuses mainly on the subject of art, particularly highlighting many of the collections major fine arts institutions hold or assemble across borders for special exhibitions. By an idea, an artistic journey or an era, curators collect reasons for viewers to take a moment away from the speed of life towards the suspended experience of beauty.

At the centre of London society since it opened in 1931, The Dorchester is set in the heart of Mayfair opposite Hyde Park. The landmark 1930s Art Deco exterior houses a stunning ballroom, refurbished rooms and suites, all of which are tastefully designed with elegant English interiors. The award-winning Dorchester Spa is also one of the city’s ultra glamorous pampering destinations. The hotel’s restaurants and bars rank amongst the city’s best and include The Promenade, The Grill, China Tang, Parcafé and the three Michelin-starred Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester.
Situated in the heart of Mayfair, 45 Park Lane has 45 rooms, including suites all with a view of Hyde Park, and a Penthouse Suite with panoramic views of London. Just steps away from The Dorchester, 45 Park Lane is dynamic in spirit with private dining in the Media Room, a Library, BAR 45 and CUT at 45 Park Lane, the debut restaurant in Europe for Wolfgang Puck, overseen by executive chef, David McIntyre.
Coworth Park is a country house and spa that rewrites the rules. In addition to its 70-bedroom country house, the jewel in the crown amongst Coworth Park’s 16 suites is The Dower House, a three-bedroom private residence that dates back to 1775.
Overlooking the beautiful Tuileries Garden, Le Meurice stands majestically in one of the most stylish Parisian neighbourhoods. Its rooms, decorated in Louis XVI style, as well as its Spa Valmont, offer a sense of calm and luxury in a space where history and the latest fashion trends mingle with perfection. Both offering refined French cuisine, Restaurant le Meurice under Alain Ducasse claims two Michelin stars whilst the stunning, hand-painted ceiling of the recently renovated Restaurant Le Dalí, named after the hotel’s regular guest Salvador Dalí, sets the dramatic tone for an overall heightened experience of excellence.

Best in the World The title is no exaggeration—Jessica Préalpato, head pastry chef at Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée restaurant, is named World’s Best Pastry Chef 2019. A sweet distinction, indeed. buro BELÉN, SUN+, Unseen Glasses. 2012.
essert doyenne Jessica Préalpato is named World’s Best Pastry Chef 2019, the second consecutive head pastry chef at Dorchester Collection to earn the title, with Cédric Grolet of Le Meurice claiming 2018. Granted by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, the award is widely considered the “Oscars” of the restaurant world. Head pastry chef Préalpato is at the forefront of a new kind of pastry-making touching boundaries with classic cookery. “I never wanted to be number one,” the 33-year-old Préalpato recounts in an interview with Elle magazine. “My pastry is different. I cannot compare myself or my desserts and say it is better or not. It is just different.” What she is referring to is both her working philosophy, and her daring technique. In line with industry master Alain Ducasse and chef Romain Meder, her approach celebrates the natural at all levels, keeping food inextricably linked with the seasons and its producers, and sublimating the product in its preparation. She calls her approach “Desseralité”—a blend of words in French mixing Jessica Préalpato, pastry chef at Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée
“dessert” and “naturalness”; it is also the name of her book released last November by Alain Ducasse Editions. Shifting attitudes towards the use of sugar, for example, are in her hands. “If a fruit is quite sweet to start with, like pears can be, it’s not worth adding more sweetness to it. I aim to bring the sugar out of the fruit. Today, sugar is used as a seasoning.” The notion of using the word “seasoning” itself is an example of her free style. Working beyond convention, yet with total mastery of it at the same time, she integrates rare ingredients such as nettle, watercress and fir; alternating between using a barbecue, an oven or a frying pan; and, Jessica adds vinegar and alcohol to play with acidity and bitterness. “The goal is that the customer does not get ‘bored’ during the tasting, that each bite brings him or her new information, a new emotion.” Unchartered territory in pastry-making is on the horizon, and Jessica Préalpato is its principle pioneer with all options before her.

Celebrating 130 Years of Hospitality Many illustrious guests have passed through the doors of Hotel Eden in the heart of Rome. To honour its 130th year, a selection of exceptional experiences pay homage to its past. f only all the eras could speak at once—filmmaker Frederico Fellini conducting an interview from Hotel Eden’s rooftop meanwhile Princess Mary of Bourbon dashing through its doors in her wedding gown upon her nuptials to Prince John of the Asturias. Or is that Sigmund Freud, Ingrid Bergman, or writer Gabriele D’Annunzio passing through its corridors? Hotel Eden’s intersection with culture and history is rich since its opening in 1889 by Munich-born hotelier Francesco Nistelweck. To celebrate its 130-year anniversary, Hotel Eden highlights some of the captivating stories from its past through three crafted experiences: the recreation of a legendary cocktail, the revival of a gourmet recipe, and an embellished spa offer. For a celebrated libation, the Il Giardino Bar serves the heretofore secret cocktail recipe of Royal Eden, a blend of vodka, dry vermouth, Campari, tonic water and orange bitters. It was invented by talented barman Silvio Favot for Constantine II of Greece, and a fast favourite of Queen Mother Federica. Also, a simple yet

ed as a contemporary classic at the Michelin-starred La Terrazza restaurant. Or, is it the Garden of Eden that is calling? An exceptional spa ritual comprises a 130-minute sensory journey— featuring fig fragrance and essential oils of rose and jasmine—inspired by Gabriele D’Annunzio’s master- piece ‘Il Piacere’ dedicated to the pleasures of the senses. At the time of its opening, Hotel Eden was one of the first hotels to be equipped with running water, electricity, heating and even a lift; it quickly became a favourite destination for foreign visitors to Rome. As the headquarters of the British Army Command after the Liberation and a favoured home-away-from-home for Belgian cartoonist Hergé, creator of Tintin (who left a comic book of ‘Tintin and Snowy’ as a gesture of thanks), the walls of Hotel Eden, indeed, have many tales to tell.

Beyond the World We Know The Norton Simon Museum in California assembles an intimate exhibition celebrating abstraction in image-making. he invention of photography sparked a veritable revolution in how we convey information to each other. At last—a medium that mirrored reality, untainted by the subjectivity of the human hand. But, is it? A treasure of an exhibition curated by Gloria Williams Sander, ‘Beyond the World We Know’, assembles silver gelatin prints created by some of the 20th century’s most innovative and experimental photographers pushing the medium’s pictorial pragmatism. Barbara Morgan, Frederick Sommer, Arthur Siegel, Aaron Siskind, Minor White and Edward Weston, amongst others, bend the expectations of a medium esteemed for its ability to record what the eye sees. From complex technical processes such as chemical toning and solarisation to tight cropping of otherwise recognisable, often banal, subjects these photographers have forged a nonrepresentational, visual language that can call to mind the gestural paintings of the Abstract Expressionists. An image target such as a tree, for example, is distanced from recognisable contexts when placed in extreme close-up. As a result, viewers are encouraged to take in the image and see beyond the ostensible subject. When composition, texture, tone and light are handled by artists of great imagination and virtuosity, the simplest subjects become evocative works of art. fter a magnificent sunset (and very likely a wonderful dinner), Paris begins to sparkle—literally, as the Eiffel Tower scintillates every hour, on the hour, like rising bubbles of champagne in the night sky. She is beautiful, Paris, as everyone knows. And, her perfectly suited vantage point is beautiful as well, as her name indeed suggests: the Belle Etoile Suite sitting upon the penthouse heights of Le Meurice. Here, a Parisian paradise is found. The Belle Etoile Suite is a masterpiece of style, craftsmanship and innovation having been freshly and entirely refurbished in collaboration with young design talents, Margaux Lally and Luc Berger of the eponymous Lally & Berger Studio. They worked in collaboration with Le Meurice’s long-time design reference, Charles Jouffre, who is the creator of the opulent drapes at the Opera Garnier. The standalone living space on the seventh-floor penthouse includes up to three connecting bedrooms. Altogether, across suite and garden, it covers an impressive 620 square metres, or 6,674 square feet. Inside, a vision of a modern-day Versailles prevails. Shades of bronze and gold, mixed with the subtle patina of lightly-aged oak compliment lavish furnishings hailing from prestigious houses such as Rubelli, Dedar and Toyine Sellers. Other artisanal touches include Declercq passementiers trimmings, sumptuous Laval furniture, Meljac fittings and bespoke chandeliers by Maison Lucien Gau. Highly-skilled
“What an immense impression Paris made upon me. It is the most extraordinary place in the world!” Charles Dickens French craftsmanship as well as local inspiration is showcased throughout. Artworks by French artist Carole Benzaken hang on the walls and the bespoke staircase, for example, is inspired by the branches of the Tuileries Garden trees dotting the landscape below. The majestic marble bathroom is unlike any in the world—a vast space flooded with natural daylight by its three windowed walls, recalling a winter garden from architecture of former eras. Its comforts inside include a whirlpool bathtub, refinement at every touchpoint and the most incredible views of Montmartre and the Sacré-Coeur. Outdoors, the expansive terrace is a veritable haven in the heart of an urban metropolis, also drawing inspiration from the vista of the Tuileries Garden, one of Le Meurice’s most celebrated neighbours. Renowned landscape designer PierreAlexandre Risser is the creative mastermind behind the garden in his selection of the perfect shapes, textures and beautiful blooms. At once contemporary and classic, the space leaves an impression of seamlessness with the urban grey and greenery below. On a fine day, relaxing within the Belle Etoile Suite may be the only sightseeing needed. Paris is renowned for its unusual skyline—highly preserved throughout the threats of two world wars and remarkably low in height due to strict building regulations. Charlotte Perriand _ A free spirit, wide-open mind and pioneering designer describes Charlotte Perriand, who is also the centrepoint of a major exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuitton this season. Yet it is her intersecting creative exchanges with the leading talents of her time that assembles for the show an impressive collection of works across genres.

Both Bacon and Freud thrived—and lived creatively—in this after-space of
Francis Bacon, wherein literature is placed at its core. Across six rooms, recorded readings play text excerpts taken from Francis Bacon’s library, including the works of Aeschylus, Nietzsche, Bataille, Leiris, Conrad and Eliot. Not only did these authors inspire Bacon’s work and motifs directly, they also shared a poetic world, forming a ‘spiritual family’ the artist identified with. Moreover, these authors shared the same realist outlook, a concept of art and its forms liberated from the a priori of idealism. The exhibition consists of sixty paintings produced by Bacon in the last two decades of his career, starting from the major turning point in his life in 1972. The Wonderful Mr. Walker _ The Victoria & Albert Museum holds the most important photographic collection in the world. This season, it focuses its curatorial lens on the extraordinary work of British photographer Tim Walker in the largest exhibition ever to survey his 25-year career. It also includes over 150 new photographs inspired by the V&A archives, from fashion to rare objects, for a dialogue on par with the ever-imaginative Mr. Walker.

Matisse Made Material _ The fourth generation of Henri Matisse’s descendants are spearheading a new venture in his name: a luxury brand named Maison Matisse that produces decorative objects in honour of the painter’s daring spirit. Timed with the 150th anniversary of Matisse’s birth, a limited-edition collection features pieces created in collaboration with three designers, given carte blanche: Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Jaime Hayon and Alessandro Mendini.
he artwork of Henri Matisse is almost a language unto itself—instantly recognisable in its fresh and joyful visual poetry. Matisse spoke of “an art with balance and purity that doesn’t disquiet or disturb, so that the tired man can enjoy peace and quiet in front of his painting.” The manifestation of these words will now resonate not only within famous artworks of the world’s most important museums and private collections, but also at home through functional objects in living colour. Be it a vase or a centrepiece, Maison Matisse three-dimensional interpretations of his work are ambassadors, moreover, of a creative philosophy that is generous, daring and optimistic. Maison

2020; however, the limited-edition vases, through which elements of Matisse’s work are reinterpreted via guest designers, debuted October 2019 at FIAC, Paris’s leading art fair. French brothers Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec created a series of vases: terracotta, anodised aluminum and glazed ceramics associated in three combinations to reference the image of a window through which one gazes onto a landscape. Spanish designer Jaime Hayon based his three vases on fantastical elements: forms, silhouettes and natural references that conflate and float in a sea of colours. The vases’ unique shapes are inspired by Mediterranean elements appearing in Matisse’s œuvre. And, renowned Milanese designer Alessandro Mendini—part of the Memphis Group and a master of colour—reveals a fascinating study of the complex chromatic system Matisse developed over time, in three vases created with Florentine master craftsman Alessio Sarri. A tribute to an ancestor, a tribute to an artist, Maison Matisse brings an iconic 20th-century painter to the table of our times.
