Monochromatic Life: Framing the Chaos through Color

MONO CHRO MATIC LIFE Framing the Chaos through Color

By Luc Detiger

This is a color study on the objects that come from my chaos (objects in my room and house). I chose to focus on objects that were already in my home, because that to me shouts chaos – my sister’s shoe, a shopping bag, a Bowie-head necklace, some purple cabbage. I then decided to look for one thing that could organize this chaotic group of objects: color. I chose to study color because I think it is something that we see everyday that is somewhat overlooked. United by something as simple as color, each shot shows a new and sometimes unlikely relationship between things. Furthermore, when all the color is the same, we can focus on other differences in the objects like texture, shape, size, etc. Sara Cwynar was my major inspiration for my project. She too does color studies so I mimicked her and took close up shots of some colors of the rainbow; red, yellow, blue, green, pink, orange, purple, and gold. I took these shots up close to focus on the subtle things like texture. In the end I realized that, in their own ways, this is what all art does: frame the chaos.
