Director Alex Kosene Rediscovers

This month, Carmel Monthly is proud to feature Alex Kosene on its cover. Kosene is the director of “Art and Soul: A Portrait of Nancy Noel,” a powerful documentary slated for its world premiere screening on October 7, 2023, at the Heartland International Film Festival. Nancy Noel’s sons, Alex and Michael Kosene, along with fellow collaborators Sami Mustaklem and Amy Pauszek, are sharing Noel’s life and works in a feature-length film that also features many of Noel’s high-profile friends, family members and collectors.

And That’s a Wrap of the Carmel Farmers Market’s 25th Anniversary!

Oh, what a season it has been! As the Carmel Farmers Market summer season comes to a close, Carmel Monthly would like to thank all of the dedicated CFM volunteers, vendors and musicians who made the 25th Anniversary of the summer market exceptional and memorable.

We wrapped up our coverage of this outstanding season by talking with longtime CFM volunteer Jim Burrell. Post-retirement from Carmel Clay Schools, Burrell became a CFM volunteer 24 years ago. You will also see him volunteering at the CFM Winter Market and as an usher at the Center for the Performing Arts.

“I got involved with [the summer market] after my retirement as the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources for Carmel Clay Schools,” Burrell shared. “It all started because Ron and I were at a [Carmel] Rotary lunch and he had talked about the market and how they needed volunteers. And I thought, ‘Well, there’s something I can do,’ and I enjoy being around people. So, I jumped on that summer and have been with [the market] ever since.”

Burrell described the CFM volunteer corps as being a “family” and the summer market being a “social event.”

“We have the amphitheater and music every week,” Burrell said. “We have tables and chairs, which we did not have at the old market location [Carmel City Hall parking lot]. People sit around, listen to music and talk.”

The number of vendors at CFM has grown substantially since it’s first market season 25 years ago, and Burrell shared his thoughts on how he, along with his fellow longtime CFM volunteers, have watched muti-generational families participate at the summer market as vendors and as regular marketgoers.

“The market has grown by a number of vendors,” Burrell acknowledged.

“I remember when Allen Baird’s daughter [Jennifer] first brought the corn to the market in her pickup truck. They started

at our market when it was in front of City Hall. Phelps [Family Farm] was one of our first vendors too.”

When asked what makes CFM unique from other farmers markets in the area, Burrell replied, “We sell ice to our vendors, and we sell it at cost. We’ve been doing that for years, and it helps our vendors so they don’t have to stop at a filling station to get ice in the morning or worry about running out on a hot day. I’ve been known as the ‘Ice Man.’”

to take to maintain the standards of professionalism and excellence that the founding and current CFM have established and maintained. He also expressed that the CFM volunteer corps is welcoming and enjoys bringing new volunteers into its fold.

“It’s a family,” Burrell stated. “We have parties throughout the year that most of us attend, whether it be a Christmas party or a summer party. We have fun times with those. We also have the winter market, so my wife doesn’t see me on Saturday mornings. It’s pretty amazing how many of us show up every week, and there’s a bunch of

Burrell also shared a CFM fun fact: “Did you know each vendor sign has two numbers? One is their booth number, and the other is how many miles they are from our market. You won’t see any over 300 miles … they’re all local!”

All of the many families that we see over and over again, rain or shine, enjoying the market. Our attendance was fabulous, and our volunteers really came to the plate to do our very best.

How does volunteering for the Carmel Farmers Market enrich your life?

Our vendors, at the close of the Market, will have a small amount of product left over. Frequently, produce vendors will generously donate fresh vegetables to the Food Pantry at Carmel United Methodist. It is my gift to deliver the fresh produce to the Food Pantry, bag the vegetables and refrigerate the bags. The real gift comes from our vendors!

What is a market tradition that you hope continues for decades to come?

The tradition of handing out free donuts in memory of Jim Steckley on one of the first days of the market always touches my heart. Jim was one of the founders who started the Market in 1999, and his tradition was to distribute

free donuts on the first day of the Market. It’s a great tradition!

Have you learned something new this year about the market by way of a volunteer or vendor whose story impacted you?

I am impacted every time that I hear the personal story of how a vendor reached the point that they are today. For example, Heather Dame, the owner of Lucky Lemon Bakery, won a $10,000 grant one year ago this week, which has allowed her to attain her wildest business goals. Her story is absolutely amazing.

fter 28 years of visionary leadership from Mayor Jim Brainard, Carmel voters are set to elect their first new mayor in nearly three decades. Carmel voters now have a choice on who can best keep Carmel moving forward.

Miles Nelson has a vision for Carmel and is ready to lead. He is a bipartisan problem solver who is focused on keeping Carmel the best place to live in America. Miles spoke about his plans to build on Mayor Brainard’s legacy, saying, “I want to invest in what makes our community thrive and build a transparent, inclusive and efficient Carmel. I’ll focus on ensuring we protect the existing charm and character of our neighborhoods, defending our nationally ranked

schools, keeping us safe and continuing to invest in our world-class amenities — without raising taxes.”

Miles believes his background as an entrepreneur with decades of experience in business ownership, team development, executive leadership, and nonprofit board service will serve him well as Carmel’s next Mayor. He has deep roots in the community. A lifelong Hoosier, Miles has lived in Carmel with his wife Carolina for nearly 20 years where they have raised their two children, Olivia and Noah. Together with his children, he created the nonprofit Carmel Cleanup Crew and established the 10,000 Trees in Carmel campaign with the goal of planting that many trees in the city in 10 years. To date, more than

4,000 trees have been planted or given away for planting.

As a small business owner, community volunteer and recently elected City Councilor, Miles prioritizes giving back to the place that has given so much to his family. His campaign for mayor is rooted in his “roll up your sleeves and contribute” attitude, which he inherited from growing up in a family where service was encouraged and standing up for one’s principles was demanded.

Miles’ love for Carmel and the people who call it home led him to run and win a seat on the Carmel City Council in 2019. During his time on the council, Miles has worked hard for his constituents, prioritizing their needs and concerns.

Miles believes being Mayor isn’t about playing politics — it’s about being a trusted partner who leads a responsive, efficient, and innovative team of public servants who work hard every day to keep our community thriving. Miles explains, “For me, it’s not about political

party. When my constituents call me, they don’t ask my party affiliation and I don’t ask theirs — they have a problem that they want fixed. It’s why I’ve worked closely with Mayor Brainard and my Republican colleagues to advance the issues most important to my constituents. I know how important it is to put differences aside and put people first.”

Miles firmly believes that all forms of government function best when they’re closely connected to the constituents they serve. That’s why he’s pledged to conduct bi-monthly mobile City Hall events where residents will have the opportunity to connect directly with him and his department heads in neighborhoods around the community. He believes it’s a simple idea to increase transparency, engagement, and accountability.

Over the last four months, Miles has knocked on more than 15,000 doors to speak directly with residents about their concerns and ideas for how to keep Carmel moving forward. He’ll continue

this outreach as Mayor. Miles states, “As I lead the next generation of this city, I want to bring people together around common-sense solutions that improve our quality of life.”

This year, Carmel voters have an important choice in the election for mayor. Miles Nelson is focused on keeping our city the best place to live and raise a family in America. He’ll build on the achievements of Mayor Brainard and keep moving Carmel forward.

Stewart Copeland’s Police Deranged for Orchestra is a high-energy orchestral evening celebrating a career that has spanned more than four decades. Copeland is best known as the founder and drummer of the Police, as well as a seasoned and prolific composer in opera, ballet and orchestral music. Janelle Morrison: Congratulations on your 6th and 7th Grammy Awards for Divine Tides.

Stewart Copeland: The thing that I’m most proud of, more than the number of Grammys, is when — here I am in my 71st year now and I’m still winning Grammys … that’s pretty cool.

JM: Speaking of things that are pretty cool, you did work on the soundtrack for the 1983 film “Rumble Fish,” and the intro to Hostile Bridge to Benney’s, I think, is predominantly a typewriter and maybe a drum loop. My words … that was pure musical genius.

SC: It is one drum break loop! And back in those days, a loop was physically a loop … a 2-inch magnetic tape looped around the studio, joined together into an actual physical loop.

JM: Kids these days just don’t know about those things.

SC: Ha, ha, ha, ha … kids these days don’t know!

JM: Let’s talk about your latest book, “Stewart Copeland’s Police Diaries” [pre-orders available at policediariesbook.com]. I know it’s about the “hungry years,” and I’m curious why you decided to finally write about those.

SC: I kind of screwed up with my first book. I thought that I had it all there from the ex-rockstar life perspective. I thought

it was an interesting story, but what people really want is the Police, so I’m finally “crossing that t and dotting that i.”

JM: The book is based on journals that you wrote back in those years, correct?

SC: Oh yeah, I recorded how much we got paid, how many people showed up, how well we played and all other aspects of the show that I was booking. It’s all there — the contemporaneous observations — because I kept a diary that was facts and data. And then I kept the other [diary], which [includes] my secret

writings for grievance nurturing and for crackpot schemes. [Laughing] You could call it the “Muhahaha Diaries”!

JM: Was there anything, a particular moment or memory, that you thought, “Oh, that’s totally going in the book”?

SC: There were a few, but the biggest one was more of a generality, which was “How did I hold on to those two guys?” Because we were starving! First of all, Sting … we stuck together through thick and thin. Wait … that’s not true. We stuck together through thin and thinner! To get into the “punk” scene, we had to play these crap punk songs that were totally utilitarian and were fundamentally bass lines with yelling. At first, we were having a great time and we were starving, but we were carving it up at these shows. It was tough to keep hold of Sting, musically. He’s a man of great loyalty, but it was a miracle that he stuck with it until the day Andy Summers walked into the room.

We were doing a session and then walked in Andy Summers, the triple scale guitarist, the legend himself. We had been starved of actual music. Driving home, Sting was like, “Oh my God, we’ve got to get Andy in the band!” I was humoring him and was like, “Sure. Yeah, right. It’s never going to happen. Are you kidding me?” And then it did happen. It’s a longer story in the book, but little did we know

that Andy had discovered us. There was this dance going back and forth, and when I ran into Andy, he pulled me into a café and said, “Look, you and that bass player … you’ve got something. But you need me, and I accept.” He [Andy] hates it when I tell that story, but it’s true. And Andy is very direct. So, long story short, I told him, “We haven’t got a record company — the record company is me pretending to be a record company. Agent … that’s me on the phone. Roadies … that would be you.”

As soon as Sting heard what Andy could do on the guitar, that’s when he started writing the songs. Andy joined the Police. A fake punk rock band with no songs — and he threw in his career to join such a thing! I asked him years later, “What were you thinking?” And he said, “I don’t know, mate … I should have stuck with Neil Sedaka!”

JM: What are you most proud of in regard to the Police?

SC: The fact that it was unique. There was no precedent for our band’s sound. And that we quit while we were ahead. We never saw the other side of the parabola.

JM: How is your creative process different when composing for orchestras?

SC: With bands, you find the right musicians, get in a room with them and cool stuff happens. But with the orchs, it’s all homework. I sit here at my home desk, and I agonize over the score. I can’t hear it. I’m just seeing it, and I have to imagine it. It’s a much more engrossing process, is much more challenging, and takes much deeper concentration. Let not the birds sing nor the phone ring because you have lots of plates in the air when organizing the score.

JM: We, the fans, are beyond excited about your upcoming concert in Carmel, Indiana, Police Deranged for Orchestra. How have your audiences been responding to it?

SC: I did think [at first] they might come after me with pitchforks, but so far, it’s been really good, and the orchs love it. I very much include the orchestra in the event, as it’s about the orchestra very heavily. For the audience, they know the songs, and they have so much more emotional impact when you give

it the majesty, the vocabulary and the power of a symphony orchestra. That takes the songs to a new level, and folks are loving it.

JM: And you’ve got three outstanding female lead vocals, correct?

SC: Yes — this was an intellectual decision, because I can’t get some guy up there singing Sting songs. He would get killed, poor bastard. So how about three soul sisters on the mic? That’s a clever idea! So, I orchestrated it, I raised the vocals, I met the ladies and we started doing it, and I was like, “Oh, Jesus Christ — this is incredible! This is the Police sung by the Supremes!” And I discovered a whole new genre that I had missed as a kid. I didn’t get into R&B. I was into Jimi Hendrix, the Doors and anger music. I don’t know why … I was a privileged kid living a pretty good life, but for some reason, Slipknot makes me happy and death metal cheers me up. God knows why! But their three voices are instruments, and they’re so powerful and moving! They are top-line front Los Angeles singers, and they’re really stepping forward.

Carmel Symphony Orchestra Opens Its 2023-24 Season With Great Momentum

As a new season commences for the Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Carmel Monthly is excited to report on the momentum that continues to build from last season under the direction of Artistic Director Janna Hymes. The energy and success of the previous season have set up this upcoming [season] to be as or even more prolific and exceptional for the entire CSO organization.

“The musical programming is really creative and very interesting,” stated CSO executive director Anne Marie Chastain. “Opening night [October 7], we have Gabriela Martinez, who’s an absolute star, and our Masterworks 2: Veteran’s Salute [November 11] is going to be really

interesting. William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 1 ‘Afro-American’ is super fun, and we’re working on some surprises that are to be announced!”

Chastain continued, “One of the concerts that’s selling really well is the ‘Symphony Goes to the Movies’ [February 10]. We’ll be playing along with Charlie Chaplin’s silent film ‘The Kid.’ It’s going to be a great concert, plus Mendelssohn’s ‘Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 63,’ which will be performed during that concert, is just such a beautiful piece. At the end of the [2023-24] season is Masterworks 5: Verdi Requiem — a real showstopper — that will be performed with the Anderson University Choirs [April 13]. That will be a really big concert!”

This season really reflects that, and I encourage anyone who hasn’t heard the Carmel Symphony Orchestra to come out and really lean into that emotional moment that they will have! Enjoy a fantastic evening, have dinner, walk along the Monon and experience Carmel on so many levels!”

Step into the streets of 1920s New York City, where a newspaper boy has a chance encounter with the famous composer George Gershwin. Families can follow their developing friendship as CSO magically weaves Gershwin’s greatest hits into his stories. This afternoon, Gershwin quickly learns that his new friend has musical talents … but can the boy find the magic key to unlock his own musical potential?

CSO WELCOMES MANAMI WHITE

CSO is thrilled to announce the appointment of distinguished violinist and educator Manami White as its new

Concertmaster. White is a seasoned violinist with an impressive array of international and national performances. White brings her extraordinary talent and passion for music to the heart of Indiana’s thriving cultural scene.

Additionally, White’s illustrious career has seen her perform with orchestras, chamber ensembles, and in captivating recital settings around the world. Notably, she serves as the Concertmaster and Associate Director of the Cincinnati Bach Festival and Cincinnati Collegium, positions that underscore her exceptional musical leadership. She is also the Concertmaster of the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Principal Second Violin of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Principal Second Violin of the Cincinnati Bach Ensemble and an associate member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Manami has taken her artistry to international stages as well, having toured with the American Sinfonietta.

It is always a pleasure and privilege to interview the Civic Theatre’s Executive Artistic Director Michael Lasley and the casts of any Civic production. Lasley and the cast of The Prom — that includes his wife, Marni Lemons —shared some of their thoughts on performing this specific musical and on working with Civic.

“I’ve been here for almost 34 years,” Lasley shared. “During the bulk of that time, we sort of told the same stories over and over again. It wasn’t until 2015 that we had an opportunity to make a major change [at Civic]. I know where I am and who my audience is, and no human being on the face of the earth has ever changed their mind because someone stood in their face and screamed at them. We may not change anyone’s mind … that’s not why we’re doing this [theater]. We’re doing this to

give someone else a voice that doesn’t have one. You can’t approach what we do as validating or invalidating anybody’s point of view, whether it’s somebody in the audience or a character on the stage. They [the characters] were written that way for a reason by somebody, and the honest performer is a person who is willing to put their depth of soul into what they’re doing on stage.”

DEE DEE ALLEN − MARNI LEMONS

This is my 40th anniver sary year, and I’ve done about 40 shows with Civic. Civic allows someone like me who is an amateur performer, but I don’t like the “A” word — amateur — because of what it connotes. I consider myself a professional [actor], but I choose to do it and not be paid. Civic allows me to perform in a 100 percent

professional atmosphere with the level of tech and support that you can’t find in other community theaters.

My character is an aging Broadway diva who’s never been afraid of homosexuals … they’re her biggest fans! But Dee Dee is very ignorant and has awful prejudice against the folks in the small town. What I bring to the show is an extreme and humorous view to help people understand we ALL need to do a better job of understanding each other, all the way around.

Everybody has their own stuff that they’re living through.

EMMA NOLAN − KELSEY MCDANIEL

This is actually my first show with Civic. I’m excited to be playing Emma. She is so courageous to be “out” in a town that is so conservative, and frankly, no one likes her or agrees with her lifestyle. I think it’s especially important because the story takes place in Indiana. With all the laws that are being passed — the anti-gay and anti-trans bills— it’s so important for this story to be told now. I think people need to listen, understand and start to grow. I hope that people who don’t agree with what we’re doing come to the show and maybe start to change the way they think. And maybe feel a little more accepting of people. It’s been fun stepping into a different role and finding parts of the character that are

show] feeling that they’re not alone, because they aren’t. I hope they can walk away with a feeling of acceptance. I have brought some of my personal emotions and experiences from my younger days into this character. Barry is an emotional rollercoaster, so it’s very challenging, as an actor, to be able to portray that, but I’m certainly giving it my best shot!

ALYSSA GREENE − KAYLEE JOHNSON-BRADLEY

I’m happy to be here. This is my first [Civic] show. Alyssa is this character who has this front up of being perfect. I can relate to that a lot, just going through life and trying to be perfect at everything: the arts, student council and all of that stuff. I think Emma helps her with that a lot, but I also think Alyssa is terrified of becoming Emma because Emma is an outcast and is seen as a failure. So, the question for Alyssa is: Is she willing to lose the person she loves to remain “perfect”? That’s been really interesting

to tackle. I hope that by the end of the show, people can come out feeling like they can be themselves and be perfectly imperfect.

NICK − ANDREW KING

This is my first [Civic] show, and I am very excited that I get to be a part of this show and am getting to work with the adults who have done theater a lot and are really good. Me getting to just be here is so fun because I get to learn and watch and do, and it’s just incredible.

This show is hilarious, and there are so many hilarious parts, but then [the show] is real. The stuff we’re laughing at, the jokes, is so funny, but then I’m like, “People are actually out there thinking like this.” I think it’s very important that we get to put this show on in such a way that it’s not just right in [the audience’s] faces but we can also mix that lighthearted feel — like the jokes and stuff — while also incorporating the real-world problems in it.

Rediscovers His Mother, Nancy Noel, in a Documentary Film

This month, Carmel Monthly is proud to feature Alex Kosene on its cover. Kosene is the director of “Art and Soul: A Portrait of Nancy Noel,” a powerful documentary slated for its world premiere screening on October 7, 2023, at the prestigious Heartland International Film Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. A second showing will take place on October 13, and locations/ticket information is now available at hiff2023.eventive.org.

Nancy Noel’s sons, Alex and Michael Kosene, along with fellow collaborators Sami Mustaklem and Amy Pauszek, are sharing Noel’s life and works in a feature-length film that also features many of Noel’s high-profile friends, family members and collectors. Additionally, “Art and Soul” will be submitted to international film festivals, art gallery exhibits and women’s conferences.

Noel resided in Zionsville, Indiana, until her passing in 2020, though her philanthropic efforts knew no borders. Noel’s catalog of artwork and her generosity had immeasurable impacts on the local, national and global communities that she developed deeply rooted bonds with throughout her lifetime.

A BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF THE DOCUMENTARY

The documentary is a journey into the mind and spirit of Noel, who created not just paintings but a life that became her art’s inspiration.

16, 2020, she sat down with her son Alex for an audio interview. This documentary is a precious collection of interviews with Noel, archived video and photos of Noel’s expansive library of original works and newly recorded interviews with Noel’s family, friends, fans and collectors.

It will also utilize many events and institutions around Indianapolis for opportunities to screen the film, including documentary screening to classical scores by Carmel Symphony Orchestra Artistic Director Janna Hymes.

MEET THE CREATIVE TEAM

Producer Amy Pauszek has worked as a key producer and publicist on several award-winning feature films, shorts, TV shows and commercials. She’s also a freelance photographer for magazine and newspaper publications and for local and syndicated television productions.

Throughout her career, Pauszek has been intentional about the projects on which she works, and this particular documentary on Noel is no exception.

“My goal as a filmmaker is to make documentary films that truly make a difference,” Pauszek expressed. “I want to make films that highlight individuals who are or have done extraordinary things, and when people leave the theater after watching [the film], they are inspired and feel empowered. It’s important to me that the documentaries I am involved with offer education and a new dimension or take on life. ‘Art and Soul’ will give viewers a whole new perspective on Nancy Noel. With this feature documentary, Alex and Sami have been

multiple roles of content creation from writing, directing and editing films to producing and developing original ad campaigns as a partner at 3rd Strand Productions. Mustaklem’s works also include short films, TV documentaries, music videos, masterclasses and more.

Mustaklem met the Kosene brothers years ago in Zionsville, Indiana. Mustaklem’s parents owned and operated Zorbas, which used to be located off Main Street in the early 2000s.

Mustaklem shared how daunting it is to be charged with editing an astronomical bounty of footage, interviews and photos related to Noel and her expansive collection of original art into a manageable timeframe conducive to a feature-length documentary.

“There’s a lot of editing that’s a bit of a black box,” Mustaklem explained. “You don’t know what you’re going to put into it, and all you know is that there will be an output. The [editing] process is not that dissimilar from the way that Nancy talked about creating her paintings. My favorite story of hers was when she told me about her painting ‘Sitting Bull.’ She said she turned off the lights and painted. When she turned the lights back on, there he was. And when it comes to the act of editing, it’s a similar process. With this documentary, it’s more like writing a story. With all of the different interviews and images that we have at our disposal, there’s just so much to play with and so many talking points to engage. It’s sort of beautiful in the way that it [the creative

process] doesn’t work until the rhythm kicks in, and once you figure out [the film’s] rhythm, it all just suddenly works.”

Director Alex Kosene has worked in Hollywood, sports television, independent films and advertising. He is the founder of 3rd Strand Productions, a video production company based in Brooklyn, New York. For the last 30 years, Kosene has had the privilege of writing stories about his mother, Nancy Noel.

Kosene spoke about the genesis of the documentary and about this incredible team that is making it all possible along with the support of many individuals, organizations and supporters of his late mother.

“This film is a continuation of a project we started in late 2020 into ’21, which was a short film about Nancy for her Celebration of Life event,” Kosene shared. “It was part of an exhibition at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. I think, at that time, Sami and I thought there was a feature-length film there to explore, but I don’t know that we had any intentions of really producing a film this soon. The reason why we are doing this [film] right now is really because of Amy [Pauszek] and because of her belief in the film. She really was the catalyst of this documentary. And Sami said this could be really cool, that my mother was really inspirational to people, and I have a lot of great footage. We realized that what we had in 10 minutes [of the short film] could be over an hour and still be really entertaining and dive deeper into those things that people may want to know about my mother that I take for granted because I grew up with her. I still find her mysterious, but not nearly as mysterious as people who knew of her.”

and Kathy Pierle are producers on an executive level and are responsible for helping us access a lot of the archival materials, providing interviewees and donations that we’ve needed to make the film. Michael is a successful entre preneur and is making it possible for us to do what we do, in terms of assets and resources. And Kathy — who was my mother’s everything for 35 years — is essential to Michael and I having anything to do with my mother’s business and her art.”

When asked what the most rewarding part about directing this documentary has been, Kosene thoughtfully replied, “We’re unpacking those chapters of her life and those interests of hers, whether it was Africa, the Amish, her own spirituality, and all of these things, as you know, when you sat down with Nancy, you’d experience a shift in perspective because of the way she talked about these things. Nancy had her own perspective that was unique. She was passionate and engaging. And I think that’s part of what is going to come through this documentary. It’s a deeper dive into Nancy Noel’s view of the world and how she created her artwork.”

Kosene concluded, “The most gratifying part of this journey, so far, has been me sitting down and asking people about their experiences with Nancy — hearing stories that I’ve never heard before. I get to rediscover my mother again … which is really exciting.”

Although tax dollars support basic library expenses, such as library collections, staff salaries and building upkeep, a need exists to develop and maintain quality programs and services for the Carmel community.

The Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation’s support makes it possible for the library to present the important programs that patrons have grown to know and appreciate.

From story times and reading programs to musical performances and guest lectures, the library’s educational and entertaining programs are offered free of charge thanks to the Foundation’s generous donors. The dedicated members of the CCPL Foundation Guild support the Foundation each year by hosting the ever-popular Book and Author Luncheon in October.

THE GUILDED LEAF

Hosted by the CCPL Foundation Guild, the Guilded Leaf is the Foundation’s signature annual fundraising event and helps support the library’s programs for all ages. Join us as we welcome six nationally recognized authors to Carmel.

The Book & Author Evening is a sophisticated event that will take place at the Main Library on Wednesday, October 18. It will feature book talks, signings, an online silent auction, appetizers, wine and craft beer.

At the Book and Author Luncheon on Thursday, October 19, at the Ritz Charles, the authors will share insights into their

lives and their writing. A raffle, online silent auction and book signings will also take place at the luncheon.

CCPL Foundation Director Elizabeth Hamilton spoke about this year’s diverse group of authors.

“They’re all great storytellers,” Hamilton said. “They’re super interesting, and many of the stories this year are super personal. It’s a great group of authors.”

The 19th Annual Book & Author Evening is officially sold out. Hamilton shared with us how this event has become the “Zoobilation of Carmel.”

“Once it was announced that the tickets [for the evening event] were available [for] pre-sale, they were sold out before they were open to the [general] public,” Hamilton explained. “If you want to be part of this evening event next year, you have got to get on the mailing list … now. It’s a hot ticket!”

SUPPORTING THE FOUNDATION THAT SUPPORTS ESSENTIAL PROGRAMS

Since the reopening of the library, post-renovation/expansion, Hamilton shared that CCPL has continued to build upon its already expansive list of programs.

“We have the opportunity to bring so much more to the community because we have more space,” Hamilton stated. “And our programming budget continues to grow because our librarians are listening to the community and to what they need and want. If you look at the breadth and depth of the programs that we’re offering, it is truly unbelievable. And we’re averaging about 45,000 people walking through our doors on a monthly basis since we reopened! The number of people that we touch through programming, our collections and our librarians that we have on staff is incredible. For example, one of our teen librarians started a book club with teens called Overbooked. The things that are happening in this building are magic, and the message to me, this year, is: ‘You have to be a part of this!’”

Hamilton continued, “I hope everyone who lives and works in this community sees that and wants to be a part of who we are, because they are who we are here for. We do what we do to make a difference, and when we have a facility like this, we are able to bring in the authors

Dear Carmel Residents, Our city is consistently ranked as one of the best cities in the country to live, work and raise a family. As the #1 Safest Suburb in Indiana and the #1 Most Affordable Safe Suburb in the country, we have a lot to be proud of as a community. I am running for City Council to keep Carmel headed in the right direction. These accolades would not be possible without our dedicated public safety team, worldclass amenities and strong economy. If elected to the Carmel City Council, I will prioritize transparency, fiscal responsibility, quality of life and smart, responsible development. a world-class quality of life for residents in our community is a top priority of mine for the city council. Since I joined the Parks and Recreation Board in 2010, we have added more than 100 acres of land to Carmel Clay Parks. I am also a strong advocate for a complete city asset inventory, which will help us develop a long-range financial plan to ensure our streets, sidewalks, parks and entertainment amenities remain topnotch.

I also recognize the importance of protecting the look and feel of our city, even with all the economic growth and development we have seen over the years. Although development in our community is a great thing, I do have concerns about density and future projects and would like to approve a study to look at how to best move forward with development and housing. I believe resident input will be crucial to deciding what the housing needs are in our community.

Another major priority I have for our city is to continue supporting our public safety departments. As Carmel

continues to grow, our Police and Fire Departments need to grow with it. I support our public safety teams and have been endorsed by both the Carmel Police Officers and the Carmel Firefighters. If elected, I will ensure that they have the proper tools, training, staffing and support they need to keep Carmel residents safe.

Transparency in government is critical to the success of any community. I am a longtime supporter of strong municipal oversight and responsive elected leaders. Our elected leaders must listen to constituents, respond to their questions or concerns, and incorporate residents’ input when making decisions for the future of our city.

With my extensive background in municipal finance, I understand how important it is to reduce debt and make responsible investments while maintaining low taxes for residents. Carmel currently has one of the lowest tax rates in the state. Since joining the Parks and Recreation Board, one of my goals was to ensure that costs remained at a

responsible level. I am proud to say that only 17% of our park operating budget is funded by taxpayers, and the Monon Center has used zero taxpayer dollars to pay for its operations since I was appointed 13 years ago.

Most of all, I want to ensure that Carmel remains one of the best places to live in the country. My wife Lauren and I have lived in Carmel for 18 years and have been blessed with two beautiful children, aged 8 and 4. As a husband and father, I want my family to live in a safe community and for my children to have access to some of the best schools in the state and country. Carmel has done a tremendous job of providing this for me and my family, and I will work to ensure that our city continues to thrive for years to come.

“I’ve had a passion for hair and beauty since childhood,” Shadley shared. “I stayed true to that passion by working in salons during high school. Later, I pursued higher education and earned a master’s degree in accounting. But my heart led me back to my true calling, so I enrolled in cosmetology school. While there, I realized my dream was to own a salon. Armed with both business knowl-

edge and cosmetology skills, I embarked on a journey.”

Most of Shadley’s career was spent on the brand side of the industry.

“I worked for Aveda and Kenra Professional, where I met my husband, who handled digital marketing for Kenra,” Shadley said. “I relocated to Indy [where Kenra was headquartered], and soon after, Kenra moved to Los Angeles. As newlyweds wanting to start a family, we didn’t feel L.A. was the right fit for us.”

Shadley added, “My husband and I had a heads-up about our job relocation, which gave us time to plan. In 2018, I seized the opportunity and opened a Pure Barre studio. Having been a Pure Barre client in North Carolina, I opened a down -

town location, which quickly became a success. I expanded with another Pure Barre in Noblesville and acquired one in Fishers. Over the next five years, I managed these three locations.”

“During COVID, we weathered the storm well, but like everyone else, it allowed us time to reflect on the next chapter of our lives,” Shadley said. “For me, it meant returning to the beauty industry, business ownership and working with female teams. I worked with over 100 female employees at Pure Barre.”

Shadley continued, “I loved the concept of Blo, which led me to open a location in Fishers over 18 months ago. This location won ‘New Location

of the Year’ last year for Blo Corporate and is thriving. I’ve also acquired a location in Chicago, and now, I just opened in Carmel, making this my third location. In the past year, I sold all the Pure Barre studios.”

The space exudes a bright, airy and contemporary ambiance, punctuated by the brand’s signature pink accents. Considerable attention has been given to elevating the guest experience, evident in the installation of ergonomic wash stations that invite guests to unwind and recline while having their hair pampered. “We also specialize in special events like prom and bridal styling, makeup applications and extensions,” Shadley explained. “When you visit Blo, it resembles a traditional salon, but we focus exclusively on styling and makeup services. We also do offer both ready-towear and semi-permanent extension services with Glam Seamless extensions. Many of our members jump at the opportunity to get their extensions done with us because we can wash and blow out their extensions out once a week, taking the hassle out of daily styling and providing regular professional upkeep.”

Shadley concluded, “My team consists of incredibly talented artists, and it’s

them work. We offer convenient appointments and have a membership program, with many clients coming in weekly or bi-weekly. We cater to brand-new moms who finally get some time for themselves, as well as working women who multitask on their laptops while we provide a wash, blow, and go service. This includes a shampoo, blow dry, and styling of the client’s choice, with five signature styles available, from smooth and sleek to beach waves or glamorous ’90s Hollywood or supermodel looks.”
