SUPPORTING LOCAL FARMERS’ MARKETS FUELS THE SUSTAINABILITY MOVEMENT

Supporting local farmers’ markets plays a vital role in the sustainability movement. By purchasing locally grown produce at the Carmel Farmers Market, you reduce the environmental impact of long-distance food transportation and promote eco-friendly farming practices. Additionally, it fosters a stronger local economy and encourages the preservation of green spaces, all while enjoying fresh, seasonal products that contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

URBAN AWARENESS GARDENS

Jason Michael Thomas, owner of Urban Awareness Gardens in downtown Indianapolis, creates elegant, 100% locally farmed and foraged dinners in a private, urban setting. Leveraging his television appearances and social media influence, he educates the public on the vital importance of the sustainable food movement. Thomas also promotes a healthy lifestyle by teaching others how to seek out the most natural and flavorful local foods. Thomas has also been a vendor at CFM since 2020. Though he won’t be participating in this year’s Winter Market in Carmel, he encourages everyone to come out and support the local farmers, many of whom he also supports and knows by name.

A NATIVE HOOSIER WITH A PENCHANT FOR HEALTHY FOOD

Thomas began his food industry career at 15, working as a busboy at The South Bend Country Club and eventually becoming a grill cook before attending the University of Notre Dame. His time studying gastronomy and wine in France opened his eyes to the inequalities of the industrial food system, inspiring him to

bridge the gap between farm and table by creating Urban Awareness Gardens in downtown Indianapolis.

A dedicated advocate of the sustainable food movement and regenerative agri culture, Thomas sources and forages any produce and protein he doesn’t grow himself from local purveyors. Every event he hosts features beautifully crafted dishes made from ingredients he personally cultivates, including 60 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, berries and fruit trees.

the impact of supporting local farmers vs. corporate farms, and basic growing skills for whatever space they are working with—urban, suburban, rural.

ADVOCATING FOR FOOD SUSTAINABILITY

When asked how we as a community can support local, micro and urban farmers and assist with the food sustainability movement, Thomas replied, “I tell everybody to go to the farmers’ markets and get to know your farmers. They’re proud of what they do, and they can explain their practices in a way that makes sense. You’re not going to get that at the grocery store… you’re being told likes in the marketing and the greenwashing.”

Thomas added, “If, for some reason, you can’t make it to the market on a Saturday morning, I will be happy to deliver.

“I do think people should receive an education on how to grow food,” Thomas expressed. “I think this should be part of the public school curriculum because it has an equalizing factor in our society—especially now. The first step in this education should be to define what healthy foods are. Additionally, we should support small farms as much as we possibly can. I’m not saying we should abandon the industrial model immediately. In fact, I think we should take our industrial and technological prowess and apply it to doing things that we know is the healthiest way to do them.”

Thomas continued, “Once in a while, we get the people who say, ‘You can’t feed the world without pesticides,’ and I tell them that I’ve got a small group of people doing a lot that shows you can,

but they lack the support and demand, and it is a pricier product. We know that our country has plenty of tax dollars, and whether the government chooses to spend it on other things that are arguably necessary or not, I think we could allocate a little bit more to the local [agricultural] infrastructure that is true security for our food, our farmers and our rural communities as well.”

Thomas explained that we are just 36 hours from a food crisis in this country and reminded us that we got a sample of that during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

“I believe that people should always have the right to grow their own food and raise chickens,” Thomas emphasized. “We are nine meals and three days from absolute anarchy. If there was a fuel shortage, the grocery stores have three days of stock, and that would be gone in one day if people knew something was wrong. It’s far past time to really invest in our local [agricultural] infrastructure. To me, it’s about shifting back to nature. Again, I don’t think we can just abandon

all of our technology… it’s amazing what we can do. Let’s just take another look at it, step back and try to imitate what nature already does.

“I don’t claim to be an expert farmer,” Thomas added, “but I have become an expert urban farmer and know what to do with two-thirds of an acre. We’ve got a lot going on downtown, and for the people that say we can’t feed the world… I’m pretty sure that if we had [an urban] farm on every block, that would be a good start. There’s a lot that can happen in a small space.”

CERESET IN CARMEL UNLOCKS THE POWER OF BRAIN BALANCE FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH

Life’s stresses can go beyond mere disruption — prolonged stress can profoundly affect both your brain and body, leading to serious health issues. As the brain serves as your central command center, any imbalance or dysfunction can leave you feeling off and prevent you from performing at your best. Cereset offers a proven, noninvasive solution to help your brain restore its natural balance. By empowering the brain to reset itself, Cereset enables you to experience improved well-being and achieve greater balance in your life.

THE KEY TO A BALANCED BRAIN

Brenda Hanning, owner and Cereset Tech Coach in Carmel, shares the inspiration behind the development of Cereset, a breakthrough technology designed to naturally balance the brain. Unlike other brain relaxation and sleep technologies, Cereset was developed with the understanding that the brain holds the key to the body’s well-being.

Hanning emphasized that Cereset stands apart by allowing the brain to heal itself rather than imposing external stimuli or manipulations.

When asked what inspired the development of Cereset and how it differs from other brain relaxation and sleep technologies, Hanning explained, “The founder of Cereset, Lee Gerdes, suffered from a brutal attack in 1992. Four youths attacked him, one with a baseball bat. For eight years, he sought help for PTSD,

anxiety, insomnia and fits of anger that he suffered from after the attack. Nothing he did was lasting or impactful, so he decided to ‘hack’ his own brain.”

Hanning continued, “Using his background in math, physics, psychology, theology and computer software, he discovered a way to relax and reset his brain. Over time, with research and development, it led to the patented Cereset technology we have today.”

MANAGING STRESS AND IMPROVING RESTFUL SLEEP

Using noninvasive technology that mirrors brainwave patterns, Cereset promotes deep relaxation and restores balance. This leads to more restful sleep and enhanced mental, emotional and physical well-being.

“Cereset helps the brain from the inside out,” Hanning said. “Other modalities are from the outside in and just manage symptoms. Cereset does not force the brain or

use medication or stimulation, and there is no learner in the loop. The wellness technology simply reflects the brain back to itself through engineered tones, and as the reflection happens in real-time, the brain responds by relaxing, resetting and reorganizing itself so that it can better regulate energy, mood, [cope] with stress, sleep, cognitive abilities, healing and all other downstream processes. The brain has information about the whole body, which is why when we cut our finger, it heals, but the brain does not have information about itself. Cereset provides that information to the brain through the engineered tones.”

WHAT CLIENTS EXPERIENCE DURING A CERESET SESSION

Cereset clients find sessions to be very relaxing.

“Clients comfortably recline in a zero-gravity chair with Cereset EEG sensors on their head,” Hanning stared. “We provide earphones, and clients can relax or sleep while the software selects and sends the special tones through the earbuds that are custom to the client’s brain in that moment in time. All clients start with five Cereset sessions. Based on the client, they might have two sessions a week or just one session a week for five weeks. Many clients choose to have periodic tune-ups over time to support their brains. Some clients with deep-set trauma or stress patterns may need ten to 15 sessions to fully reset their brain.”

CLINICAL STUDIES WITH REAL RESULTS

Clinical studies support the effectiveness of Cereset in helping people achieve natural brain balance.

Hanning said, “Cereset has real clinical research with real results. All press releases and peer-reviewed research papers can be found at our website cereset.com. Any child or adult who has experienced trauma or stress can benefit from Cereset. Senior citizens looking to improve focus and mental clarity can benefit from our Anti-Aging and Mental Clarity designs. Anyone suffering from long Covid should give Cereset a try as well. Cereset is for anyone looking for better brain health.”

Hanning concluded, “Cereset offers an introduction session for $99. This gives clients an opportunity to have a base-

line assessment of the stress center and emotional center of their brain to see if they are in a stuck stressed state. During the intro session, we will answer all their questions and get to know them so that we can give them an idea of how many sessions they may need.”

Say yes to restored health and a return to restful nights! If you are seeking a balanced brain, Cereset can help… wellness from the inside out!

I have suffered over seven concussions in my lifetime. Most of them were minor incidents from a bump on the head doing housework or playing at the dog park. Ironically, the most catastrophic concussion occurred when my four-year-old nephew head-butted me in the left temple. From that point forward, my brain changed. I began experiencing post-concussive disorder in 2017.

I tried multiple modalities for relief, attempting to heal my brain and provide the groundwork for it to rewire itself. Eye movement therapy helped. Craniosacral therapy provided me with short-term benefits. I continued, however, to face daily fatigue, misophonia, vision problems and issues with short-term memory.

I Googled “new technology for concussions and brain therapies” and found the Cereset website, along with several scientific studies explaining the process. As a former medical writer, the science mattered to me. I was intrigued by the concept of neurofeedback and intuitively felt that if my brain could listen to itself, it might recover.

After two series of sessions with Brenda, I have experienced significant improvement in my symptoms. My disrupted brain rhythms are correcting themselves. My peripheral vision has improved, along with my energy levels and daily mood. The lobes of my brain are working to put themselves back into harmony. I am eager to continue treatment, and I would urge people to consider this treatment modality like they would any wellness tool.

Cereset presents clients with a unique tool to overcome not only the physical imbalances within the brain but all that follows from a neurological health standpoint. Mood, sleep, learning, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and yes, traumatic brain injury respond to the soft tones created by our own brainwaves. Don’t hesitate to add this deeply relaxing and renewing treatment to your mental conditioning routine.

Relax your brain. Reset your life.

Cereset® helps your brain relax and reset itself, enabling you to achieve higher levels of well-being and balance throughout your life.

JACOB BUTLER AS CHARLIE PRICE

My first show at Civic was in 2017. I was Joseph in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Michael [Lasley] texted me and said I should audition for Joseph, and I did. That’s how I got involved with Civic. I’ve been involved in other ways, helping with video production, and during

the pandemic, I was in a couple of the [“Ghost Light”] cabaret fundraisers.

Charlie is fascinating to me … he’s growing up, and his dad is prepping him to take over the factory, laying the groundwork for what he’s being raised to do, and then he finds Nicola, who is doing the same thing but in a different direction. He never really thinks about himself, and it’s not until he’s thrust back into the factory that he thinks about what he wants, who he is and how he can help the people around him. Charlie’s throughline is until he figures out who he is, he cannot accept the people around him. I hope people will walk away from these performances being willing to engage with people they don’t know and learn more about a group of people they’re not necessarily comfortable with. It’s a very timely show, and it’s a good time in our country to be sharing this story.

JONATHAN STUDDARD AS LOLA/SIMON

I started at Civic in 2017 and was in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” along with Jacob [Butler]. Civic has become my second family, and it’s been beautiful. I’ve done “Elf” three times here, and my all-time favorite show is “The Color Purple” — the first all-Black production at Civic in 30 years [2021]. I’m thrilled to be doing “Kinky Boots” for a second time… I’ve done it before with Jacob two years ago, so I’m excited to take another dip into Lola. Lola is very large and in charge. She commands the stage and the room, and I feel like that’s me to a tee! I think there’s so much of the heart of Lola that we end up getting to see in “Not My Father’s Son.”

In my opinion, theater is the most transformative art form, and while I think people come to the theater to be entertained, I also think they should be challenged. I want people to be able to leave, and once the “high” has come down, I hope that people will think about some things that they might struggle with. I hope they say, “Is there a group of people that I look at differently because I don’t understand them, or do I just need to have more conversations with people, or is it something I need to research”? I think it’s about people finding their own personal journeys with what this show means to them and how it applies to their lives.

BRAXTON HISER AS NICOLA

I’m fairly new at Civic as far as performing goes. It was actually Marni [Lemons] who encouraged me to get involved and audition for “Anastasia” [2024]. I was thinking about competing for Miss Indiana USA [as former Miss Indiana 2021], and thanks to Marni, I got back to being involved in and reigniting my love for theater.

Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Joshua Hasty

As for my character, Nicola is fun to play. She knows what she wants and has this vision of her life. She wants to move to London, get married and live out this dream of hers, but her fiancé has a different idea of what he wants to do and hasn’t been very clear with her about it. She is a “baddy” and wants designer shoes and this posh life. She wants to get out of the small town that she’s grown up in, and I can kind of resonate with that. I know one day, I would love to move to Chicago or New York [City], and I totally get Nicola’s vibe.

I want people to leave [the show] being open to love people for who they are. I work for a church, and my church is all about loving people well … it’s our motto. I want people to come and love people for who they are. That’s what our world needs. We just need people to be loved and to feel seen.

KELSEY MCDANIEL AS LAUREN

I started with Civic last year during “The Prom” [2023]. I’m lucky to have found Civic … it’s such a great community and a great group of people. I’m fortunate that I get to perform here. I’m playing Lauren. She’s super fun to play! I find a lot of similarities to myself in her.

She’s kind of me as a character. She’s funny, witty, quirky and sometimes awkward, especially when it

comes to men. She has a bad history with boyfriends, but she’s also very strong and smart. She’s unapologetically herself, which is something I strive to be in real life. I always enjoy going to the theater and looking up on the stage to find someone who looks like me. Finding someone who’s representative of a different body type, skin color or whatever is such an awesome feeling. I think it is important that we have a lot of different people represented in this show, and I hope people come and find themselves on stage in at least one of the characters.

DIRECTOR SUZANNE FLEENOR

I am insanely proud of the nucleus of people in this show that I have savored working with. I admire

CAST LIST

their talents, authenticity, professionalism and their commitment to the ideal of the show. My journey with Civic started when it was in its second location on Alabama Street when I was in fourth grade, and now, I’m in 224th grade [laughing].

Marni [Lemons] and I spent the better part of the ’80s doing shows at Civic, which was just absolutely terrific. I have directed a number of YAP [Young Artists Program] and mainstage productions at Civic. It is a great joy! What Michael Lasley [Civic’s Executive Artistic Director] has done for Civic, its volunteers, actors and staff is immeasurable. It contributes to its stellar reputation in the community. Civic is committed to making genuine outreach to not only this [Carmel] community but the community at large throughout the metropolitan area.

BONEY JAMES: SLOW BURN TOUR

THE PALLADIUM // SATURDAY, NOV 2, 8 P.M. ET

Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Describe The Fauna

Saxophonist and composer Boney James returns to the Palladium for an evening of R&B-inflected jazz. James was a sideman for such artists as Morris Day and the Isley Brothers before launching a solo career that has sent 11 albums to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Among other honors in the course of his career, he has received a Soul Train Award, four Grammy Award nominations and two NAACP Image Award nominations. His new release, “Slow Burn,” includes contributions from bassist Marcus Miller, trumpeter Rick Braun and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jairus Mozee

Purchase your tickets at thecenterpresents.org!

Janelle Morrison: We are thrilled that you are coming back to Carmel, Indiana. Thank you for including us on this new tour!

Boney James: I’m excited about this [tour] because I love the new music so much, and I’m super proud of it. I’m also excited about coming to Carmel because, honestly, [the Palladium is] one of my favorite venues in the country. It’s such a beautiful place. I always say it looks like a wedding cake on the inside.

The last time we played that venue, it was completely sold out, and the band and I still talk about that night and how the energy was just so crazy. We’re really excited about coming back!

JM: Let’s talk about the brand-new album “Slow Burn” that’s coming off the tail end of your 18th album “Detour” [2023-24] tour. You have a history of wonderful collaborations, and “All I Want is You” with October London is a masterpiece. What is it about this [collaboration] that you are most excited about?

BJ: The first time I heard his voice, which was on the radio just randomly driving in my car last year, I was really taken with it and how wonderful of a singer [London] is. I was really excited when I found out that he is a fan of mine and was interested in coming together and co-writing this song with me. The lyrics and melody that he came up with are just amazing, and his vocals are amazing. I think it’s one of my favorite vocal songs that I’ve ever done. I think [London] is a special talent… he’s got an

old-school voice in a young man’s body. He really brings it, and the way that the sax and the vocal melds together in this particular song is unusually cool.

JM: With regards to the evolution of your sound and music, how have you been able to evolve throughout your career while staying true to your roots?

BJ: I keep practicing as part of it, I think. I practice every day, and I’m always trying to improve my sound. I think a huge part of playing the saxophone is to have a sound that’s unique to you. I listen to my first few records, and I hear some things that I like, and then I listen to my stuff now, and it still sounds like me but better, so I feel like I might be doing something right.

JM: Who were some of your biggest influences when you were just starting out?

BJ: When I was a kid, I listened to the radio a lot. It was sort of a renaissance of R&B at the time. Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder and all these great artists were

making these incredible records that still stand out today. I think it’s some of the best music ever made. So, I was listening to that and simultaneously picked up the saxophone. Then I heard Grover Washington, Jr. in 1975, and that was the first cat that I heard who was combining the kind of R&B groove that I loved and sort of song-oriented melodic approach with the saxophone that I also loved, and that’s kind of the tradition that I’m carrying on today.

JM: We’re going to elevate the energy that you felt the last time you per formed in the Palladium, and in the meantime, can you share what you hope the audience will experience when you come out to Carmel this November?

BJ: The thing that I love about live per formances is that it’s a feeling that I can’t replicate. The music in that moment and the communication between myself, the band and the audience… we’re all sharing this experience, and it’s a very powerful thing. It can be transcendent if we’re doing things right. And that’s what we’re going to go for!

Carmel Christkindlmarkt Is a

Hub for ImmersionCultural

The Carmel Christkindlmarkt has become more than just an award-winning seasonal attraction—it’s a vibrant hub for cultural immersion and an inclusive venue for both visitors and residents. Rooted in the rich traditions of Germany’s holiday markets, the Christkindlmarkt offers an authentic experience that goes beyond festive entertainment, introducing visitors to German heritage and customs in a meaningful way.

Carmel Christkindlmarkt CEO/ President Maria Adele Rosenfeld shared, “Last year, for the first time, we were voted the 2023 Best Local Tourist/Seasonal Attraction by the community [Indy’s Best Things 2023 Indy Star competition]. We were up against venues [such] as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis Zoo and other popular attractions. We were nominated again this year, which is really incredible.”

Additionally, Carmel Christkindlmarkt has been featured in several local, regional, national and international publications, including National Geographic, since its inception in 2017.

A CELEBRATION OF GERMAN CULTURE

At the heart of the Carmel Christkindlmarkt is the goal of offering a deeper understanding of German culture. With its carefully curated selection of vendors, food and entertainment, the market replicates the classic charm of a traditional German holiday market, bringing together artisans, woodworkers and vendors who embody the spirit of German craftsmanship. Visitors can enjoy a taste of German culinary delights, such as bratwurst, pretzels and mulled wine while browsing through an array of handmade gifts and holiday decorations.

The connection to Germany is strengthened by Carmel’s sister-city

relationship with Seiffen, a small town located in the heart of the Ore Mountains in Saxony near the Czech border. Often referred to as “Spielzeugstadt” or “toy town” in Germany, Seiffen is known for its centuries-old woodworking traditions. This partnership not only enriches the market experience but also creates opportunities for knowledge exchange. Seiffen’s famous wooden ornaments, nutcrackers and other traditional crafts are featured at the Christkindlmarkt, allowing visitors to appreciate ancient woodworking practices that have been passed down through generations.

“Sandy Richardson [VP of cultural programs and event manager] and I attended Seiffen’s 700th Anniversary as a town in July, and we were honored to be in the parade representing Carmel… there’s a lot of future potential with this relationship, and it’s very exciting! There is a woodworking school that trains the next generation of artisans in Seiffen, and they’re including in their curriculum to have students win an opportunity through a competition to come and present their skills at the workshop at the Christkindlmarkt in Carmel, and we will have our first students from Seiffen coming this winter. As our sister city Seiffen becomes a part of Carmel’s history, we, in turn, are becoming a chapter in Seiffen’s 700-year plus story.”

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Beyond the festive atmosphere, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt is dedicated to education. One of the market’s standout features is its commitment to providing scholarship opportunities for students interested in German language and culture. These scholarships help foster

a deeper appreciation for German heritage and encourage cultural exchange between Carmel and Seiffen.

The market also offers hands-on educational experiences, from demonstrations of traditional German crafts to interactive exhibits that allow visitors to learn about the history and significance of the Christkindlmarkt tradition. Through these efforts, the market not only entertains but also informs, making it a valuable cultural resource for the community.

The Carmel Christkindlmarkt partnered with the Indiana German Heritage Society and Indiana Historical Society in 2019 to bring its guests the Kulturecke— a fabulous space to explore Indiana’s rich German-American history. German immigrants contributed in many ways to the state: business, education, architecture and even Christmas traditions.

The Kinderecke (“Kids Corner”) is a special space for families to make crafts and memories together during all Market hours. In German households, it’s not uncommon to have a dedicated corner in the kitchen or family room for kids to create and do crafts.

Join us in this special kid-friendly hut to make all sorts of fun holiday-themed or German-inspired creations. The Carmel Christkindlmarkt staff and volunteers are excited to help you with your masterpieces.

A WELCOMING, INCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE

While rooted in German tradition, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt is designed to be an inclusive space for people of all backgrounds. The festive atmosphere, complete with ice skating, live music and a wide range of holiday offerings, invites everyone to participate in the seasonal celebrations. Whether it’s families enjoying a winter outing, individuals looking to explore new cultures, or residents and tourists alike gathering to experience the magic of the holidays, the Christkindlmarkt welcomes all.

“When the Carmel Christkindlmart made the choice to be a 501C3 [nonprofit] and really hyper-focus on being an authentic market and to represent another culture in a way that honors that [German] culture, that authentic

expression of that [culture] brings permission and unity for other cultures to come in appreciation of that one being represented well,” Rosenfeld stated. “This expression of the melting pot in the United States is right here in the heart of Indiana, walking around this market together, in unity, whether they celebrate Christmas or not.”

A GROWING TRADITION

As the Carmel Christkindlmarkt continues to grow in popularity, its role as a cultural and educational hub deepens. The market has become a symbol of Carmel’s commitment to fostering global connections, celebrating diversity and providing opportunities for learning. Its partnership with Seiffen exemplifies the benefits of cross-cultural relationships, while its educational initiatives ensure that visitors leave with not only memories but also a greater appreciation for the traditions that shape this holiday experience.

In this way, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt stands out as more than just a seasonal attraction—it is a celebration of heritage, a venue for cultural exchange and a place where the spirit of community and learning thrives during the most wonderful time of the year.

Brand new to the Carmel Christkindlmarkt this year is the inaugural Wundernacht, which will take place on November 20 from 6 to 9 p.m., the Wednesday before the market opens. Attendees will get a first look at ALL of the merchandise available in the market’s gift huts. Wundernacht means “night of miracles”—and this won’t only be a night of fun. It’s also a fundraiser to support future cultural exchange between America and Germany, making it a festive evening you can feel good about. Purchase your tickets online at carmelchristkindlmarkt.com.

Hannah Kiefer, VP of Communications, shared the introduction of Feuerzangenbowle to the Carme Christkindlmarkt.

“For (we believe) the first time at a Christkindlmarkt outside of Germany, we’re thrilled in 2024 to offer an authentic German drink: Feuerzangenbowle,” Kiefer said. “This flaming drink involves lighting a rum-soaked sugar cone on fire, then allowing the molten sugar to drip into the warm Glühwein below, creating an extra sweet, boozy treat. This delicacy will be prepared using special kettles and equipment custom-made in Austria for our market.”

For a detailed list of events and information on the Carmel Christkindlmarkt, visit carmelchristkindlmarkt.com and be sure to follow Carmel Christkindmarkt on Instagram @carmelchristkindlmarkt, on Facebook @Carmel Christkindlmarkt and on X @CarmelChristkindl for announcements and coverage of this year’s events and happenings!

This month, Carmel Monthly is pleased to feature Carmel Fire Chief Joel Thacker, one of Indiana’s foremost public safety leaders, on its cover. The former Indiana Homeland Security leader assumed his new role on September 3, 2024, and was officially sworn in on Monday, September 9, at Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre.

Thacker brings over 30 years of experience in fire service and emergency management. His appointment marks a significant milestone for Carmel’s public safety efforts as he steps into the leadership role with a wealth of expertise from his previous positions, including his role as executive director of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

Throughout his leadership roles, he has overseen firefighting and emergency medical services training, fire investigations, cybersecurity preparedness, emergency management response and recovery.

“Joel has been repeatedly called upon at both local and state levels for his leadership and knowledge in public safety,” said Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam. “I am thrilled to have his expertise focused on our community, leading an impressive team that is committed to the safety of our residents, businesses and visitors.”

A PUBLIC SAFETY VETERAN WITH DEEP ROOTS IN INDIANA

Thacker’s career began humbly as a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Johnson County. Over the decades, he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming

fire chief of the Plainfield Fire Territory before being appointed as Indiana’s state fire marshal by Gov. Eric J. Holcomb in 2022. His vast experience includes managing firefighting operations, EMS training, fire investigations, cybersecurity preparedness and coordinating emergency response and recovery efforts across the state.

“I have loved helping people since the age of 16 and [my passion for public safety] grew from there,” Thacker shared. “After I graduated high school, I worked for a private ambulance service in Greenwood, continued to get training and

development, and I moved to a position with Wishard Hospital as an EMT on an ambulance in Indianapolis and became a paramedic. I’m still a licensed para medic, though I don’t utilize those skills anywhere near like our men and women who are on the front lines every day. But those skills and experiences help me keep perspective as fire chief.”

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND PRO FESSIONAL ACCOLADES

In addition to his hands-on experience in public safety, Thacker is a licensed paramedic and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University. He also earned a master’s degree in criminal justice and public safety from Indiana University, adding to his comprehensive understanding of emergency management and fire safety.

loves attending concerts, parades and all of the [community] events. We have a job to help those attending to feel safe, along with law enforcement. That requires a constant state of preparation.”

The chief acknowledged the importance of improving communication with non-English speaking residents and visitors in Carmel, noting that over 100 languages are spoken within the Carmel Clay Schools.

BUILDING UPON A FOUNDATION OF EXCELLENCE

“I feel like my last four and a half years at the state, the experience and education in that role, has prepared me to work really well with CPD and local law enforcement from an all-hazards standpoint,” Thacker stated. “I’ve been talking with Chief Sterling [CPD] and with David Woodward [CCS Director of Student Services]. I know that the Carmel Fire and Police Departments have trained for events, but we have to continue to train, communicate and prepare for those [events].”

“I think the men and women of the Carmel Fire Department operate at a very high level right now, and we will continue to build on that by developing people in the organization,” Thacker said. “Every day, the fire chief has to be better than I was yesterday, and I look at how I can be better tomorrow than I am today… it starts with the fire chief all the way down to our newest firefighter. If we are getting better every day, the organization is getting better. When that happens, we can better serve the community. It seems simple, but there are a lot of moving parts within the fire department.”

Thacker added, “We have to be prepared on all fronts because the community

“At my very first meeting with the executive team, we spoke about the demographics and cultures of Carmel and Hamilton County,” Thacker said. “At my swearing-in ceremony, there were many cultures represented there, and it was wonderful to see that. It is certainly something that we need to look at to ensure that our messaging that goes out is available in all those different languages, but also, we need to make sure that we understand those cultures so that when we respond to an incident, we understand their expectations, culturally, and that our responders are aware of a potential cultural barrier, and that this is why the individual(s) are responding back to us in a certain way. In communities such as Carmel, it can be a challenge because there are so many different cultures, but that’s also what makes our community wonderful at the same time. We are also identifying leaders within the various cultural groups in our community so they can help share the messages as well.”

Thacker concluded, “Part of Mayor Finkam’s vision for Carmel is maintaining its world-class public safety, and that’s what really drew me to this position. I’ve been working with our administrative team to understand what the highest priorities are in their divisions that we need to be working on as well. Every day, there are new complexities within the city as far as building, construction and technology… and those are wonderful when they’re working right, but when something’s not, we are called in to take care of that problem. So, making sure that the department is well-trained to handle those situations is really the focus, and CFD does a great job at all of these things already, but we will continue to look at how we can improve.”

Gavin Goode

Honors 9/11 Victims on a National Stage

We first introduced Carmel resident Gavin Goode in our September 2017 issue, where he shared his journey from serving in the U.S. Marine Corps to becoming a feature film actor, working alongside Hollywood stars like Orlando Bloom, Joaquin Phoenix, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Ice Cube, Samuel L. Jackson and Sylvester Stallon.

Beyond his acting career, Goode is also an accomplished artist, specializing in painted steel. His unique artistry has garnered both recognition and acclaim while his work has raised substantial funds for local and national charities.

Honoring Heroes Through Art and Charity

Over the years, Goode has made a name for himself not only through his artistic talents but also for his dedication to philanthropy. Goode has been commissioned for numerous high-profile pieces, including work for A-list celebrities and athletes. He has created artwork for some of the biggest names in entertainment and sports, including Snoop Dogg, Usher, Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns.

Goode’s involvement in Mark Wahlberg’s Detroit charity event, Feldman Automotive Children’s Miracle Celebrity Invitational, for the fourth consecutive year highlights his consistent contributions to charity. Goode’s painted steel pieces featuring iconic sports figures are auctioned off to raise significant funds for Wahlberg’s charity efforts.

However, his recent moving tribute to the victims of September 11, 2001, has solidified his reputation as an artist with both skill and heart.

Goode’s latest piece, unveiled at the Freedom Tower in New York City, marks the pinnacle of his career. He spent over 450 hours creating a 10-foot by 5-foot painting of the Statue of Liberty that pays tribute to the lives lost during the 9/11 attacks. Every detail of the artwork was crafted with precision and reverence. Using copper as the background, Goode collaborated with Metal Supermarkets to achieve a unique texture, adding depth to the powerful imagery.

Goode’s 9/11 tribute was chosen by the National Guard to be unveiled at the Freedom Tower, a remarkable honor for the artist. The unveiling ceremony was a moment of pride, not just for Goode but for everyone involved in the project.

Accompanying Goode at his table that evening were actors Kelsey Grammer [“Frasier”] and Al Sapienza [“The Sopranos”],

Carmel’s Own

Goode added, “It is easily the most difficult piece I’ve ever worked on, and I have not been pushed like that since I was a 19 [to] 20-year-old in the Marine Corps just because of everything that went along with it, from building the piece, the frame and the logistics [to] getting the piece from Noblesville where my studio is, to

DRIVEN BY A PASSION FOR SPEED AND TECHNOLOGY

Max Miller, founder of SIMRGEN, brings a wealth of experience, creativity and technical expertise to his racing simulator company. With a deep passion for motorsports and a background in innovative technology, Miller has combined his skills to create an immersive racing experience unlike any other. His leadership has driven SIMRGEN to become a standout company in the industry, offering state-of-the-art simulators that capture

the precision and excitement of real-life racing. Through Miller’s vision, SIMRGEN continues to push the boundaries of virtual racing, delivering high-quality experiences for enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Miller’s journey began at age five with a slot car gifted by his father, igniting his lifelong passion for cars, racing and motorsports. Growing up around his father’s Land Rover, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz commercial dealerships, Miller developed both an entrepreneurial spirit and a strong understanding of the automotive industry. This early exposure laid the foundation for his future ventures, blending his love for racing with sharp business acumen.

“At the age of 22, I created the first 30,000-square-foot track and club for radio-controlled gas/nitro-powered cars,” Miller shared. “I sold and repaired radio-controlled cars and organized races.”

After traveling to 16 countries and 50 major cities worldwide and living in prestigious locations across Europe, the Middle East and North America, Max Miller gained valuable experience working for both Fortune 150 companies and a multibillion-dollar private corporation. Having earned an MBA in innovation and entrepreneurship, Miller has had three successful startups and is excited about the launch of his latest endeavor: SIMRGEN.

“I came to the U.S. and worked for a corporation for 12 years before I decided to leave the corporate world and start my own business, despite all of the ‘nos’ that I got from a lot of people, financial institutions and so on. I wanted to do something that I love, and I am glad that I’ve opened this.”

SPECIALIZED CUSTOM BUILDS AND EXPERIENCES

SIMRGEN’s Carmel headquarters and showroom are a testament to Max Miller’s ingenuity and technical expertise. Featuring a tribute to racing, with a special nod to the Indianapolis 500, the space showcases the evolution of motorsports. Through the cutting-edge simulators on-site, guests and members can experience the immersive thrill and realism of high-speed racing on the world’s most extraordinary racetracks in a myriad of popular marques.

The pièce de résistance in Miller’s showroom boasts a 57-inch central monitor flanked by two 32-inch side monitors and a 27-inch display on top, providing a nearly 180-degree view. This simulator features Ferrari parts: seat, chassis, headset, steering wheel, etc., creating a cohesive and authentic feel. With iRacing software, one of the best simulation platforms available, combined with realistic pedals and a hand rig for rally racing, the entire system offers a uniquely immersive experience that closely mirrors the sensation of driving a real car.

“It is as close as it gets to the way [a race car] drives and feels,” Miller said. “That’s what makes it unique. You can change the [track] elements with this software. The [features] tracks are measured by laser, so the simulated [tracks] are accurate enough that professional drivers practice on these simulators because they are very accurate. The ‘cars’ are very close to reality in the way they drive and sound. The intensity of the feedback, particularly on the steering wheel, can also be adjusted.”

Miller explained that all of his simulators are custom-built, differentiating his [simulators] from the “cookie-cutter” models out in the market.

“One of the distinguishing factors from what I offer is the custom-build aspect,” Miller stated. “I sit with the client and listen so that I can understand their purpose, budget, preferences and requirements. Then I build the specifica-

tions of their simulator right in front of them, virtually. Every component of their simulator can be customized.”

Once the specs are finalized, and barring all parts are in stock and available, Miller shared that his typical lead time runs about one week or two. He builds each simulator on-site himself, then delivers and installs the simulator to the client’s home or place of business.

AN EXCLUSIVE EVENT VENUE

The venue is also ideal for hosting events and parties, offering concessions like pizza, popcorn, beverages, etc. Guests can rent the facility, and once the second floor is

complete, it will feature a lounge and VIP area with even more simulators. Whether you’re a casual racer, professional driver or part of an eSports team, the space provides an exceptional training environment.

Based on your preferences and height, Miller customizes the simulators for his members, so the next time you visit, everything will be perfectly set up and ready to go.

“SIMRGEN aims to democratize car racing simulators,” Miller expressed. “I want to make them accessible to anyone passionate about racing by offering flexible options to rent, buy or subscribe to a service where they can use the rigs as long as they like, returning them when they no longer need them. This space [showroom] allows the opportunity for corporate and specialty events, team-building exercises and so on.”

Miller added, “I have such respect and love for this area and for the city of Carmel. We have world-class amenities and education, restaurants, economic development and all the things that people want and care about, especially when raising a

family. That is why I wanted to open and grow my business in Carmel.”
