The Carmel Youth Assistance Program (CYAP) will host its inaugural Carmel Gala-Designing Bright Futures with its Honorary Chair, Mayor Jim Brainard, on May 6, 2017. All proceeds will benefit CYAP programs that provide assistance to Carmel youth and their families.

C

armel Youth Assistance Program (CYAP) was formed in Fall 2015 to help strengthen youth and families through community involvement. CYAP works in collaboration with the Carmel Clay School District, city of Carmel, and the Hamilton County Superior Court. CYAP is a franchise of a great concept that was started in Hamilton County. The Early Intervention Advocates in each community work under the appointment of Judge Paul Felix, Hamilton County Circuit Court, and Judge Steven Nation, Hamilton County Superior Court 1. “The Youth Assistance Program provides tutoring, mentoring, and coordination of services from businesses, schools, government, and faith-based organizations, in addition to citizens in the community who want to lend their time and talents,” Judge Steven Nation explained. “These volunteers will provide to children the assistance, guidance, and support needed to help keep young people in school and build successful

lives, regardless of any obstacles or issues they may be facing.” Carmel resident Bonnie McClellan spoke about her family’s personal experience and the progress made due to CYAP’s assistance. “I was connected with Maggie [Figge] and the CYAP because our two foster children, Jaadyn (11) and Josiah (8), were having behavioral issues,” McClellan said. “Jaadyn was having difficulty in school and was really behind. My husband and I knew these children from church and had not planned on fostering or adopting these two, which we are currently working on. When we became aware that there were issues at home, and that they were going to be put into the ‘system’ we stepped in.” The McClellans, who have an 11-year old biological son, had a new set of challenges ahead and needed help. Jaadyn and

Josiah needed additional tutoring, and the McClellans were not able to fulfill those needs without the assistance of CYAP. “Maggie arranged for the boys to be tutored by CHS students,” McClellan said. “Jaadyn had moved around a lot and had been in three schools in one year. He was falling behind, and he was acting out in school. The tutoring is paying off and both of the boys are improving. Maggie also arranged for my husband and me to enroll in a 10-week parenting class. We were trying to blend our family, with the addition of the two boys, and find our roles. We were having some issues with our biological son who went from being an only child to having two similar-aged brothers and having to share his parents and things. This class has allowed us to openly share our experiences with other families in the class. We all feed off of each other and it has been an invaluable resource for me entire family.” McClellan also shared that CYAP went beyond the call of duty and garnered the support of a local music store so that Jaadyn would be able to join the middle school band and enrich his love for music because the band rental fee was not in the budget for the McClellans. The Carmel Youth Assistance Program has also been a paramount community partner to the Carmel Clay Schools by strengthening youth and families through community involvement. “It is very exciting to see our schools working together with the city of Carmel and the Superior Court,” Dr. Nicholas Wahl, superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools, said. “It is equally important to have a system where we have an interventionist, like Maggie, with the CYAP, who is there to help the kids, families, and our staff members with another layer of resources that we can’t provide at the school level.” Support the great work of CYAP and have a wonderful evening by attending the inaugural Carmel Gala-Designing Bright Futures.

The Carmel Youth Assistance Program focuses on early intervention for youths age 3-17 in an effort to keep at-risk children on a more positive path and out of the juvenile justice system. It’s proven that if we can better support children at an earlier stage, the benefits are enormous. Not only does this program make a difference in the individual life of each child and family, it also has a great impact on the community as a whole. Gifts to the Carmel Youth Assistance Program are used immediately to meet the program’s most pressing needs—helping the most vulnerable children and families in our community. Across Hamilton County, the program helps nearly 500 children per year. Without intervention

approximately 40% of those children could end up incarcerated, which could cost as much as $1.73 millionwww.CarmelGala.org per month for Hamilton County citizens. Early intervention works and is making a difference. You can too! To donate, volunteer or learn more, visit youthassistance.org/carmel.

Meet the New Steward of Chaucie’s Place Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // JJ Kaplan

A

fter the departure of the former executive director, Toby Stark, the board of directors knew that they had the daunting task of filling the large shoes that Stark left for her successor. Chaucie’s Place, a child advocacy organization in Carmel that focuses on preventing child sexual abuse and youth suicide, was under the thoughtful stewardship of Stark until she announced her retirement in 2016. Dr. Jack Powell was named as the new executive director of Chaucie’s Place and began last month. Dr. Jack Powell, a Carmel resident, was familiar with Chaucie’s Place through his wife, Susan, who is a member of the organization’s board. Powell’s decades of experience in educational administration and nonprofit consulting made him the obvious candidate for the vacancy. Powell holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Malone University, a master’s degree in education from Wheaton College and a doctorate in educational leadership from Western Michigan University. Powell is a former assistant vice president for Enrollment Management and at

Marian University and director of development of Lutheran High School, among other esteemed positions that he has held throughout his career. He is an active member of the community and serves on the board of directors for the Indianapolis School of Ballet and is a member of the development committee for Integrating Woman Leaders Foundation, Inc. and a past board member of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. “I had earned degrees and worked hard as I climbed the ladder and towards the last quarter of my career, I began to realize my passion to make a difference and to be more involved with organization that have powerful missions,” Powell said. “I want to make a difference for our society and in particular for students and children.” Powell explained that he was first introduced to Toby Stark and Chaucie’s Place board president, Richard F. Taylor III, through his wife, Susan. He became involved by volunteering his expertise and began to advise the board, pro bono, on its capital campaign. “As I became more familiar with the mission, I thought, ‘What an impact

CARMEL MONTHLY

Carmel_2017_April_Chausies_Place_New_Director.indd 1

10

this organization has in such a critical area.’ Powell stated. “I was at Lutheran High School when the executive director position became available at Chaucie’s Place. Its mission had resonated with me, and since I was already aware of its great need in the fundraising area, I decided to apply and was hired for the position. I am humbled and realize that there is a lot to learn about this organization though I am eager to help in the development of its funding, staff development, and additional program development.” Powell’s experience in education and executive leadership is key for his effectiveness as a communicator, especially when working with school districts and their administrators. “I know how schools operate and their challenges,” Powell expressed. “This opportunity is a good fit for my abilities and my passion allows me to give myself to this organization’s mission. We have an incredibly talented staff at Chaucie’s Place and rather than have only one spokesperson, I want to put several of our staff out there speaking on our behalf because they are all passionate and gifted individuals. I’m in the business of development, it’s in my DNA, and I want Chelsea’s Place to be a leadership engine for the staff and the volunteers that are involved with us. I want the people involved with Chelsea’s Place to accomplish incredible things and have an incredible impact.” The immediate goals that Powell has identified are to increase the overall awareness, watchfulness, and the feeling of obligation throughout the communities. “I want to change the thinking that ‘It’s not your problem’ or ‘It’s not their problem’ to ‘It’s my problem, too.’ It’s an unpleasant subject that is a worthy mission to invest one’s dollars. Think about the return of investment from one’s donation to Chaucie’s Place, what that gift means and how it can help to alleviate or at least make a dent in all of this. We will continue to show our donors what we did with their support and how it made a difference. “There is a modest endowment for Chaucie’s Place and it would be incredible to build that endowment and build our programs. Perhaps, we talk with people about estate planning and having

them consider our organization in their estate planning. I’d like to sit down with individuals and couples, talking about our mission and how their support can impact Chaucie’s Place. I am supported by a very engaged and dedicated board led by Rich Taylor. An organization wants work, wealth, and wisdom from its board members and we’re getting all three from this board.” Powell continued, “I will expand the leadership through our board committees and by inviting non- board members onto those committees to help us with development and with the marketing. We will continue to ensure that the Smart Steps program is evidence-based, and we

have reached out to academic and faculty partners who are doing research in that area, including the IUPUI School of Social Work. One of the growth areas that I want to focus on the next couple of years is identifying additional academic partners who will work alongside of us and provide statistical evidence that shows what kind of evidence that we are having so that we can demonstrate to our stockholders, donors, and advocates, the impact that our programs are having within our communities. We will also be able to advance the knowledge that Toby began when she designed and implemented programs such Smart Steps and so her legacy will go on.” The annual Friends of Chaucie’s Place

Breakfast, one of the organization’s two annual fundraisers, will be held on April 26, 2017. This year’s special guest speaker will be Matthew Sandusky, founder and executive director of Peaceful Hearts Foundation. Sandusky was a victim of childhood sexual abuse from the age of 8 to 17 at the hands of his adopted father, Jerry Sandusky. He is working on turning his traumatic personal experience into a mechanism to prevent other children from having to learn how to survive and heal from sexual abuse. Help to welcome Jack Powell and to support Chaucie’s Place and register for the annual breakfast at www.chauciesplace.org.

Strong Schools E q u a l S t r o n g C o m m u n i t y Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // JJ Kaplan

The Carmel Clay Schools are asking for your votes. A replacement “Operational Referendum” will be up for a vote on Tuesday, May 2, in a special election. Absentee voting begins April 10th. Early voting will be held April 22nd and April 29th. The current referendum that passed in 2010 will expire December 31, 2017.

D

r. Nicholas Wahl, superintendent of the Carmel Clay Schools, explained what the replacement referendum will do for the schools. “The replacement referendum will not allow us to do anything new,” WahI said. “It will simply allow us to continue to do what we do best - fund

high quality academic and extracurricular programs as well as recruit and retain quality teachers and staff. “Carmel’s per pupil funding is the second lowest in the state, $786 less than the average student,” he said. “The referendum that was passed in 2010 filled that gap and enabled us to maintain

our programs. We are recommending a replacement referendum, literally, to maintain what we are doing. This is an Operational Referendum, which is for people and programs. It has nothing to do with bricks and mortar.” A brief history on the referendum: In 2009, Indiana legislators reformulated how public education is funded, which had two major consequences. First, Indiana essentially became a ‘referendum state’ where school districts are now forced to pass regular referenda for a workable amount of funding. Second, Carmel Clay schools now receive the second-lowest per student funding amount in the state. In 2010, the Carmel community responded to this inequity and approved an Operational Referendum. This referendum is set to expire December 2017. Monies from the referendum will go directly to the district’s General Fund, which is used for operating expenses

such as salary, benefits, supplies, and utilities. Ninety-four percent of the General Fund is used for staff salary and benefits. The General Fund is one of six funds that make up the Carmel Clay Schools budget. The other funds are Capital Projects, Transportation, Referendum, Debt Service, and Bus Replacement. State law prohibits transferring monies between the funds. Voters passed the previous referendum to fill the gap in the state-funding

formula created the previous year. Since then, five of the six school districts in Hamilton County have passed similar referenda. Carmel’s proposed school tax rate is the lowest in the county. The proposed rate would be $0.19 at $100 per assessed property value, keeping the school tax rate at $0.83. Wahl explained that if the referendum does not pass in the upcoming special election, Carmel Clay Schools must consider eliminating 260 teach-

ers and staff, which would result in significantly larger classes. Non-required academic programs like AP and dual-credit courses would also be in jeopardy as well as extracurricular programs like sports, performing arts, and school-sponsored clubs. “At the high school level, we will have to evaluate all programs not required for graduation,” Wahl stated. “At the middle schools, we will have to review the interdisciplinary teaming, Core Plus, all of those great things that we’re doing with the electives at the middle schools. At the elementary schools, we would have fewer teachers and higher class sizes. We would also see higher class sizes at the high school and middle schools.” Wahl has been advocating on behalf of the schools and speaking with Carmel residents to answer their questions and garner their support on May 2. “I’ve been speaking with the community about the facts but, secondly, to stress that strong schools equal strong community. If anyone wants to maintain their property value and increase it, a ‘yes’ vote is for their own property and community. A vote ‘yes’ will maintain that strength that they’ve become accustomed to. Awareness and education are key for the success of this referendum.” Wahl has testified at the State Senate to encourage them to make an eight-year window between referenda, not a seven-year. Currently, the window doesn’t line up with the general or primary elections. Hence, the special election that will be held on May 2nd. The school district has received a extraordinary amount of support from the Carmel Schools Yes! Political Action Committee (PAC), whose goal is to pass the 2017 Operational Replacement Referendum for Carmel Clay Schools. The PAC

co-chairs, Tricia Hackett and Tara Ascioti, have been disseminating information to encourage voters to pass the replacement referendum. Wahl offered his opinion on the health of Indiana public schools. “Until people start talking about public schools and the value of them in the same sentence, we’re going to have challenges,” he said. “I think the public schools offer the most opportunities for families regardless of

your stage in life. Moving away from that value is very concerning to me as a 30-year educator and a 15- year superintendent because I see the value of public schools,” he said. “We want our students to become college, career, and life-ready, and I believe the best place to do that is in the public-school arena. We take all kids. No other entity trying to get into the game of educating students, Pre-K through 12, can say that they take all kids no matter what. Public schools can say that, and until somebody else steps up and shows another way to do that, I’m going to advocate for public schools.” Wahl also expressed his gratitude to the parents, individuals, and organizations that support the Carmel Clay

Schools and how he views their partnership roles. A strong community rests upon four pillars. The pillars represent government, businesses, citizens, and public schools. It needs all four of those pillars supporting one another equally. Wahl concluded, “When we weaken the public-school pillar, all remaining three are affected.”

Jackson’s Grant on Williams Creek A Marvelous Combination of History, Land and Design Writer // Janelle Morrison

hat do you get when you match stunningly beautiful real estate of historical significance with one of the areas most respected real estate developers? The answer is Jackson’s Grant on Williams Creek, a new residential development located just north of 116th Street between Spring Mill Road and Clay Center Road in Carmel, Indiana.

History of Jackson’s Grant The development’s name honors the property’s history. “The property was originally deeded in a land grant by President Andrew Jackson in 1834 to a family that held the property until the early 1900s when it was transferred to the family with which we are partnering in development of the property,” Larry Moon, COO Republic Development, said. “Hence, the name Jackson’s Grant.”

Larry Moon, COO Republic Development

The land that has become Jackson’s Grant has a long and distinguished equestrian history. In addition to being an active horse farm, for many years it was the site where local equestrian families would convene on Thanksgiving Day to participate in an annual foxhunt. Jt. Master of the Foxhounds for Traders Point Hunt, Tom Santelli, shared his fond memory of the annual hunts. “The voice of the foxhounds, the call of the huntsman’s horn and the clip, clop of horses down the road, thundering across open pastures and through the woods, could be heard every Thanksgiving, following the toast of Irish Coffee before the traditional family Thanksgiving.” In paying homage to the property’s equestrian heritage, Republic Development has named some of the streets after the horses that lived on the property.

streams and pockets of native hardwoods, also makes it a special piece of real estate for this unique residential community. Jackson’s Grant on Williams Creek is comprised of 261 acres of pristine real estate bisected by Williams Creek. With the creek nearly centered in the property, it allowed the designers the opportunity to create a central common area along the creek allowing access to all homeowners. Jackson’s Grant on Williams Creek has over 100 acres of common area of which 60 plus acres lie within Williams Creek Nature Preserve and thirteen forested acres within the Flatwood Arboretum. As Carmel has become more and more developed over the years, it has become impossible to find a development with this type of an uncompromised natural environment while offering such convenient access to downtown Carmel, downtown Indianapolis and major interstates.

Unique and World-Class in Design In talking with Moon about Republic Development’s design process for Jackson’s Grant on Williams Creek, he said “We were given a great blank canvas to work with and we wanted to make sure that the development of the property and the use of the land were well-thought-out. “We wanted to bring in the some of the best designers in the country so we engaged LaQuatra Bonci, based in Pittsburgh. They’ve been involved in a number of notable projects like the Biltmore in North Carolina and the Pittsburgh Waterfront Redevelopment. We thought that they would be a good fit to help us create our land plan.” Republic Development also hired Looney Ricks Kiss (LRK), an architectural firm based in Memphis with a national reputation by being involved in mixed-use communities like the Disney community in Celebration, Florida. “We brought LRK

Creek Consulting was engaged to design an innovative storm water management system employing low impact design concepts that will leave the area as undisturbed as possible. Instead of retention ponds, there are 61 strategically placed rain gardens; gently rolling fields where native landscaping collect, cleanse and slowly disperse storm water.

The Neighborhoods in to develop the architectural standards to create a timeless community,” Moon stated. “The architecture was determined based on seven historical styles that are prominent in Central Indiana. Looney Ricks Kiss helped us create an architectural pattern book for Jackson’s Grant that directs the builders in proper design elements for each of the housing styles.” In addition to the impressive array of national firms working on the design of Jackson’s Grant, some the finest local design talent has also been engaged. Gary Nance, a well-known local architect with a national reputation, will design the clubhouse and also be charged with the design to repurpose the iconic Hobby Horse Barn into the Hobby Horse Activity Center. According to Nance, “The concept for the clubhouse was to design a timeless well-proportioned building that enhances the history of the property. It’s as if we renovated a structure from the past. Even though the clubhouse will have all of the typical amenities, the detailing is reminiscent of a hunting clubhouse. The renovated Hobby Horse Activity Center will have a very casual feel. Some of the horse stalls will be incorporated into casual seating areas. It’s set up where couples as well as small groups can gather and enjoy being in a true barn atmosphere.” Nance is imminently familiar with the history of the property because he has known the property’s prior owners since he was in grade school. Nance acknowledged that, “The history of the property plays a huge roll in respecting the design integrity of this project.” Specifically, the main clubhouse will boast two stories, with a great view

overlooking Williams Creek. The Grand Hall will be available for weddings and special events. There will be a card room, fitness facility, and a multi-purpose room. The outdoor spaces complimenting the amenity buildings, designed by Carmel based, Outdoor Environmental Group (OEG) includes three pools, a tennis court, basketball court and natural play area. “OEG is doing a lot of cutting edge outdoor landscape design and installation,” Moon explained.

Innovative Storm Water Management New developments typically change much of the natural beauty and contours of the property as they excavate enormous amounts of soil to create retention ponds for storm water control. At Jackson’s Grant, locally based Williams

The Jackson’s Grant Builders As we all know, the success of any development can be significantly affected by the quality of the homebuilders building in the community. When asked how they chose the builders for Jackson’s Grant, Moon said, “We were very careful in how we selected the builders for the different neighborhoods. We selected builders for based on who would adapt to the unique aspects of the architectural guidelines that are being set. The builders had to be flexible and willing to adapt to meet the quality and the unique standards that we thought were appropriate for Jackson’s Grant.” The lineup of builders have a great deal of experience in the Indianapolis area and building in communities with unique characteristics.

Republic is a distinguished development company that’s been around since 1980 and has been developing in Central Indiana since the mid-80s. The company has diversified its projects over the years and is doing mixed-use, multi-family, and commercial projects. One of their more recent projects in the Indianapolis area is the successful Saxony development in Fishers.

There are seven neighborhoods in the overall community that will incorporate the whole life sequence from larger family homes, to townhomes and smaller homes for young professionals and active adults. While it will create a diversified mix of residents, the Jackson’s Grant Community Recreation Center, the clubhouse, Hobby Horse Activity Center and centralized common areas with miles of walking trails are there to bring the residents together for a very social and cohesive community.

WELCOME TO JACKSON’S GRANT ON WILLIAMS CREEK. CARMEL’S CROWN JEWEL IS READY FOR YOU. Great opportunities come around once in a lifetime, and this is yours. This is a chance to build your legacy on historic land passed down in a grant from President Andrew Jackson and then privately held for decades. Once the setting for thoroughbreds and outdoor socials, this mixture of pasture and rolling woodlands, intersected by gently flowing Williams Creek and its tributaries, presents a variety of housing options across seven distinctively different custom neighborhoods.

WHERE NATURE TRIUMPHS This is a perfect time to visit Jackson’s Grant and see first-hand the thoughtful planning that has gone into this community. Artificially created retention ponds, and all of the chemical treatments they demand, have been replaced with beautiful “rain gardens” to gently manage the watershed. Strategically placed throughout the community, our rain gardens naturally guide rain and snow runoff through areas that are landscaped with beautiful flowers and shrubs native to the central Indiana region and selected specifically to create healthy ecosystems.

“You Cannot Google The Experience” Finding The Best Travel Values, Hassle-Free

I

n the digital age, there is a misconception that using a travel agent is more expensive than searching for travel fares yourself online. The reality is starkly different. Working with a travel professional allows access to a wide inventory of travel destinations at terrific prices. Travel professionals add an enormous amount of value in securing the best deals. Most importantly, they eliminate the quality risk factor of going to the unknown destinations based solely on what you see on the internet. When it comes to travel planning, you might call Christopher Lingren a “rock star”. In fact, that’s the ranking he’s been given by his franchisor, Cruise Planners. Lingren, who is based in Noblesville, has been a Cruise Planners franchisee for 6 years and says he loves what he does. Cruise Planners, which is an American Express Travel Representative, was founded in 1994 by a travel agent in Coral Springs, Florida and has grown into the nation’s largest home-based travel agent franchise network with more than 1,000 franchise owners. It began by focusing on cruises but has expanded into offering all types of travel. Lingren says overall, Cruise Planners’ business is now made up of 60% cruise bookings and 40% land bookings. His personal business is 30% cruises and 70% land packages. Lingren says booking with Cruise Planners offers a lot of benefits. “Because of their history and simply by our size, we have fantastic relationships with vendor partners across the spectrum, both ocean, river cruises and the land spectrum as well. We have access to more than 2 million destinations around the world. The level of amenities and perks is high for clients, not to mention the great service”. And service is the key word. Lingren says he listens to his clients and then customizes travel packages, large or small, to suit their individual

It’s always about them. It’s taking the stress out of trying to find something on their own off their plate.” needs and desires. “It’s always about them. It’s taking the stress out of trying to find something on their own off their plate. So, it becomes more of a concierge level service in that we have a conversation and I learn about my clients,” he says and adds “it’s not a transaction, it’s a relationship.” Travel Agents have had a lot of competition in recent years from the internet. Lingren says the average person spends a minimum of 10 hours online researching a one week vacation. CARMEL MONTHLY

Not only does he remove that stress but he also adds a great deal of value. “I’ve been to 4 continents. I’ve been on nearly 30 ships sailing and experiencing. I know the deck plans of the ships. Throughout the Caribbean there are hundreds of all-inclusive resorts. I have personally stepped foot in, stayed, walked or toured 75 of them. I know the countries and the resorts,” he says. “You cannot “google” the experience.” Lingren has clients in 42 states and Canada and specializes in multi-generational travel, Alaska and Europe. He ranked number four in all of Cruise Planners in 2016 for sales of Disney products and he is proud to say that he has sent clients to all seven continents. Whether it’s a trip to Vegas or an African safari, Lingren says he loves helping his clients make special memories. “We all have choices in life. I wake up every day excited to help people find remarkable experiences that will give them exceptional new chapters to their life story,” says Lingren who adds, “because it’s not about the acquisition of things it’s about the acquisition of memories.”

Rick Fuson Reflects on His Thirty Years AS A PACER

Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // JJ Kaplan and submitted by Pacers

Wayne “Rick” Fuson, Jr., president and COO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, is home-grown in Indianapolis. An Indianapolis native, product of the Indianapolis Public School system, Arlington High School graduate, and current resident of Carmel, Fuson is celebrating 33 years with the Pacers organization.

F

uson’s family was originally from Terre Haute and Clay County and moved to Indianapolis where he was born and raised. His father, Wayne Fuson Sr., was the sports editor for the Indianapolis News for more than three decades. After graduating from high school in 1971, Fuson attended IU and studied political science. He played football for two years for John Pont. After graduating in 1975, Fuson moved to California and worked on a Lilly endowment grant that was focused on studying alternatives to tra-

ditional public safety delivery systems, which is known as today as privatization. Fuson returned to Indiana and met Larry Conrad, the former secretary of state and spokesperson for the Simons who purchased the team in the 1983-84 season. Fuson was hired by the Pacers organization and began his 33-year career working for Bob Salyers, who was the Pacers president at that time. He worked for Donnie Walsh and Jim Morris before being promoted to president and COO in 2014, when it was announced that Morris was moving into the vice chairman role.

CARMEL MONTHLY

Fuson handles the business side of the Pacers, while Larry Bird leads the basketball operations. He is responsible for bringing the Big Ten Basketball Tournament, World Swimming Championships, World Basketball Championships and many more events to Bankers Life Fieldhouse and also brought many events to Market Square Arena when it was still operating. “I was part of that team that worked with Donnie Walsh and David Kahn when the deal was made with then mayor, Steven Goldsmith,” Fuson said.

The future for us and for a lot of things looks bright.” “Market Square Arena was a great building with a lot of great memories, but it didn’t have the length of service that a building like Bankers Life Fieldhouse will have because this building has good solid bones. Today we have a building that is the busiest in the state and the best basketball facility anywhere. We just completed putting in the new clubs and refurbishing some areas. This building is like a good old house. You don’t have to tear it down because there are good ways to renovate it.” He continued, “We have to make sure that we have the best facilities, especially in our marketplace, because we’re not the biggest market in the NBA by any means. We must have the amenities that the players want.” Fuson discussed the addition of the new St. Vincent Center, which is across Delaware Street and will house the new Pacers training center. The 130,000-sq. ft. building will also be the home to the world-renowned St. Vincent Sports Performance.

“Our city continues to grow,” Fuson stated. “Had the folks in Indianapolis forty plus years ago not decided that sports were a good economic development generator, a lot of things wouldn’t have happened, not just for Indianapolis but the entire region. Carmel…Greenwood, Fishers, and the Zionsville areas continue to grow outwards from the core.” Bringing his career to full circle, Fuson is working on the organization’s bid to host the 2021 All-Star game, an event that he worked on his first year with the Pacers and that hasn’t been held in Indianapolis since 1985. Fuson acknowledged that bidding to host this prestigious sports event and revenue- generator for the city and surrounding counties is not a cake walk. “We have to really sell ourselves,” Fuson emphasized. “We do not have oceans or mountains to attract the fans. The attractions that we have to do today to make ourselves known are tremendously different than what we did 30 years ago. When we last hosted it, the city was in

CARMEL MONTHLY

20

its infancy. Today, it is very expensive to put on and brings in scores of media, personnel, and fans. The entertainment, the transportation, the hospitality, and the partners that are a part of the NBA all must be considered when planning.” Fuson continued, “There’s no hotel in the downtown area that takes you more than 20 minutes to walk to. Where we are at Bakers Life Fieldhouse in relation to Georgia Street is only three blocks away from the Convention Center and another two blocks to the Lucas Oil Stadium. There’s no place better than this. We have to turn in a bid in late April. We are in the process now of doing our due diligence as it relates to all the details and specs that are out and how much it’s going to cost. Over the next six to eight weeks, we’ll make the final determinations on all of that. There’s a lot of people who have a lot of things to say about it, but Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, will make that recommendation to the team owners. We are competing against several other cities in the NBA who want it too.”

Asked about how he feels about the future of the Pacers organization, Fusan replied, “The future for us and for a lot of things looks bright. We have by far the best ownership, in my opinion, then anybody in sports. The Simon family, Herb, his son Steve, the late Melvin, who was a dear man, and his kids: Cindy, Debra, and David, not only care about basketball and what we do here, but they care about the city. I think the future continues to hold the best of the best for our city because of Herb and his family.” When he’s not preparing championship tournament bids, planning major entertainment events, and overseeing the day-to-day business for the Pacers, Fuson and his wife, Karen, who oversees 60 newspapers under the Gannett West Group, rejuvenate at their property in Brown County, Indiana. “We have a place in Brown County where we have chickens and a big garden,” Fuson said. “We have a little vineyard, and we like to plant flowers. I also hunt and even have some venison in my freezer. Living and working in the city, we enjoy being able to be an hour away and be in the middle of the woods and be able to farm. We have a formal garden—it’s more like a Williamsburg garden—and is therapeutic for the both of us.” The couple have lived in other cities but consider Indianapolis and the surrounding areas a great place to live.

Q & A WITH RICK Would it be fair to say that Bankers Life Fieldhouse is the Camden Yards of basketball? We called it that for a long time. It really is the first retro-themed building in the NBA. I think that it is has some likeness of Camden Yards and some Hinkle Fieldhouse charm in terms of the barrel roof. I’ll never forget when we exposed the barrel roof, some people said it looked like Hinkle, and asked why we would ever do that and I replied, ‘I don’t think anybody’s mad at Tony Hinkle.’” When the conversation was centered around Indianapolis becoming the amateur sports capital of the world, most people laughed. Did you foresee that it would be what it is today? When Indiana went to the Rose Bowl in 1968, Jim Murray, a great sports writer for the Los Angeles Times, called Indianapolis, and I paraphrase, ‘A cornfield with the racetrack around it.’ At that point, it was. It’s great that we have IMS and really from that point forward, the late 60s, with all the public and private ventures that have been done, the city has grown exponentially.

This summer, stop hiding your legs!

Q & A WITH RICK Looking back over the last 33 years, what was going on when you were hired with the Pacers and what have been the highlights? I want to say that we picked Wayman Tisdale in that draft. I’ve seen a lot of players and coaches come and go and many events. We assisted in 1984 when the Dream Team played the college AllStars in the Hoosier Dome. Paul McCartney has performed in Indianapolis three times at Market Square and at Bankers Life, and I attended or worked all three of his performances. There are several events going on every week and each brings a different crowd, which is why I have enjoyed being able to do this for over 30 years. I got to be a part of Reggie Miller’s career and still get to work with Slick Leonard and be in the company of Larry Bird, a basketball legend in Indiana and in the NBA. What event haven’t you done yet that is on your list to do? From the Pacers side, I certainly hope that we can win the championship for Herb. I would love for the guys to win it.

After a six-year hiatus from acting, Mikayla Koharchik is returning to The Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre as Marian in the upcoming production of “The Music Man.” With support from her husband, Ryan Koharchik, the resident sceneographer and technical director, Koharchik is ready to make her return to the stage.

K

oharchik, a Zionsville native, is the musical director for the Zionsville High School and teaches language arts at Zionsville Middle School. Koharchik moved back to Indiana after teaching for the Teach America Program in the south Bronx for two years. She auditioned for “Aida” at the Civic in 2007 and was cast as Amneris, her dream role. She didn’t meet the director, Ryan Koharchik, until a couple of weeks after being cast. Koharchik performed in several productions and was cast as Eva Peron in “Evita” and Grace Farell in “Annie,” which were also directed by her husband.

“Performing as Amneris was my dream role, and I remember that it took a long time to hear back from the director after the audition,” Koharchik said glancing at her husband. “It was one of those auditions where you feel that you nailed it and gave it your all. I remember telling my family that if the director didn’t cast me, then he must be an idiot.” Mr. Koharchik did have the good sense to eventually cast her. They have since married and now have two sons, Reed, age four, and Rowan, age two. Mikayla and Ryan have collaborated on middle and high school musicals, which she has directed.

“Ryan is my creative collaborator,” she explained. “He is my lighting and set designer for the high school shows. Truthfully, he is my favorite director. I’ve always liked working with Ryan. He has the ability to not only be the lighting and set designer but also the director. Ryan sees what the lights will look like in his head and thinks about the vision before he even begins. When he directs, he’s involved in every part of the performance, which makes the experience unique for everyone involved in it. I think that’s what makes him a unique director.” The discussion turned to Ryan, who offered his defense on the length of time

Performing is our passion and when working at the Civic, we get to be in high-quality productions.” his wife had to wait for her first call back from the Civic. “I was trying to figure out who the trio was going to be, and since it was my first time directing at the Civic, I had to make sure that it was just right,” he explained. “I keep telling her that she was always at the top for that role, and we just had to get everything else in order before we made the calls.” Ryan Koharchik and his twin brother, Robert, were both involved in theatre while in high school in Hammond, Indiana. Ryan concentrated on lighting and Robert focused on set design. The two brothers both earned scholarships to Ball State University and studied theatre.

L

They went on to earn their master’s degrees at Boston University. Today, Robert is an associate professor at Butler University after both he and Ryan taught at Purdue University. Ryan left teaching to pursue his true passion and is the sceneographer and technical director at the Civic Theatre. He also works with the Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre, IRT, and Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. He is currently working with GHDT on their upcoming production of “Superhero” as the lighting designer. “The last production that I did for the Civic was Pippen,’” he said. “It was a lot of fun but it was time- consuming, and I decided to take some time away from

directing when we had the boys. I’d like to get back to it someday.” Both husband and wife elaborated on the quality of the faculties at the Civic Theatre and the opportunities it provides non-vocational performers. “Unlike any other community theatre in the area, the performers get to do what they love and do it with professionals,” Mikayla Koharchik said. “We get to work with professional lighting and set designers, costume designers, sound technicians and directors. Performing is our passion and when working at the Civic, we get to be in high-quality productions.” Mikayla Koharchik is fulfilling another one of her dreams by directing the ZHS theatre students in their upcoming Fall production of “Les Miserables,” a production in which she hopes to perform one day. “The Civic Theatre is a treasure for all of Indiana,” Ryan Koharchik concluded. “I hope that people will continue to support it and that we grow that support because I think that it provides something meaningful to the community, and that is very important.”

The notion of building a rabidly devoted following was the last thing on their minds. But that’s what happened. THEATRE

The Music Man

By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic, and touching, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best. Meredith Wilson’s six-time, Tony Award winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation. The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize - this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall.

Beyond the Rainbow

The time is April 23, 1961, when a 38-year old Judy Garland performed at Carnegie Hall in what the New York Times called “the concert of the century.” Set both on the stage of Carnegie Hall and in Garland’s mind, BEYOND THE RAINBOW simultaneously treats its audience to the famed concert while telling the life story of one of Hollywood’s most unforgettable icons. An portrait of a child actor turned star who captivated the nation with her spectacular talent and tumultuous life. Featuring 24 of her hit songs including, “The Man That Got Away,” That’s Entertainment,” “Get Happy,”…just to name a few…
