Ladies’ Varsity Lacrosse E x c e e d s

E x p e c t a t i o n s

Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Submitted

A year after lacrosse was added as the first new varsity sport at Carmel High School since 1983, the girls’ lacrosse team not only exceeded expectations, but they clinched a State championship their inaugural year.

B

oth the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse programs have had quite a bit of success in the last decade. But they were lacking the administrative support and recognition that goes with being a varsity sport until last season when the programs became a lettering sport. The girls’ lacrosse team is led by John “Jack” Hettiger who was named head coach at the beginning of last season. Hettiger has served as head coach of the lacrosse club since 2016 and has worked with the Carmel Dads’ Club (CDC) lacrosse program since 2007 as a coach and commissioner. Hettiger continues to value the CDC and encourages his players to participate at any level with the kids in the lacrosse program at CDC. Many of his players coach, participate as officials or engage with the young players during practices. This last season, Hettiger had the distinct opportunity to not only coach the varsity team’s first season but to also coach his daughter, Kate, who will be attending Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. She will continue to play lacrosse while studying physical therapy. Kate was the 2018 Candi Parry Award recipient. We asked Coach Hettiger what it took for the inaugural varsity team to win State and what his goals are for this coming season’s team. “Once it was announced that I would be head coach, a couple of things went into place,” Hettiger said. “Working with the athletic department, we put together a schedule of what we were going

to be doing over the next 10 months. From there, we started interviewing coaches and such and put a plan into place. That [plan] included preseason conditioning, preseason lacrosse skill development and classroom work. Every month, we did something for team bonding. It is important for us to have the conditioning aspect, the skill development, classroom work and a team bonding event.” The team worked on that extensive preseason plan from August through December. Hettiger added that the team picks a book to read each year and read “The Champion’s Mind” by Dr. Jim Afremow. “We relayed what we took from that book back to not only to lacrosse but to our lives, and one of our themes was ‘MPTS’: Mind, Physical state, Technique and Strategy,” Hettiger shared. “We tried to incorporate that into everything that we did.”

The quest for the 2018 State championship began in the fall of 2017. Hettiger and the coaching staff had the girls outline their goals. Many of the girls listed the State championship as their top goal. “What we said to them was, ‘It’s great to say that you want it [State championship], but you’ve got to work to do it.’ Our theme throughout the whole year was, ‘If you really want to compete for a State championship, you’ve got to practice like champions every day.’” Hettiger and his coaching staff broke the season down into a few different phases. The first phase from January to February focused on indoor conditioning and training three days a week. “We were challenged because we had 63 girls come out,” Hettiger said. “To balance 63 girls so that we [coaches] can work with each of them and give them our time and energy was very important to us.” The team moved to its next phase in March until just before spring break. The team played 10 games – a couple of games per week and a couple of weekend tournaments. This time period allowed each of the girls to play and gave the coaches the chance to see how the girls were all coming together. “We took away from that period of time that we were really developing as a team,” Hettiger said. “One of the things that we [coaches] stressed was that we didn’t want to play individual ball. We wanted to play ‘team’ ball. Although we had girls on our team that scored lots of goals, the most

9

important thing for our team was how many different girls scored per game and how many assists were there per game. We had games where we’d score 16-20 goals and have 12-15 assists. That’s unheard of in lacrosse.” The team’s defense was a force of its own. By April, Hettiger’s defense had matured and was shutting other more-established teams down. “This group worked harder than any group I’ve ever been around, and I’ve been around coaching for 20-plus years,” Hettiger recalled. “These girls put the time and energy in individually and as a team. We knew we had something special going into spring break.” The next phase, April to the first week of May and to the end of the regular season, the coaches challenged the girls to see how good could they get. “We challenged them to get better every single day,” Hettiger said. “We had phenomenal practices where our best kids were going up against

our best kids. Our levels of practices were sometimes more challenging than some of the games.” By April, the team had gelled and was running five different defenses and running a dozen different offenses. They were able to keep their athleticism and speed by resting players and alternating them while other teams were not. The result was the Carmel girls’ lacrosse team was able to maintain running at full speed and playing relentless offense and defense. “The girls were laser-focused on their objective, which was to get to the State championship game,” Hettiger said. “Starting in May, we talked about the six games we had to have in the playoffs and what it would take to get to the championship game. If we played the way we wanted to, we had a chance. We told them from the coaches’ standpoint, and it became our theme, ‘It’s going to be good to get there [semifinals], but it’s only going to be great if we make it to the last game.”

The Lady Greyhounds achieved their main objective, defeating the defending State champion Cathedral High School. Carmel’s Kelly Csenar and Kate Hettiger each scored a pair of goals in the first half to push the Greyhounds’ lead up to as much as four. In the second half, Csenar scored five unanswered goals. The Greyhounds ended the season with a 13-6 victory. “We won as a team,” Hettiger emphasized. “We went out and our team outplayed their [Cathedral] team, and I think it’s because we had more ‘team.’” Looking forward to the 2018-19 season, Hettiger shared, “Coming back as a champion is huge. The program is in place. Now we have to manage the program. The expectations are that we’re going to do exactly what we did last season. If we put the team first and everything else second and continue to work really hard, we could have another outstanding season.”

Welcome to our

Summer is quickly coming to an end, and if you have lots of things on your “to do” list still not checked off, the clock is ticking. But don’t panic! We have ideas for you from our experts on a variety of things you can do to improve and update your home before winter arrives.

H

ave you ever noticed that your furniture and wood floor have faded in color because they have been exposed to direct sunlight? JAG Window Tinting Indianapolis has the solution. Since 1993, JAG has provided window tinting and decorative solar control films for residential and commercial customers. Owner/Operator Kent Graninger says his products provide 99.9% UV protection for hardwood flooring, furnishings and even people. “Basically, the films protect your home from fading and give fantastic energy savings while actually increasing visibility and making the view crisper by taking out bad light or

glare, which can cause eye strain,” he says, adding that many homeowners are hesitant because they think film or tinting will make their home look dark or distort or darken the view. “It actually helps the view and brings out the true colors by reducing glare,” says Graninger, who says it allows you to open your blinds and enjoy your view. People also worry that it will make the home look different on the outside, which he says is not the case. He says you cannot tell a home with film from one without film and says it provides daytime privacy because people cannot see in. Another upside is energy savings. Graninger says his products can lower energy bills by as much as 15 percent. Graninger says all homeowners have windows that need and should be tinted. “If a homeowner lifts a rug or looks around AC vents and can see

Kent Graninger

a color difference in their hardwood floor, they have damage. It’s a very small cost and great benefit to tint versus replacing hardwoods and furnishings,” he says. “When I come to an appointment to give a free estimate, I bring samples of the film, so the homeowner can see how it looks on the inside of the glass as well as outside. The film is blending with the glass and looks very transparent on both sides. Once they see it they understand it”

JAG offers a manufacturer’s lifetime warranty that covers product and labor, and Graninger offers FREE ESTIMATES. He can be contacted at 317-877-8468 or by email at kent@jagtint.com.

Has your garage gotten cluttered and disorganized over the busy summer? PremierGarage powered by Tailored Living has the answer to your problem! PremierGarage is the garage flooring and cabinetry expert serving the Indianapolis area.

J

on Elliott and Tom Fleming have been providing high-quality storage and home organization systems for homes and businesses for 14 years. They offer free in-home consultations, expert measurement, innovative design and professional installation to transform homes or businesses to suit clients’ needs and specifications. Elliott says if you don’t have a mudroom area inside your house, utilizing space in the garage is

the perfect solution. “A mud bench with lockers or cubbies offers organized storage for the entire family. It can include hooks for hanging jackets, backpacks and sports equipment along with open shelves or cabinets for storing shoes and other personal items,” he says. Elliott says one area that is often ignored in a garage is the floor, and that’s where their garage floor coatings make a big difference. “As part of our Total Garage Enhancement, we offer custom

garage floor coatings, which add beauty and utility, giving your garage a finished look and making it a more user-friendly space,” says Elliott. “With a wide variety of color and finish options, you can coordinate your floor with garage cabinets, your car or even your favorite team’s logo.” All garage flooring options are designed to withstand the high traffic and heavy use that a garage endures on a daily basis. “The low-maintenance floor is easier to care for than concrete, creating the ideal floor for a busy garage,” he says. PremierGarage’s most popular floor is the PremierOne Decorative Texture floor coating. Elliott says it withstands heat as well as cold and wet or dry weather conditions. “The floor resists chipping, peeling, fading or stains. The floor is easy to maintain as spills can be easily wiped up and is resistant to chemicals commonly found in garages, including gasoline, auto fluids and paint thinner,” he says. I had a regular tune-up with Airtron and John was my service provider. He was great to work with. John helped me to understand the more technical aspects of my heating system. He took the time to look at my unit together with me and discuss options for managing my filtration system. His attention to those details and meeting me, the customer, halfway definitely made a difference. - Margaret C.

I have been using Airtron for four years since we moved here. I have found them to be prompt, courteous and competent. They serviced our old unit and installed a humidifier. When the 20+ year old furnace finally gave out, they sold and installed a new furnace and AC. Their maintenance service also is excellent. The service people are efficient and clearly know what they are doing. I have had nothing but positive experiences with Airtron. - Marcia

Custom Homebuilder is Honored of Number One Ranking in State If you have been considering building your dream home but have been afraid of the process and not sure where to start, Sigma Builders has created an innovative approach that is unlike any in the industry. In fact, Sigma was just named the #1 Custom Home Builder by Home Builder Digest.

Writer // Janelle Morrison

Personalized / Interactive / Expedient

S

igma COO Dave Berman, who has been involved in the home building industry for more than 25 years, says they truly partner with potential clients in a personalized and interactive way. The Sigma process starts by discussing market demographics, which includes such things as resale value and sale prices in a particular area. “We counsel our clients using real time market data to ensure that investment in their home is appropriate for the location,” he says. After that, the design team launches into a high-tech interactive design process, just like on HGTV. “We have 3D software where you can walk through the rooms and understand the spaces. This gives our clients an interactive, customized and personalized approach,” says Berman. He says Sigma does all this in a thorough and efficient manner, so the client would have a full picture of their home, including a closely accurate sales price, in just days versus months with the competition. Additionally, the design session is complimentary with no financial obligation while other builders typically require a deposit. “That’s a unique approach,” says Berman. “Not only do they get a customized plan that they

Carmel_2018August_Special Section Home Improvement.indd 4

S p e c i a l

S e c t i o n

Home Improvement

can see, touch and feel through the use of 3D imaging, but they also get well-defined specifications that are designed above the competition Thus our customers get “free” design of their dream home.” Berman says that other homebuilders will often give low entry-level pricing and then upcharge for the upgrades for things that most people would want in their home. “For us, we are very aware of what those items are, and if we think that the majority of people will expect to see that in a home, then we will include that in our standard features,” he says. Berman’s partners at Sigma Builders are Kimberly and Peter Wang who have been involved in the home building industry for more than 10 years. Kimberly is the CFO, and her husband is involved on the entrepreneurial side of the business. Kimberly says there is no nickel and diming with Sigma. “Everyone is going to want something special in their house. We try to get 90 percent of what clients want in their house. Then they can add their unique 10 percent,” she says. Kimberly points out that Sigma utilizes IT throughout the building process to make the experience a real-time dynamic. “All of our customers have access to an app, so that they

Carmel_2018August_Special Section Home Improvement.indd 5

can see the building stages of their home and can provide their input directly,” she says. “We use technology from beginning to end in the process.” “We are custom builders, and we want our customers to have their dream home on the perfect lot,” says Berman. If you have a lot of your own, Sigma will build on it. If you do not, they have their own lots, or they will help clients locate their perfect home site. Sigma’s success shows in its rapid growth, now building in Brownsburg, Avon, Zionsville, Carmel, Westfield, Fishers, Indy, near Northside and in key custom neighborhoods such as Newark in downtown Carmel, Jackson’s Grant at 116th and Springmill in Carmel, Bridgewater Club in Carmel, Brookside in Westfield, Cherry Tree Grove in Carmel, Brooks Park in Fishers, and New England Way in Avon and Surrey Park at 86th & Springmill. Sigma is announcing a new 24 home community in the Village of Zionsville. Lot reservations are being taken now. Additional new areas will be announced soon. In addition to a great warranty, Sigma also offers a list of complimentary items, such as an interior designer to work with through the process to ensure our customers vision for their home is achieved.

Berman says they also have a huge focus on responsibility to the communities in which they build. They sponsor events, such as Bike Carmel and Concerts at the Gazebo in Carmel, and become a partner with the communities. “We have a very responsible, sustainable, community-embracing approach. That’s what separates Sigma,” he says. “Every single customer that has built with Sigma has communicated delight with their experience, and they can’t wait to tell people about it. For us, that’s the ultimate scorecard.” 4630 Lisborn Dr, Carmel, IN 46033, USA (317) 203-3070 sigmabuildersllc.com

Your Idea, Their Expertise

Nicholas Construction turns their clients’ remodeling dreams into reality

It doesn’t take long for home improvement projects to get out of hand. Painting the family room? You got this. Hanging a ceiling fan? Uh, okay, have at it. Ripping out your old master bath vanity, replacing it with custom cabinetry and a granite countertopand adding a new glass block walk-in shower? Well, that escalated quickly.

hether you’ve been in your home for 20 years or 20 months, chances are there are areas of the house that could stand a makeover. You have an idea of what you want the finished product to look like. Maybe you’ve seen your dream kitchen in a magazine or the perfect basement with game room and wet bar on Pinterest. But where do you start? Navigating the endless choices of colors, fabrics, textures and architectural designs is not for the faint of heart. You need the guiding hand of a professional every step of the way. Enter Nicholas Construction. “We’re very hands-on,” says Kyle Nicholas, president of the four-year-old company. “Our process and who we are is what differentiates us from others.” Nicholas Construction’s basic philosophy is to cater to the client. Through three stages – design, selection and construction – they work to make sure the finished product is just what the customer had in mind. It starts with a feasibility study, or as Nicholas likes to call it, “a heartbeat check. Making sure the budget aligns with the customer’s end goal,” he says. Next is a visit to the client’s home by

Home Improvement Lead Designer Laura Sherrell. She walks through the entire house to get a feel for the layout and looks at any of the inspirational photos that the homeowner has drawn their ideas from (even those Pinterest images), often spending as much as two hours to get the whole scope of the project. “Initially, we base (our design) off the function of the space first and how it’s going to flow and what the design’s going to look like,” says Sherrell. “Then we get into the finish selections’ phase of choosing colors and textures and that kind of thing.” Nicholas and Sherrell both believe it’s important to follow the customer’s design wishes as closely as possible, so the finished product is one everyone is happy with. However, sometimes those wishes won’t work physically or financially, and

that can lead to some awkward moments when a homeowner needs to be told their plans may not work exactly as they had hoped. “We’re not afraid to have difficult conversations,” says Nicholas. “When you’re hiring a design/build firm, you’re hiring us for our expertise. There are a lot of times we go into a space and take [the customer’s] inspiration, and then we have to work to get the functionality out of it.” Nicholas also takes pride in his company’s ability to do a wide range of projects – from a straightforward kitchen remodel to a whole-house renovation. One project Nicholas was especially proud of was a basement renovation after a water remediation in a home in the Windermere neighborhood in Carmel. “We redid the bathroom and added a wet bar and custom millwork,” says Nicholas. “We added accent walls, all new flooring – carpet and hardwood – and even a movie theater.” And always with their signature hands-on approach. “I handle all the project management. I don’t outsource it,” says Nicholas. “I’m very

Carmel_2018August_Special Section Home Improvement.indd 7

integrated from the get-go, and Laura does all the design work. For Laura and me, this is our pride and joy.” With that kind of commitment to superior workmanship and customer input, you can trust Nicholas Construction to make your home improvement dreams come true.

Andrew Wagoner – Home Services Is your home’s roof in need of a repair or replacement? If so, it’s time to call Andrew Wagoner, Residential Project Manager with Amos Exteriors, before the winter winds start blowing. In addition to roofing, Amos Exteriors provides expert siding, guttering, windows, insulation and painting services.

Andrew would like to extend the following special offer to Carmel and Zionsville residents: FREE Home Exterior Inspection. The Home Exterior Inspection will provide the service of noting problems which may be evident at time of inspection and will also provide written solutions as needed in order to give you peace of mind that unnecessary damages and expensive problems can be avoided down the road. While we would recommend having a professional like Wagoner inspect your house, here are some things you can do to inspect your house’s exterior to reduce the cost of repairs down the road:

Siding Look for swelling that indicates possible rotting.

Windows Aluminum-clad wood windows can completely rot apart on the inside yet leave no visible evidence at the exterior. Andrew Wagoner

Chimney Chimney repairs can be another large expense. Missing mortar between the bricks typically won’t be a major repair, but missing bricks and large cracks in the walls can sometimes mean the upper portion of the chimney needs to be rebuilt.

Roofs Missing or dislodged roof shingles are an alert to wind damage and can become a cause of unwanted water damage.

W

agoner has been providing home services to Carmel, Zionsville, Westfield and Whitestown residents for more than 30 years. A lifelong craftsman with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Wagoner brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his customers. Wagoner has been partnering with Amos Exteriors Inc. since 2014. “This family-owned and operated business has more than 45 years of experience, and they’ve earned critical industry distinction along the way, including the Owens Corning Roofing Platinum Preferred Contrac-

Carmel_2018August_Special Section Home Improvement.indd 9

Gutters/Water Management tor designation. It means that Amos Exteriors meets the highest standards obtainable in the Owens Corning family of Contractors where the commitment to excellence is required and strictly adhered to,” says Wagoner. An Indiana native, Wagoner is a graduate of a high school in the Indianapolis area. Following graduation, he honorably served in the military as an Aviation Electronics Technician with the 3rd & 7th Fleets of the United States Navy. When he’s not assisting clients, Andrew enjoys attending church and being a member of the Central Indiana Bicycling Association (CIBA).

This one is huge. Make sure water is properly directed away from the house. Look for proper gutters, downspouts and downspout extensions. They’re not required, but they certainly help. Also, check to make sure the earth slopes away from the house.

You can reach Andrew Wagoner to schedule your FREE Home Exterior Inspection by calling or texting 317-848-4799 or emailing awagoner@amosexteriors.com. www.amosexteriors.com

FEATURED CHARITY

THE CAUSES SUPPORTED BY

ARTOMOBILIA WEEKEND

T

his year’s Artomobilia Weekend will feature two fundraisers, Fuelicious and SHIFT, and will raise awareness and funds for two remarkable organizations: Heart Reach Carmel and Indiana Children’s Wish Fund.

HEART REACH CARMEL

INDIANA CHILDREN’S WISH FUND

Fuelicious, an exclusive lifestyle event hosted at the Lucas Estate in Carmel on Friday, August 24, will benefit Heart Reach Carmel. Heart Reach is a local nonprofit organization focused on providing AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) into the hands of first responders and trained individuals in public locations. An AED is used to restart the heart in the event of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Each year, sudden cardiac arrest kills 335,000 people of all ages and fitness levels without warning. Ninety-five percent of those who suffer from SCA die because CPR and defibrillation usually occur too late, if at all. If first responders apply CPR and utilize an Automated External Defibrillator within five minutes, the AHA estimates that at least 40,000 more lives per year could be saved. Heart Reach presents its annual “Bolt for the Heart 5K,” held in Carmel, to raise awareness and additional funds. With the funds, Heart Reach purchases AEDs and puts them into municipal vehicles, such as first responders. The defibrillators are about $1,000 per unit. The goal at this year’s Fuelicious is to raise enough funds, so Heart Reach can purchase as many as 60 defibrillators. “We’re honored to have Fuelicious reach out to us,” said Pierre Twer, Board president at Bolt for the Heart. “This [event] is about creating awareness, and it gives us another platform to talk about putting AEDs in the cars of first responders. Of all the cities in the greater Indianapolis area, Carmel, Westfield and Noblesville are well ahead of the game by having AEDs in their police cars.” Registration is now open for this year’s “Bolt for the Heart 5K” that will be held on Thanksgiving Day. Participants can register at boltfortheheart.com.

Brand new to this year’s Artomobilia agenda is SHIFT, the newest event for 2018, held Sunday, August 26 following Artomobilia. Collectors and enthusiasts, along with their distinct cars, will experience some of the best roads southern Indiana has to offer along a hand-selected driving course. This year’s SHIFT will help raise awareness and support for the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund. Purpose drives the focus of this event by combining the awareness and resources of automotive enthusiasts, business leaders and local personalities in supporting this incredible organization. Indiana Children’s Wish Fund is a 501(c)(3) and single-entity, statewide wish-granting organization focused on Indiana children, ages 3-18, with lifethreatening or terminal illness. Indiana Children’s Wish Fund is a local organization and is not affiliated with any other wish-granting organizations. It was founded in August 1984 and is celebrating over three decades of wish granting. The “wish” children are referred to the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund by their doctors, nurses, social workers, parents, etc. “The whole weekend is a very cool event, whether its Artomobilia itself or Fuelicious, which is a beautiful event. And the cars are amazing,” said J’Lynn Cooper, Director of Wish Operations. “We think SHIFT is going to be a great way for us to get our name out into the community. All the funds raised from events like this go directly to granting wishes. We have children waiting for ‘wishes,’ and we need the funding to grant those wishes.” An average wish is about $6,000. For more information on the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund, visit indywish.org.

The following Specialty Classes highlight a broad cross-section of automotive design.

FM

FEATURED MARQUE

FORD PERFORMANCE This class will feature a broad-array of examples of the marque in the form of original, period-correct, specialty and race cars.

RestoMod

ALL YEARS This collection of iconic cars and trucks draws interest from their classic styling roots while integrating amazing advancements in automobile technology over the past 40+ years to enhance the performance, comfort and safety of these vehicles.

CSC

CARROLL SHELBY FORD CARS This class features original, period-correct Ford cars built by and/ or influenced by Carroll Shelby from the 50’s to the present day. Adopting Carroll’s no nonsense approach, these automotive icons will demonstrate how matching good-looks with superior power make for a winning combination every time.

EM

EMERITUS This class features exclusively past year’s “Artomobilia First in Class” or “Artomobilia Best in Show” winners across all makes, models and years. Cars will be presented in the appropriate class, but will be designated as Emeritus, and not judged. Cars that have won, deemed as Emeritus, cannot win for a period of three (3) years. For example, a car winning in 2015 could not again win the same class until 2019.

GTO1

ASC2

PONTIAC GT0: 1964 – 1974 After hitting the half-century mark, the Pontiac GTO continues to serve as the foundation for the “Muscle Car” era in American automotive history. This class will feature all original, period-correct GTOs that were produced from 1964 – 1974.

GTO2

PONTIAC GT0: 2004 – 2006 Building on the heritage of the GTO, entrants in this class feature the GTO revival from 2004 to 2006 model years represented by an import for Pontiac, a left-hand drive version of the Holden Monaro, itself a coupé variant of the Holden Commodore.

NG

NEXT GENERATION This class features a cross-section of cars, all years, makes and models, which are owned by individuals 18 years or younger. Join the next generation of young car collectors, as we provide a forum for them to present their “First in Class” candidates.

TN

THEN & NOW This class features original, period-correct models, both its past model alongside its present model. From Beetles to Challengers to Camaros, compare and contrast the heritage of the same marque over many years, and the modern designers “take” on an iconic shape.

AMERICAN SPORTS CARS: 1960 – 1973 This class features original or restored, period-correct American sports car models produced from 1960 –1973. Up until the OPEC gasoline crisis spoiled the party, American car-makers continued to roll out successive versions of fun, performance focused cars.

A

ANTIQUE: PRE-1924 This class features original and/or restored period-correct models, including Ford Model A, Ford Model T, and Brass-era cars. Representing the genesis of the automotive hobby, and the foundation for today’s familiar cars, this ancient iron, sets the stage for more technologically advanced mass-produced machines to come.

AC1

AMERICAN CAR: 1925 – 1954 This class features original or restored, period-correct American convertible, coupe, or sedan models produced from 1925 – 1954. Perhaps not your father’s Oldsmobile, but then again, maybe, this is the era when America’s cars of yesterday began to physically resemble cars of today.

AC2

ASC3

AMERICAN SPORTS CARS: 1974 – PRESENT This class features original or restored, period-correct American sports car models produced from 1974 – Present. Despite whatever the fluctuating economic and cultural mood of the day, Americans have never lost their appetite for personal performance cars. These are the torch-bearers and survivors.

CC

CLASSIC CARS: 1925 – 1948: This class includes “closed top” and “open top” original or restored, period-correct fine or unusual motor cars which were produced from 1925 – 1948. These unbridled cars prominently featured in films from Hollywood’s “Golden Age” come to life and provide a glimpse into the automotive lifestyle of a by-gone era.

AMERICAN CAR: 1955 – 1973 This class features original or restored, period-correct American convertible, coupe, or sedan models produced from 1955 – 1973. Fins, wide white-walls and increasingly chrome galore, these are the cars that spawned the Baby Boomer generation sometimes from the confines of their cavernous backseats.

ASC1

AMERICAN SPORTS CARS: 1948 – 1959 This class features original or restored, period-correct American sports car models produced from 1948 –1959.Including examples like the original Chevy Corvette and Ford T-bird, these are examples of a post-war generation of coupes long on performance and cool design.

rofessional commercial and fine art automotive photographer, Anthony Ross Tyler started pointing his lens at rusty and abandoned vehicles back when 35mm film was still king. Eventually companies, shops and collectors starting booking him to shoot antique, classic, pro-touring, lowered, and other custom rides. His sole focus is to capture that feeling you get when you see an amazing car in person and translate that into the photographic art form. His process and methods are unique and detailed as are the images he creates. YOU CAN CHECK OUT MORE OF HIS WORK AT AROSSTYLER.COM For 2018, internationally recognized photographer Anthony Ross Tyler will join the Artomobilia and present a exhibition throughout the day that features both his past work as well him actively applying his art. Those that wish to participate in the exhibition will be parked in a group near Main stage, and their cars will be individually photographed in an “industrial” setting.

GreenLawn by Design Royce & Catherine Simpkins

F

ourteen years ago, Catherine and Royce Simpkins launched GreenLawn by Design out of their garage. It’s not surprising that they would end up starting a business together in light of the fact that they have known each other since the third grade. They grew up together in a small rural community in northern Indiana and share similar values. It’s those values that they have incorporated into GreenLawn by Design to make it successful as they work hard to win the loyalty of their clients. Catherine grew working on the farm that has been in her family for over 100 years. Like a lot of kids in the country, she was involved in 4-H. After graduating from college with a degree in marketing, she went to work for a farm service company that sold fertilizers and chemicals to local farmers in northern Indiana. Catherine was the first woman to become the manager of the company. With that position, she gained an understanding of the importance of great customer service while she was required to be a consultant to area farmers to help them understand successful management strategies, identify weed and insect problems and then develop treatment plans and to provide

Carmel_2018August_Special Section Home Improvement.indd 10

guidance to framers on state of the art farming methods and products. Royce spent 20 years in the U.S. Army and while serving received his college degree in Business Management. After his retirement from the military, he went to work in management for a national lawn service company. From his time there along with his experience in the military, Royce was ready to launch his own business, and so was Catherine. Enter GreenLawn by Design. GreenLawn by Design offers year-long lawn care services. They also provide full-service landscaping services, including installation, maintenance and even hardscapes. Among their hardscape projects are retaining walls, patio pavers, water features and fire pits. With all the new home construction in the past few years, the Simpkins said they have been very busy providing services for new home construction. Many new homeowners find that the landscaping around their new house is shoddy and was not designed with the homeowners’ tastes in mind. As a result, new homeowners ask GreenLawn by Design for services like replacing lawns, creating privacy fences with plants and adding trees.

Home Improvement Many of us get that burst of energy in the spring and only then begin to think about caring for our lawns and trying to beautify the exterior of our homes. For many of us, fall is mistaken for simply a time to rake leaves and put away the patio furniture. While GreenLawn by Design does offer fall cleanup and leaf removal, the Simpkins ask that you don’t overlook the important services that they offer in the fall that will have a terrific effect on your lawn in the spring. They say the best way to assure a beautiful lawn in the spring is to perform certain maintenance procedures in the fall, such as aeration, over-seeding and fertilizer application. Royce recommends seeding your lawn in the fall, so the grass seed can germinate before spring and will not be negatively affected when the pre-emergence weed killer is applied in the spring. The early fall is an excellent time to do any landscaping in which you plan to add trees or other perennials, such as shrubs and flowers that grow from bulbs. The cooler temperatures, along with the normal fall rains, allow the plants to get a great start before the dryness and hot temperatures of next summer can take their toll. They recommend thinking of fall as a second planting season. GreenLawn by Design has long been dedicated to fabulous customer service. They have been named a Super Service Award winner for three years in the category of lawn fertilization and landscaping. They have installed software that they make available to their clients that, among other things, allows clients to log in and see if and when their lawns were serviced and view pictures of GreenLawn by Design’s employees to make sure that the person showing up is actually from the company. In addition, Catherine has a blog that informs clients of any insects or diseases that have become prevalent in the area and gives tips for maintaining a beautiful lawn. Rest assured that GreenLawn by Design is fully licensed and also insured. So, if you want a beautiful lawn next spring, call GreenLawn by Design now. The landscaping and lawn services that they can offer this fall will go a long way to ensuring you have a great outdoors next spring. 317-804-8088 greenlawn@greenlawndesign.com 1310 State Road 32 W Westfield, IN 46074 www.greenlawndesign.com

Home Value Renovation:

Storm Damage Renovators You Can Trust Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Laura Arick and submitted

Mike Redman is a local contractor who offers more than 20 years of storm damage renovation and home remodeling through his company, Home Value Renovation (HVR). Redman, president and owner of HVR, is a graduate of Purdue University and has been in the construction industry since 1994. He resides in Zionsville with his family and is a trusted business owner not only in the local communities but throughout his industry as well.

H

VR is an award-winning general contractor based in Indianapolis that specializes in the installation of roofing as well as a variety of other home remodeling products that include the installation of walk-in baths and other interior updates. HVR performs installations for both residential and commercial customers throughout Indiana and the Columbus, Ohio area. “We (HVR) started in the insurance restoration business from hail storms and other types of damage,” Redman stated. “We offer a lifetime warranty on labor and 50 years on materials. For us, it’s not about whether or not you have a service call; it’s

Home Improvement about how you handle it. Our crews are certified and trained by the corporate headquarters of the manufacturing product that they’re putting on.” HVR is a GAF Master Elite® Roofing Contractor. Only a select few roofing contractors in Indiana can claim that distinction. HVR offers all GAF products and has experience at installing and repairing roofs of all types, including asphalt shingle roofs, metal roofs and flat roofs. Redman’s company uses the highest-quality products from reputable manufacturers like GAF, Owens Corning, Pella, James Hardie, Mastic Siding and others. HVR is the only Home Advisor Elite 360 roofing contractor in central Indiana. Redman and his crews have earned high ratings with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and countless wordof-mouth referrals from satisfied customers, including the president of the BBB. “We installed a new roof, gutters and attic insulation in the president of the BBB’s house. He was ecstatic,” Redman said. “Then a major hail storm damaged their house last year, and we came back out and redid it. We have the pleasure of saying that we’re the only roofing contractor in Indiana who has put the roof on the president of the BBB’s house not once but twice.” Redman explained that HVR offers “no money down” and collects payment for the work when the job is completed. “We tell people that if companies come out and require a deposit to get the work going, that means that they likely can’t afford to bankroll labor and materials,” he said. “So they have to use another customer’s deposit to buy the materials. With our program, we do not require deposits from anybody. The customer pays us when the job is done and they’re happy.” Redman’s company offers in-house financing as well and works with any budget and any size home. “We do offer in-house financing for people who don’t have the immediate funds to fix up their house,” Redman emphasized. “We can secure them financing, so they can get the things done that they need to rather than be on a strict budget and have only so much cash to work with. We did over 1,000 roofs last year, and the project sizes varied from $4,000 for a complete roof replacement all the way to the $200,000 mark where we did some larger homes with roofing, siding windows and gutters. For the most part, our average job for roofing, windows,

siding and gutters is $20,000. We’re running about seven roofing crews a day. From start to finish, most of our jobs are completed in less than four to six weeks.” HVR uses modern technology to ensure precise measurements and estimates. “We don’t measure roofs by hand anymore,” Redman said. “We do inspections with a drone, and everything is done digitally now. We pull up all of the measurements and give them a down-to-the-penny exact estimate.” With precise measurements, HVR can order the correct amount of materials that are needed for each job. HVR’s average roof install is about 40 squares. According to Redman, most companies’ roof installs average 22-24 squares. According to Redman, HVR completes 80 percent of its roof jobs in one day.

Redman added, “With our no money down policy, our two decades-plus of expertise and our list of referrals, it really makes a difference when people are making the decision to work with us. Seventy percent of our business comes from referrals. Our customers feel comfortable working with us because they don’t pay us until we are finished with their job and they are happy, and we make sure that the customer is happy, no matter the cost. We go over, above and beyond, what a company should to make the customer happy. We make sure that the customer is happy at whatever cost.” Contact Home Value Renovation today at 317-445-4427 or visit www.getHVR.com for a free storm damage assessment or repair cost estimate.

Artomobilia

Artomobilia Celebrates Ford GT with Rare Collection Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Anthony Ross Tyler, Submitted and Ford Chip Ganassi Racing

The annual Carmel Artomobilia event has boasted one of the most eclectic gatherings of original period-correct automobiles anywhere, including Supercars, Exotic, Sports Cars, Classics, Racers, Historically Preserved, Indiana Built, Sedan/Coupe and more. The event brings an estimated 20,000 spectators and enthusiasts from throughout Indiana and surrounding states into the heart of the city of Carmel. The event’s organizers and sponsors are celebrating the 11th year of this remarkable display of automotive ingenuity and design.

T

his year’s Artomobilia will take place one entire weekend in August, beginning with Fuelicious Friday, August 24 and Artomobilia Saturday, August 25. It concludes with the newest event, “SHIFT,” on Sunday, August 26. Saturday’s Artomobilia will feature more than 400 enthusiast and collector cars representing more than 26 classes, including Super Car, Exotic, Classic, Sports Car, European, Domestic, Vintage and Racers on the streets of Carmel in the Arts & Design District. While these are not formally judged, they represent the best examples of what

Carmel_2018August_Artomobilia_Ganassi_V02.indd 1

is going on in national and local car clubs as well as provide a great opportunity to see firsthand how you can participate in the car hobby. This year, Artomobilia will feature the heritage of Ford Performance, specifically the Ford GT. Bring your families and friends to this remarkable event and enjoy several decades of automotive ingenuity!

Ford GTs Commemorate the 1966/2016 Wins at Le Mans This year, the Artomobilia team had an incredible and historic opportunity to capture an iconic image of three generations

of the Ford GT in both race trim and road models. With the assistance of the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Team, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, members of the Artomobilia Alumni and renowned photographer Anthony Ross Tyler, these images were captured, representing decades of Ford Performance. “John’s been associated with the company for a while,” said Mike O’Gara, team manager at Ford Chip Ganassi Racing. “We’ve provided show cars for Artomobilia in the past to be on display. He reached out this year with the idea of highlighting Ford and the GT in particular, and we’re happy to be a part of it.”

2018-07-27 10:27 AM

O’Gara spoke about the historic photo shoot and Ford’s reason for redesigning the Ford GT. “Ford’s point of bringing back the GT [in 2016] was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of them winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time in 1966,” O’Gara said. “That was the inspiration for both the race car and the road car. Most race cars that are designed are based on production cars. This [Ford GT] is pretty special because the race car was designed first. It’s been adapted to run on the road. The sole purpose of this latest version of the GT was a tribute to Ford’s heritage and success at Le Mans that goes back to the 1960s when Ford wanted to compete head-to-head with Ferrari and some of the other makes at Le Mans. It’s been very special for us and the Ford family, and we were lucky to put these race cars together and start racing them in 2016. We didn’t have a successful early portion of the season here in the States, but we packed up all of our stuff and went to Le Mans and managed to win on our first attempt since Ford’s first Le Mans win 50 years ago.” A 50-year rivalry between Ferrari and Ford was rekindled in 2016 at Le Mans. The No. 68 Ford GT of Sébastien Bourdais (FRA), Joey Hand (US) and Dirk Müller (GER) crossed the finish line at Le Mans at 3 o’clock on Sunday as the overall GT winner of the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours. The No. 69 Ford GT of Ryan Briscoe (AUS), Scott Dixon (NZ) and Richard Westbrook (GB) joined the winners on the podium after scoring third place. The Nos. 66 and 67 Ford GTs finished in fourth and ninth places, respectively.

One Rare Car and a Comedy of Errors Car collector and aficionado Gary has been showing cars at Artomobilia for the past several years. Most of Gary’s exquisite collection is kept overseas, and he transports them to the U.S. for different occasions. The very first car that he exhibited at Artomobilia was a 1974 BMW 2002

Bill Ford, executive chairman at Ford Motor Company, said in a statement released by Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Team after the victory at Le Mans, “This is a historic moment for the Ford Motor Company. We dared to dream that we could return to Le Mans, 50 years after the incredible 1966 win, and take on the toughest competition in the world. The pride we all felt when the Ford GT crossed the line at Le Mans is indescribable. The team that designed, built and raced the Ford GT has worked tirelessly to bring us to this result, and I am proud of each and every one of them. The Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team demonstrated the spirit of Ford, that

of innovation, determination and true teamwork. We cherish our history and heritage, but today, we made history again, and I couldn’t be more proud.” O’Gara reflected upon that historic day. “It was a big day,” he expressed. “Bill Ford, Edsel Ford II and Henry Ford III were all there to celebrate the win with us, which was massive. We didn’t even understand how big it was until it happened. Since then, we’ve won the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, Brickyard 400 and 12 Hours of Sebring. Obviously, winning Le Mans was the biggest and not just for Chip Ganassi Racing and all of our guys but for the Ford family and Ford fanatics everywhere.

People come out to the race tracks and are amazed. They just want to touch the car and be near the race cars, which is pretty cool. I’ve worked in IndyCar, NASCAR and other series almost my whole life but never with a program that has this much heritage and enthusiasm from the company, the manufacturer and the fans as well. To bring all of these cars together at our shop and celebrate that [heritage] for Ford was a pretty cool thing to be involved with.” When asked what prompted Chip Ganassi to become involved with Ford and race the GT, O’Gara replied, “Le Mans was another goal post for Chip Ganassi the individual and the company as well. It was another race that was on his bucket list as both a racing fan and team owner. When Ford approached us with the idea of doing it, he said, ‘Let’s go for it.’ He didn’t see any reason why we couldn’t go over there and why we couldn’t win. And we managed to do it. He’s the only guy in history that’s won all of those big races. It set him in a different class from some of the other car team owners out there.”

2018-07-27 10:27 AM

that was awarded first place in the German Sports Class. “I entered it, and it beat all those fancy Porsches and all of those other cars,” Gary said. “Last year, I brought a 1967 Shelby GT500.” A collector of Jaguars, Gary explained that he’s had a history with Ford going back to his childhood as his family members were “Ford people.” “I was in London, and a friend and I went to the National Motor Museum. He [my friend]

said I had to see a car down there. We drove down to Beaulieu in Hampshire [England], and off in the corner was a 1968 Ford GT Mk III of which there are only seven in existence. The museum didn’t own it, so I traced the woman who owned it, and she and I began talking about the car.” Over a period of two years and a several details later, Gary convinced the woman to sell him the car. “I had finally convinced her

to sell it,” he said. “I had to fly into Paris to take her to dinner before she finally agreed to sell me the car and agree upon a price. I keep a bank account in England, and my bank wired money to my Barclay’s account in London. The bank wired it to the wrong account. We met in her lawyer’s office, and I didn’t have any money in my checking account over there. Then I found out that she didn’t actually own the car. It was in her husband’s estate, and he

The Passion behind the Power Don, a Carmel resident and an owner of a 2017 Ford GT, is a life-long automobile appreciator and his car was one of the five featured in the iconic Ford GT photo shoot. “My car is the blue Ford GT with silver stripes in the front center of that photo,” Don said. “It’s a current generation road car. We [local Ford GT owners] were invited to part

Carmel_2018August_Artomobilia_Ganassi_V02.indd 3

of this photo shoot and John [Leonard] said that based upon his research, there isn’t a single photo anywhere with all three generations of Ford GT represented.” Don moved to Detroit as a kid and grew up in the “car culture”. After college, Don went into the automobile industry and appreciating cars and attending car shows has been a

long-time hobby of his. “I’ve always been a car fan for as long as I can remember,” Don said. “I wasn’t able to have fine automobiles growing up. My first car was a ‘71 Ford Torino that cost me $250 and I overpaid for it. I have two college-age boys and a statement that I made to them several years ago that has stuck is ‘To me it’s not a material thing [ap-

had passed.” After sorting through the convoluted details, the two shook hands and agreed that once Gary’s check cleared, the title would be cleared and released to him. “Once I received the title, I had the car dismantled and put back together,” Gary said. “It had been sitting for 35 years, but it only had 5,000 miles on it. That is the brief version of how I ended up owning this car.”

preciating cars]. It’s all about a community’. Whether that’s Artomobilia which I think is a fabulous example of that sense of community or your local ‘cars and coffee’ meet up where all of the stripes are checked at the door. It doesn’t matter if you have a million dollar car or a thousand dollar car that you’re passionate about-there’s passion and energy around the automobile.” Don became fascinated with the legacy of Ford Performance, specifically with regards to the Ford GT. “The heritage behind the GT, Henry Ford and Enzo Ferrari, and Ford beating Ferrari in ’66 setting out to do it again fifty years later was attractive to me,” he said. “What was also attractive to me was the opportunity to own one of these cars from a short production run. I like sharing the car and that’s one of the reasons why I wanted to help John with the photo shoot. I feel a bit of an obligation being an owner of the Ford GT and Ford wants us [Ford GT owners] to drive the cars and show the cars. I’m keen to make sure that it doesn’t just sit away wrapped in plastic-it’s a car that is meant to be enjoyed.”

A Fun and Easy Car to Drive The re-release of the Ford GT was advertised during the 2004 Super Bowl game. Eric, a Carmel resident, recalled it was that very commercial that caught more than just his eye; it caught his interest in the new Ford GT. “I became fascinated with it [Ford GT] to the point that I wanted to own one when I saw the reintroduction of it,” Eric said. “One of the Super Bowl ads showed a Ford GT winding through the road, and it was exactly like the one that I ended up buying – red with white stripes. It [the car] became a target of something to acquire, and once I rode in my friend’s Ford GT (he lives here in Indianapolis and is also a car collector), I was really hooked.” Eric has been attending Artomobilia since before it became the renowned show that it is today held in Carmel. “I have attended and shown cars with this group when it was held on the canal in downtown Indianapolis and before it

Carmel_2018August_Artomobilia_Ganassi_V02.indd 4

was Artomobilia as it is known today,” he said. “Then it moved up to Carmel, and I’ve participated every single year. Artomobilia is an extremely large show that has a wide range of cars, and it’s the number of makes, styles and classes that are grouped and shown that is one of Artomobilia’s strongest assets in comparison to the many other shows that I’ve attended and/or participated in.” Eric has had a lifelong passion for cars and collecting that began as soon as his foot hit the gas pedal of his very first car.

In terms of its driving capability, it’s a manual shift car, and it is absolutely fabulous to drive”

“I’m a young 75-year-old gentleman, and my wife and I have been married for 50 years,” he proudly shared. “My wife knew when she married me that cars would be a part of our long-term relationship. I bought my first car the day that I got my driver’s license at age 16. I had already saved up my money, and I’ve been buying, selling and upgrading cars ever since.” Eric explained what makes his 2015 Ford GT such a pleasurable road car to drive. “In terms of its driving capability, it’s a manual shift car, and it is absolutely fabulous to drive,” he enthused. “It is easy to drive – easy clutch and easy to shift. It just makes all the right sounds and has the right appearance from any angle, and if you want absolute raw power, it’s there on the other end of the continuum.”

This year’s annual Songbook Celebration Gala will feature performer Chris Isaak at the Palladium September 15 while celebrating the Center for the Performing Art’s affiliation with the Great American Songbook Foundation. Five-time Grammy nominee Michael Feinstein, founder of the Foundation and artistic director at the Center, will lead tributes to this year’s Songbook Hall of Fame inductees: Academy Award-winning composer Jimmy Van Heusen, singer-actress Rosemary Clooney and musical theater star Marilyn Maye.

e sat down with Jeff McDermott to discuss the history of the annual gala and the impact that the fundraiser has on the Center’s outreach and education programs. “This will be our seventh gala, and two of those previous [galas] were once two-night events where we would have the dinner portion at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis, and the following evening, we would have the Hall of Fame induction, performances and after-party at the Palladium,” McDermott recalled. “Once we got the festival floor donated, we were able to have the dinner portion and the entire program all in one night and all in the Palladium.” The funds generated from the annual gala support the Center’s educational programs, such as Peanut Butter & Jam, KAR Front Seat, Artist Outreach, Dance Discovery Series, Musical Images of Indiana, Science of Sound and several other classes that are available to children and the public. The funds allow the Center’s staff to build upon the existing catalog of programs and to expand upon it. Attending the gala is a fun-filled way to support the Center’s initiatives while enjoying a star-studded, elegant black-tie affair with a few hundred of your closest friends and colleagues. “When we put in our festival floor, it creates a unique atmosphere within the Palladium that people who don’t attend the gala rarely see,” McDermott shared. “We can sit hundreds of people for dinner on the festival floor, which rests above the orchestra seats, turning the entire hall into a dinner theater.” McDermott shared a few “fun facts” about this year’s HOF inductees. “We’ve got a great lineup of inductees this year in our Great American Songbook Hall of Fame, which has become a traditional part of the gala evening,” he said. “Jimmy Van Heusen is a songwriter who many may not recognize, but they have certainly heard his songs. He wrote a vast majority of songs that were performed by Frank Sinatra and many others. Rosemary Clooney, the late great

Carmel_2018August_Songbook Gala.indd 2

performer, will also be inducted. We’ve got a special sentiment for her for a variety of reasons. Rosemary was like a second mother to Michael Feinstein, and her daughter, Maria Ferrer, is a member of the Great American Songbook Foundation’s board of directors. And Marilyn Maye, who is in her early 90s and who performs hundreds of shows a year, will accept her HOF award and will also perform live.” McDermott shared that Maye is believed to hold the record for the most appearances on “The Tonight Show” with the late Johnny Carson. “We’ll have Chris Isaak performing as the headliner this year,” McDermott confirmed. “He follows Kristin Chenoweth who performed last year. It’s kind of a new format that we’ve instituted in the last couple of years. We had Storm Large perform the year before that, and we are constantly coming up with new ways to make the gala new and different by bringing in new headliners every year who add a different dimension to the gala.” The gala attendees will enjoy a live auction with four or five spectacular excursions or “experiences” to bid on. Following the induction, dinner and performances, attendees who have purchased tickets to the after-party will enjoy several bands, food and beverages throughout the Palla-

dium into the late night hours. “There’s a sense of excitement that surrounds the evening because there are so many aspects of things going on,” McDermott concluded. “Every year, we add new touches and surprises, and I can guarantee some surprises for this year.” Under the theme “Swinging on a Star” – a tune written by Van Heusen and famously performed by Clooney – the Songbook Celebration begins with the 5 p.m. First Merchants Bank Cocktail Reception and continues with an elegant dinner in the concert hall, live auction, program and after-party. Tickets for the after-dinner portion of the evening are available at the Palladium Box Office, online at TheCenterPresents.org or by phone at 317-843-3800. Starting at $100, the tickets include gallery or box seating for the 8:30 p.m. Songbook Hall of Fame induction ceremony, followed by Isaak’s headline performance as well as admission to the all-inclusive after-party with dancing and complimentary drinks and desserts in three uniquely themed rooms from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tables seating 4-10 guests for the entire evening are available for purchase by emailing Sheila Morone at SongbookGala@TheCenterPresents.org.

Since 1953, families from Zionsville and the surrounding communities have participated in the Zionsville Fall Festival’s lively festivities that include a carnival in Lions Park and an annual parade that marches down the historic bricks of Main Street in downtown Zionsville.

T

he festival weekend, presented by Zionsville Lions Club, attracts over 20,000 people from all over Indiana and beyond. This year’s Zionsville Fall Festival begins Friday, September 7 and concludes Sunday, September 9. What some people may not realize is that the VIP (Very Important People) Carnival night that kicks off the Fall Festival on Friday night is designed to cater especially to families and caregivers who have members with special needs. The goal of the event is to provide special needs’ families with a friendly environment where “kids can be kids” and enjoy the American tradition of a carnival. The VIP Carnival is presented by the Zionsville Lions Club and HAWK Foundation and takes place in downtown Zionsville. It is totally free, so no additional financial

Carmel_2018August_Lions Club Fall Fest.indd 1

burden is placed on the family/caregivers whose goal should be to simply enjoy a family night out. Zionsville Lions Club President Mike Moran, a resident of west Carmel, would like for families and caregivers of individuals with special needs from any community to come out and enjoy the carnival, especially if they have never experienced it before. “The whole community is welcome,” Moran said. “We want to make sure that the general public knows that the carnival is open for everyone that evening, but it is only free to VIPs and their families/ caregivers. Our VIPs and their families/ caregivers are asked to register online, and they will be given wristbands for entry and access to the carnival rides, games and free food that will be provided by Chick-fil-A that evening. We also have our volunteers on-hand who will be helping our VIPs with getting them on and off the rides. The event starts at 5 p.m., and the rides will open at 6 p.m.” Paul Dreier, Zionsville Lions Club member and HAWK Foundation founding board members, shared with us that the VIP Carnival continues to grow by 200400 attendees each passing year. Last year, the VIP Carnival entertained 1,600 VIPs and their families/caregivers. “Some families drive longer than the event itself,” Dreier said. “We have people that come from Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio to attend this event.” With regards to the volunteers who come out to assist the VIPs that evening,

Dreier mentioned the Zionsville Best Buddies group as being a highly visible group that comes out among other incredible volunteers that night. “The Zionsville Best Buddies group is the largest in the nation,” Dreier said. “The entire local Best Buddies group shows up to volunteer at the VIP Carnival wearing their Best Buddies T-shirts, and they ride along with the VIPs when the parents or caregivers can’t ride along with them. We also have a number of service provider and organization tents. This year, we are approaching 20 different services, and most of them are free. These providers and organizations help families with special needs with things like funding for wheelchairs and other special equipment needed to care for their child. And we even have two ladies who come every year who own massage therapies, and they give away free massage therapies to the caregivers.” Dreier emphasized that families and caregivers need to register online for the VIP Carnival, so they can get the extra free gifts and other perks that are provided by the event’s sponsorships and so the organizers have an accurate headcount for meals, etc. To register for the VIP Carnival, visit thehawkfoundation.org. Moran listed this year’s Fall Festival highlights as being the VIP Carnival on Friday, the parade the following morning and the big silent auction on Saturday. “We’ve also got the ‘Impalas’ performing again this year at the Lions Lounge that opens at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The band will perform beginning at 7 p.m. that evening. The beer lines were very popular among the adults. We’ve had great feedback from the attendees on the Lions Lounge and the ‘Impalas,’ so we keep inviting them back because they keep the crowd going, and it’s a great time.” To participate in the silent auction and support the Lion’s Club’s activities, visit qtego.net/auc/zlc. You can review items up for bid, register your mobile phone and start bidding. Carmel Clay Schools Announces Safety Forum with Live Stream

Student Safety

A Community Conversation CARMEL CLAY SCHOOLS INVITES THE COMMUNITY TO JOIN IN A DISCUSSION ABOUT SCHOOL SAFETY WITH CITY AND SCHOOL LEADERS

Wednesday, August 8th

6:30 P.M. Carmel Middle School 300 S. Guilford Road Facebook livestream will be available thanks to Carmel Monthly www.facebook.com/CarmelMag

Carmel Clay Schools (CCS) will be hosting a Safety Forum Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at Carmel Middle School located at 300 S. Guilford Road. The forum will be lead by Dr. Michael Beresford, superintendent at CCS, other CCS administrators and City of Carmel officials. “The purpose of the Community Conversation on Student Safety is to share information to give our parents and community a little “look behind the curtain” on some of the layers of school safety at Carmel Clay Schools, Beresford stated. “A panel of law enforcement and school staff will present safety information and we will have a process for attendees to share their questions with the panel. While we can’t share detailed information that would compromise our safety program, we want our school community to as informed as possible.” CCS is encouraging the members of community to attend the forum and participate in the conversation. CCS has partnered with Carmel Monthly to offer a live stream of the forum for those unable to be in attendance. Viewers can watch the live stream on Facebook by following Carmel Monthly Magazine.

Koto Japanese Steak House Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // JJ Kaplan and submitted

Koto Japanese Steak House, located at 14490 Lowes Way in Carmel, offers its customers outstanding sushi and hibachi dishes in a terrific atmosphere. Recently, we caught up with Ren Yang, one of the co-owners, to talk about what they have to offer now and their plans for the future.

Y

ang emphasized that Koto is dedicated to providing the highest quality food and service to its customers. You will find that the sushi at Koto is always fresh and prepared to perfection by Sushi Chef Jeremy Liu and his staff. Liu trained in New York for 10 years to be a sushi chef before taking over his duties in Carmel. He has been at Koto since it opened. In addition to Chef Liu, Koto’s hibachi chef also trained for 10 years. All of Koto’s hibachi chefs must have at least three years of training before they can become one of the knife-wielding, food-flipping acrobats performing at the hibachi grill,

making every meal an event. There is no better way to have an engaging dining experience with a large group of family or friends than the hibachi experience at Koto. The seating around a hibachi grill can accommodate groups of 18-20. Although Koto has 14 hibachi grills, it is always a good idea to make reservations for a large group. Anyone who has been there knows Koto can make birthdays and other special events fun and entertaining. People naturally think of a place like Koto for dinner and large parties and many times forget that it is also a great place for a light lunch. If you find yourself near the Clay Terrace area during

the day drop by Koto for some sushi and cup of soup. It’s a great way to break the burger and deli lunch grind. In addition to sushi/sashimi and hibachi meals, the large meu also offers some traditional Asian dishes such as teriyaki, tempura and mainstays such as General Tso’s chicken and sesame chicken. They also offer a traditional dining area, if you would like more intimate dining atmosphere. Yang shared that the Carmel location will be undergoing a bit of a makeover this summer. The plan is to offer covered outdoor dining in the newly renovated patio in August.

As a result of the success of Koto Japanese Steak House, it has added a fourth location at Hamilton Town Center in Noblesville. Like the Carmel location, it will have 14 hibachi grills and outdoor seating along with outstanding sushi and hibachi meals. The owners have taken from what they have learned at their three other locations in designing the Noblesville location. The other two locations are located in Kentucky and Tennessee. Koto is currently offering great value on gift cards where the card purchasers receive a second bonus card that they can use at the restaurant. The value of the bonus card varies with the amount of the gift card. As an example, a $100 gift card gets a $10 bonus card for the purchaser. It’s a great way to treat a friend and yourself at the same time. Yang wanted to let everyone know that the road construction just south of the restaurant will not affect the restaurant’s hours of operation or service. They are

Heartland Film, Inc. announced an all-new film festival in support of its annual Heartland International Film Festival that takes place in October. Indy Shorts International Film Fest (Indy Shorts) exclusively showcased short films (under 40 minutes in length) this past July at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. A few familiar faces about Carmel and their remarkable talents were featured at Indy Shorts, putting Carmel on the map, once again, in the arts and film scenes.

i Grateful: The Jenny Berebitsky Stor The story of “Grateful” is a documentary on the exceptional life of Jenni Berebitsky who has been fighting Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) since 2009. Directed by Paul W. Nethercott and produced by Amy Pauszek, executive producer of the film, “Grateful” debuted at Indy Shorts last month, moving its audience and raising awareness to the effects

of ALS. Justin Park, Carmel High School (CHS) graduate and filmmaker, worked with Nethercott and Pauszek on this film as the Director of Photography. Park also submitted the film, “You’ve Been on My Mind,” in the Indy Shorts’ High School category. We sat down with Nethercott and Pauszek to discuss the process of creating a documentary alongside someone digressing

from the debilitating effects of ALS as well as the emotional roller coaster ride that comes with witnessing some of the most intimate moments of someone’s suffering and surviving. Nethercott, Pauszek and Park all came together after having met at Heartland where the three had their respective submissions. “I had a film in Heartland last October called “Abstraction.” It was a short documentary finalist, and I met Amy and Justin,” Nethercott said. “All of this happened because of meeting filmmakers at Heartland.” Nethercott was approached at Heartland to do a documentary on Berebitsky, and after meeting with her and her family and upon compiling a team that included Pauszek and Park, the film was under production. “This is my first film in Indiana,” Nethercott said. “I’m working on getting established as a filmmaker here and am grateful that this film, and this story created the opportunity to work with Amy and Justin, his high school friends and a lot of other great people.” Pauszek has deep roots within the Heartland Film Festival and over 15 years of experience with the festival, both as a filmmaker and as a volunteer. She has covered and photographed countless events related to the festival and sits on the Truly Moving Picture Award jury where she originally met Berebitsky who also sat on the jury. “I have a love for film and having attended Heartland and volunteered for as long as I have, I’ve met so many filmmakers,” Pauszek shared. “It’s been a phenomenal opportunity for me not only as a producer but as an actress in films to have exclusive interviews and photo shoots with some of the major stars. I’ve been able to forge friendships with directors and filmmakers from all over the world.” Pauszek praised Nethercott for his ability to capture Berebitsky’s life in a meaningful 17-minute short. “I give kudos to Paul because he took the lifelong journey of somebody and condensed it into a 17- minute short. And yet it flows so well and beautifully, and I’m very proud of it,” Pauszek stated. “Once I got involved with the film, I really realized how hard it must be to live with ALS, which

AUGUST 2018

2018-07-26 1:18 PM

was something that I was unfamiliar with. It [producing the film] has been such an eye opener, and I don’t think people realize that people with ALS are very intelligent people. They have it all in their mind, but they can’t express their thoughts and needs physically. At the end of this documentary, you’ll leave the theater feeling courageous and inspired. I think people will have a new perspective on their lives and will feel grateful for their lives. Paul captures Jenni’s life so well, Jenni’s eyes lit up when she watched the film for the first time. This superhero of a woman has made it so wonderful for us as filmmakers, and I think her story will resonate with everyone who sees it.” Nethercott added, “Amy brought to this film fantastic networking and her promotional ability and her input on the film itself in terms of content and flow. One of the realities of this film was that Jenni has a short period of time left in her life, which she is fully aware of, and she discusses it in the film. She has been on hospice care for over two years. When I met Jenni at the end of last October and discussed the film, I knew that we had to move fast. I asked Justin to work with me, and he pulled together his high school friends. And we got it done with good results, good audio and good camera work.” Two of Nethercott and Pauszek’s favorite quotes from Berebitsky within the documentary are at the beginning of the film when she says, “ALS is a tricky, tricky disease.” When she reflected back upon her life, she said, “To live a normal life is ordinary. I live an extraordinary life. There is beauty and humor everywhere.” “Jenni’s quote gives the film an evocative start,” Nethercott said. “The ending is really delightful, and it reflects Jenni’s fun personality and her ability to smile and find humor in life in spite of the incredible challenges that she faces having ALS. The entire story, her story and the film are a hero’s journey.” Follow Paul Nethercott and Amy Pauszek on Facebook for upcoming screenings and news as they take “Grateful” beyond Heartland Film Festival. With the donations received by supporters/backers, the two are working to feature the film with a brand new score in various locations across the globe.

“You’ve Been on My Mind” Park’s film, “Kara Deady: The Pole Vaulter” was the Indiana Documentary Winner in last year’s Heartland Film Festival’s High School Competition. Using that experience, Park, along with his dedicated cast and crew, entered the film, “You’ve Been on My Mind,” in last month’s Indy Shorts. Park is from Seoul, Korea, and moved to Carmel his freshman year of high school after studying at the British School of Guangzhou in China. Acclimating wasn’t incredibly difficult for Park as he was immersed in Western culture as well as the arts at the British School. “My parents have an art background, and art has always been around me,” Park said. “We’ve always gone to shows and visited art museums. What is funny is that I thought that I was going to be an actor for a while, and after I moved to Carmel, I realized that I am not the best actor. But I was into photography and theater, and I also joined Carmel’s CHTV. All of those formed an interest in filmmaking.” After his freshman year, Park attended a film camp in Los Angeles and said that is where his interest matured into a full-on passion once he had hands-on experience with the craft of making films. “I really enjoyed it [camp], and after I came back, I just kept making films,” he said. “I’ve been meeting new people, working on new projects and have just kept going on from there.” Park’s latest complete film and submission to Indy Shorts, “You’ve Been on My Mind,” is about a high school screenwriter “Tom” who struggles to finish his script about loneliness until he meets “Amelia.” The film’s script is unique and intriguing while the scene transitions are seamless and captivate the audience throughout the dance sequences.

Park had set a goal to submit the film his junior year, but as production schedules most often go, he and his cast and crew found themselves in an artistic purgatory and had to work around the pitfalls and obstacles that arise in producing films and coordinating a myriad of schedules. “We [the cast and crew] were lucky to finish it [the film] before graduating,” Park said. “When I was at Heartland last year, something that really hurt me was that while I was honored to be part of the film festival and had a great time, I knew that the entire cast and crew of ‘You’ve Been on My Mind’ had been working extremely hard and were frustrated at many times and were beginning to lose faith in the film. Because they had worked so hard, I have wanted these guys to be able to feel the same excitement and joy of seeing their accomplishments come to fruition. I was really sad that it couldn’t happen last year, but I was so happy when the moment finally came to submit our film. I felt like I could repay all of these people with a little bit of joy and hopefully pride because they worked so hard, and I am so grateful that they believed in the film.”

Park and his crew filmed several scenes throughout Carmel, including the Carmel Clay Public Library, Carmel High School, Keystone Landmark Theater, Hoosier Salon, Donatello’s, Zing Café in the Village of WestClay and his own backyard. Two members of the film’s cast and crew, Ayden Stewart and Emma Hedrick, shared some of the challenges and what this experience has been like for each of them. Stewart, a senior at CHS, played “Tom.” “The biggest challenge for Madeline [Hatfield], who plays the female lead, and I was that we started this in the winter around December,” Stewart said. “Madeline and I are both heavily involved in the winter production shows, and show choir gets extremely busy at the end of January through the beginning of March. Prior to that time period, we were filming three to four times a week. So we had to find time to shoot and practice and also work with the businesses’ hours at the different locations that we filmed at.” Stewart said that his role of “Tom” and being part of the film has been a confidence boost for him. “It’s hard to do something while in high school and have people look at it like it’s a real accomplishment,” he said. “I’m excited for people to see our film and see that it’s not just

a ‘high school’ film, but it is a good film.” Hedrick, whose band “Main Street Jazz Band” has been performing around Carmel for the last four years, performed the film’s score that she composed. She just graduated from CHS. “Justin asked me if I’d be interested in composing for the film, and I was taken aback because I’ve not spent a lot of time composing; just mostly arranging. But it turned out to be really fun, and I’ve learned a lot about how to make arrangements for film. I’m happy with the work that everyone has put into this and am excited that it made it into the festival. This was my first attempt at composing, so from a music standpoint, I’m just happy that I tried something new and that it worked out. I think that it’s been an important learning step as I’m seeing where my music can take me.” Park added, “One of the things that makes our film unique is that the whole score is composed entirely by high school students. Emma and her team are very talented jazz musicians. They had not done anything filmrelated before, and I had never worked with non-composing musicians, so figuring it out together and completing those first steps was a bit of a challenge, but we worked through it.”

Carmel Farmers Market Thanks its Longtime Vendors Writer // Janelle Morrison

For the Carmel Farmers Market (CFM), the support of not only the market-goers but the vendors has been instrumental in the market’s growth and success over the last 20 years. Ron Carter, CFM president, took some time to share with us the 14 vendors that have been with CFM the longest. In the case of Phelps Family Farms, this vendor has not missed a Saturday since the very first CFM summer market!

“W

e have provided, as a market, a venue for these 14 vendors and the many other vendors who have not been with us as long as these 14 that allows them to grow their businesses and, in some cases, be able to sustain farms that they may not have otherwise been able to sustain,” Carter said. “It has been great to be able to watch them grow and to watch some of their kids grow that have been with us from the very start of the market. We’ve watched as these kids have matured and learn to count money and change, look people in the eye and become young entrepreneurs in their own rights.” In good weather and bad, in times of feast and famine, following CFM from its original location to the big move to Center Green, the vendors and the folks at CFM have experienced many highs and lows together, but they worked through it all together and have made each other stronger, forging strong friendships and bonds. Carter added, “It has been very fulfilling to be able to work with all of our vendors but especially the 14 that have been with us for so long. We’ve had such great relationships with our vendors over the years. When we first started out, we wanted to make sure that we had an affordable market and that we had the best market from a facilities standpoint and from a management standpoint overall. I think that these

vendors in particular have recognized that and see the value of being at the Carmel Farmers Market. For most of our vendors, it [the market] is their number one market, and we appreciate that very much. We also appreciate that they bring such high-quality products and have for such a long time to the guests that come to the Carmel Farmers Market.”
