Long-Sharp Gallery Named One of the World’s Best
If you visited Long-Sharp Gallery in downtown Indianapolis in 2017, you saw works by local, regional, national and international artists. The gallery featured six exhibits last year: a solo show for Dale Enochs, one of Indiana’s most celebrated sculptors; an exhibit of original Andy Warhol drawings from the 1950s; and an exhibit celebrating women in the arts that featured works by eight accomplished female artists, just to name a few. Writer // Janelle Morrison
T
he gallery was founded initially as a small consulting business in the early 2000s by then-practicing death row defense attorney Rhonda Long-Sharp. As Long-Sharp will tell you herself, she always harbored a love for art, but she opened a gallery after seeing the “underbelly of the art world.” Caught up in her passion for art and the ability to afford it after she and her husband paid off their graduate school loans, they purchased two fakes: a fake Picasso and a fake Dalí. It was this experience that catalyzed Long-Sharp to do lots of research, broaden her education and open that small consulting business a few years later. She handled mostly works by modern masters: Warhol, Lichtenstein, Haring and, not by happenstance, Picasso and Dalí. As sometimes happens with a lot of love, a lot of effort and skill, and a little bit of luck, Long-Sharp’s consulting business expanded, but she never intended to open a gallery space. It was only when Long-Sharp decided to expand her artist roster to living artists that she decided to open a brick and mortar gallery space. After all, part of representing living artists meant having walls on which to display their works.

With the question of “why” to open a gallery settled, the question of “where” to open it was answered by serendipity and, as it often seems to follow with Long-Sharp, ingenuity. When Conrad Indianapolis approached an artist about hanging her art on the hotel’s walls, neither party could have imagined that 10 years later, not only would that artist’s works hang in the hotel, but the hotel would house an internationally acclaimed art gallery, an award-winning art program, several themed art suites, rotating exhibits throughout the hotel and a team of trained “Art Ambassadors” to answer questions about that art. All of this was the brainchild of Long-Sharp and Conrad General Manager Greg Tinsley. Thus, Long-Sharp Gallery found its home in the Conrad in 2012. Why open a gallery in Indianapolis at all? “Because Indianapolis is home,” says Long-Sharp. “We’ve expanded quite a bit since 2012. We exhibit at art fairs worldwide and have a gallery space in Midtown Manhattan … but Indianapolis is home, and that is important.” The gallery still handles drawings, prints and paintings by those artists on which Long-Sharp founded her business, but it also represents works by several living artists, many of whom have studios in Indiana.
“My husband and I have been collecting art by Indiana artists for decades,” says Long-Sharp. “The more I looked in Indiana artists’ studios – that of Amy Kirchner, Constance Edwards Scopelitis, Jason Myers, Dale Enochs or others – the more apparent it became that there is something amazing going on here. I enjoy exhibiting works by Indiana artists alongside Warhol, Picasso or others. That speaks to the gallery’s identity and its respect for artists who create close to home.” The gallery has been quick to gain accolades. For example, it has been named one of the world’s top 500 galleries (the only one in Indianapolis and one of only six in the Midwest). It has been accepted into and exhibits annually at one of the world’s most highly vetted and respected art fairs, Masterpiece London. “All art fairs are not created equal,” says Long-Sharp. “Masterpiece [London] conducts rigorous vetting of its galleries and for authenticity and the condition of each work exhibited. It is that connoisseurship upon which our gallery was founded.” Why successful? Long-Sharp attributes the gallery’s success to three factors: 1) a strong sense of business and industry ethics; 2) an inventory of important blue chip and contemporary work (the gallery owns the blue chip works

it exhibits); and 3) “an unparalleled group of intelligent and hardworking staff.” The gallery is also “collector friendly” since that is how the business was started – from a collector’s perspective. Prices are posted; relevant public auction comparisons are shared; and works are sent out on approval (be those works delivered to Indianapolis or London) because it is important to see the works in the space they will live. Long-Sharp Gallery is a certified WBE (Women’s Business Enterprise), a member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and a member of LAPADA (a London-based association of fine art and antiques dealers) while Long-Sharp is a member of the IFAA (appraisal association).

The Carmel Youth Assistance Program (CYAP) will host its second annual Carmel Gala, “Design Bright Futures,” with its honorary chair, Mayor Jim Brainard, on Saturday, April 28. All proceeds will benefit CYAP programs that provide assistance to Carmel youth and their families.
C
YAP was formed in the fall of 2015 to help strengthen youth and families through community involvement. CYAP works in collaboration with the Carmel Clay School District, City of Carmel and the Hamilton County Superior Court. CYAP is a franchise of a great concept that was started in Hamilton County. The Early Intervention Advocates in each community work under the appointment of Judge Paul Felix, Hamilton County Circuit Court, and Judge Steven Nation, Hamilton County Superior Court 1. Melanie Lentz, ex-officio, CYAP board member, spoke about the Gala’s success last year and how the nearly $60,000 raised supported CYAP services, including the inaugural Carmel Summer Lunch Program. “The Gala raised just under $60,000 its inaugural year, and a little more than 300 people attended,” Lentz said. “We
exceeded our expectations as far as the amount that was raised. The proceeds were used to support the Carmel Summer Lunch Program that fed 135 youth in Carmel who received breakfast and lunch for the five days that they would normally receive a meal at school. The program ran for all 11 weeks of summer. The cost to feed each youth was $1.30 per child per day. One in seven youth in Hamilton County is considered food insecure. This program and the donations given at the Gala definitely make a difference to those youth and their families.” The Carmel Gala is the primary fundraiser for all of CYAP’s programs and services. Maggie Figge, early intervention advocate at CYAP, introduced us to CYAP mentee Ali Mohamed, his mother Deena Fahim and his mentor Mitch Appelsies, a Carmel resident. Figge emphasized the importance of CYAP’s mentoring

programs and how it has helped Carmel youth like Mohamed. “One of our goals with mentoring for Ali was to give him something to look forward to and someone that was going to invest in him and make him feel good,” Figge said. “Ali’s had a lot of big transitions in his life. For a sixth grade kid, he’s had a lot to deal with.” Appelsies has raised three daughters of his own and was looking for something that would allow him to “pay it forward.” His daughters had read about CYAP and introduced the program to Appelsies who then contacted Figge. “I’ve always had an affinity for kids,” Appelsies said. “I started the process with Maggie and decided that it [mentoring] was a good fit for me. Then, I got really lucky and got paired with this guy [Ali] last September, and it’s been awesome.” Mohamed lives with his mother and

two sisters. He enjoys health and gym class and playing the violin in the school orchestra. Mohamed is also an avid video game player and enjoys playing with his mentor, Appelsies, more than with his sisters. “Ali told me that the reason why he wanted to do the mentor/mentee program was because he has two sisters, and he always wanted an older brother,” Appelsies jested. “a real old brother.” Mohamed and Appelsies enjoy many activities together and have shared holidays together as extended family. They enjoy everything from a day at Dave and Buster’s and participating in the Carmel Ghosts and Goblins 5K to going to movies and special events and hanging out on the couch and watching movies. They even enjoy working on homework and school projects together. “It has been fulfilling and rewarding,” Appelsies emphasized. “I feel lucky to have not only Ali but his wonderful family. I’m learning things about his background and culture, and we have fun together. He makes me laugh and smile.”
Mohamed shared what he enjoys about hanging out with Appelsies. “We do things together and go places,” he said. “At home, they [my sisters] don’t really understand video games, and I end up playing on my own. My mom and sisters are always doing makeup and all that kind of stuff.” Mohamed has also joined the school’s Minecraft and comic book clubs. His mother has noticed a significant difference in her son’s personality and an improvement in his academics since joining the CYAP mentoring program. “In August, we will have lived here [Carmel] three years,” Fahim said. “He always looks forward to spending time with Mitch. He always asks, ‘When is Mitch coming over?’ I hear that all the time. He’s always excited. It has changed him. He is happier. He was going through a lot of emotions, and it is not as bad anymore. He’s always happy when he spends time with Mitch. And I don’t know what I would have done without Maggie. She’s helped us with so many things.” Fahim and Appelsies communicate reg-
ularly about Mohamed. The relationship has evolved into a friendship and support system for Fahim since she has no other support system locally. Her mother lives in Egypt and visits when she is able, but for the most part, Fahim has grown to trust Appelsies and seeks advice on matters that involve her son and her family. “Ali is getting exposure to many different things and life lessons,” Appelsies said. “I’m learning a lot from Ali as well, so it’s a win-win.” Please consider supporting the great work of CYAP and have a wonderful evening by attending the annual Carmel Gala, “Design Bright Futures.” For more information on CYAP, or becoming a mentor, contact Maggie Figge, Early Intervention Advocate, Carmel at maggie.figge@hamiltoncounty. in.gov or mfigge@ccs.k12.in.us. Our mobile pressure washing equipment is so much more than just a pressure washer,” says Golden. “We deliver the ability to use soft water, hot water, multiple cleaning agents and various dilution ratios while being able to adjust water pressure on the fly. Our trucks are truly cleaning machines. We do not rely on pressure to clean. Our proprietary cleaning agents clean the surface, and we use pressure to rinse.” Sparkle Wash will come out in person to provide a free quote for your home or commercial property. Tailored Living® featuring PremierGarage® The area of our home that is often ignored and unorganized is the garage. That’s where Tailored Living® featuring PremierGarage® excels. Owner Jon Elliott and his partner Tom Fleming have been in the business of providing the best in high-quality storage and home organization systems for both homes and businesses for 14 years. They offer free in-home or onsite consultations, expert measurement, innovative design and professional installation,
providing custom-tailored transformation according to your needs and specifications. If your garage is in dire need of transformation, that’s where their Total Garage Enhancement comes in. “Our designers create garage storage systems and organization solutions that work using a combination of garage cabinets, shelves, Slatwall wall storage systems, overhead racks and custom garage flooring,” says Elliott. “Your garage will be transformed into a masterpiece of utility and beauty, making garage organization a part of everyday life.” Elliott says custom garage cabinets give a clean, uniform look to your garage. “Cabinets bring order out of chaos by hiding everything behind closed doors. Clutter and piles are eliminated, and there’s a designated place for every item in the garage,” he says. If you have sports equipment and large tools like rakes, shovels and hoses, Elliott suggests you consider open wall storage, so nothing is stacked on the floor, creating a safety hazard.
Elliott maintains, however, that no garage design is truly complete without new garage flooring. “We offer custom garage floor coatings, which add beauty and utility, giving your garage a finished look and making it a more user-friendly space,” he says. Tailored Living® featuring PremierGarage® offers a wide variety of color and finish options, so you can coordinate your floor with garage cabinets, your car or even your favorite team’s logo. And all garage flooring options are designed to withstand the high traffic and heavy use that a garage endures on a daily basis. The low-maintenance floor is easier to care for than concrete, creating the ideal floor for a busy garage. PremierOne® floor coatings are the toughest floor coatings available and are a proprietary blend. Elliott says every floor will retain color and finish integrity for years to come. You can contact Tailored Living® featuring PremierGarage® at 317-842-4272 and tailoredliving.com/indy.

Nature’s Choice Landscaping Our yards often take a beating over the winter, and for many people, getting their yard in shape is the first order of business in the spring. Nature’s Choice Landscaping is ready to take care of all your yard and landscaping needs. In business for 30 years, Nature’s Choice is a full-service landscape maintenance company with a retail garden center. Nature’s Choice provides a long list of services, including bare ground grass and weed control, lawn care applications, landscape recommendations and installations, mulch install and treatment, seeding and aeration, irrigation maintenance, tree and shrub pruning and removal and more. Owner Steve Cousins says this time of year, his company focuses on softscape installation, such as landscape bed makeovers. “Even well-maintained landscape beds may become very mature and overgrown after 10 or so years and may be in need of a touchup or a complete overhaul,” he says. He says many newly built homes may not have the type of plantings and design that the owner desires, and sometimes the species of plants selected may not match the area in which they are planted. “This is a great time of year to do a complete renovation or simply replace several items, such as trees, shrubs and
perennials. Or simply adding accents, such as boulders, stepping stones, fountains and/or flowering plants, to existing landscapes can greatly enhance your outdoor landscapes. And even a beautiful landscape could use an annual touchup by performing bed edging and adding a fresh layer of mulch,” says Cousins. He points out that his team of professionals has over 150 years of experience in horticulture, arborist services and softscape design and installation and is fully insured and licensed or certified in pest control and fertilization of turf, trees, shrubs and ponds. Additionally, he says that owning a Garden Center provides his clients with lots of plant and accent materials to choose from. “A new or fresh landscape will improve the look of your property, help property values, increase curb appeal and just allow you to enjoy your outdoor living space. Also, this type of work can be done over time to match any budget,” says Cousins. Nature’s Choice Landscaping is located at 3760 N. State Rd. 267, Brownsburg, IN 46112. You can contact them at 317-852-2647 or NaturesChoiceLandscaping.com.

Home Improvement tailor-made services for each client, offering either full design and construction services from demolition to completion of project or working with a client’s remodeler or builder to execute his plans. In addition, Banter offers a complimentary one-hour consultation to sit down and discuss a project with a client. “The complimentary service would give the client a one-on-one meeting with me, learn about my design philosophy and get a little information and insight as to how I would approach their project without any obligation,” he says. Banter says the number one thing about him is that he listens to his clients. “I absorb the meaning and significance behind their spoken words and design a ‘personal living space’ based on those words,” he says. “My vision is my own. Selftaught, not influenced by the principles of past design periods. I make it a point to include inspiration from art, the fashion industry and any creative endeavor.” He says he often includes a unique piece, sometimes whimsical or quirky, to incorporate into his designs, which personalizes the client’s living space. Banter says he’s unique in another way too: “My openness and desire to reach outside the typical room design, especially the kitchen, to create a one-of-a-kind room for all my clients.” You can contact Design by RLB by calling 224-688-3942, visiting designbyrlb.com or emailing rick@designbyrlb.com.

I had a regular tune-up with Airtron and John was my service provider. He was great to work with. John helped me to understand the more technical aspects of my heating system. He took the time to look at my unit together with me and discuss options for managing my filtration system. His attention to those details and meeting me, the customer, halfway definitely made a difference. - Margaret C.
I have been using Airtron for four years since we moved here. I have found them to be prompt, courteous and competent. They serviced our old unit and installed a humidifier. When the 20+ year old furnace finally gave out, they sold and installed a new furnace and AC. Their maintenance service also is excellent. The service people are efficient and clearly know what they are doing. I have had nothing but positive experiences with Airtron. - Marcia

PINK MARTINI AT THE PALLADIUM

We interviewed would eventually lead to the genesis of Lauderdale who had some Hoosier roots in Pink Martini.
PALLADIUM: MARCH 17
What was your early childhood like with your family in Indiana? I had a pastural upbringing amidst the fireflies and thunderstorms. My parents had a plant nursery, Lauderdale Nursery, just north of Manchester and west of Warsaw, Indiana, on State Road 14. My parents were Caucasian and adopted a “rainbow tribe” of children. My parents were from the earnest side of the 1960s. While they weren’t particularly musical, they listened to music. My childhood consisted of Ray Thomas, Ray Charles, Roger Miller, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the soundtrack to “Jesus Christ Superstar.” When did you begin your classical piano training? I started piano at age 6 with Patricia (Pat) Garrison who was from the area and later with Joyanne Jones at Indiana University– Purdue University in Fort Wayne. What prompted your family to leave northern Indiana and move west to Portland, Oregon? In 1980, my father came “out of the closet,” and my parents divorced but remained close friends. This is unusual, even for today. My parents had discussed this before they married, but some people thought that if you got married, “it” [homosexuality] would go away. My mother wasn’t “tricked,” and I think that’s why they remained close afterward. We all moved to Portland to keep my family together. You attended Harvard University but not for musical studies. You graduated cum laude with a degree in History and Literature. What was your intended area of study? I thought that I was going to go into politics. I wanted to become Mayor of Portland. I wanted a broader education, applied to liberal arts colleges and ended up going to Harvard. As a sophomore, I could select where I wanted to live, so I lived in Shattuck International House. It was very well landscaped and was a concentrated house full of “freaks” and brilliant people. It was like going to a completely different school and was different from the rest of campus. I really blossomed there. When I went back to Oregon, I had a contract with the Oregon Symphony to play classical pieces and went to work in politics.

What made you divert to a totally different career path? In 1994, there was an attempt to make homosexuality illegal in Oregon. I was working on the campaign in opposition to it. I had just seen the Del Rubio Triplets on Pee Wee Herman’s Christmas Special. That special featured several major stars like Cher, Grace Jones, Frankie Avalon, k.d. lang, Charo, Oprah Winfrey, Magic Johnson and many more. The Del Rubio Triplets were super Catholic but pro-gay. They played guitar and sang covers of songs like “Walk like an Egyptian” and “Whip It.” I brought them into town to sing at local nursing homes, retirement homes and hospitals. At the end of their set, they would say, “Please vote no to Measure 13.” They were performing at a community fundraising concert and needed an opening act, so I threw on a cocktail dress and started playing. (Lauderdale was joined by a bass player, bongo player and a singer, and Pink Martini was born.)
Do you feel that you are making more of an impact as a musician rather than a politician? I never intended on becoming a band leader or ever being in a band. I thought I was going to try to become mayor, but as the years passed on, I realized that my career was going to be in music. Instead of working under fluorescent lights, we get to travel the world. Instead of “hate” mail, we get applause every night. Have you performed at the Palladium before? How long have you known Michael Feinstein? I haven’t seen the Palladium in person yet, but everybody that I talk to has told me that it is an unbelievable venue that sits in the center of Carmel, Indiana. I’ve known Michael for more than a decade. When I’m in New York City, I practice at his house. We recorded together for his more obscure tribute record to Sinatra (“The Sinatra Project”). Feinstein is one of the most important people working today in music and is certainly a champion of The Great American Songbook.
What should the audience expect at Pink Martini’s performance at the Palladium this month? The idea is that by the end of the night, everyone is out of their seats doing a conga line. Our audience is generally very diverse. We appeal to people of all ages, conservatives and liberals and everyone in between. We bring together people who normally would otherwise never sit under the same roof. The goal is to make people so deliriously happy that they will be enjoying a moment with one another despite any differences. “Weird Al” Yankovic: The Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour “Weird Al” Yankovic burst onto the scene over three decades ago and never looked back. For the first time in his storied career, the world’s foremost musical satirist and four-time Grammy-winner foregoes his usual high-octane, big-production show for an intimate evening of music, focusing on original (non-parody) songs from his 14-album catalog. After his 2016 world tour, including venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and Radio City Music Hall, this is a rare opportunity to get up-close and personal with this legendary performer. Weird Al’s most recent album Mandatory Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. In 2018 he will be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In these stripped-down shows, the British-born, Canada-raised artist shares behind-the-scenes stories and reveals the inspiration behind the songs.

Celtic Nights: Oceans of Hope
A native of Scotland, Paul Galbraith has shaken the world of classical guitar with his innovative style on the “Brahms Guitar,” an eight-string instrument he helped to design. Positioned like a cello and offering an additional octave beyond the standard guitar range, the revolutionary instrument opens new possibilities in technique and repertoire. Galbraith is known for his critically acclaimed recordings of works by Bach, Haydn and Brahms, as well as his own arrangements of folk tunes from various countries. The unique setup for this Palladium performance, with the audience seated on and around the stage, will create an intimate setting while making the most of the hall’s pristine acoustics.
This crew of singers, dancers and musicians champions the proud tradition of Celtic music and culture. ERIC DICK: From Carmel Dads’ Club to MLS First-Round Pick Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Sporting KC and submitted
Carmel’s own Eric Dick, the son of Randy and Nina Dick, has gone from scampering around the Carmel Dads’ Club soccer fields to dominating the collegiate fields at Butler University and finds himself today on a major league field at Sporting Kansas City. Dick made national news when he was selected as 13th pick of the first round in the 2018 Major League Soccer’s (MLS) draft earlier this year, the highest pick this season of a BIG EAST player.

he MLS, founded in 1993 and headquartered in NYC, is a men’s premier professional national soccer league sanctioned by U.S. Soccer. The league is comprised of 23 teams, 20 in the U.S. and 3 in Canada. The regular season runs from March to October. Prior to being drafted by Sporting Kansas City, Dick’s other recent accomplishments include being named 2017 United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American, 2017 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and most recently BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Dick’s path to being a first-round draft pick for MLS began in Carmel where he grew up playing soccer with his sisters and friends at the Carmel Dads’ Club and for Carmel Community Schools. Dick’s family moved from Roeland Park, a part of the Kansas City metropolitan area, to Carmel when he was 5. “I was involved in all kinds of stuff growing up,” Dick said. “I played in [Carmel] Dads’ Club soccer. Our team made the championship four years in a row, and we lost all four of those. I never won a Dads’ Club soccer championship, but I loved it. I played basketball and was involved in our neighborhood swim team. I also played Carmel Dads’ Club baseball, but as I got older, it’s been basketball and soccer my entire life. Once I got to high school, I really focused mainly on soccer.” Dick says he was as an energetic kid who “spent a lot of energy on running around the soccer fields.” “I had a lot of energy as a little kid,” Dick said. “I still have a lot of energy. I was all over the field and played all different positions. As a kid, I just loved running around.” As a freshman at Carmel High School, Dick said he went into his freshman year not really expecting much of his developing soccer career. “I went into trials and was the only freshman goalie who tried out,” Dick said. “They put me on the freshmen team. We had such a great team and had a lot of fun. I tried to make the most out of that experience and make every practice count. I would go out and work for hours.
MARCH 2018

I would bike up to the Carmel Dads’ Club building and kick balls against the brick wall on the side of the building for hours, working on accuracy and doing ladder work and agility stuff. I put in hours and hours of work, and I had lots of help and support. I just took one day at a time, and I was lucky enough to get a varsity spot and played there [Carmel High School] for two years.” Dick played at the Indiana Fire Academy in the Development Academy League his senior year at CHS. “My senior year with the Academy
was when I began thinking that I could do this in college,” Dick said. “I embraced the position [goalie], but one thing that’s always stuck with me is my humility. I kept that throughout high school and college. I know that I always have a lot to improve on.” Dick graduated from CHS in 2013 and decided to play at Butler University. “I reached out to a bunch of schools and had planned to go to summer camps,” Dick said. “Being in the Academy system, it allowed for some of the schools to see me play. The Academy’s goalie coach Mike Sanich trained me in the Academy system, and he was the goalie coach at Butler [University] at that time. I honestly wasn’t considering Butler, and then once I started training with Mike, I realized that I really liked him. I hadn’t had a goalie coach that I was really passionate about before. “He made sure that I considered Butler, so I talked to their coaches and went to their winter camp, and it just set off from there. They [Butler University] had just joined the BIG EAST, which is a great con-
ference, and all of the coaches had international and MLS connections. Of course, Mike was there, so it was an easy decision. I went with my gut and knew that I felt very comfortable with that coaching staff. And it [Butler] was close to home, so my family could come and see the games.” Dick emphasized that throughout his high school and college career, there have been many friends and family supporting him. “I owe so many people so much,” he said. “I truly believe that the awards earned were a team effort and are team awards. Part of my team was not only the Butler team but my family. They’ve been the most supportive, the most sacrificing people I know. The countless hours of taking me to soccer trainings and sitting in their cars waiting for my practices to be done. I had friends that would drop everything and practice with me, and that may not have been the most fun for them. I am very lucky to have this many people in my life that have helped me get where I am today. I owe them everything.” Dick’s senior year at Butler earned him national recognition. He led the 2017

Bulldogs to a 14-5-2 overall record, a BIG EAST regular season championship, and an appearance in the NCAA Third Round. That postseason run matched the best finish in program history. The 6-5 goalkeeper earned first-team NCAA Division I All-America accolades as well as being named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. The All-BIG EAST First Team honoree had a BIG EAST-best nine shutouts on the season, posting a 0.97 goals against average and .820 save percentage. Dick’s nine shutouts were the most in a single season while his 28 career clean sheets are also a Butler best. In 2016, Dick helped Butler to a BIG EAST Tournament championship title and was named the BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Defensive Player. Dick graduated from Butler, majoring in Science, Technology and Society and minoring in Business and Spanish. His dreams of “going pro” in the MLS were about to be realized. Dick recalled the day of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft as being a “whirlwind of events.” “It started with my parents and me flying from Indy to Baltimore,” he said. “The morning of the draft, our flight got delayed, so we drove from Baltimore to Philly, and I was changing into my suit in the car. We weren’t even sure if we were going to get there. My head coach Paul Snape was already there, and he called us saying, ‘We’re here, and it [the draft] has started. My dad dropped us off, and my mom and I went into the convention
center. We totally missed the right entrance, and when we finally found it, they wouldn’t let us in the room because they were at max capacity. I frantically told them that I was one of the players. We were finally allowed in just as they were announcing the sixth pick. At that point, we were just trying to find my agent, my coach and a place to sit.” Dick recalled he and his parents finally met up with Coach Snape. The group had just begun talking when Dick’s agent suddenly grabbed him and whisked Dick away from his entourage, proclaiming that “he was up.” “The next thing I hear was, ‘For the 13th pick of the MLS Draft for Sporting Kansas City … Eric Dick.’ I literally blacked out walking to the stage. I really don’t know what I said to be honest. When I saw it played back, I was a little impressed because I managed to put in some solid words.” Dick said the rest of that weekend was a chaotic blur of returning home to Carmel, only to pack and report to his new team that following Monday. “I’m still sort of blown away,” Dick said. “It was a dream come true, and I was elated. I was born in Roeland Park near Kansas City, so it’s like a full circle thing, and the fact that I’m coming back to where I was born to play soccer is pretty cool.” Dick concluded, “Right now, I’m embracing it [the experience],” he said. “The college experience for me, every year, was a step for me, not only physically developing my skills, but also mentally. I’d say that’s the biggest area that I’m changed in over my four years in college, the mental aspect of being a professional on and off the field and also handling the goalkeeper position through all the highs and lows. It’s about staying positive and being positive. My goal is to inspire others. I knew coming in that I wanted to take it day by day and get a little better every day. It’s a process on a whole other level. It’s going to take time to get acclimated to this system, but I’m soaking it all in. I’m here because I know I can be here, and I want to show them [my team] that they’ve made a good investment and repay their faith in me. I try to do that every single day. I’m enjoying it every single practice.”

World Voice Day 2 0 1 8
Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Courtesy of The Center of the Performing Arts
World Voice Day is an annual celebration of healthy voices and highlights the importance of voice at work and in society. It began in Brazil and then spread to the U.S. and all around the world. World Voice Day, officially scheduled April 16, is a series of nearly 400 concerts and other events in more than 50 countries, organized by an international committee to raise awareness of the social, artistic, medical and scientific issues surrounding the human voice. The Center for the Performing Arts proudly participates in the global initiative by hosting its annual World Voice Day Celebration and open mic night on April 16. The Palladium event is the only official World Voice Day observance in Indiana.

ocalists of all ages and skill-levels will enjoy three minutes in the spotlight, armed with only sheet music for the piano accompanist. The Palladium stage is transformed into a cabaret, and vocalists have the opportunity to belt out their favorite tunes in front of family, friends and other vocalists. The event is sponsored by The Voice Clinic of Indiana, a supportive and important partner of The Center for the Performing Arts. The Voice Clinic of Indiana
is a team of laryngologists, speech-language pathologists and support staff who are committed to providing patients with the best available care for voice, swallowing and airway disorders. Corporate partnerships and sponsorships such as these are vital to the success and further development of the Center’s outreach and educational programs. That first year [2015], we didn’t know if anyone would show up and were so happy when over 100 people showed up. People want to come and sing on the Palladium stage. The event is also

an audience development tool for us as it brings people in that we normally don’t see throughout the season.” Lovison went on to explain how the collaboration between the Center and The Voice Clinic of Indiana went beyond World Voice Day. “As they are the experts in their field and offer the best practices in their industry, they became our preferred voice providers of the Center,” she said. “If we have an artist that has had something come up while on the road traveling and they need to see a voice doctor or have some issues, we’ll call The Voice Clinic, and Dr. Stacey Halum or Dr. Noah Parker will take care of the artist. It’s great having them on call and having that resource as part of our team.” Additionally, The Voice Clinic of Indiana has partnered with the Great American Songbook Foundation. While the Great American Songbook Academy is going on in the summer, the clinic sponsors a seminar by one of its practitioners, Rebecca Risser, SLP, who talks with the
students about voice care, exercises and things to avoid that might be harmful to the vocal chords. “It’s one of the highly rated seminars by the students, so we keep bringing it back every year,” Lovison exclaimed. For more information on World Voice Day, visit thecenterfortheperformingarts. org. For information on corporate partnership and sponsorship opportunities, contact Emily Meaux Lovison at elovison@thecenterpresents.org.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event will run from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Singers may show up anytime within that timeframe; however, participants will sign in when they arrive and will sing in order of the sign-in. Each singer may perform one song. Due to time constraints, we will limit participation to the first 30 singers.

Carmel Monthly is excited to announce it has entered into an agreement with Concerts for a Cause (CFAC) to become its media sponsor for 2018. Created in 2016 by local residents Bruce Kidd and Steve Neely, CFAC produces four live music events featuring outstanding local and nationally recognized talent each year at the opulent Lucas Estate. The proceeds of ticket sales are donated to a small local not-for-profit that provides needed support to local residents.

idd and Neely are longtime friends that share a passion for music and giving back to their communities. A couple of years ago, the two got the idea of combining their shared passions, and CFAC was the result. Along the way, they got family and friends, like Zionsville resident Jillian Ashton, involved. Both Kidd and Neely have sat on the boards of large national not-for-profits like JDRF (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). However, with CFAC, they wanted to do something different. One of the unique things about CFAC (and one of the reasons Carmel Monthly was so excited to get involved) is the fact that all the proceeds of ticket sales for each event goes to a different small local not-forprofit. This is made possible due to the generous donation of food by Sysco and contributions by local breweries and liquor distributor, along with Gold Sponsors like The Ackerman Foundation, The Heritage Group and Key Bank. Kidd explained by designating a small organization as the benefactor, the amount of money an event like CFAC raises can have an immense effect on the persons that these local charities serve. For example, the most recent CFAC on January 27 had 250 people in attendance and donated almost $20,000 to Random Acts of Flowers, an organization that delivers 1,500 surprise floral arrangements and moments of kindness each month to elderly patients in local hospitals. Kidd and Neely further noted that CFAC’s mission of supporting a variety of small organizations comes from the servant leadership philosophy of the other CFAC Board members who believe you should “do all the good you can, for as many people as you can, in all the ways you can, for as long as you can” What CFAC has accomplished to date is nothing less than remarkable. Attendance at events has grown each year and so too has the amount of money CFAC has been able to donate to each not-for-profit. In 2016, it averaged 120 people per event and donated a total of $25,000 to four organizations. In 2017, the four concerts were attended by over 700 people and resulted in almost $40,000 being donated to four worthy not-for-profits.
While raising money for a local charity is the principal purpose of the events, make no mistake about the first-class quality of the events. CFAC events are designed to be a full evening of entertainment for the 200-250 guests that attend. All four events in 2018 will be hosted at the beautiful Lucas Estate in Carmel. The $75 ticket to attend includes: • Pre-concert reception featuring outstanding food prepared by Lucas Estate Chef Anthony Puma • An open bar featuring local craft beers, wine, bourbon tasting and soft drinks • A fantastic local artist who opens the show • An outstanding national artist as the headliner • A chance to meet both artists in person • An opportunity to learn about the organization supported that evening and meet their leadership team • The opportunity to impact fellow Hoosiers’ lives with all revenue from ticket sales being donated to a local not-for-profit organization It is with great pride that we at Carmel Monthly join forces with Concerts for a Cause to help those in need in our communities.
The next CFAC event will be April 7 at the Lucas Estate with Indy singer-songwriter Jay Elliott opening and Martin Sexton as the headliner. The organization being supported, the Little Wish Foundation, grants wishes to children battling life-threatening disease or illness. If you haven’t heard of Martin Sexton, here’s what two of the biggest stars in music today had to say about his performance: “I’ve been a fan of his for quite a bit more than a decade, and it’s a real pleasure to finally share the stage with him. I hope that if you never heard him before, tonight is a turning point for you. He’s one of my favorite singers … Y’all have a good time with Martin Sexton.” –Dave Matthews “The best live performer I’ve ever seen. I may just quit my job and go follow Martin and make a fuss everywhere I go, just to make sure that people don’t go their lives without hearing this man sing to them.” –John Mayer To learn more about Sexton go to martinsexton.com To purchase tickets and support this great cause go to, indyconcertsforacause.org.

In the not-so-distant future, the city of Carmel will add Sun King Distillery to its list of attractions and “things-to-do.” Having built up a stellar reputation for its craft beers, Sun King is expanding its footprint and its business model to include distilled spirits under the direction and talent of its Co-Founder Dave Colt.
C
olt has been working as a bartender, manager and brewer in restaurants around the Indianapolis area for over 20 years. In 1996, while he was the bar manager for Circle V Brewing Company in Castleton, Colt was first presented with the opportunity to learn the art of brewing beer. When RAM Restaurant & Brewery opened in the summer of 2000, Colt joined the RAM team and eventually took over brewery operations as the head brewer in 2002. He left the RAM to open Sun King along with co-worker and co-founder Clay Robinson in 2009. Since its inception, Colt and Robinson have earned more than 35
national awards at Sun King Brewery. Sun King Brewery has also been awarded six FOBAB National Wood-Aged Beer Completion awards. Colt completed his distiller’s education working with the world-renowned distillers at the Distilled Spirits Epicenter in Kentucky and is eager to get Sun King Distillery open for business.
Why a distillery and not another brewery? “Distilled spirits are something that I’ve always enjoyed,” Colt said. “I’m a bourbon guy, but I also enjoy tequila, margaritas and all of that good stuff. When we were originally looking at expanding

our brewery footprint, it was with the knowledge that there is this whole 96th Street thing where some people don’t drive south of it, and others won’t drive north of it. We acknowledged that there was this untapped market that we needed to address. We were also coming up against the 30,000-barrel limit, so we started poking around neighboring municipalities like Fishers and Carmel.” Colt said that he and Robinson sat down with both Mayor Brainard of Carmel and Mayor Fadness of Fishers, asking if the brewery would be a good fit for the respective communities and if there were any spaces available to them.

“Mayor Brainard was very generous with his time,” Colt recalled. “He [Brainard] didn’t know where we could put a brewery at that time; we needed several acres. We also talked with Mayor Fadness. He had a location that was available to us, and we were able to open another tap room in Fishers.” As the Midtown redevelopment plan continued to grow and new phases were underway, Colt and Robinson were approached by Justin Moffett of Old Town Development. “We were approached by Justin about opening a distillery in Carmel’s Midtown,” Colt said. “We hadn’t really thought about it, but as we were watching the pieces come together in Midtown – this was about two-and-a-half years ago – we thought, ‘Why not?’ and decided that we should.” “Originally, the idea was to develop a food court concept similar to the Indianapolis City Market,” Colt explained. “Sun King Distillery would’ve been there as sort of a ‘value-add,’ but as the project morphed, it turned into an opportunity where we would be in our building, and the project took off from there.” With the wheels in motion, Colt headed down to Louisville, Kentucky, where he enrolled at Distilled Spirits Epicenter. There he gained experience in the time-honored craft of distilling. “The first thing the instructor said after the introductions and pleasantries was, ‘All brewers are quitters,’ and I was like, ‘Hey, that’s not nice.’ He explained that brewers are [quitters] because we only got halfway through the process. Distilling is the entire process. Brewing is a good stopping point, and the instructors acknowledged that, but they had their fun getting a rise out of the brewers.” Colt went on to explain that distilling craft spirits is similar to the evolution of craft wine in the 1980s- 90s and of craft beer in the 1990s-current day. “It’s something that you’re going to see a proliferation of in the coming years,” he predicted. “We were halfway there and had been barrel-aging beers, so now we can trade barrels back and forth between the distillery and the brewery. How fun is that?”
The construction of Sun King Distillery is ongoing, and Colt is guardedly optimistic that, Indiana weather-permitting, the grand opening of the distillery will be late May/early June. “When people walk in the main door off of the beautiful courtyard that is being designed by the city of Carmel, they will see areas that are designed for relaxation and for people to hang out. There will be a space that will be the 21-and-over bar area with different styles of seating. The overall design is going to be different. We’re bringing a concept to Indiana that we fell in love with out in Colorado. It is an upscale reinterpretation of a ‘food court.’ We will have four excellent food concepts within the space. We will offer popular food items that will be created and prepared by local chefs. There will be something for everybody, and of course, we will have all of our beer available. It will be pretty awesome.” Sun King will offer 12-15 of its beers at the distillery and will also have guest distilled spirits from other regional artisans to help sustain the supply as Sun King is distilling its products. At the time of the opening, Sun King will have recently put aside its bourbon to age over the next four years. “We will tap some local folks who make outstanding products,” Colt said. “We will have signature cocktails and seasonal offerings too. We have a

Mexican lager, ‘Pachanga,’ and we will be making an agave spirit (if it’s made in the U.S., it cannot legally be called Tequila), so we will have ‘Pachangaritas.’ What we will have at our opening depends on how much product we get knocked out as we are producing as much as possible while under construction. We plan on making just about everything under the sun except for vodka. Vodka is a very specific product, and we don’t have any plans on making any at this time, but we will be tapping into other local producers like Cardinal Spirits. We will make rye whiskeys, gins and agave and will get around to making cordials and other infusions as we progress.” When questioned if distilling puts producers “on the map” the way that some successful breweries have put Indiana on the national stage, Colt replied that distilled spirits is a fledgling industry. “One of the goals of Sun King when Clay and I first started out was to make world-class beer and put Indiana more on the map,” he said. “We’ve had a great Indiana brewery, Three Floyds, leading the charge. Upland is another brewery that has been around a while. Distilled spirits is such a fledgling thing that I don’t think any one state has a claim as being the mightiest and best distillers on the planet. For Sun King Distillery, it’s more about the quality. Quality is our number one priority.”
