The Guild of Coxhall Estate is pleased to present the Second Annual Posh Picnic on Saturday, June 15, 7 p.m.– 10 p.m. at Coxhall Mansion in Carmel. Attendees of last year’s picnic enjoyed an unforgettable summer evening of fundraising and fellowship, along with 25 extravagant table settings that ranged from posh to “funky,” but all themes were designed to bring a high level of fun and entertainment to the event. The evening begins with picnicking in one of Hamilton County’s most remarkable parks and ends with dancing under the starry sky.
T
he evening features a tablescape challenge, with prizes awarded for originality, elegance and “funk.” Guests provide their own refreshments, food and tableware for a highly personalized, stylish experience. Tables, chairs and linens (white, floor length) will be provided. Last year’s inaugural Posh Picnic was spearheaded by guild members and dedicated volunteers Joyce Winner and Nancy Maiers. Winner and Maiers had to temporarily step down from the committee, but this year’s planning committee is building from the ladies’ blueprint and is committed to making sure
this picnic is a long-standing tradition and successful fundraiser for many years to come. Sandra Pirkle, guild member, agreed that Winner and Maiers’ fingerprints will be all over this year’s picnic and noted, “Nancy Maiers’ son’s band, Free but Not Cheap, will be performing [at the event] again.” Another member of the planning committee, guild member Nancy Sutton, shared, “Last year, no one had ever seen it [this specific event] before. It was in our hearts and our heads, but no one knew if we were going to be able to deliver, and now people who attended last year really want to come back, and there’s a lot to build on from that.”

While the event itself is quite exhilarating, it is the purpose behind it that is quite meaningful. Attendees of the annual Posh Picnic can enjoy a firsthand experience at Coxhall Gardens while raising funds for new amenities that will allow even more people, of all ages, to enjoy the gardens and estate. This year’s funds will construct an outdoor covered classroom and picnic area that will provide shade and a multitude of uses for park-goers to enjoy in the Children’s Garden. This will be in addition to a surrounding butterfly and hummingbird pollinator garden that was made possible, in part, by the generosity of the Terry family and friends of the late Stephen Terry, who passed away in January. Sharon Terry, Stephen’s wife and Friends of Hamilton County Parks board member, designated

the memorial funds received in her late husband’s name to the creation of the pollinator garden at Coxhall Gardens, which are near the Terry’s home. “His only complaint [about Coxhall] was they wouldn’t let him hit golf balls over there,” Sharon Terry jested. “He loved the outdoors. He was chosen as the Outstanding Eagle Scout in Indianapolis in 1937. He loved canoeing and water, as long as he didn’t have to get in it. He loved nature and the preservation of it, and I think that all came from scouting.” Motivated by Stephen’s passion for nature and preserving it, the Friends of Hamilton County Parks and its subsidiary, the Guild of Coxhall Estate, are excited about the new installations that have been and will be made possible by supporters of Coxhall Gardens and the Posh Picnic. “What is missing in the Children’s Garden is shade,” Mary Robinson, guild member, stated. “This new outdoor cov-
ered classroom would not only provide that shade but will be a natural outdoor classroom, where groups can learn about nature, and it will be surrounded by the butterfly and hummingbird garden.” John Scott Foster, executive director of Friends of Hamilton County Parks, added, “Last year’s [Posh Picnic] was simply marvelous. If you’re going to do a fundraiser, I think it’s important to make sure that you can really connect your event with what you’re raising funds for.
To be able to have that event embedded in thepark is so important. It’s a beautiful setting, and it is an atmosphere that lends itself to people mingling and feeling comfortable and relaxed. It allows people to really understand that they are investing in their community and making their community a vibrant and fun place to live, work and play.” Tickets are selling fast, so purchase your table/seats today at https://poshpicnic.org. Details about parking and other important event information can also be found on the website. In the event of inclement weather, the picnic will be moved to the event tent located on the grounds of Coxhall Gardens. The Guild of Coxhall Estate was established in 2008 by Sharon Terry, a resident of The Village of WestClay and passionate conservationist of the Coxhall Estate. The guild is a subsidiary of the Friends of Hamilton County Parks Board and consists of approximately 40 members today.

E
xperts in applying LED or “green” technology to every project, Landscape Illumination’s owner, Darrin Selking, and his team have earned Kichler Lightings’ North American Contractor of the Year in 2009 and 2012. They are the only outdoor lighting contractor in North America to have won this award twice. Selking received a double degree from Purdue University in landscape management/ design and turfgrass management. He is also certified by the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals Headquartered in Valparaiso, Indiana, Landscape Illumination serves the Indiana, lower Michigan, and south Chicagoland area. They have regional offices in Carmel, Elkhart and Ft.Wayne. Selking and his team of highly trained service technicians specialize in not only landscape lighting for residences but also commercial outdoor lighting.
Selking took a semester course at Purdue in outdoor theater lighting, and his strategic landscape lighting ideas and exterior lighting designs exemplify his study of dramatic lighting techniques. “We’ve done some unbelievable commercial projects – one example is a church that is more than 100-years old,” Selking said. “This was insane from putting together a design while understanding their appreciation for the church’s architecture. A lot of those lights were custom ordered, and I worked with certain beam spreads and outputs for certain architectural features. We produced a drone video of it [the church], and it is pretty crazy.” Selking admitted that he is not the least expensive in the market, but his 20-plus years of experience and commitment to his customers has made him inarguably one of the best in his field. He and his team believe that the bar has been set high by special-
ized lighting design companies and that the true cost for outdoor lighting comes into play when a low-quality system fails. When it comes to landscape lighting, price and cost are two completely different things. “I’m not going to be the least expensive, but I will beat everyone on design,” he said. “I’ve helped thousands of people over my years in business help increase the beauty and safety of their homes. I have passed my experience onto my crew so now they even have a keen eye for design and can make adjustments during installation to create the best experience. Where I used to do everything by hand [designing and estimating], I am using a cloud-based software system that allows me and my guys to communicate quickly, and it makes the entire process more efficient.” With modern technology, Selking can create a design and an estimate during the
10

are nearly invisible. People’s houses may or may not allow for good lighting from the ground, so then we have to install lighting fixtures on the actual structure, and there is hardly anybody around [this market] that does that. I’m one of the only ones, and with the fixtures that I use, you won’t even know they’re up there. They’re [the fixtures] tiny and blend in so well. The power source is on the ground in one location, and my guys can hide the wiring so that it appears invisible.” Additional benefits to creating outdoor lighting displays—including seasonal and holiday lighting applications—is the increased safety and security benefits of having strategically placed lighting around a home and landscape. It is a well-known fact that lighting around your home can help deter potential break-ins. Proper deck lighting and pool lighting are also important safety features that Selking and his team can expertly install for their clients. “Outdoor lighting is huge for security and safety, in addition to the aesthetics,” Selking stressed. “Those are the three main benefits, but you would be surprised at how many people’s houses that we go to during the day have their coach lights on. I ask why those lights are on, and the homeowner always replies that they forgot to turn them off. So, convenience is another benefit— everything we do is automatic. It works off of a photo eye [photoelectric] sensor, so the lights come on in the dark and go off in the morning.
Darrin Selking, Landscape Illumination’s owner
consultation and submit a proposal to his prospective client quickly. Landscape and seasonal lighting are his only business. It is not a sideline or an addition to other outdoor services, and Selking, along with his highly skilled staff, have a proven system that focuses on efficiency as well as customer satisfaction. The design of the project is also important to Selking, and with his training in theatrical outdoor lighting, he has learned how to make a lighting project a work of art that the owners, neighbors and passersby can enjoy. “There are certain ways to do it [outdoor lighting design] and certain ways not to do it,” Selking emphasized. “Typically, when you’re trying to show architectural details, you use lower wattage and place the fixtures closer to the structure, as opposed to putting the typical two large floodlights out in front of a house and throw the light up at it so it looks
like the White House at night. That’s not what I do-we make sure every aspect of the house is showcased. This is especially important when you are lighting a deck, railings or a pool.” Selking explained that doing that kind of “typical” installation washes out the details of the architecture. Landscape Illumination installs low-wattage fixtures close to or on the structure itself so that it shows off the intricate and interesting details that most people don’t see during the day but at night creates a dramatic effect. All the fixtures are standard with LED (light emitting diode) technology. They are energy efficient and usually offer a minimum 15-year warranty on the light source. Landscape Illumination, Inc., offers a yearly maintenance contract after your system has been installed. “LED has made a big difference [in outdoor lighting],” Selking shared. “The fixtures
You don’t have to remember to turn them on and off.” Another point that Selking made was that using properly placed, low-wattage, no-heat LED lights, especially around doorways that have coach lights next to them, will have “zero bug draw” when you turn them on and open the door. Selking explained that with ever-evolving technology, there is a plethora of options and gadgets that are available in his industry. “There are things coming out all the time, but I’ll only use it if I know it works. There is some fishy stuff out there, but I want my clients to never have to call me again unless it’s for more lights, so I use what I know is proven. With newer technology, we can drop a Bluetooth module in your controller, download an app on your phone, and you can control your lights from anywhere in and around your home right from your phone.” If your commercial or residential outdoor lighting system is in need of repair or an upgrade and you live in the Indiana, lower Michigan, or south Chicagoland area, contact Landscape Illumination at (317)851-9172 or visit their website at https:// landscape-illumination.com to schedule an appointment for a free consultation. Don’t forget to ask about their yearly maintenance packages for your lighting system. There are different levels to choose from to meet your specific needs. Be sure to follow Landscape Illumination on Facebook and Instagram for completed residential and commercial projects.

Amazing Lash:
Offering Quality Eyelash Extensions in an Upscale Studio at Affordable Prices As soon as you enter Amazing Lash Studio, located at 2902 W. 86th St., Indianapolis, you feel comfortable as you are greeted in their contemporary, upscale setting. What you will also find satisfying is that Amazing Lash Studio offers its initial eyelash extension service at a very affordable price, starting at $89.99. Lastly, for most women, the great thing about getting lash extensions is the time and hassle saved by not having to apply mascara in the morning.
T
he Amazing Lash Studio on 86th Street is the first in the Indy area, but a second is scheduled to open in The Yard in Fishers this fall. As of February 2019, Amazing Lash Studio was in 26 states with over 200 locations and 114,000 members. It is one of the fastest-growing franchise systems in the country. After you arrive, you will be asked to provide some basic information that your licensed lash stylist will use, in addition to having a personal consultation to determine the style, length and thickness of lash extension that is just right for you. You will be happy to know that all lash stylists at each Amazing Lash Studio are licensed estheticians or cosmetologists who have also been put through 80 hours of additional training by Amazing Lash Studio.
What Are Lash Extensions and How Do Lash Extensions Work? First, eyelash extensions are not the false eyelashes you buy in drugstores that come in a strip and you glue on yourself. At some places, they will stack several extensions on a single eyelash, which can cause damage to the natural eyelash. But at Amazing Lash Studio, they have a policy of one-to-one, where a single extension is placed on a single natural eyelash. As you might imagine, having eyelash extensions applied is a lengthy, tedious process for the lash stylist, usually taking two hours. During this process, the lash stylist is attaching 90 to 120 lash extensions per eye, depending on the number of natural eyelashes you have. While the process may be tedious for the lash stylists, for the person receiving the lash extensions, it can be two hours of
How Long Do Lash Extensions Last? Everyone sheds some of their natural eyelashes daily. Because the eyelash extensions are attached to the eyelashes, you will lose the eyelash extensions as you shed your natural eyelashes. It is difficult to say exactly how long your lash extensions will last since they are dependent on each person’s lash cycle. However, a refill is suggested every 2-3 weeks. Maintenance To properly maintain the lashes, you need a refill every two to three weeks. However, Amazing Lash Studio offers their clients two maintenance programs: Basic: $69.99 per month, which entitles you to one eyelash refill credit per month Twice As Amazing: $119.99 per month for two refill credits for the month With the maintenance programs, you also get the added bonus of discounts on all retail products. What’s New in Eyelash Services? In addition to lash extensions, Amazing Lash Studio also offers a Lash Lift. Essentially, it gives a semipermanent curl to your existing natural lashes. It usually lasts four to six weeks, depending on natural lash growth. Cost of the Lash Lift is $69.99. Amazing Lash Studio also offers what it calls its Featherweight lash extensions. For the same cost as normal lash extensions, you can have the Featherweight, which have half the weight and double the volume. If you’re looking to save some time in the morning and improve you look, call or stop by Amazing Lash Studio for an amazing deal on lash extensions. 2902 West 86th Street Suite 40 Indianapolis, IN 46268 317 830 3104 amazinglashstudio.com

Health Wellness & Beauty (i-r) Donna Davis relaxing during a Cereset session
When you’ve exhausted every option, where do you turn? Donna had reached a point in her life of total desperation. A mother with a full time career, she’d learned she had breast cancer and needed major surgery. After her operation, she found out doctors had been unable to remove all the cancer and she would face another six weeks of radiation treatments.
L
ater, Donna continued struggling to find peace. A lack of restful sleep, fuzzy thinking and hormonal hot flashes continued to interrupt her life and rob her of joy. Her closest companions were anxiety and depression. Though therapy, medications, and other modalities brought a small measure of relief, nothing addressed the issues she faced for long. Your story may be different but perhaps you’re equally desperate, having exhausted options to regather yourself after an extended illness, a painful loss or other debilitating trauma. Restful sleep is often elusive when accompanied by any one of these contributing factors. The fact is, whatever blocks our ability to manage what life throws at us, is ultimately being driven by our brains. The
brain is the organ of central command for our bodies. Our brains react to threatening situations by locking into survival mode to help keep us alive. Though that serves an important function, it also causes us incredible difficulty in obtaining restful sleep once the threat has passed. You can be certain that any difficulties you face have their root in an imbalanced brain. Knowing that is not particularly helpful unless there’s a way to support the brain returning to its normal, balanced state. Some traditional modalities may provide temporary relief, but they typically don’t recognize or help facilitate the brain’s amazing ability for its own self-healing. Donna’s search for answers finally led her to a brain-centric approach. She sought out Cereset™ – CErebrum (Brain)
+ RESET, whose office is in Carmel, IN and offers a process which does exactly what she needed: supporting the brain by reflecting it’s rhythms back to itself, then allowing it to reset or heal itself. Following an initial Cereset session, she experienced restful and refreshing sleep. After 4 Cereset sessions, Donna loves the 7 hours of restful sleep she’s enjoying, awaking to thoughts of gratitude for having her burdens lifted. Donna knows this healing journey will take time in order for her brain to generate strong and healthy networks. She also realizes that, unlike the previous times of temporary soothing from other modalities, she is now on a path for lasting change. Donna works from her own home office but occasionally finds it necessary to travel to corporate headquarters. Prior to Cereset, the mere thought of traveling there caused her excruciating anxiety. She now recognizes she’s sailing through situations that would have previously been crippling. Donna now expects herself to be a high performer. After her sessions at Cereset of Carmel with Brenda Hanning, Donna simply no longer experiences trip preparation anxiety. Though she’s not overjoyed at the prospect of the journey, she has no fear or anxiety about it whatsoever. In fact, she’s looking forward to sharing her Cereset experience with co-workers in the corporate office. She wants them to see the “new Donna” with their own eyes. When asked what she will tell them if they scoff at this new Cereset technology, Donna laughs and says, “Are you kidding, look at me. If it works for me it could work for you too. And, come on, it isn’t going to hurt and can only help. Give it a try!” Contact Brenda Hanning at 317-922-7588 or Brenda@Carmel.Cereset.com or visit Cereset.com

Your Infertility Questions Answered Dr. Bradford Bopp, a reproductive endocrinologist at Midwest Fertility Specialists in Carmel, answers some of the most common questions people ask about infertility.
H
ow common is infertility? Infertility is more common than most people realize. Because of its taboo nature, which has only recently begun to dissipate, it’s one of those things that many people deal with in silence — but they don’t have to. As much as it may feel like it, if you are struggling to start a family, you are most certainly not alone. A staggering 1 in 8 couples in the United States struggle to conceive. Even once pregnant, miscarriage is also surprisingly common, with about 15-20 percent of confirmed pregnancies ending in a loss — and that number increases with age. How do I know if I am infertile? Conception is a very delicate and complicated process, no matter how young and healthy you are. Even if you have been trying for a few months with no success, this does not necessarily mean that you are infertile. So, how do you know if you are infertile
or just need to give it more time? Unfortunately, there are not many telltale signs that a woman or man has infertility. Some medical conditions, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis in women, or Klinefelter Syndrome or hypothyroidism in men, make infertility much more likely. Risk factors like smoking, excessive drinking, obesity, and family history of infertility can also increase the likelihood of infertility. There is a common misconception that infertility typically lies with the female. In reality, a third of infertility cases are attributed to the female, a third are attributed to the male, and a third involve both partners or are unexplained. Are there natural ways to improve fertility? In some cases, fertility can be improved through lifestyle changes, such as losing weight or quitting smoking. In women, being overweight or obese may impair ovulation and cause hormonal imbalances, as
well as increase the likelihood of miscarriage and complications during pregnancy. In men, it may result in reduced semen volume or reduced sperm count, making egg fertilization difficult. There is no magic fertility diet, but eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and staying active will help your body function at its highest level, including your reproductive function. Some supplements also promote healthy reproductive function. This includes folic acid, omega 3s and CoQ10 for women; and CoQ10 and zinc for men. When should we see a doctor? In your reproductive years, whether you are actively trying to get pregnant or not, it is important for women to see their gynecologist annually and for men to get a regular wellness checkup. If you are regularly checking in with a physician on your reproductive and overall health, they can track any concerns, point out potential red flags and help you plan for a healthy future. If you have been trying to conceive with no success, or if you are over 35 and are ready to start trying, it is never a bad idea for both partners to get their fertility checked. This initial workup can help you identify any potential issues as early as possible and get a sense of your chances of getting pregnant naturally. Generally speaking, we recommend that couples in which the woman is younger than 35 try for at least 12 months before seeking medical intervention. Because of the decline in egg quantity and quality with age, that period reduces to six months for women over 35. See more answers online at MidwestFertility.com/infertility-questions. If you have concerns about your fertility, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 317.571.1637 or visit MidwestFertility.com.

Olp Family Medicine of Carmel:
Providing Direct Primary Care at a Personal Level Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Laura Arick
Are you looking for better health care and a more personalized experience with your physician at an affordable rate? Have you heard about Direct Primary Care and are looking for a Direct Primary Care physician near you? Your search is over—Olp Family Medicine of Carmel is just right around the corner in the Carmel Arts and Design District.
D
r. Ashlie Olp has been serving patients as a family practitioner for 15 years and opened her Direct Primary Care (DPC) practice in Carmel just over a year ago. She is a native of Carmel and graduate of Carmel High School. She currently resides in Carmel with her husband and their two young sons.
After graduating from Indiana University School of Medicine and completing her residency, Dr. Olp began practicing family medicine with the Hoosier Family Health group in 2002. “I knew at a really young age that I wanted to be a doctor,” Dr. Olp said. “I majored in biology at Purdue [University] and then went on to med school at IU. I wanted to
go into family medicine for two reasons: I really like the long-term relationships with patients and continuing care is important to me. The second reason is that I feel it is important to take care of all the members and generations of a family, so I have multigenerational patients from the grandparents to the grandchildren.” Dr. Olp openly shared her personal story on what made her leave the practice that she was with and start her own DPC practice. “What actually drove me to this practice was my personal experience as a patient,” she shared. “I have an odd diagnosis called external iliac artery endofibrosis, where a major artery in my pelvis that takes blood flow to my leg has scar tissue developing on the inside of it. I started having pain in my leg back in 2001 when I ran. Running is my favorite hobby and what I spend my free time doing. I started having all this pain in my leg, and so between 2001 and 2012, I saw 11 different doctors, all different specialties, trying to figure out the cause of my pain. During that time, I also had two surgeries that turned out to be unnecessary and was misdiagnosed, twice. One was by a world-renowned neurosurgeon at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.” Dr. Olp explained that she experienced what most patients experience when calling a doctor’s office: Leaving messages most of the time and not speaking with a live person, only to have to wait a few days before receiving a call back for an appointment that would take another two to three weeks before actually seeing a doctor, with whom she spent an underwhelming 10 minutes. Fast forward, Dr. Olp underwent major surgery at Johns Hopkins in hopes that it would fix her leg but to no avail. “At that point, in 2012, I was in so much pain, and it had become difficult for me to walk,” Dr. Olp said. “I decided to take matters into my own hands and ordered and scheduled my own tests—which I could only do because I’m a doctor. The radiologist called me that night and said you have a 100 percent scarred down iliac artery. You need to go to the ER; you’re going to lose your leg. I had found the diag-

nosis myself and got myself to a surgeon, and he did a bypass graft, which is a major surgery, in September of 2012. I recovered from that surgery, and I could run for the first time in 12 years without any pain.” However, her road to recovery wasn’t complete as a post-pregnancy graft clot in 2014 led to another surgery. In December of 2016, the graft clotted off again, spontaneously. After failed attempts to reach a live person at her new surgeon’s office, on her third attempt she managed to speak to a live human, at which point she explained she needed surgery that very day or she would be at risk of having major complications or the potential loss of her leg. “I had to push and be the ‘squeaky wheel,’ but I finally pushed my way into being admitted to the hospital within hours,” Dr. Olp stated. “If I would’ve been any regular patient, I would’ve said to the receptionist, ‘Thank you very much for getting me in within seven days, whereas I would’ve normally had to wait four weeks,’ and I would’ve suffered major complications. It was already a super risky surgery.” She had five days after the operation to contemplate all that she had been through over the last decade with her diagnosis and surgeries. “I had five days after that [for] convalescence,” she said. “I thought about how our old practice was doing the same things to our patients. Nobody picked up our phones because we were too busy. We would return the calls as often as we could, but my schedule was always full at least two weeks out, and if you were a well patient, it was three months before you could get in. It is ridiculous. I decided that I couldn’t keep doing that, and as I was literally being wheeled out of the hospital, I told my husband that I was quitting my job.” Dr. Olp left her old practice and spent several months researching Direct Primary Care and other alternatives, such as Concierge Practices. She spoke with several doctors who are doing similar things. “I researched the market, looking for other ways to do family medicine,” Dr. Olp explained. “I needed to solve three big
problems: access, time and medical billing. Access to your doctor is a big problem. It doesn’t make sense that I can call the guy who’s going to cut my hair, but I can’t call the person who’s going to cut open my leg. You should be able to talk to your doctor, and you never can.” Dr. Olp was convinced there was a better way to practice family medicine, and DPC is the model she has subscribed to. “I found the DPC model,” she stated. “It’s like a gym membership where you pay a monthly fee, and that gets you 24/7 access to the doctor and all of your primary care for free. I don’t ever bill insurance. My patients who are 26 years and over pay $100 a month and then 25 years and younger pay $35.” Technology has played a big part in Dr. Olp’s ability to treat her patients in real time, remotely, via telemedicine. Telemedicine is remote diagnosis and treatment of patients by means of telecommunications technology—in Dr. Olp’s case, her smartphone and/or laptop. The average appointment with Dr. Olp is anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes long. Her DPC practice has solved the three problems of access, time and billing problems. “I don’t charge for anything that I can do within these four walls,” she emphasized. “You literally get all of your primary care for your monthly fee. The majority of health issues can be taken care of here and chronically managed. I’m not an urgent care center. I want to do chronic disease management too.” Patients can get their blood draws and vaccines out of her office. While she is too small of an account to obtain infant and youth vaccinations, she can administer adolescent and adult vaccines, in addition to a slew of many other in-office procedures at no additional charge. “It’s easy to save money doing this, but the biggest way my patients save money is that almost everything can be taken care of as an outpatient, and if you do it as an outpatient versus going through an ER [emergency room], you save several thousand percent on prices. When you really understand how [DPC] works, you will understand how you will receive better
What actually drove me to this practice was my personal experience as a patient.” health care and save money over the long run. It really comes down to what kind of relationship you [the patient] want with the health care system and your doctor.” The Difference Between Direct Primary Care and Concierge Medicine Models In concierge medicine, there is an annual fee that can be paid in full or split up, but the contract is for the entire year. In DPC, members typically pay a monthly fee and may drop out of the program at any time. In concierge medicine, the annual fee covers an in-depth comprehensive physical with screenings that go beyond what traditional insurance or a government program would support. In DPC, the membership fee generally covers unlimited patient visits. Concierge medicine membership fees tend to be higher than DPC membership fees. DPC membership fees are usually priced on a sliding scale, where younger patients pay less than older patients. Sometimes family rates are available. Most traditional concierge medicine physicians continue to accept insurance plans and government programs, and patient visits are billed in the traditional manner. In DPC, the doctor does not accept third-party reimbursements. The membership fees paid by the patients cover basic visits, and some services are charged separately. While the monthly fees to Olp Family Medicine are not covered by insurance, patients can use their insurance for medical expenses that are incurred outside Olp’s office, such as x-rays and MRIs. THE WORTHY TOUR
What do you enjoy when you’re not performing and creating music? Another thing that is really important to my life is travel. I learn so much through the people that I meet. I’ve had conversations with all kinds of different people. I’ve talked with old African priests and had a chance to talk with Maya Angelou on several occasions. I got to talk to Nelson Mandela one time. Oprah has been a source of inspiration and mentorship. [Arie appeared with Oprah Winfrey on OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday” television show, conducted a 25-minute “SongVersation” on Oprah’s “SuperSoul Sessions” and showcased her” SongVersation” on Oprah’s Share Your Adventure Cruise.] Anytime I email her about something, she answers back, right away. She’s always so cool. I emailed her the other day—it had something to do with diet—and she answered me right away. I’ve also been able to learn a lot from different elder musicians.

Arising from Atlanta’s rich music scene, India. Arie earned seven Grammy Award nominations with her 2001 debut release, “Acoustic Soul.” She has continued with a string of successful albums (five consecutive Top 10s) and collaborations with artists as diverse as John Mellencamp and Stevie Wonder, whom she accompanied on his historic 2015 Songs in the Key of Life Tour. Among many other awards, Arie’s 21 Grammy nominations have brought four wins, including a Best R&B Album nod for her 2003 release “Voyage to India.” Arie is touring nationally in support of her new, eighth album, “Worthy,” featuring the singles “That Magic,” already a Top 10 R&B hit, and “What If,” a tribute to civil rights pioneers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and many more. For tickets and details, visit centerpresents.org.
Looking back over the last three years, what were your experiences that led to the creation of “Worthy”? Most of the time writing and recording this album, I was in a relationship, long term for me. That brings this whole set of lessons, as any adult knows. The songs on this album, anyone listening to them can hear the things I’ve been thinking about. Outside of the subject matter of the songs, I have also learned a lot about writing and producing albums for myself. What does “Worthy” mean to you? In the process of making my last four projects, I’ve been able to be empowered and not have to search for it. I think that comes across in my music in the way that I am able to better articulate a message of empowerment and not talking about searching for it. I’m talking about being it. I think that’s the beauty of the word “worthy.” It’s all-encompassing. Telling someone “You’re worthy” is not saying “You’re good at what you do” or “You’re pretty” or “I like the sound of your voice.” Telling someone “You’re worthy” is basically saying “You deserve to exist.”
Having great mentors assist you along your journey, how important is it for you to PALLADIUM mentor those who seek wisdom You have mentioned that PERFORMER SPOTLIGHT and guidance? some of your mentors include your mom and Stevie Wonder. It’s Sweet Life for Executive
Chef David Dodd Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Submitted
If you ever met him on the street, you would never know that one of Carmel’s own, Chef David H. Dodd, MBE, CEC, CCE, has a rich history of creating culinary masterpieces for members of the British royal family and has fed numerous military and other historical figures over the decades.
D
odd resides in Carmel with his wife, Denise, and travels to Louisville, Kentucky, where he is the executive director for Sullivan University’s National Center for Hospitality Studies. Dodd was raised by his mother, grandmother and aunts in Portsmouth, England. His father left when Dodd was only 2 years of age. He recalled playing in the ruins as a young boy, as his town suffered significant damage from air raids during the war. “At the age of 13, my mother remarried,” Dodd shared. “I didn’t [get on] with that individual, so in 1958, at age 15, I decided to leave home.” After a government-sponsored apprenticeship in London for three years, Dodd began his military career with the British Army. He married his first wife at a young
age and a year into his marriage, Dodd was drafted overseas to Yemen (formerly Aden), which was a British protectorate at that time. An injury brought Dodd back to England to a military hospital in Catterick, where he was assigned chef/kitchen duties while he recovered. Dodd’s first wife joined him there. The next two years of Dodd’s life led him to working directly for General Gordon Upjohn and his wife at their home at Scotten Hall, where he not only rose up in military rank but also gained invaluable experience as head chef and “soufflé king.” “I had two years with the general and his wife,” Dodd said. “Her ladyship taught me so much about food, and [in] those two years, I made dinner for all sorts of people, including the King of Sweden and Duke of

Edinburgh.” When General Upjohn retired, he sat with Dodd to discuss his next assignment. The general had a friend, General Sir John Hackett, who needed a chef. “He [Hackett] was a very well-known and brilliant general,” Dodd said. “He was something else.” Dodd was assigned to General Hackett’s staff, which included managing the general’s kitchens, including all his residences, his plane, boat and personal train cars. Upon General Hackett’s retirement, Dodd went back to school and became certified to be a culinary instructor. He and his family moved back to England, where he became the youngest instructor at the British Army’s culinary school. He began competing and caught the attention of Chef Jack Owens, a renowned chef. “Chef [Jack] was the most difficult person in the world to work for,” Dodd stated. “He wasn’t arrogant. He was past that. He took off to the side after a competition and said, ‘You know, you have some natural talent, but you have no clue what you’re doing.’ I said, ‘You are probably correct, sir.’” According to Dodd, Owens offered to train and privately instruct Dodd in the evenings, which Dodd wisely accepted. Four years later, Dodd received his certification, equivalent to a master’s degree in the U.S. The Royal Wedding Cake Having caught the attention of Queen Elizabeth II, after designing and creating cakes for other members of the royal family, including a military-themed birthday cake for a then young Prince Andrew, Dodd was selected out of numerous pastry chefs to design and create the royal wedding cake for Princess Anne. Dodd was given two weeks, from the time he was alerted that he had been selected by the head of the Royal Household, to create designs and present them to the queen. “I took the design to Buck House [Buckingham Palace], and the only thing that the queen did not like about any of the drawings were these two small bells with a ribbon that I put on the top tier,” Dodd shared. “She [the queen] said, ‘It’s a little twee.’ I’ve never really figured out what twee really means, but it’s sort of a

‘We don’t think that we’re going to have that.’ So, I put the couple’s initials at the top instead.” The royal cake designs, as well as Dodd’s work, were top secret, and extravagant measures were taken to keep the design from leaking to the press. The only visitor who was granted permission to visit Dodd was his former mentor, Chef Jack Owens. “He came the day before we moved the cake to Buck House,” Dodd recalled. “He came in with a colonel whom he was going to have lunch with that day. He said, ‘I thought I’d stop by and look at the cake if I can.’ I opened the blue velvet-lined English oak boxes that were made specifically for the cake. He started at the large end of the cake and walked down. He didn’t look at me but at the colonel and said, ‘Should we go for lunch?’” A dumbfounded Dodd just stared at Owens as he started toward the door to leave. “He walked to the door,” Dodd said. “He turned around and said, ‘Oh, by the way, you’ve done nothing to be
ashamed of.’ That was the last thing he ever said to me.” The day of the wedding, Dodd arrived, via escort, at Buckingham Palace to construct the five-tiered cake early in the morning. “I went down to see the princess off,” Dodd said. “She came down that long staircase, and she was beautiful.” After 20 years of service to the British Army and members of the royal family, then Sergeant Major David Dodd of the Army Catering Corps retired from the military, and another exciting chapter began for him. Dodd was selected to head up the first-ever culinary arts team for the U.S. Army at Fort Lee, VA, in 1975. He went on to become a director at Sullivan University. He has led the National Center for Hospitality Studies as executive director since 2014. For the full interview go to carmelmonthlymagazine.com.

Gavin Goode: Creating Art for Good Causes
Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Marty Moran and submitted
We first introduced you to Carmel’s own Gavin Goode in our September 2017 issue. In that interview, we learned about Goode’s military service in the U.S. Marine Corps and his transition from military life to acting as a feature film actor with a few of Hollywood’s elite, such as Orlando Bloom, Joaquin Phoenix, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Ice Cube, Samuel L. Jackson and Sylvester Stallone. In addition to his film work, Goode is a talented artist whose niche in painted steel has earned him accolades and credibility. His work has also raised significant amounts of money for local and national charities.
H
ere in Carmel, Goode’s artwork can be viewed in many local restaurants and breweries. We caught up with Goode after learning he had been commissioned by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), a 501(c) (3) located in Plainfield, and one of its executive board members and Carmel resident Darin Bibeau. Bibeau is also a military veteran, formerly with the USCG Deployable Special Forces Team 401. Bibeau first commissioned Goode to paint a “live” piece four years ago for CSIA’s annual auction. After achieving a significant amount of money from Goode’s piece in that auction, Bibeau and his fellow board members continued to bring Goode to their events to raise money for a variety of projects. Each year, Goode’s work sells for record-breaking
amounts. He has painted “live” for more than 25 events over the last three years, and demand is increasing for his work, as are the “sold for” prices at auctions. Though Goode is “commissioned” by CSIA to do these pieces, he donates the majority of his time and talent for the purpose of building up the programs that CSIA is fundraising for at these events, which are hosted throughout the nation.

The causes that Goode helps to support with his talent are for programs to help veterans find work who are coping with PTSD and for Sweep Away Cancer, a 501(c)(3) organization co-founded by Bibeau. Its purpose is to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research by garnering support from within the chimney sweeping industry. Last month, Goode attended the

National Chimney Sweep Guild’s 2019 Convention in Norfolk, Virginia. Naval Station Norfolk is the world’s largest naval base. Goode was commissioned by CSIA and Bibeau to create a piece or pieces of art that would tie into the convention’s theme of superheroes. Goode decided to represent all five of the military’s branches—Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard— and pair up each branch with a popular American comic book superhero. “The Chimney Sweeps wanted to do a superhero theme this year,” Goode said. “They choose a different theme every year. My first piece was my interpretation of Captain America representing the Army, and the project just grew from there. As a veteran, I believe in raising money and awareness for veterans and any legitimate organization. I can only afford to do this full time for a year. I would do this [painting for auctions] full time if it could pay my bills.” All the proceeds from this year’s auction, held at Norfolk, are going toward the construction of a trade school that will break ground this June in Plainfield, Indiana, where CSIA is headquartered. The starting bid for all five of Goode’s superhero series was $10,000. They
sold at the auction for $18,500, which was applied to the entire event’s total—a record-breaking $60,000. Goode was honored with a standing ovation from the audience at the banquet and was informed that his name would be immortalized on a brick that would be placed on the new trade school’s foundation. Gavin said with genuine humility, “I didn’t expect that kind of welcome or standing ovation.” His friend and fellow veteran, Bibeau, added, “Gavin’s talent brings in money, and that helps to solve the issue of funding [projects and programs]. We [CSIA] commission Gavin, but he volunteers most of the real effort. We were both in the military and understand what it takes to transition from military life to the civilian world. We stand together when it comes to raising money and giving back. My goal is to assist people from the military and, with their skills that they have, transition them into the civilian world so that we’re not leaving anyone behind.” Both Bibeau and Goode are working on a committee that focuses its efforts on placing men and women of the military in jobs that match their skill sets and get them to a point where they are working

and living with purpose as members of their respective communities. Next on deck, Goode is working on a project for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man & Woman of the Year Grand Finale Gala on May 18. Goode shared the complex nature of painting on stainless steel and why it makes his pieces even more unique than some of the subjects and themes that he paints. “Stainless steel is impossible to paint on, which is why I paint on it,” he said. “The surface is incredibly difficult to work on, but I’ve figured it out and found my niche. Most pieces range from 6 to 8 feet long and 4 feet wide, are noncorrosive stainless steel with wood subframes and are lit with LEDs. Every piece I do is done traditionally by hand—no airbrushing whatsoever.” Other recent pieces by Goode currently circulating the local art scene are a portrait of rock legend Jimi Hendrix that Goode was commissioned to do by the Carmel PorchFest committee (not the City of Carmel) and one from a new series he’s working on that depicts singer-songwriter Johnny Cash alongside the late rap icon Eazy-E. “It’s a new series I’m working, ‘Worlds Collide,’” Goode shared. “It’s people and things that don’t necessarily go together but do. Cash and Eazy had a lot more in common than people think. They both wore black and were outlaws and rebels of their genres. Neither of them did anything that they didn’t want to do.” When asked why he chooses to remain in Carmel with his “better half” Tawni Gray when he could showcase his talent anywhere in the U.S., he replied, “Carmel is beautiful and has significantly less crime than other cities in which I’ve lived. I’m close to all the major Midwest cities and can easily fly out to the coasts—I do it all the time.” Follow Goode’s latest projects and work on his Gavin L Goode Facebook page.

he Carmel Farmers Market kicked off its 21st year on May 4, and market-goers are enjoying an impressive lineup of 70 vendors, many returning favorites, as well as another event and entertainment filled season. While the market’s mission is to provide a casual and fun atmosphere for its customers and to support Indiana vendors, the market, also hosts special community events throughout the season to entertain and educate attendees of all ages. A few of the market’s events have become long-standing traditions and crowd favorites such as the
Carmel Firehouse Cook-Off and Purdue University Athletics Day. Coming up on May 11, the market will host No Strings Attached followed by Greg O’Haver on May 18th. O’Haver is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who performs secular in contemporary Christian music with strong vocals and a fingerpicking guitar style. Ross David, a Terra Haute native, will perform on May 25. David’s heartfelt beautiful tones have reached over 6 million Spotify views and over 800,000 YouTube views. Also, on May 25, the Carmel Farmers Market’s presenting sponsor, IU Health North
Hospital will be demonstrating Car Seat Safety-a hands-on presentation on proper car seat installation and other important information on the proper use of car seats for infants and young children. Be sure to check out Carmel Farmers Market’s new website that features detailed information about the market’s sponsors and vendors, including a market map, parking map, music and events schedule and vendor stories as provided. According to Ron Carter, president of the Market and the Market Master, the atmosphere of the Market is remarkably enhanced by the addition of live music. He went on to say, “We have had local performers providing music for many years during the summer. The performances they give are important to all our Market guests ... regardless of age. There is nothing more pleasant that sitting on the Green having a cup of fresh coffee and a cinnamon roll while listening to music performed on the stage of the Carmel Rotary Amphitheater.” Be sure to join us and your fellow market-goers every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and remember, “Get Fresh on Saturday”!
