CAN YOU SPARE AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME FOR OUR CITY’S KIDS? Writer // Janelle Morrison Photography // Courtesy of CYAP
are working with its mentors and volunteers to engage identified at-risk schoolage children. Through the coordination of services, family assistance, tutoring and mentoring, CYAP is able to help build skills and confidence in the children and keep them on a path to success.
W
ould you agree that every child in our community deserves to have a positive role model in their lives—a mentor that he or she can trust and rely on? Are you looking for a meaningful way to give back to our community and able to spare an hour of your time? The Carmel Youth Assistance Program is asking you to consider mentoring a young child from Carmel. The need for available mentors is great, and it does require a level of commitment, but the return on investment for mentoring a youth is far greater a reward than many can comprehend.
WHAT IS CARMEL YOUTH ASSISTANCE (CYAP)?
CYAP was formed in the fall of 2015 to help strengthen youth and families through community involvement. CYAP works in collaboration with the Carmel Clay School District, City of Carmel and the Hamilton County Superior Court. CYAP is a franchise of a great concept that was started in Hamilton County by Judge Paul Felix, Hamilton County Circuit Court, and Judge Steven Nation, Hamilton County Superior Court 1. Hamilton County Youth Assistance and its collaborating youth assistance programs, such as CYAP, help nearly 500 children per year. Without intervention, approximately 40% of those children would end up incarcerated, which could cost as much as $1.73 million per month for Hamilton County citizens. CYAP and its advocates
WHAT DOES A CYAP MENTOR AND COMMITMENT LOOK LIKE?
Once a mentor is paired with a child (mentee), the mentor and mentee do regularly scheduled activities together. CYAP has proven time and again that children who are matched with caring mentors do better in school, develop higher self-esteem and make better choices for themselves going forward. CYAP mentors are asked to make a one-year commitment doing at least one activity every week with their mentee. Mentors and mentees typically meet in the community setting and engage in a fun activity. Mentors are not required or expected to spend copious amounts of money on these activities. The point of the time spent is for the mentor and mentee to enjoy conversation and new experiences—together. Kevin Woods, a Carmel resident and parent, became a CYAP mentor at a time his own kids had grown older and he was looking for a volunteer opportunity. He read about CYAP in a Hamilton County Leadership Academy newsletter and made a fateful call to the CYAP office. “My kids are now high school age and older, and I had some extra time to give back to the community,” Woods said. “I thought this [mentoring] was something that I could do that would give back to the community and work with kids, which was something I was excited about, and I got a hold of the office, and the rest is history.” Another Carmel resident and CYAP mentor, Lori Gray, became an empty nestCARMEL MONTHLY

er, and as a former teacher who worked with at-risk kids, she wanted to find a way to continue to work with kids and make a positive impact in their lives. “I saw an article in the local paper about the program, and the timing was really awesome,” Gray said. “I have a real heart for kids in need because those are the kinds of kids I once taught. It all came together, and it [mentoring] just felt like a perfect fit.”
HOW TO BECOME A CYAP MENTOR
Persons who have the available time and a passion for assisting with the development of a child are most likely good candidates. Prospective mentors should also possess attributes such as commitment, adaptability and a positive attitude. Woods shared more about his experience with becoming a CYAP mentor. “They [CYAP] do a very thorough job on their end,” he said. “Once I was approved and officially in the program, they provided training that is very helpful and answered any questions that I had and alleviated most of my concerns. It [the training] was a very positive experience.” Melissa Yarger, early intervention advocate at CYAP, added, “You can go to our website and fill out the application— online—which takes about five minutes. Once we’ve reviewed the application and if we think it’s a good fit, we then reach out to the applicant and complete a federal background check. If that comes back clear, we go through an interview process. And if that goes well, we have the applicant go through an orientation that lasts for about an hour and a half.” Yarger added, “We want people to know that filling out an application is not making a commitment. So, if applicants are not sure and just want more information before going any further, they can indicate on the application that they would like for us to contact them, and we will answer any of their questions.”
THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MENTOR
Woods was paired with a 7-year old boy and just recently celebrated their one-year anniversary since being paired by CYAP. “My mentee and I have come to be very comfortable with each other,” Woods shared. “He’s a funny guy and
OCTOBER 2019

doesn’t mince his words. He tells me what he’s thinking so I’m not left guessing very often. He has become very comfortable around my house and around my family, and that’s been nice to see. What I get out of it [mentoring] is that I feel like I’m making a difference in the life of child who hasn’t been dealt the best set of cards and has been through a rough time. Whether he wants to hang out and play or needs to talk about what’s on his mind that he’s not comfortable sharing with his parent or teachers but is comfortable sharing with me, it makes me feel like I am helping this child.” Gray added, “CYAP paired me up with a 10-year-old girl, and the best moments have been driving up in her driveway and that feeling of seeing her and she sees me, then we run to each other and hug one another, and then we go off to have some fun. The sad part is she moved, and that was a really tough day for me after being with her for nine months. But we’re keeping in touch. I’ve gone up to have lunch and see her. Her mom welcomes me in their lives, so it’s worked out really well.” Gray concluded, “Doing things with her [mentee] that she had never experienced before—simple things—have been the most fulfilling for me. I would promise anyone who becomes a mentor through CYAP, it will be one of the most fulfilling experiences that they will ever have—guaranteed.” Does mentoring sound right for you? Go to youthassistance.org/carmel for more information and to fill out the online application.

Midtown Holiday Home Tour C e l e b r a t e s

The Midtown Holiday Home Tour is celebrating its 10th year by expanding its offerings to appeal to a broader group of patrons. This year, the tour has added a display of beautiful classic cars, a raffle for fine bourbons, cigars and a Big Green Egg. However, it’s still about having a chance to look inside historic homes you have always wanted to see that are beautifully decorated for the holidays.
T
he tour runs Nov. 16 and 17 and, as always, is a fundraiser benefiting restorative and revitalization efforts by Midtown Indy. (The area known as Midtown Indianapolis is comprised of 17 neighborhoods located between the waterways White River and Fall Creek. This 12-mile-square area serves
as a gateway to the north side and to downtown Indianapolis.) Midtown Indy is a community services organization committed to positively impacting the quality of life and economic vitality of the collective neighborhoods of Midtown Indianapolis. They bring people, neighborhood associations, businesses and cultural organizations together to

encourage collaborative initiatives that result in a more economically attractive, healthy and sustainable Midtown region. The tour features five private homes in four different neighborhoods that are a mix of traditional Meridian-Kessler style homes. Touring these historic and magnificent homes in all their holiday finery is a great way to kick off your holiday season. Each of the homes will feature magnificent floral displays, and a local restaurant will be on-site to offer a variety of food and drinks. New this year will be a vintage classic automobile on display at each of the homes. The cars range from a 1941 Chevy to a very special 1931 Duesenberg Rollston convertible Victoria J472. Unlike years past, this year’s tour will begin at the National Bank of Indianapolis building at 38th and Washington Street. There you can buy tickets (if you haven’t already purchased online), register for a drawing to win some unbelievable prizes and begin the tour! Among the prizes to be given away are cigars, bottles of bourbon, a Big Green Egg and a $500 spree
at Petite G Jewelers! If you are noticing a pattern here of offering something for everyone, you would be correct. We would encourage you to start your holiday celebration by having a great time attending the Midtown Holiday Home Tour and supporting the great work of Midtown Indy. Abda Window Fashions: A Local Window Treatment Expert Offering Blinds, Shades, Shutters and Draperies for Over 20 Years Writer // Neil Lucas • Photography // Laura Arick
Jerry and Pat Rebb started Abda in 1998. Their son Ben has joined the team as well.
T
he reason behind the Abda company name, which means “servant,” is that the Rebb’s wanted to convey to their customers that they treat everyone with a “servant” attitude. That laser-focus on customer service has been one of the keys to the success and longevity of the business.
What to Expect When You Work with Abda Window Fashions During the in-home consultation, your Abda Design Consultant, company employee, will take the time to find out what your goals are and what you want to accomplish with the window treatments. They will ask specific questions, such as how would you like to control the light in the room? Is your main concern privacy or light blockage? Do the windows face to
the east or west? Are there small children, pets or elderly or disabled individuals in the house that need to be considered? Once your needs and goals are established, Abda’s Design Consultant will help you to select from the wide range of products, manufacturers and materials they offer. It is imperative to examine the samples of their products in your own surroundings. According to Jerry Rebb, “Because all our salespeople are installers as well, we have been trained so that we know what brackets fit best for a particular installation. We can truly professionally guide you not only in the decorating but also the logistics of how to install it properly.” Undoubtedly, this type of expertise during the sales and ordering process adds up to time savings and, in some instances, cost savings. The other value-add is that there are no hidden fees. Installation is always included in your cost.
When you hire Abda, you will have the assurance that window measurements and complete installations are done in a professional manner and the work is secured by extended product warranty.
Abda Extended Product Warranty Abda Window Fashions stands by the products they sell and install by offering its customers a two-year wear-and-tear warranty that goes above and beyond the standard manufacturer’s warranty. During the first two years of owning your window coverings, Abda’s service techs will fix the problem at no charge to you. Most importantly, if there is ever a problem with a product, chances are Abda will be able to repair it in-house quickly rather than having to send it back to the manufacturer. Abda’s showroom has been in the same location for 15 years. You can
12
Zionsville_2019Oct_Abda Windows Treatments.indd 1
2019-10-07 4:50 PM
always drop off window treatments that need repair and see the variety of available new products.
Smart Motorized Window Treatments New Trend in Window Treatments Abda sells a large assortment of motorized options for window treatments. Most motorized systems can be synced with the smart speakers that you own. What’s more, you can download an app on your phone to control your shades, enabling you to program scenes to raise and lower your shades at specific times of the day. Away from home? No problem. You can now control your shades when you are away. This will add an extra layer of security, allowing you to randomly open or close your blinds and shades from a remote location.
Increase Living Space by Adding Outdoor Shades Adding outdoor shades to a patio or deck is a great way to make these spaces much more livable by blocking sun, wind and rain, providing insect protection or by increasing privacy. It is important to remember that outdoor shades, as well as any moving parts like motors, should be specifically designed for and constructed with materials that will survive the elements to which they will be exposed. Few, if any, interior blinds and shades are designed to survive if exposed to the outdoors. Abda Window Fashions offers outdoor shades that can turn your patio or deck into a three-season living space. One of the shades sold by Abda is rated to withstand 60 mph straight-line winds.
If you want to avoid the hassle of measuring your window spaces and spending time trying to educate yourself on the intricacies of window treatments, simply call Abda at (317) 273-8343 or visit abdawindowfashions.com to learn more about product selection. You can also stop by Abda’s showroom at 1159 Country Club Road, Indianapolis, IN 46234.

Sweep Away Cancer Calls On Carmel to Help Its Cause Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Laura Arick
As many of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in the spirit of supporting those who are fighting the good fight and in memory of those who lost their valiant battles with the despicable disease, a local organization, Sweep Away Cancer, has collaborated with local Carmel businesses—including Carmel Monthly—to raise awareness and funds throughout the entire month.
The Face Behind the Cause
L
eading the charge is Carmel resident Darin Bibeau. Bibeau is one of the co-founders of Sweep Away Cancer, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was founded by Tommy Nelms, Mark Stoner and Bibeau in September of 2015. These gentlemen established Sweep Away Cancer as a means to provide aid for individuals fighting cancer by assisting with financial or other critical needs that many diagnosed with cancer struggle to maintain for a litany of reasons. Bibeau, president and owner of National Chimney, is also a military veteran,
formerly with the USCG Deployable Special Forces Team 401. National Chimney is the premier manufacturer of stainless steel liner and components. “After I left the Coast Guard, I began contracting overseas in southeastern Asia,” Bibeau said. “After a few years, I came back to the U.S. and hooked up with my business partner, Martin “Marty” Fuller. At that time [about 15 years ago], there was one-and-a-half locations of National Chimney, and our goal was to grow the business.” Bibeau and Fuller chose to open a factory in the Midwest. Today, National Chimney has three Indianapolis locations and nine total locations throughout the nation.
“I have lived in Carmel for about 15 years, and my wife, Johnica, and I built a home on Main Street five years ago near the Arts & Design District in Carmel. We have been involved with local fundraisers and events in Carmel, including PorchFest, and Johnica is heavily involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana.”
How Sweep Away Cancer Helps Those in Need Bibeau and his co-founders of Sweep Away Cancer have pulled their industry resources over the years to serve those who are fighting cancer or have family and friends—in the chimney-related

industry—who are battling cancer. Sweep Away Cancer also serves those who are not associated in any way to the chimney-related industry but have reached out to Sweep Away Cancer for grants that assist cancer patients with gas or transportation to get to and from treatment and doctors’ appointments, paying bills and/or mortgages, food and other basic life necessities. Throughout October, Sweep Away Cancer and a few like-minded Carmel businesses will be fundraising to raise money for the grants that will improve the lives of the applicants. “I am a devout patron of Anthony’s Chophouse in Carmel,” Bibeau admitted. “Anthony [Lazzara]—the owner— jumped on board with our charity after he expressed his interest in getting involved with a charity that supports breast cancer, and I told him, ‘I have one,’ and the conversation and planning went on from there.” Bibeau shared that Lazzara has put together a private dinner for 24 that will feature a seven-course meal paired with
wines from Williamson Winery out of California. “Anthony is donating 100% of the dinner proceeds to Sweep Away Cancer,” Bibeau said. “In addition to that, Anthony’s Chophouse and 3UP—Lazzara’s high-end rooftop bar—will be offering a themed signature drink all month long on their menus and will be donating 100% of those proceeds to the charity as well.” Bibeau also shared that Kevin “KP” Paul, owner of Danny Boy Beer and Distilling Works and Brockway Public House, along with his general manager, Barry Miller, are not only donating the spirits that will be used in the “signature pink drink” offered at Anthony’s Chophouse and 3UP but Paul and Miller will also be participating in the fundraising efforts by donating a portion of Danny Boy Beers and hosting special events at both locations. Information about those events are on the businesses’ respective websites.
Darin Bibeau Co-founder of Sweep Away Cancer
“There are plenty of opportunities to participate and/or donate,” Bibeau said. “The donations made go directly to the people impacted by cancer. Living in Carmel, I have met and continue to meet so many remarkable people that are either patrons of small businesses or small business owners who are always willing to give back and help make a difference. I’ve witnessed this time and again here in Carmel. I don’t know one person who can tell me that they don’t know someone affected by cancer. This fundraiser is all about raising money that helps make life a little easier on those dealing with cancer, and what more appropriate month to raise awareness and funds than October.” For more information on Sweep Away Cancer or to make an online donation, visit sweepawaycancer.com.

Concerts For A Cause will be winding up a very successful 2019 with its final concert for the year on Oct. 19, featuring Aslyn Nash and Indy’s own Cole Wodruff. As mentioned many times before, the concerts are held in an intimate setting at the Lucas Estate with all proceeds of each event donated to one specific local charity. The October concert will benefit the charity A Kid Again. We are proud to have been the media sponsor for Concerts For A Cause again this year.
A
Kid Again works to make life for families caring for a child with a life-threatening illness “normal” again by helping them gain back moments of positive, family-shared experiences and memories. A Kid Again is specifically designed to involve the entire family, not just the child who is ill, to improve the well-being of everyone affected by the situation. Its approach helps protect and strengthen the children’s primary support network and personal resolve during the most difficult period of their lives. For those not familiar with Aslyn Nash, she is an American singer-songwriter from Atlanta. She has released two full-length albums, “Lemon Love” and “The Dandelion Sessions,” as well as a four-disc EP. Aslyn was raised outside of Gainesville, Florida. At the age of 7, she began taking classical piano lessons from her mother. Two singles were released off the “Lemon Love” album: “Be the Girl”
and “Gotta Get Over You.” The first single peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. Aslyn’s sound as a performer has been classified as more of an “independent pop/alternative singer.” Her single “Be the Girl” was featured in an episode of “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County” on MTV. “Be the Girl”
also got featured in the “Bratz Rock Angels” video game. After the release of “Lemon Love,” Aslyn began to tour the United States with such headliners as Ryan Cabrera, Better Than Ezra, Gavin DeGraw, The Click Five and Chris Isaak. The album peaked at No. 36 on the Billboard Top Heatseeker chart. “Our final concert in 2019 will be fantastic. Both Cole Woodruff and Aslyn Nash are exceptional songwriters and performers. Our guests are in for a real treat,” said Jeff Christoffersen, board member of Concerts For A Cause. Since 2016, Concerts For A Cause, in addition to bringing in first-rate talent for its performances, has hosted 16 concerts and donated over $200,000 to 15 different local nonprofits. “The response from the community over the past four years has been incredible. I would encourage any live music lover reading this article to join us on Oct. 19. I am confident they will have a great experience,” stated Bruce

armel Monthly is proud to present a new kind of podcast: “Interviews on Tap.” “Interviews on Tap” is the brainchild of podcast hosts Janelle Morrison, head writer and producer at Carmel Monthly and Zionsville Monthly, and Brett Gordeau, CEO and cinematic illusionist, and Jeff Davis, producer, both at Dream Store Media. Dream Store
Media is producing this brand-new podcast in collaboration with Morrison and has introduced a unique format for their podcast. “Janelle and I have worked together professionally a few times and have become friends,” Gordeau shared. “We came up with this idea that we would look behind the curtain, so to speak, at what she does as a journalist and at
the conversions that she has with some pretty unique people and celebrities. I’m very excited about this new endeavor and look forward to seeing how we develop it [the podcast].” The dynamic duo shares a razor-sharp wit and zany sense of humor that engages the followers. “Interviews on Tap” will feature audio snippets and behind-the-scenes

Morrison added, “Brett and I will also be featuring our picks of liquid guilty pleasures in each podcast—coffee and otherwise—as it is ‘Interviews on Tap.’ This is a way for us to introduce new things to our followers, promote small businesses who are supporting our podcast, as well as indulge in our bad habits.” “Interviews on Tap” is available on multiple platforms, including iOS and Android devices. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, AN EVENING WITH
JASON MRAZ AND RAINING JANE Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Sharisse Coulter, Eric Morgensen and Jeff Coffman
SINCE HIS START IN THE COFFEEHOUSES OF SAN DIEGO, SINGER-SONGWRITER JASON MRAZ HAS RELEASED SIX ACCLAIMED STUDIO ALBUMS OF HIS LAID-BACK MELODIC POP TUNES, ROOTED IN ACOUSTIC GUITAR AND FLAVORED WITH HINTS OF REGGAE, FUNK AND OTHER STYLES. WITH SUCH HITS AS “I WON’T GIVE UP,” “MAKE IT MINE,” “LUCKY” AND THE TOP 10 SMASH “I’M YOURS,” HE HAS LANDED FOUR GRAMMY NOMINATIONS AND TWO WINS, AMONG OTHER HONORS. MRAZ’S LATEST RELEASE, “KNOW,” DEBUTED AT NO. 9 ON THE BILLBOARD 200 AND FEATURED THE SINGLE “HAVE IT ALL.” Joining Mraz on this tour are his friends and longtime collaborators Raining Jane, an all-female folk-rock quartet. The Los Angeles-based band has performed with Mraz frequently and backed him on his 2014 acoustic album, “Yes!” This performance will sell out, so act fast! Visit thecenterpresents. org to inquire about available tickets. When you started your career in the a band or working on a cruise ship or being in a musical. I was open, my heart was open early 2000s and were working in local to anything. When I was 18 and discovered coffee shops in the San Diego area, did troubadours and playing guitar, that’s when I you ever think that your career would felt like I could do this [entertain] anywhere. look and feel the way it does today? I didn’t have to wait for a “job.” So, I started Definitely not. When I started out—even playing open mics and on street corners, before coffee shops—I didn’t know where my “songwriter nights” and college venue would be. I just knew as parties. It just filled me up, and a young person I wanted to be the “high” was the same no matinvolved in music. I wanted to be PERFORMER ter what venue I was at. involved in entertaining people SPOTLIGHT through music. As a kid, [for me] that could have been anything;
THE PALLADIUM
Once you connected with the local coffee shop community, did you feel like you had “made it” and were you satisfied? Or did you hunger for bigger venues and brighter lights? I just loved the service of performing, and I found a home in coffee shops around 2000–2001 in San Diego. That’s where I started having a regular residency, and back then—to me—that was it. I had made it. I had a regular gig. I was making my ends meet. If I stayed there my whole life, I would have been fine. I had joined a community of songwriters where that [community] was their home and that was their final stop. There is a built-in audience around the coffee shops, and I had found songwriters that I could learn from and work with. But it [my career] just kept growing, and people kept coming to my shows and sharing my music. The next thing I knew, my music was ending up on the desks of record executives who wanted to work with me.

What was going through your mind then? I thought, “OK, let’s give it a shot.” I thought the worst that could happen is that I put a record out, maybe go on tour, but I could always come back to the coffee shop. The reason why I think it worked [for me] is because I’m kind of unattached to the outcome. I wasn’t going to play into the rock and roll ego mind; that I was “important.” I think a few times I may have gotten intoxicated by fame, but it doesn’t last. It’s not a sustainable concoction to consume. So, I would always find myself back in the coffee shops between tours and in between albums.
You co-wrote “Have it All” with Raining Jane, which was certified gold, from your latest album, “Know,” and your entire preceding album, “YES!,” was a collaboration between you and Raining Jane. What is it about collaborating with the incredible ladies of Raining Jane that is special to you and to this tour? I’ve been collaborating with Raining Jane since I met them in 2006. We co-wrote “A Beautiful Mess” together. They’re some of my best friends. We bounce ideas off of each other, we write songs together and we spend a lot of time together. We’re committed to making more music together and want to make another album together. So, we have a collection of new songs that we’re going to be weaving into the set list [during this tour] but not blindly. We will include the audience and ask for their feedback. If you don’t like the song, give us a big thumbs-down or “boo” us.
What is it about coffee shops that makes you want to continue to perform in them? That’s where all my songs get tested before they ever make it on to a record. I have to know what they feel like playing on stage, and I have to know what it feels like to say these words in front of an audience. Everything Why does this particular sounds great on a demo or in a studio, but it collaboration work so well? really needs to be tested on an audience. I’ve [Raining Jane] has been a part of my band kept the coffee shop culture close to my heart since 2014. They were on the “Good Vibes” over these years. I’ve built a little studio in tour, and they were part of my last album, my backyard where coffee shop musicians “YES!,” but it’s really special for us to break come to my studio and record because I know it down to just the five of us. It’s the sound how important that process is. And I know that we make when we sit around in a circle how important having a recorded piece of and play music. Wow, your wife is one lucky lady. Awe, thanks. I’m a lucky guy. Your foundation, the Jason Mraz Foundation, does incredible things for our nation’s young people. Tell us more about its purpose and how your fans and our readers can get involved. I started it back in 2011, just trying to do good with all this fame and spotlight that I had been given. Over the years we have raised money for all kinds of organizations dealing with the environment, human rights, to assistance with recovery. About three years ago, I decided to refocus the foundation’s efforts on arts education and the advancement of equality. Through the foundation, we are able to go into communities, help kids get a hand up in the world using the arts as a medium to unify and to give young people some dope experiences. Our emphasis is on arts education and the advancement of equality. People can get involved with what we’re doing simply by visiting my foundation at jasonmraz.com/foundation. But they can mostly get involved by going to a concert because we give a portion of every ticket sold to the foundation. Just by supporting my music, you’re helping the foundation and the kids we serve. What do you hope people will take from this experience and get out of seeing you and Raining Jane? We’re going to do a song called “Looks for the Good.” It’s not released yet. It’s something we just wrote. “Looks for the Good” is kind of the message or mantra that I have carried around with me through my music for years. We live in trying times, and it requires a positive attitude to endure it and to continue to get up in the morning and make changes in our lives for ourselves, our families, our communities—the world. So, I’m hoping that as people trust us with their entertainment and come see us that they will not only get great music, beautiful melodies and harmonies, and humor from our concerts but that they’ll leave with the sense of optimism. And that they’ll leave with a sense of hope that in trying times, you can still look for the good and find your way through life because life is precious. We need every bit of encouragement, support and connectedness that we can get to feel like we matter. That’s what I’m hoping people walk away with—a reason to look for the good.

Kathleen Post
A Worldwide Influencer in Women’s Fashion Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Laura Arick and submitted
The city of Carmel may be attracting younger people for its world-class amenities, developing culture and thriving performing arts community, but it is also attractive to young influencers such as Kathleen Post, a Carmel native and fashion maven who created an internet sensation—the Lemon Blonde brand.
P
ost moved back to Carmel after living in Los Angeles and other areas of the country with her husband, Cort, and is contributing to the growing fashion scene by promoting local and national brands to her 200,000-plus national and international Instagram followers. According to Post, the greater Indy area is rising up on the fashion radar as a place to buy and exhibit today’s latest fashion, beauty and home decor trends. Post is inarguably contributing to the area’s status on that claim. Post, a graduate from Indiana University, earned her marketing degree from The Kelley School of Business. After a brief
stint in a corporate environment, Post quickly realized that she was being called to walk along a less “traditional” career path, one that would feed her creative spirit and ingenuity. “I started my first ‘adult job’ after graduating from IU,” Post shared. “It was a typical 8-to-5, Monday-through-Friday office job. About one month into it, I quickly realized that was not the path for me. I immediately started thinking of ways to have a creative job, and that’s when I decided to start a blog.” Post explained that the blogging industry was already established at that point, and she saw the potential for a career within the [blogging] industry.

“I started my blog [Lemon Blonde], and at the time, it was a hobby, but it was also very intentional because I wanted it to eventually be my career and to be my full job.” Post began with posting photos of her outfits, beauty tutorials and tips and home decor. “I reached out to a lot of local businesses and boutiques in the Broad Ripple, Carmel, Zionsville and greater Indy areas, asking if we could work together,” Post said. “I would take pictures of their clothes and accessories. I was offering them content that they could use on their social media and websites, and it was my way of getting my face out there, building
OCTOBER 2019

What is huge this season that we should be paying attention to with regard to fashion trends? Animal print has been big and is going to continue to be. Specifically, faux snakeskin. That is really big for fall and winter, as well as different types of animal print like zebra and giraffe. Leopard and cheetah prints are still considered big too.
What are this season’s colors and patterns? Lots of neutral tones and monochromatic pieces. I’m wearing tan boots, tan skirt and a tan sweater, so it’s going to be a lot of tonal shades and pieces put together. Lots of checks and plaids this fall and holiday season with plaid blazers and plaid pants. my brand and building relationships with the brands that I love.” Post’s brand and credibility as an influencer grew, and it wasn’t long before both local brands and national brands started beseeching Post to work for and to represent their brands. At this point, Post quit her “adult job” and put all of her focus on monetizing and expanding her blog career. “There’s a lot of brands that I’m excited to work with like lululemon, Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom, lots of beauty brands and big fashion brands that I personally shop,” Post said. “Now I’m working with them on a month-to-month basis and sometimes on a yearlong contract with some of them.” “It’s really exciting when the brands I love are coming to me—consistently—to the point where I can take on all the projects I want. It’s an exciting place to be and I’m only picking the ones that I’m really fired up about.” Although she’s well traveled and spends time in fashion meccas such as New York City, Post has maintained her Midwest roots and her own unique style and voice, which makes her relatable to her hundreds of thousands of followers. “There’s a part about living in the Midwest and being a normal girl who lives in the suburbs of Indiana that is
relatable,” Post said. “I don’t live this super glamourous city life. I love my life. I love Carmel. I think people can relate to that [loving their lives and communities], and that represents a lot of the people that follow me all over the country and even out of the country. I think it comes down to finding someone you can connect with and sharing things in common, whether it’s fashion, beauty, fitness or home decor, and it doesn’t matter where you live. That is the cool thing about having a job that’s on the internet and social media.”
The ’80s and ’90s appear to be resurrecting in today’s fashion? Should it have stayed in the catacombs of time or are you excited to see some things trending again? I’m definitely seeing a lot of ’80sand ’90s-influenced styles. I think there’s a way to do it and make it your own [style] with the flared pants or the overalls. You can put your own twist on it in a way that you don’t feel like you’re stuck in the ’80s or ’90s. You can definitely modernize the look. Oversized sweaters, chunky knits and mock necks are big this season. I think fall is all about scarves and cozy, oversized comfort clothes.
CARMEL MONTHLY
Carmel_2019Oct_Kathleen Post Cover Story.indd 2
I’ve also seen a lot of jewel tones and deep magenta, blues and emerald greens, which will be really big for the holidays as well.

What about shoes and accessories? Lots of snakeskin boots, heels and flats. Lots of great brands like Steve Madden and Sam Edelman have great faux snakeskin designs. Faux leather and suede with pointed toes that are western-like with stitching and block heels are big this fall and winter too. For jewelry, I like delicate gold layers and little charms on your necklace and earrings. Another fun trend is the resin, plastic look. It’s a retro look, so like tortoise shell resin pieces or some that are translucent or see-through. Hats: I love felt fedoras. There’s lots of fun stuff for fall and winter. It’s definitely my favorite time of year.

Here Ye! Here Ye! You are Invited to Carmelot:
A Madrigal Feast Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Courtesy of Voce and Coxhall Guild
The lords, ladies and velleins of Carmel are all invited to an evening of medieval merriment in support of Coxhall Gardens. Join us at the Ritz Charles in Carmel on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019, for Carmelot: A Madrigal Feast, presented by Coxhall Gardens Guild and Hamilton County Parks, featuring music and entertainment by VOCE.
V
OCE’s members will fill the “great hall” at “Carmelot Castle”—aka Ritz Charles—with court-related activities and entertainment throughout the feast under the narrative of the Lord of Misrule. VOCE board president, Brenda Iacocca, has been organizing madrigal dinners for more than 30 years and is thrilled to be partnering with Coxhall Gardens Guild for this exciting fundraiser. “The first madrigal I started was 30 years ago with my sister,” Iacocca shared. “My sister went to a college that put on a madrigal [dinner], and she decided that our family should help put one on at our church. I
think I was the lady of the manor that year. My husband, [Dr. Ronald Iacocca], has been the ‘Lord of Misrule,’ which is like the host for the evening, and he has generally done all the cooking for the madrigals. The Ritz Charles is doing the meal [for this madrigal], but my daughter is donating the bread [for each table].” Iacocca added, “My daughter [Meredith] specializes in gluten-free and dairy-free foods, and her website is abundantplatewellness.com.” The madrigal feast will begin with a wassail toast at 6 p.m. sharp! Wassail is a traditional mulled cider that dates back to medieval times. The main course, prepared by the staff

at Ritz Charles, will include squash soup, applejack chicken, smashed red orbs (potatoes) and smoky vert legumes (green beans). Dessert will be a traditional bread pudding with whiskey sauce and whipped cream. Wine is included in the meal, and a cash bar will be available. Guests are encouraged to come dressed in medieval attire or in modern-day dinner attire should they choose not to don their finest sayons and gowns. The event co-chairs, Sharon Terry and Jody McFarland, are excited for the upcoming event and see it as another way to introduce Coxhall Gardens and Mansion as one of Carmel’s most extraordinary amenities. “I think [Carmelot] is going to be wonderful because of all the people who are involved,” McFarland said. “We [Coxhall Guild] want to introduce the whole Carmel community to Cox Hall and all the wonderful things it has to offer. We will have a raffle and one major prize. Tickets for the raffle will be $5 each or three for $10. As mentioned, each table will have a loaf of rustic bread—donat-
ed by Meredith Iacocca—and cubes of cheese for guests to nibble on as they wait for the wassail.” McFarland continued. “The decorations are incredible, and each table will be adorned with runners, lanterns and
other medieval accessories. We are going to have a large gold frame for people to capture selfies in. Throughout the meal, there will be singing, jokes and entertainment as well as sprites who will be passing over guests with mistletoe.” The evening will include traditional music and dance after dinner has concluded. Tables of eight are available for $650 and individual tickets are $100 and are available for purchase or online at coxhallguild.org. Reservations are a must! Limited seating available. Dinner, drinks, music, entertainment and holiday cheer are included in your ticket price. Proceeds will benefit Coxhall Gardens.

Calling S.O.S. on Behalf of Carmel Clay Schools Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Courtesy of Carmel SOS Safety for Our Students
The Carmel SOS Safety for Our Students volunteers have been fervently working on behalf of the Carmel Clay School (CCS) district to get their message out about the school safety referendum that will be included on the upcoming ballot this November. We asked the PAC organizers, Laura Jarred and Nicki McNally, to dispel some of the “myths” and share the facts regarding this school safety referendum and explain why they are asking for your votes.
What Is a School Safety Referendum?
I
n the 2019 legislative session, the Indiana General Assembly passed Senate Bill 127, allowing school corporations to seek property tax referendums for school safety initiatives. This is a new type of referendum. Due to increasing incidents of school violence across the country and even in Hamilton County, along with alarming upward trends of students with anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation, CCS feels it is imperative to add additional safety and mental health layers to its current safety programs. The school safety referendum is a property tax referendum that will fund three types of safety initiatives in CCS over eight years. Those initiatives are a school resource officer (SRO) in every school, increased mental health services and professional development.
Why Is a School Safety Referendum Needed? CCS partners with the Carmel Police Department to hire SROs. Currently, CCS middle and elementary schools do not have dedicated full-time SROs assigned. Three out of the seven districts’ SROs are shared between 14 schools and 11,000 students. The other four SROs are assigned to the high school, where they serve over 5,000 students. “As parents, we along with the school administrators find that ratio to be unacceptable,” McNally said. “Most people don’t realize that is our [the district’s] current situation. Other surrounding school districts have rectified the same issues, but we haven’t been able to fix the issues because we haven’t had a source of funding for the solutions.” Currently, if a situation were to occur at one of the middle schools, the SRO may not be present because he or she may be

at one of the elementary schools. “This referendum is more than putting officers in schools to prevent violence,” McNally said. “The SROs are also mentors to the students. You may have heard about the ‘triad model’ for SROs: officer, mentor and teacher. The SROs actually have a curriculum that they’ve developed over the years and teach all of the drills to the students. They talk about body safety, and they work with the students on a daily basis.” McNally continued, “They are also an additional set of eyes and ears to help identify students that are in need or are at risk and get them the services that they might need. The mental health piece of the referendum also helps to get in front of school violence before it occurs by adding this other layer of services for the students. That’s the whole goal of this referendum is to get in front of the violence before it ever occurs and to get these kids into a healthier state so that we don’t ever end up being the next Sandy Hook or the next Parkland.” If the referendum passes in November, CCS will raise the salaries of current social workers to be competitive with area districts. The referendum will also provide funding for additional school counselors and/or school social workers. CCS will contract with local providers to have mental health therapists available in every school. Parents of students in need of support can choose these services. This initiative is designed to eliminate barriers to mental health services, support families and wrap resources around students in need of assistance. “To have mental health therapists come in—who are contracted through the

hospitals—on-site at the schools so that the kids have easy access to get the help that they need and they don’t have to miss their appointments because their parents can’t get off of work is priceless,” Jarred emphasized. “They will have immediate access at their fingertips if they ever need mental health services.” According to a Secret Service study, 93% of school attackers displayed concerning behaviors prior to an attack and 78% presented suicidal ideation. Better access to mental health programs helps identify potentially violent students before they harm themselves or others.
What Does It Provide the Schools if Passed? Under the referendum, CCS would add 11 more school resource officers in addition to the seven currently employed by the district. In addition, programs addressing mental illness for students and staff will be considered to improve school safety and reduce violence. The referendum would allow CCS to add mental health programs for
students through contracted health services with outside partners, increase social worker pay and add social workers and/or school counselors. It would also provide ongoing professional development for staff, students and the community to improve safety and reduce violence. The extra revenue would generate about $5 million per year over the eightyear referendum for CCS.
What Is the Cost to the Taxpayer? The referendum would increase taxes by 5 cents for every $100 of assessed value. For example, property taxes on a $250,000 home would increase by $65 per year, $146 per year for a $500,000 home, and property taxes on a $750,000 home would increase by $232 annually. Jarred added, “On a $750,000 home, that breaks down to $20 per month. People are looking at that gigantic number [$5 million over the next eight years] and think the taxes are going to go through the ceiling. It’s important that people understand the true cost to the taxpayer and the true
cost of not having this referendum. You can’t put a price on lives.”
Why Should the Carmel Community Support the Referendum? “Everybody loves Carmel,” McNally said. “People think it’s a great place to live, and we win all of these awards, but if any violent events occurred, it would destroy not only the reputation of the community, but it destroys the people in the community too. It doesn’t just hurt the people directly involved; it reverberates through the entire community. We have to put these measures in place so that our kids are protected and our community as a whole is protected. Safe schools are strong schools, and strong schools are the foundation of any strong community. And I think whether you have kids in school or not, you should be supportive of that.” If the voters approve the referendum, changes could go into effect as early as January 2020.
