However, this month we had the rare opportunity to interview two iconic comedic geniuses, Steve Martin and Martin Short, which is a testament to the level of entertainment being offered by The Center for the Performing Arts. The duo will be bringing their show, Now You See Them, Soon You Won’t, to the Palladium on September 26th. Steve Martin and Martin Short’s celebrated comedy show, “Now You See Them, Soon You Won’t,” redefines the form in unexpected and profound ways, from two of the funniest, most influential and acclaimed talents of the past century. Martin and Short will be joined on stage by Della Mae, banjo innovator Alison Brown and keyboardist Jeff Babko from the Jimmy Kimmel Live house band. Steve Martin is one of the best-known talents in entertainment. His work has earned him an Academy Award, five Grammy awards, an Emmy, the Mark Twain Award and the Kennedy Center Honors. THE BIG INTERVIEW

As gracious as they are hilarious, Martin and Short accepted an exclusive interview with Carmel Monthly and shared some in-depth behind-thescenes thoughts about their careers, their professionalism and especially their 30-plus-year friendship—a unique friendship between two iconic entertainers that has lifted each of these men up in times of great success, carried them through times of great loss and has sustained the decades with laughter. The interview began by pointing out that these men have been performing for half a century—a fact that both Martin and Short are sincerely proud of.

man, I would’ve said, ‘Yeah, laughs are fun, but the movie’s over and that’s enough of that.” I think it [friendship] goes deep into layers, and it’s just knowing when you have a friend not worth losing. STEVE: Marty was very funny in a surprising way. I always like to try to hang out with funny people and then they turn out to be interesting in addition to all that, it just makes it [the friendship] better. He is very wise.

Going back to the beginning of your careers, at what point did you know that you wanted to be performers/ entertainers? STEVE: For me, I was in college and was thinking about becoming a philosophy professor. But in my mind, I knew that if I didn’t give show business a try, I would have a regret my whole life. And that’s when I decided to go into show business. I really wanted to do it and had to try. MARTIN: For me, I had always fantasized about being in show business and would have imaginary television shows in my attic bedroom and would have imaginary deals with NBC and all that stuff. But I thought I had to be realistic because I was in Hamilton, Ontario [Canada], and so I went into medicine, and after two years of that I was like, “Nah, I’m going to try show biz.” So, I graduated college and gave myself a year to try it [show business].

Fast-forwarding to the fateful encounter on the set of “The Three Amigos,” that is where your friendship began and really developed, was it not? MARTIN: Absolutely, yes. STEVE: Certainly, yes. We ended up doing five movies together for one thing. And usually, as Marty says, you do a movie for three months and then you never see those people again. But he and I went out of our way to see each other but also to work together. And when those opportunities came up, we seized them. When you think about those moments working on set, working long hours and all the things that come with working on a movie, what was it about each other that made you think, “I kind of like this guy?” MARTIN: Why do any friendships form? Obviously, the big attraction for us was the comedy and we made each other laugh, but had Steve not been a truly decent and kind

Steve, we spoke with a blood relative of yours who works with one of The Center’s resident companies, whose maiden name is Mary Jeanelle Martin. She shared with us a story about her mother and your mother having written a book of genealogy for your branch of the Martin family. She said that every blood-related Martin has a half page in that book except for you. You have a FULL page. Are you aware of this book? STEVE: I remember that [book] and, well, first of all I am very grateful to Jack Martin [and family] for doing that. Otherwise, we would not have all that [family] history. Jack was working on that [book] at the time of my highest popularity. [Pause and laughs softly] He might have been influenced by all that, but there is a lot of information in that book. I love it.

MARTIN: Thank you.

What makes Martin wise in your opinion? STEVE: He has a lot of insight into people and also, he manages his own life really well, and sometimes I haven’t. MARTIN: [laughingly] Give me three examples of where you haven’t. [Martin and Steve laugh] STEVE: Well, certainly romances that have been bad. You know, that sort of thing. MARTIN: You get rid of people quickly, and I get rid of people over a few years. [More laughter] Obviously, you feed off each other well and play up each other’s strengths. So, when you’re doing these shows and you’ve written a script, do you ever look at each other and say I want to change this up or I think you should do this before you go out on stage or do you stick to the script? STEVE: We do both of those things. We like to stick to the script, but we also like to be inspired by things, so we often will make comments like, “Hey, here’s a suggestion for that bit” or Marty will suggest something and we either take it or leave it. What is it about the other that when you perform together really adds to the performance? STEVE: Marty is a real live wire and physically moves quite a bit. And he has all the daring comedy bits that play against my kind of, I don’t know if it’s stoicism, but let’s put it this way: I have no costume changes in the show, and Marty has three. [Martin laughs.]

If memory recalls, there was an interview back a number of years ago, and one of you was on a late-night talk show and the subject of colonoscopies came up. As the story goes, the two of you and Tom Hanks got together the night before your scheduled colonoscopies at Steve’s house for a sort of colonoscopy cleanse/support party. Was that for real and what did that look like? Not look like but you know, how did that go down? STEVE: Yeah … you don’t want to know what that looks like. [Laughter] STEVE: We’ve done it twice, and you know, a colonoscopy had a sort of bad reputation for being difficult. You had to be sedated and this and that, but now the colonoscopy [procedure] is so easy and it’s so improved that we don’t really need to fortify each other by having four guys come over to play poker and drink laxatives all night. [Laughter]

that character was that I could say anything I wanted because he [Glick] was a moron. [Laughter] MARTIN: So, it didn’t matter what I said [as Glick]. I once said to Mel Brooks [as Glick], “What’s your big beef with the Nazis?” I

Who was there for those “cleanse parties”? MARTIN: On both occasions it was Tom hanks and our friend Walter Parks, who’s a big-time Hollywood producer. One can only imagine the conversations that went on those nights. STEVE: Oh, we laughed pretty hard. But [telling that story] is our way of telling people to get colonoscopies because people aren’t always getting them at the age they should be.

Well, you wouldn’t say it and keep your job! MARTIN: Exactly or keep your citizenship. Who did you enjoy interviewing the most? MARTIN: I can’t even, there’s so many… STEVE INTERRUPTS: I’m on the phone, Marty! I’m on the phone. [Laughter] MARTIN: It wasn’t Steve, but I interviewed Steve more than once!

You guys made colonoscopies relatable and humanized what is otherwise an experience we don’t want to sign up for unless we absolutely have to. Did you guys actually go to the clinic together the next day? MARTIN: Yes, we went to a clinic, and from there we went to a bar and had margaritas. Martin, you’ve been on this side of the table playing the character of celebrity interviewer Jiminy Glick. What inspired you to create that character and what did you take from those experiences as Glick? MARTIN: I wanted to create a character who could go as an entertainment reporter and create a character where I could be totally unrecognizable. What was great about doing

Looking at your friendship of 30-plusyears, imagine what if you had never met. What would be missing from your lives today, personally and professionally? STEVE: Well, there would be a big hole. MARTIN: Yeah, the same with me. I’d miss this great friend and this great comradery and this great kind of wise fella who I laugh with on the phone and enjoy endlessly and have never had an issue with in all these years. That’s very unique. STEVE: It’s hard to answer because we’ve had so many good times. Good times, sad times. You can’t imagine [being without] it because it [30 years plus] is a lot of time. MARTIN [CHUCKLING]: It really is.

What is it you would like for people to know about this particular show and what can they expect aside from a celebration of decades of comedy, joy and realism that you’ve both given us? Thank you for that, by the way. STEVE: We’re really looking forward to it [the show at The Palladium]. Our goal is to make the audience laugh as hard as they’ve ever laughed in a professional situation. That is always our first goal. We hope that that audience says, “Wow, that was really funny and worth the ticket price.” MARTIN: I think that Steve and I share many similarities, but one is a deep desire to make every show we do as good as it can be. We’ve never not taken [a show] seriously, and I think that it would be difficult to work with somebody who didn’t take it as seriously as we both do.

The Carmel Symphony Orchestra (CSO) opens its 2019–2020 season, “Musical Journeys with Janna,” with a fresh and innovative way designed by its music director, Janna Hymes, to target and engage diverse audiences of all ages. Hymes’ program includes a brilliant repertoire of some of the world’s most exquisite and eclectic symphonic music ever composed.

ymes, the 85-member resident orchestra and the CSO staff are committed to enhancing the quality of life for its patrons through its artistically excellent and affordable performances. The CSO is equally committed to its engaging outreach and educational experiences both at The Palladium at The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel and beyond. Since joining CSO in 2017, Hymes has been fervently working on the orchestra’s programming, which she is scheduling out to five years, and is excited to share some of the fruits of her labor for this year’s season. This year’s season will speak to

a vaster demographic than ever before and inserts CSO as part of the common culture here in our remarkable city. “What we are seeing across the board— not just in Carmel—is that we [professional orchestras] need to be representative

of our community in a bigger way, and we need to be inclusive,” Hymes emphasized. “This [CSO] needs to be a home for everybody—a safe haven. Here, there are no prejudices, and we will play music that will be representative of everybody.” Hymes expressed her passion for the city to become known as a great arts destination with a great orchestra and to build on the growing attraction that is bringing in people from all over greater central Indiana. “We’re starting with small steps,” Hymes said. “This season we’re going to play Edgar Meyer, who I think has nine Grammys now and is an exceptional crossover artist. A lot of people are like, ‘Wow, you’re bringing Edgar Meyer

Here, there are no prejudices, and we will play music that will be representative of everybody.” here?’ Of course, we’re doing Beethoven to celebrate his 250th birthday. I think every single orchestra in the world is doing something to honor that, but I really wanted to do Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Op. 125 in D minor. I’m bringing in four of my friends who are singers, and I’m really looking forward to that [performance] because I think that is one of the greatest pieces ever written. We will have the Anderson [University] Choirs on stage as well, so it will be a real spectacle.” For the first time in The Center’s history, two resident companies—CSO and the Actors Theatre of Indiana—will collaborate and perform on The Palladium’s revered stage. “‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ is a really cool collaborative effort and one of my favorite shows, if not my favorite show of all time,” Hymes shared. “I love the music. We’ve been talking with ATI for a couple of years, and one day I got a call from ATI telling me they wanted to do ‘Sweeney Todd’ with CSO. It’s a great orchestral piece, and ATI is great, so when you put us together, it will be strong on both ends. I am really excited about this.” One of Hymes’ goals is to bring CSO to places beyond The Center and to introduce people to a modern day orchestra where one may least expect it. CSO performed a summer concert at Sun King Distillery this summer in the newly completed Midtown Plaza. “We loved playing Sun King,” Hymes said. “We learned a lot and have worked out a lot of kinks, so we’d love to come back and offer a couple of shorter concerts as a teaser for what it is that we do.” Mark your calendars for the upcoming

CSO concert at Mallow Run Winery, presented by Indiana Grown. “The owners [of Mallow Run] used to play in the orchestra,” Hymes said. “I went there, socially, and fell in love with the space. It’s beautiful, and the wine is terrific. They are also very welcoming. We will play a gamut of music from “Hamilton” to some classic pop—it will be a really nice mix. People can bring a blanket and a picnic, have their wine and just chill out on a beautiful September night.” Staying true to CSO’s roots, Hymes promises that they will continue to perform great classical music while integrating a broader range of music and programs that appeal to a broader range of people. “I’m very realistic,” Hymes said. “I think that this [strategy] is going to be the ticket to our continued growth and success. But when you think of CSO, I want you to think that we do a combination of classical and really hip and fun with an excellence in orchestral playing.”

S & GOBLINS CEF’S GHOST ULAR TRADITION IS A SPOOKTAC

There’s much to BOO, I mean do, in Carmel and surrounding areas for the month of October, including the 11th Annual Ghost & Goblins 5K/2K Walk and Run benefitting the Carmel Education Foundation (CEF). CEF’s mission is to support Carmel Clay students in academic achievement and lifelong learning and is directed by two remarkable and dedicated women, Stephanie McDonald and Barbara Danquist.

or the last decade, the Carmel Education Foundation (CEF) has been hosting the annual Ghosts & Goblins family-friendly and healthy event as a fundraiser to benefit Carmel Clay Schools through education grants. For those who may not be aware, CEF has been supporting CCS students and teachers since 1966. CEF has awarded over $2 million in college scholarships to CHS seniors and over $525,000 in education grants. CEF remains dedicated to its founding purpose to award educational grants by fundraising to fund the grants. Classroom grants are awarded up to $700 per teacher, $1,500 per teacher group and up to $2,000 per school. CEF awarded $30,000 to 130 CCS teachers in the 2018–2019 school year. Some of the incredible grants that have been awarded by CEF to CCS teachers include Historical Thinking Matters, a Carmel High School program; Scholastic Magazine Choices, a Carmel Middle School program; Elite Gaming Live and

Hands on Science, both Clay Middle School programs, and a myriad of impressive classroom grants that have been awarded to numerous teachers in all of the district’s elementary schools. Stephanie McDonald, co-director at CEF, added, “Each grant has provided innovative teaching and enrichment activities in the classrooms throughout the school district.” Another remarkable giveback from CEF is its scholarships, including the Lisa Evans Scholarship, available for eligible CHS seniors who either enter the 5K or 2K or volunteer at the event. The $500 scholarship was named in honor of past CEF president Lisa Evans. The health of the CCS district plays a direct role in the overall strength of the Carmel community as a whole. Strong schools help build strong communities. The city of Carmel was recently named “The best place to raise a child in America” by Safewise. com. In recognition of the role that the city’s school system has in attracting and retaining businesses to Carmel and the

importance of the entire community’s support of events and organizations that support CCS, Mayor Jim Brainard stated, “One of the reason’s Carmel is often honored as a best place to live and raise a family is due to the strong schools in our community. The Guild of the Carmel Clay Public Library is proud to welcome seven remarkable authors to Carmel, Indiana, next month for its 15th annual The Guilded Leaf Book & Author Luncheon and its annual Writers at the Pavilion, which is held the evening before the popular luncheon. Both events are held at the beautiful Ritz Charles in Carmel. Writers at the Pavilion offers an opportunity for attendees to network and engage in conversation with the authors and other attendees in a more casual environment. Craig Johnson Margaret Peterson Haddix Margaret Peterson Haddix has written more than 40 books for children and teens, and many of her books have been honored with New York Times bestseller status. Her newest title, “The Remarkables,” is an intriguing mystery with real-life issues that many children face. When a young girl moves to a new town, she is captivated by the people next door, a group of teens known as the Remarkables, who, as if by magic, are there one minute and gone the next. What about the writing process is the most challenging or liberating for you? My writing process often feels like dumping a bunch of puzzle pieces out on a table and trying to figure out how they fit together. Plot, characters, setting, scenes, chapters—do they connect? The most challenging part is when I can’t figure out if I’m even looking at the right puzzle pieces, or if I need to throw some (or all) of them away and get new ones. And the most liberating (and exhilarating) part is when I get that moment of epiphany and just know how everything is supposed to work.

As this event is a fundraiser for our library, what do libraries mean to you as an author? When I was young, we didn’t have a lot of money, so libraries meant the world to me, a gateway to everything in which I might be interested. I think you can judge the strength of a community by its libraries, and that’s something I continue to believe and support today. A novella I wrote, “Spirit of Steamboat,” was selected by the state as One Read Wyoming, and I made a point of visiting all 63 libraries (some of which were a single shelf behind the bar of the local saloon), but before you applaud my selflessness, you should know that my honoraria was a six-pack of Rainier beer, cans preferred, and I haven’t bought beer in about seven years.

Sophie Perinot: Libraries meant something to me long before I was an author—as a child and then a young woman, I spent endless hours at my local public library. In fact, my very first job, at age 15, was at that same library branch, shelving books. Yes indeed, I used to have the Dewey decimal system memorized. Confession: I was really terrible at this job, because pretty much every time I picked a book off my cart to shelve it, I ended up reading the cover copy. Speedy and efficient I was not. But luckily for me, Mrs. K, the head librarian, overlooked my foibles. As an author I love the idea of readers discovering my books at libraries and taking them home … perhaps strapped to the back of their bike as I used to carry mine. Libraries open the world—past, present and future— to those who pass through their doors, and they are important because they give access to literature and information on an equal basis. There is no “pay to play” at a library. What about the writing process is the most liberating for you? Heather Webb: I adore the research portion of writing as well as the revisions stage where the “true writing” happens. Writing that first draft can be grueling sometimes, especially as I slog through the middle. Nothing could be more liberating for me than typing “The End” on a first draft. It means the foundation of a story is in place and I get to move on to the parts I love—really fleshing out the characters, the setting and the story arcs.

It has been an incredible 21st season for the volunteers, vendors and patrons of the Carmel Farmers Market (CFM) and another great year of events and fellowship for the books. As the season winds down, there is still much to do at the market and a smorgasbord of late summer/early fall products to purchase from all of your favorite vendors.

the Carmel Winter Market—opening in October. Two of these artists, in particular, are deserving of recognition for their contributions: Blair Clark and Jules Muck. “The Carmel Farmers Market has always felt that, besides bringing the best of Indiana-grown and/or produced foods to the residents of Carmel, that it should play a broader role in regard to the culture of the community,” CFM president Ron Carter shared. “For years, the Market Committee has made music part of the Saturday morning market scene. Last year, the committee added music to the Winter Market by hiring Blair Clark to perform during many of the winter Saturdays.” As a resident of Carmel for 30 years, Clark has a strong passion for supporting the city’s amenities such as the farmers markets and enjoys contributing to the magical atmosphere that the CFM volunteers and vendors create. “It’s like an extended family,” Clark said. “It’s [Carmel Winter Market] an eclectic group of vendors and marketgoers—much like the summer market. People can shop and eat, and there’s an area where people can sit and eat and watch the performances. When I’m performing, kids will come up and dance, and then the parents start dancing with their kids, and there’s all this positive energy created. We even get some of the vendors to come up and sing, and it’s really a wonderful family atmosphere.” Clark is known for his outstanding pop, jazz, R&B and soul renditions, as well as his innate ability to fill a room with an energy that energizes the soul— especially right before the holidays at the Winter Market. “We play a lot of holiday songs, and everybody is singing at the market,” he said. “It’s truly a very magical atmosphere, and I hope to see many people from our community there this season.” When Ron Carter, the Market Committee president, saw in a newspaper article that nationally known muralist Jules Muck was going to be working for a week in the central Indiana area, he contacted her by email to see if she

Muck said she had an artist friend who lives in Carmel. So, she immediately agreed to do her famous—or infamous— bunny murals, with a family-friendly food theme on the building. You may have seen local news reports about Muck’s mural of Larry Bird in downtown Indy that included her famous bunnies on Bird’s forearm. It created quite a national media buzz. According to Carter, “We were able to accomplish three things by work-

ing with Jules. First, we were able to continue adding in a meaningful way to the artistic culture of Carmel by bringing a nationally recognized art installation to the city. Second, we were able to bring much higher visibility to the site of the Winter Market. When people ask us where the market is located, instead of telling them it is right across the street from the water tower, we can now tell them to just look for the bunnies on the building. Third, we wanted to bring a sense of whimsy to

the area that would appeal to everyone, no matter their age.” Muck began her career as a graffiti artist in Europe and throughout the U.K. in the ’90s. She has been published in numerous books and has had worked on numerous collaborative projects with notable muralists and fellow artists. She was one of the first females to paint at 106th and Park Hall, of fame in NYC, and did installation with the Guerrilla Girls for the lobby of the Bronx Museum of Art. Muck has painted murals for TV shows and movies, including “Under the Dome,” “Mr. Mercedes” and “IT.” Muck’s humanitarian efforts have included painting murals in Syrian refugee camps and Miami’s Juvenile Detention Center. Muck’s real passion is to paint on things she’s not supposed to paint on, but those opportunities are rapidly decreasing as she is invited to paint on more and more walls throughout the nation. “I went really big with some very basic images that celebrates the norm,” Muck said as she explained her mural, which is now visible at the Wire Factory in Carmel. “I didn’t do anything wild and fancy or complicated. I took everyday, basic images and blew them up to extraordinary proportions. I can’t tell anybody what to think when they look at it, and I hope they have their own experiences, but for me it was the whole ‘less is more,’ and I love painting my bunnies. These are not like my ‘normal’ bunnies—these are really well-behaved bunnies. Anybody who knows my work knows what’s up when they see this mural. I try to paint for the people. Every time I paint, I have a good intention to please people and make them laugh or make them feel happy. I apply this Oscar Wilde quote to my work, ‘Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. Carmel’s own Nishesh Basavareddy is a rising star among his peers throughout the national and international tennis community. The Carmel High School sophomore recently captured two titles—boys 14 singles champion and boys 14 doubles finalist—in the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Boys’ 14 National Clay Court Championships with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Dylan Tsoi of California. The weeklong tournament was held at the Jimmy Evert Tennis Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this past July. Basavareddy was one of the 192 players representing 49 of the 50 states that qualified for singles play along with 99 doubles teams.

his is Basavareddy’s second national championship win, but he was unseeded after he suffered a torn meniscus. After rehabbing his knee, Basavareddy qualified for the 2019 Midwest Closed Championships and managed to win the 16s Boys’ singles title. And after a yearlong hiatus, the 14-year-old athlete has made a remarkable return to the courts, reclaiming his title as the nation’s best in his age group and one of the best teenage tennis players in the world. “After the surgery, I started rehabbing as soon as possible so that I could try to make my recovery as fast as possible and strengthen all the parts that I needed to focus on,” Basavareddy said. “I tried to work a lot on my upper body and still try to find ways to improve. I could still work

on my strokes to make sure that I didn’t lose the feel of the racket. When I came back, I felt like I wasn’t too far behind and was able to get back into the game pretty fast with the help of my trainer and therapist.” Basavareddy began playing as a young child, along with his brother, Nishanth, a CHS senior, having been introduced to the sport by his father. His family moved from California to Carmel, Indiana, when he was in the fourth grade, and both brothers began training with Brian Smith, who has been working with the brothers over the years, improving their physical strength as well as their individual games. “We [my brother and I] also played soccer, but once we got a little older, we both started to take more interest in

tennis,” Basavareddy said. “I competed in a junior tournament in the 8-and-under, and both national and international players were there. That was when I started facing more competition, and when I won those tournaments, I started to realize that I could go further if I started spending more time training— on and off the court.” As a sixth grader, Basavareddy won his first national championship at the USTA National Winter Championships in Boys’ 12s singles. Basavareddy added, “I had won level 2s and 3s before that, but that was my first level 1 tournament.” A rising star in the tennis community, Basavareddy has competed throughout the U.S. and also in Europe. He participated in the Longines’ 16-player

A rising star in the tennis community, Basavareddy has competed throughout the U.S. and also in Europe. international event, played during the 2019 French Open. “After I played in two other tournaments and felt like I matched up pretty well with my opponents, I was ready to go back into national tournaments,” Basavareddy said. “I had been keeping my routines and doing all the things that I’ve been working on for the past couple of months, and it has ended up working pretty well for me.” Basavareddy didn’t have much time to kick back and enjoy his championship win in Florida as he had to immediately begin training for the United States’ 14-and-under team that competed in the World Junior Tennis Finals at the TK Plus Centre in Prostejov, Czech Republic,

He was one of three boys on the U.S. team, and his 11-0 singles and doubles matches contributed to the U.S. clinching their sixth tournament title. “I didn’t have too much time to reflect on the USTA win because I had to start training for the team tournament in the Czech Republic and had to make sure that my body was at 100% again,” Basavareddy stated. “Now that they’re done, I’ve had time to reflect and be happy about it.” While he’s more than accomplished on both, Basavareddy prefers clay courts to hard courts. “I love clay courts, but I’m also good with hard courts,” he said. “I like clay courts a little better because they’re a little slower [play] than hard courts, and I am

a little bit more comfortable on clay. It’s easier to slide on them, and when we lived in California, we belonged to a [tennis] club where I played a lot on clay courts.” Basavareddy is currently training and improving his game in preparation for a busy winter tournament schedule. “There is an international tournament that takes place in Miami, Florida, and that’s a pretty big tournament,” he shared. “I’m looking forward to that, but this is a period of training and improving for me.” When he’s not on the court training as a reigning national champion, Basavareddy is like any other teenager who likes to hang out with his friends and enjoys his hobbies off the court. “I usually have quite a bit of homework, so I focus a lot on my homework,” Basavareddy admitted. “My favorite subject is math, but I also like reading in my off time and playing Ping-Pong and other sports with my friends.”
