North High Brewing Taps Into Zionsville It is with great pleasure that we feature North High Brewing on our cover this month. North High Brewing officially opened the doors to its first Indiana location in the space that once housed Nancy Noel’s Colours Restaurant in the Sanctuary at 75 North Main Street, Zionsville, Indiana, on May 20, 2022. North High Brewing was founded in 2011 and has nine locations throughout Ohio. We spoke with North High Brewing Director of Hospitality Grant Marsh about the brewery’s first location in the Indiana market and its relationship with COhatch—a coworking and social space company that originated in Ohio and is sharing the historic, former church structure as a result of an intentional partnership formed between the two businesses. The year 2022 is a monumental year for the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library (HMMPL). The HMMPL Foundation will host its popular Book Ball event, marking 60 years since the original Book Ball fundraiser was hosted by Psi Iota Xi to benefit the library. Formalized as a 501(c)(3) in 1998, the HMMPL Foundation’s sole purpose is to support HMMPL and its vast array of programs and services.
T
o date, the foundation has surpassed $1 million in grants to HMMPL and continues to donate thousands of dollars each year to support technical, logistical and outreach initiatives. This year’s Book Ball will feature many ways to support HMMPL, including a yet-to-be-determined Fund-a-Need item specifically for the library’s new second location, currently under construction.
MEETING THE NEEDS OF A GROWING COMMUNITY HMMPL is immensely proud of its offerings that it provides to its cardholders
throughout its service area and is excited about the expansion of that service area with the forthcoming grand opening of its new branch located in Worth Township. I spoke with both Sarah Moore, executive director of HMMPL, and Jamia Alexander Ball, Whitestown branch manager at HMMPL, about the current status of the Whitestown Branch that is located at 6310 East Albert S. White Drive in Whitestown. The Whitestown branch grand opening is projected to take place during the summer of 2023. Meanwhile, HHMPL is providing a diverse menu of programs, including its summer reading

program, Dive Into Reading, that runs from May 25–July 23. “When I first came to HMMPL, one of my major goals was to put into the forefront of our conversations that we are a place where people can gather, connect to each other and provide resources for the community,” Moore said. “We were working on our current strategic plan [2020–2023] back in 2019, and we talked with the community about what they wanted and needed. That ‘connection’ piece came up again and again. We’re making sure that we’re meeting people where they are, meeting the diverse needs of our

We want everyone to feel more connected to each other, and that’s part of what we do— we help develop those connections.” community, and we’ve put a lot of effort into doing that. We want everyone to feel more connected to each other, and that’s part of what we do—we help develop those connections.” Alexander Ball added, “We’re going to have a lot of programs in conjunction with the summer reading program, and we will have other large events throughout the summer before our finale at the end. So, we’ve got lots of things planned that include a book signing with [Zionsville resident] Rob Harrell, who will come to both the Zionsville location and to the Whitestown Boys and Girls Club. That will be exciting to have him come, and we’ll do some fun activities along with the book signing of his latest book.” In addition to these events, Alexander Ball shared, “Our finale is going to be a Touch-a-Truck [event]. Everyone loves Touch-a-Truck. We’re going to have Grace Food Truck, and people will be able to purchase breakfast and lunch for that.”
AN AGE-OLD INSTITUTION OFFERING MODERN AMENITIES As the libraries throughout our nation continue to evolve and find new ways to connect their communities as well as remain a repository for timeless and treasured collections, HMMPL is thrilled to bring the library to people via its Bookmobile. “We are going through our entire service district: Eagle, Union and Worth Townships,” Moore shared. “We’re hitting more places in Worth and Union [Townships] because those are areas that aren’t so near to us, and it’s helping to get the awareness out about what we’re doing and that the [Whitestown] branch is coming!” Moore and Alexander Ball spoke about how HMMPL is partnering with the respective towns’ parks and recreation departments, collaborating with them on programing and looking at how they can participate at community events such as

farmers markets and Earth Day celebrations, etc. If your organization, HOA, senior community or educational center would like the HMMPL Bookmobile to visit you, please contact the staff at HMMPL and let them know. They are looking for more areas to visit this year! As we spoke about the new branch and what it will offer the community upon its completion, Alexander Ball shared that the trails and outdoor spaces will be a treasure trove for new and creative programing that the branch in Zionsville is limited on providing due to its small footprint. Alexander Ball mentioned that she is looking forward to the Whitestown Branch offering ecological programs, citizen science programs and other community-minded and innovative programs. “We can do a ton of things in that open space and along the trails,” Alexander Ball said. “We can host outdoor movies and utilize the outdoor space in creative ways. The back porch area is going to be a great place to just read and host book clubs out there. This is all going to be really exciting.”

Sirius/XM Radio’s Seth Rudetsky is bringing his hi-larious one man show Seth’s Big Fat Broadway Show to Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael. It is described as a combination of “America’s Funniest Home Videos”, “The Tony Awards” and “The Daily Show” and has played from coast to coast for the last decade. Seth is known as “The Voice of Broadway Across America” and “The Mayor Of Broadway” (which is what Audra McDonald calls him). He’s worked for over two decades on Broadway as an actor, writer, pianist and conductor, and has been involved with the biggest blockbusters ever, including Les Misérables, Phantom, Ragtime, and The Producers, as well as writing for both the Tony and Grammy Awards. Seth’s Big Fat Broadway Show is a 90 minute hysterical romp featuring Rudetsky’s trademark “deconstructions,” in which he uses his amazing audio/video collection to break down brilliant performances from beloved Broadway divas (Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley) as well as showcasing mind-boggling performances like The Osmonds singing a medley from Fiddler On The Roof.

We were pleased to speak with Mike Simmons, founder of SILO Auto Club in Indianapolis, Jay Farmer, a principle of The Motor District in Westfield, and Chris Diasio, president of Putnam Park Road Course in Greencastle. All three of these automotive enthusiasts have something in common besides being enthusiasts and collectors—they are building a community that is bringing together current and future automotive collectors in a fun and unique way.

We spoke with each of the three aforementioned sponsors about their respective properties and the enthusiast/ collector culture that they are building.
SILO Auto Club – Indianapolis
What started out of necessity for car storage became a passion for bringing car enthusiasts together for a more social aspect of car collecting. Simmons moved from Zionsville to downtown Indianapolis and wanted easy access to his collector cars. He purchased a building that was more space than he needed, and the SILO Auto Club was soon after established. Today, the club has evolved into a vibrant and hip social club for its members. “We ended up building out the club, put in a kitchen and got a liquor license,” Simmons shared. “We’re a private club for car people. We’ve got members from the Lockerbie area and throughout downtown
that have relatively expensive real estate but no room for car storage. We also have folks from Fishers, Carmel, Zionsville, the southside and from all over who keep their cars at the club. We also host a number of events at the club on a regular basis.” The SILO is hosting a new series, “The Pitz’ Stop with John Pitz,” in collaboration with Artomobilia co-founder John Pitz. “We’re starting to do more events with music, and we asked John [Pitz] to help us out,” Simmons shared. “He’s such a great guy, and we’ve started a monthly series kind of thing where we’ll do car-oriented panels and interviews. The first one was with John and Paul Page, which was a lot of fun. We might do some around vintage racing, rallies and around [car] collecting. So, the series will be an automotive enthusiast-themed topic every month as we go forward.” The SILO Auto Club houses 60–65 cars in its main facility, and Simmons shared that they have recently expanded into another building just down the street that can house an additional 40–50 more. “We’re looking at potentially expanding the building and looking at other storage options there in the building,” Simmons said. “As we come out of COVID, we’re beginning to think about [expanding] a little bit more proactively.” For more information on SILO Auto Club, visit siloautoclub.com/silo-auto-club-conservancy/.

Motor District – Westfield
The Motor District is working to become the center of gravity for the Hamilton County automotive community. “With our 12-acre campus and the 13 buildings we have planned that will house 120-150 garages for collectors, enthusiasts and hobbyists of all types,” Farmer shared. “The campus also includes three supporting commercial business buildings. Motor District is a unique venue that caters to the community and lifestyle needs of those with a passion for their interests.” Farmer continued, “Without exception, it’s the perfect home for automotive enthusiasts, but it will also be a community for many other interests, hobbies and passions—motorcycles, boats, RVs, ATVs, home office, urban cabin or getaway.” This spring, Motor District broke ground on its Phase 2 buildings that will be completed by summer. “Phase 2 buildings have a new variety of sizes and configurations,” Farmer stated. “The pace of interest and sales in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 indicates that we’re on to something.” The Motor District is more than simply storage; it offers a private, secure community that its clients own and customize to meet their needs and the needs of their families. “As a result, we see a wide variation in the build-outs and uses, some that are focused on collection display and entertainment, others around recreation and still others focused on the practical aspects of extending the footprint of your primary residence,” Farmer shared. “From an investment/financial perspective, ownership at Motor District makes a lot of sense when compared to alternatives both financially and practically. Motor District makes it very easy to own
and customize with everything you need and nothing you don’t need; the ability to own and access a space anytime you wish is compelling.” The Motor District is a great community venue for all types of events, not least of which are automotive-related. “We are expanding our events that we host each week beyond our open houses featuring partners like Pristine Auto Spa, Hagerty, Dynamat and others, to include Cars & Coffee—we’re calling it Mocha District— Garage Club events and even IndyCar and Formula 1 Watch Parties,” Farmer said. “You’ll also see our owners host an increasing number of private and public events in their spaces. Putnam Park Road Course — Greencastle
Putman Park is so much more than a racetrack for racing teams, car clubs and enthusiasts alike. It is a 200-plus-acre park and country club for members, and they host social events for the members and their families as well. Additionally, Putnam Park offers on-site storage for car collectors. Diasio shared what makes his racetrack, facilities and garages unique from others in the region. “Putnam Park is not just for racing,” Diasio emphasized. “It’s for car clubs and car enthusiasts. Even though it’s 30 miles west of Indy, it’s still an integral part of local car enthusiasts, especially in Zionsville, Carmel, the northside and southside of Indianapolis. We have lots of people
who are interested in our facilities. We have everything from Hondas to exotics running together. Groups are based on your experience level, not necessarily your car speed.” Diasio shared that his goal is to get a lot of people who own beautiful cars to bring their cars out of their garages and take them out to Putnam Park track to “stretch their legs.” “What I’m really trying to do is get people who aren’t necessarily into just ‘track days,’ but people with nice cars who just want to stretch their legs and don’t care about lap times,” Diasio expressed. “You can do it in safe environment, a few times a year at least, and enjoy the car for what it was designed for. I don’t think Enzo Ferrari designed these cars thinking, “God, I hope they sit in garages and never get driven—that would be my ideal situation!” Diasio also spoke about the social aspect of his racetrack and clubhouse. “It’s also about the social aspect of the club,” Diasio stated. “The members come out, drive the track and then they go hang out at the clubhouse, get on the simulators, shoot some pool, have some drinks at the [clubhouse] bar and talk about cars, work and life. We have members with Mustangs and members with Ferraris. They all have their own passions, but just like at Artomobilia—we all come together because we love cars.” Putman Park also offers climate-controlled garages with TVs and first-rate security systems. “I’m not building anymore of the oldstyle, private garages,” Diasio explained. “You’re isolating yourself. I opened this ‘open-concept’ garage in 2020 that holds 12 cars—six and six—and you’re surrounded by all these beautiful cars. It’s like you’re in your own little [car] museum. We’re also different in how we construct our garages. It’s all concrete block construction. Race teams love our garages because they are topflight garages that other tracks that are considered great tracks don’t have. The Center for the Performing Arts has announced its most robust season since its inception and is bringing in commercial “big” shows like Marie Osmond, Michael Bolton, Johnny Mathis, Boney James, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Diana Krall, Kevin Nealon, Lewis Black, Marc Cohn and Shawn Colvin and so many more exhilarating performers from all over the globe!
I
sat down with the center’s CEO/President Jeff McDermott who shared his thoughts on this upcoming season. McDermott also reflected on how the center has earned a reputation in the industry as a must-play venue. Creating Experiences for All The center’s 2022–23 season exudes diversity and boasts a magnificent lineup of talent from all over the globe. While the center is proud to have successfully presented 46 performances in its most recent season, it is even more excited to announce its largest lineup—to date—at its annual season announcement event. Plus, there are even more shows to come and
will be announced throughout the season as they become finalized and official! According to McDermott, the focus is on creating “experiences” and not just booking 70-plus shows. “There are shows and then then are experiences,” McDermott expressed. “All of our shows are wonderful, but when everything is clicking with the artist and the audience—there’s a feeling in the hall that is an elevated feeling. We’ve had some phenomenal shows, and looking at this season, we’ve never had this many [shows] booked at this point, heading into a new season.” McDermott added, “We are excited about putting together the most robust season we’ve ever
had, and I think we have a reputation in this industry now. It’s been 11 years in the making. We worked for it, the community worked for it, and I think we’re enjoying the benefits of all of those efforts.” When asked about the process of building the new season’s lineup, McDermott said, “Part of our mission is to bring performances here that give this community a taste of everything that the universe has to offer, and that includes performers who may not be as commercially well known, and big shows like Sting, John Legend and Ben Folds. We announced a big season, which is incredible, but you ain’t seen nothing yet. We’ve got more coming!” The center’s focus has shifted from surviving 2020 to recovery in 2021 to a return to business as usual in 2022. It is also placing a more intentional focus on diversity—as showcased in its seasonal programming—within its internal operations with staff and board positions in addition to its programming. “We don’t make widgets here— our products are our performances and educational opportunities,” McDermott stated. “The more diversity we bring to those, the more we drive [diversity] in this community. Our goal is not just the 70-plus shows—that are diverse in every way that you can define diversity—but it is to also create a sense of inclusion and to create experiences for an entire community.” Get the alerts on newly announced shows first! Elizabeth Wiest Johnson

Publisher’s Note: I felt compelled to share a story about my first meeting with Liz Johnson. We met at the office on Wild Air Farms in 2013 to do an interview. Well into her 80’s at that time, she had just flown in from California earlier that day but was willing to sit down for the interview late one beautiful summer afternoon that ran in to early evening. I was captivated for over two hours by the stories she shared of her life and of a special time gone by. As it was time to go, I asked if there was someone picking her up or could I give her a ride. She smiled and said that wasn’t necessary as she donned a big floppy hat, dropped her cane in the back seat of her Jaguar convertible and headed down the road. It was an experience I will never forget. What an amazing woman!
O
ne of Zionsville’s most gracious and accomplished residents passed away on April 30, 2022, at the age of 94. Mrs. Elizabeth “Liz” Wiest Johnson was the owner of Wild Air Farms and was a passionate equestrian who devoted her life to “hunting and showing and loved it all.” Johnson’s philanthropic contributions to the community—specifically to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis—are worthy of being mentioned and remem-
bered in this issue of Zionsville Monthly as a tribute to an extraordinary woman who impacted our Zionsville community. In August of 2013, Johnson was featured on the cover of Zionsville Monthly, and subsequent articles–in this publication– featured Johnson’s beloved Traders Point Hunt Charity Horse Show (TPHCHS) on numerous occasions. I had the extreme honor of volunteering for the Johnson family and served on the TPHCHS committee as the publicity

chair in the final years of the nationally renowned six-day, four-ring show that ran for nearly four decades and generated more than $1 million to charities from its inception. I thought it prudent to pay my respects to this remarkable lady and highlight the vast number of accomplishments and contributions that Johnson achieved that benefited Zionsville, Boone County, the state of Indiana and the equestrian world.

A Woman of Impeccable Taste and Many Talents Born to the late Edward Hubbard Wiest and Marguerite Anna Jackson Wiest on April 10, 1928, Johnson was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. Johnson attended Public School 84, Shortridge High School her freshman year and graduated from Tudor Hall High School in 1946. At age 18, Johnson launched her career as a competitive rider, entering her first horse show in Devon, Pennsylvania, and placing 4th out of 68 horses in the Working Hunter Stake. It was just one of her many accomplishments in the show ring over the years. Johnson married Sylvester Johnson, Jr., on Oct. 31, 1948. She and Sylvester raised and bred thoroughbred racehorses, and it was Liz Johnson who trained them to go to the racetrack. She won a race at the Royalton Steeplechase in 1976. She won firsts in the Royal Winter Horse Show at Toronto, Canada, and at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Johnson rode with Wilson Dennehy and George Caulkins at Madison Square Garden, winning the Hunter Team Class in 1966. In 1996, at the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden, Johnson was awarded a prestigious Living Legend Award. Throughout the years, Johnson won countless championships and owned 38 horses, many of them well known. On May 29, 2012, Johnson’s horse “Super Flash” was inducted into the Merion Cricket Club Hall of Fame in Haverford, Penn-
sylvania. She rode him in the Amateur Owner Hunter Division. And on May 26, 2015, Johnson herself was inducted into the Merion Cricket Club Hall of Fame. Johnson was prominently featured in Town and Country Magazine’s August 1951 edition spotlighting Indianapolis and again in its August 1980 issue. She also appeared on the cover of the Jan. 21, 1957 issue of Sports Illustrated, roller-skating at the George Lyons estate in Bimini, Florida. Johnson was an avid skier who received her ski instructor’s license in Aspen. She skied competitively in races in Aspen and Vail, winning gold, silver and bronze medals. She was also captain of her bowling team and won the Ladies’ Singles Tennis Tournament in 1960 at Woodstock Club.
Is This Heaven? No, It’s Wild Air Farms I can recall the first time I drove up the long gravel road off of Hunt Club Road to the top of the drive and cast my eyes upon the 250 acres of pristine land on which the horse-show grounds are located. Wild Air Farms is the most astonishing nature preserve and show grounds in Indiana, in my opinion. Those of us who spent any measurable amount of time on these grounds have experienced some of the

best views in Zionsville—comparable to some of the most esteemed horse farms in Lexington, Kentucky. Johnson founded the Traders Point Hunt Charity Horse Show in 1977 and chaired it until she and her family decided to close that particular chapter of their lives. TPHCHS began as a small two-ring, three-day country show and quickly grew into one of the most prestigious sanctioned horse shows recognized by the American Horse Show Association. At its peak, TPHCHS drew in over 10,000 spectators and hosted more than 1,000 of the top horses and equestrians from the United States, Canada and Europe. TPHCHS also featured the top

assumed every field and staff position at one time or another and was elected Master of Foxhounds at TPH in 1983. Johnson was always proud to say, “We’ve never killed a fox. Ours is a ‘drag hunt,’ where the scent of the fox is laid by the drag boy and the hunt across the land is planned ahead.” Johnson was in charge of the registered Midwest Hunts when she was on the board of the Master of Fox Hounds (MFH) for six years.
A Legacy for the Ages grand prix and hunter/jumper riders from across the country. The Chronicle of the Horse, a leader in horse-show publications, ranked it as one of the five best shows in America. The event’s proceeds supported Riley Hospital for Children. Wild Air Farms has been the site of the Indianapolis Symphony’s “Symphony at Wild Air Farms,” the annual Traders Point Hunt Cyclocross Bike Race and the Crows’ Nest Skeet Club, of which Johnson was an honorary member. As a member of Traders Point Hunt Club, Johnson hunted the hounds as Huntsman at Traders Point Hunt for many years and was awarded her Master Fox Hound colors in 1948 by MFH Cornelius O. Alig, Sr. Since then, she has
Johnson served the community as a member of the Indianapolis Garden Club, the Junior League of Indianapolis, the Christamore Aid Society and the Christamore House Guild, for whom she performed as a Rockette in its fundraiser at the Murat Temple each year it was held. She was an honorary member of the Indianapolis Athletic Club. She was also a member of the Indianapolis Dramatic Club and Lambs Club. Johnson received The Sagamore of the Wabash from Gov. Frank O’Bannon on Dec. 14, 2002. On April 30, 2010, she received the Park Tudor School Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing alumni who have made substantial contributions to their communities. Johnson

also received the United States Equestrian Federation Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the sport and the support she has given to literally thousands of riders through the years. I can attest that Mrs. Elizabeth Wiest Johnson will be greatly missed by all who knew her and were impacted by her generosity and passion for community— especially the equestrian community. It is my hope that her memory is honored and never forgotten here in Zionsville. And I hope that the stories about TPHCHS in its full glory—the majesty of the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales that presented there, the live national coverage by ESPN, the exceptional country market that took place on-site, the Friday evening and Sunday morning grand prix that brought in people of distinction and the magnificent horses and riders that showed there—are preserved and shared so that the current and future generations of Zionsville residents understand the greatness that once took place on these grounds. And more importantly, so that locals can learn about the inspiring and extraordinary woman Mrs. Elizabeth Wiest Johnson was. Boone County Commissioner Tom Santelli, a resident of Zionsville, member of the TPHC and former TPHCHS Committee member, shared his thoughts on the life and passing of Johnson. “Mrs. ‘Liz’ Johnson choreographed her life around horses and equestrians,” Santelli shared. “Liz was a very humble woman who brought so much to Indiana. Her farms were a tribute to ecology, diversity and the equestrian sports.” Santelli concluded, “Liz herself was such a great gift to our area, with so many memories traversing across a great spectrum of history. She made the world—and Zionsville—a better place.”

It is with great pleasure that we feature North High Brewing on our cover this month. North High Brewing officially opened the doors to its first Indiana location in the space that once housed Nancy Noel’s Colours Restaurant in the Sanctuary at 75 North Main Street, Zionsville, Indiana, on May 20, 2022. EXPANDING INTO A BRAND-NEW MARKET
N
orth High Brewing was founded in 2011 and has nine locations throughout Ohio. We spoke with North High Brewing Director of Hospitality Grant Marsh about the brewery’s first location in the Indiana market and its relationship with COhatch—a coworking and social space company that originated in Ohio and is sharing the historic, former church structure as a result of an intentional partnership formed between the two businesses. Olivia Ortmann, the community manager of COhatch, shared, “Our Indianapolis market is growing so we added a third [COhatch] location in this market. We are
founded out of Columbus, Ohio, and this location is our 17th overall.” Marsh added, “Prior to the pandemic in 2019, COhatch reached out to one of our founders, Gavin Meyers, about an opportunity. COhatch is a community of small businesses and incubator for startups, and they wanted to expand with the partnership of a brewery/brewpub to develop into a restaurant group. We’ve done two already in Cleveland, two in Cincinnati, and this [Zionsville] is the first of three in the Indianapolis market.” Marsh and Ortmann explained that the Zionsville location is being used as a benchmark for what is to come with their other locations. “Zionsville is our brewpub concept,”

Marsh elaborated. “We’ll be opening our pizza concept at Circle Center downtown later this summer, and next spring, we’ll be opening our Broad Ripple location that will be a more polished, upscale version of the brewpub. So, we’ll have three different concepts in the Indianapolis market attached to the North High Brewing Brand.”
THE NORTH HIGH BREWING EXPERIENCE For Marsh and his team, NHB prioritizes the overall guest experience above anything else. “We want to welcome everybody and want them to meet the faces of North High,” Marsh expressed. “Obviously, we were founded on beer, but what really makes the experience whole is the com-

bination of the food and hospitality. Hospitality is an emotion—not a definition. We’re not just beer, and we’re not just food, but we’re about the way we make the guests feel.” We met with the NHB Zionsville staff, and they were inspired by Zionsville’s sense of community and walkability. They are eager to create new experiences for their guests and write a new chapter for the historic space in which they now reside. “This is our second location that has been a repurposed building, and, in our opinion, this is the most beautiful location that we’ve opened collaboratively,” Marsh stated. “We’re looking to repurpose and keep the history of each market that we go into because we’re not a cook-
ie-cutter, copy-and-paste organization. We like to consider what is native to that market that we’re going into and grasp on to that rich history and the culture of what is provided in that neighborhood, put our spin on it and be the best version of ourselves for that particular market.” Patrons of NHB Zionsville can expect a remarkable menu consisting of a variety of options offering both traditional “pub” fare as well as health-conscious and vegan offerings. All of NHB’s sauces and dressings are made in-house. We sampled and previewed some of the dishes during our visit as well as one of NHB’s seasonal brews, Beware of the Friendly Dragon, a Hazy Double IPA. A complete list of NHB’s beers, cocktails and menu items is published on the website, but the

highlights we sampled included blistered balsamic Brussel sprouts with candied bacon, roasted grape tomato and balsamic dressing—made in-house. Other notable menu items are the sweet potato waffle fries, fried pickle chips that are brined in-house, hand breaded and served with avocado ranch. The pickle brine is used in other menu items as well as in NHB’s Bloody Mary mix. NHB’s house burger boasts a delectable “North High Sauce,” and the Hot Nash flatbread features Nashville hot grilled chicken, jalapeño relish—that is made inhouse—red onions, house pickles, cheddar cheese, ranch and hot honey drizzle. This was taste tested by members of our team and was given an excellent rating for flavor! And for those with a hankering for peanut butter and other sweets, NHB makes its own pies and cookies. The peanut butter pie features house peanut butter filling, whipped cream topping, chopped peanut butter cups and a chocolate stout reduction in a chocolate graham cracker crust. NHB’s wings sauces are made from beer that is boiled down to a certain consistency with added spices and/or honey. The Honey Wheat Lager is used in NHB’s barbecue sauce, and the Pale Ale is used in its Buffalo garlic sauce. It’s the consistency of its brews and quality of the ingredients that gives NHB a solid reputation as a brewery and restaurant. In addition to a unique and cool vibe within its interior, NHB offers additional seating space on its exceptional west-face patio that looks onto the historic brick street. There is also an event space for private events that is located in the lower level of the building. Marsh added, “The event space downstairs can accommodate up to about 50 people. It is with great delight that we highlight the accomplishments of Zionsville Community High School graduate Chris Spillman. Spillman is the first athletic manager to receive the Boone County Basketball Hall of Fame (BCB HOF) scholarship.
E
arlier this year, Spillman was named as one of two Eagles named South All-Stars who will represent the ZCHS Football program in the Indiana Football Coaches Association North-South All-Star Game at North Central on July 15. ZCHS’ Colin Price, a senior running back, was the other young man named.
Raising the Bar for Future Managers Throughout his high school career, Spillman shared that he has been a committed member of the basketball and
football programs at ZCHS as a valuable manager. He hopes to have risen the bar for future managers as well. Spillman began his high school athletic managerial career under former ZCHS basketball head coach Shaun Busick and also with the football program under coach Scott Turnquist. “At this point [freshman year going into sophomore year], I was fairly involved [as a manager] and showed up to all the practices and games,” Spillman said. “My roles kept expanding as the years went on. Going into my junior year, we had a

[basketball] coaching change, and coach Howell came in.” Spillman described his duties and roles as “going the extra mile” and was exposed to even more experiences as a manager working with coaches Howell and Turnquist that have not only awarded him accolades and a scholarship but have prepared him for his collegiate journey. “This past summer, I decided to go all out and helped with basketball over the summer, which was three days a week from 6 to 8 a.m., and then after that, I helped with all of our youth camps, which

was from 9 to 11 a.m. So, in total, I usually would get there around 5:30 each morning and was roughly there for six hours or so. And then after that, we had football practice most days.” When Spillman wasn’t working at a practice, exhibition or summer camp, he was working at the local Meijer.
managers, Spillman expanded his role by helping launch social media platforms for the programs and growing followers in his free time. “In the past, [athletic] managers haven’t been quite as involved, and I just want them to know they can be super involved as a manager and really make a difference,” Spillman stated. “The athletic internship and basketball and football management [experiences] have prepared me for my future interests, which are sports management and being either a coach or an athletic director. I am fortunate to be going to Indiana State University next year and will start there over the summer as a basketball manager. Coach Howell put in some nice words for me. And I’m really appreciative for all these great coaches that I’ve worked with. The [ZCHS] Athletic Department has been incredible for giving me all these opportunities over the years.” We wish you all the best, Chris Spillman!
Dreams Don’t Work Unless You Do Spillman has participated in the ZCHS Athletic Department’s internship program throughout his senior year in preparation for his next chapter at Indiana State University. “I was there two periods a day, and with that first semester, I helped set up football games and helped with various tasks and whatever they needed me to do,” Spillman shared. “It has been a great experience. And being able to go with the football [program] to the state championship— two years in a row—has been an incredible experience.” In addition to the many responsibilities and duties that fall upon the athletic
