Aloha!
Get Ready for ZEF Bash 2024!
Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Courtesy of ZEF
Join us on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the Golf Club of Indiana Cardinal Room for ZEF Bash 2024, presented by Barnes and Thornburg, LLP and Skillman Corporation.
This year’s ZEF Bash is bringing island vibes with a brand-new luau-inspired theme! While the event is keeping its signature casual atmosphere, guests are encouraged to dress in anything comfortable they already have in their closets. Whether it’s jeans and sunglasses, a Hawaiian shirt or your favorite sundress, the goal is to have fun and enjoy a “leid”-back evening. Adding to the excitement, the Zionsville Education Foundation (ZEF) is thrilled to announce a new musical act for 2024—get ready to dance the night away with the talented band Living Proof!
ZEF’S MISSION
In September 1995, a group of forward-thinking Zionsville community members formed a nonprofit foundation with a mission “to serve its school community by providing funds that promote academic excellence.” In the years since, the Zionsville Education Foundation (ZEF) has awarded over $1.85 million in Classroom, Professional Development, Student Enrichment and Donors Choose matching funds grants.
Through careful financial investments and meticulous stewardship of corporate and community donations, ZEF supports
the future success of all students throughout the Zionsville Community Schools. ZEF recently announced it will award $61,010 in Spring Classroom and Imagine Professional Development Grants. More than 40 educators representing all nine CS schools will receive funds.
ZEF Executive Director Lyle Browne shared that ZEF grants have funded 1,188 grant projects since its inception 29 years ago.
“Zionsville Community Schools is the lowest funded district, per student, in the state of Indiana,” Browne stated. “We have amazing support from parents, families,
teachers and administrators and community members, but ZEF really enables those teachers and administrators to dream big for their students. We fund teachers’ innovative ideas and creative projects that enable them to give their students unique learning opportunities across the district.”
An example of one of the many purposeful grants that have been funded through ZEF is the Inspiring Future Engineers classroom grant. This was awarded to Zionsville Middle School teachers Emily Allen and Emily Smith in the Fall 2022 grant cycle. It gave ZMS students a unique STEM experience. Using Infento Kits, students can immerse themselves in the engineering process and work in groups to build a mode of transportation with minimal environmental impact while reducing emissions. These kits are reusable and will be enjoyed by ZMS students year after year.
“Another student enrichment grant that was awarded [by ZEF] to a group of
students from the high school provided a CNC machine for the maker space,” Browne shared. “It is a great tool for students to learn and is now available at the high school for students to use. This grant was completely student-driven. A CNC machine is like a 3D printer that starts with a block and carves out whatever the students have programmed it to, creating a 3D object.”
A FRESH THEME WITH THE SAME PURPOSE
“We have a new theme for this year’s ZEF Bash, which is luau-inspired,” Brown said. “It is still casual, and we wanted to make sure that we kept it easy for people to attend and to keep it casual and fun! We have a new band, Living Proof, which we understand is a great band and also features ZMS band teacher Josh Weirich. We are grateful to have them, and I think they will add a lot to the event. The ZEF Bash committee has 25 people consistently, and this year’s co-chairs are Andrea Fonseca, Jami Kong and Sarah King.”
usually goes live the Monday or Tuesday before the event, and we will have a gift card pull in addition to our ‘Cap Off the Night’ portion, where we unveil this year’s exclusive ZEF hat that is available for a donation of $75 or more. I love going to all the different [community] events and seeing ZEF hats everywhere, knowing that people are supporting ZCS staff and schools.”
For tickets and detailed event information, visit zionsvilleeducationfoundation.org. Tax-deductible donations can be made through the ZEF website for those who would like to make a financial gift any time of the year.
CERESET IN CARMEL UNLOCKS THE POWER OF BRAIN BALANCE FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH
Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Laura Arick and submitted
Life’s stresses can go beyond mere disruption — prolonged stress can profoundly affect both your brain and body, leading to serious health issues. As the brain serves as your central command center, any imbalance or dysfunction can leave you feeling off and prevent you from performing at your best. Cereset offers a proven, noninvasive solution to help your brain restore its natural balance. By empowering the brain to reset itself, Cereset enables you to experience improved well-being and achieve greater balance in your life.
THE KEY TO A BALANCED BRAIN
Brenda Hanning, owner and Cereset Tech Coach in Carmel, shares the inspiration behind the development of Cereset, a breakthrough technology designed to naturally balance the brain. Unlike other brain relaxation and sleep technologies, Cereset was developed with the understanding that the brain holds the key to the body’s well-being.
Hanning emphasized that Cereset stands apart by allowing the brain to heal itself rather than imposing external stimuli or manipulations.
When asked what inspired the development of Cereset and how it differs from other brain relaxation and sleep technologies, Hanning explained, “The founder of Cereset, Lee Gerdes, suffered from a brutal attack in 1992. Four youths attacked him, one with a baseball bat. For eight years, he sought help for PTSD,
anxiety, insomnia and fits of anger that he suffered from after the attack. Nothing he did was lasting or impactful, so he decided to ‘hack’ his own brain.”
Hanning continued, “Using his background in math, physics, psychology, theology and computer software, he discovered a way to relax and reset his brain. Over time, with research and development, it led to the patented Cereset technology we have today.”
MANAGING STRESS AND IMPROVING RESTFUL SLEEP
Using noninvasive technology that mirrors brainwave patterns, Cereset promotes deep relaxation and restores balance. This leads to more restful sleep and enhanced mental, emotional and physical well-being.
“Cereset helps the brain from the inside out,” Hanning said. “Other modalities are from the outside in and just manage symptoms. Cereset does not force the brain or
use medication or stimulation, and there is no learner in the loop. The wellness technology simply reflects the brain back to itself through engineered tones, and as the reflection happens in real-time, the brain responds by relaxing, resetting and reorganizing itself so that it can better regulate energy, mood, [cope] with stress, sleep, cognitive abilities, healing and all other downstream processes. The brain has information about the whole body, which is why when we cut our finger, it heals, but the brain does not have information about itself. Cereset provides that information to the brain through the engineered tones.”
WHAT CLIENTS EXPERIENCE DURING A CERESET SESSION
Cereset clients find sessions to be very relaxing.
“Clients comfortably recline in a zero-gravity chair with Cereset EEG sensors on their head,” Hanning stared. “We provide earphones, and clients can relax or sleep while the software selects and sends the special tones through the earbuds that are custom to the client’s brain in that moment in time. All clients start with five Cereset sessions. Based on the client, they might have two sessions a week or just one session a week for five weeks. Many clients choose to have periodic tune-ups over time to support their brains. Some clients with deep-set trauma or stress patterns may need ten to 15 sessions to fully reset their brain.”
CLINICAL STUDIES WITH REAL RESULTS
Clinical studies support the effectiveness of Cereset in helping people achieve natural brain balance.
Hanning said, “Cereset has real clinical research with real results. All press releases and peer-reviewed research papers can be found at our website cereset.com. Any child or adult who has experienced trauma or stress can benefit from Cereset. Senior citizens looking to improve focus and mental clarity can benefit from our Anti-Aging and Mental Clarity designs. Anyone suffering from long Covid should give Cereset a try as well. Cereset is for anyone looking for better brain health.”
Hanning concluded, “Cereset offers an introduction session for $99. This gives clients an opportunity to have a base-
line assessment of the stress center and emotional center of their brain to see if they are in a stuck stressed state. During the intro session, we will answer all their questions and get to know them so that we can give them an idea of how many sessions they may need.”
Say yes to restored health and a return to restful nights! If you are seeking a balanced brain, Cereset can help… wellness from the inside out!

I have suffered over seven concussions in my lifetime. Most of them were minor incidents from a bump on the head doing housework or playing at the dog park. Ironically, the most catastrophic concussion occurred when my four-year-old nephew head-butted me in the left temple. From that point forward, my brain changed. I began experiencing post-concussive disorder in 2017.
I tried multiple modalities for relief, attempting to heal my brain and provide the groundwork for it to rewire itself. Eye movement therapy helped. Craniosacral therapy provided me with short-term benefits. I continued, however, to face daily fatigue, misophonia, vision problems and issues with short-term memory.
I Googled “new technology for concussions and brain therapies” and found the Cereset website, along with several scientific studies explaining the process. As a former medical writer, the science mattered to me. I was intrigued by the concept of neurofeedback and intuitively felt that if my brain could listen to itself, it might recover.
After two series of sessions with Brenda, I have experienced significant improvement in my symptoms. My disrupted brain rhythms are correcting themselves. My peripheral vision has improved, along with my energy levels and daily mood. The lobes of my brain are working to put themselves back into harmony. I am eager to continue treatment, and I would urge people to consider this treatment modality like they would any wellness tool.
Cereset presents clients with a unique tool to overcome not only the physical imbalances within the brain but all that follows from a neurological health standpoint. Mood, sleep, learning, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and yes, traumatic brain injury respond to the soft tones created by our own brainwaves. Don’t hesitate to add this deeply relaxing and renewing treatment to your mental conditioning routine.

JACOB BUTLER AS CHARLIE PRICE
My first show at Civic was in 2017. I was Joseph in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Michael [Lasley] texted me and said I should audition for Joseph, and I did. That’s how I got involved with Civic. I’ve been involved in other ways, helping with video production, and during
the pandemic, I was in a couple of the [“Ghost Light”] cabaret fundraisers.
Charlie is fascinating to me … he’s growing up, and his dad is prepping him to take over the factory, laying the groundwork for what he’s being raised to do, and then he finds Nicola, who is doing the same thing but in a different direction. He never really thinks about himself, and it’s not until he’s thrust back into the factory that he thinks about what he wants, who he is and how he can help the people around him. Charlie’s throughline is until he figures out who he is, he cannot accept the people around him. I hope people will walk away from these performances being willing to engage with people they don’t know and learn more about a group of people they’re not necessarily comfortable with. It’s a very timely show, and it’s a good time in our country to be sharing this story.
JONATHAN STUDDARD AS LOLA/SIMON
I started at Civic in 2017 and was in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” along with Jacob [Butler]. Civic has become my second family, and it’s been beautiful. I’ve done “Elf” three times here, and my all-time favorite show is “The Color Purple” — the first all-Black production at Civic in 30 years [2021]. I’m thrilled to be doing “Kinky Boots” for a second time… I’ve done it before with Jacob two years ago, so I’m excited to take another dip into Lola. Lola is very large and in charge. She commands the stage and the room, and I feel like that’s me to a tee! I think there’s so much of the heart of Lola that we end up getting to see in “Not My Father’s Son.”
In my opinion, theater is the most transformative art form, and while I think people come to the theater to be entertained, I also think they should be challenged. I want people to be able to leave, and once the “high” has come down, I hope that people will think about some things that they might struggle with. I hope they say, “Is there a group of people that I look at differently because I don’t understand them, or do I just need to have more conversations with people, or is it something I need to research”? I think it’s about people finding their own personal journeys with what this show means to them and how it applies to their lives.
BRAXTON HISER AS NICOLA
I’m fairly new at Civic as far as performing goes. It was actually Marni [Lemons] who encouraged me to get involved and audition for “Anastasia” [2024]. I was thinking about competing for Miss Indiana USA [as former Miss Indiana 2021], and thanks to Marni, I got back to being involved in and reigniting my love for theater.
As for my character, Nicola is fun to play. She knows what she wants and has this vision of her life. She wants to move to London, get married and live out this dream of hers, but her fiancé has a different idea of what he wants to do and hasn’t been very clear with her about it. She is a “baddy” and wants designer shoes and this posh life. She wants to get out of the small town that she’s grown up in, and I can kind of resonate with that. I know one day, I would love to move to Chicago or New York [City], and I totally get Nicola’s vibe.
I want people to leave [the show] being open to love people for who they are. I work for a church, and my church is all about loving people well … it’s our motto. I want people to come and love people for who they are. That’s what our world needs. We just need people to be loved and to feel seen.
KELSEY MCDANIEL AS LAUREN
I started with Civic last year during “The Prom” [2023]. I’m lucky to have found Civic … it’s such a great community and a great group of people. I’m fortunate that I get to perform here. I’m playing Lauren. She’s super fun to play! I find a lot of similarities to myself in her.
She’s kind of me as a character. She’s funny, witty, quirky and sometimes awkward, especially when it
comes to men. She has a bad history with boyfriends, but she’s also very strong and smart. She’s unapologetically herself, which is something I strive to be in real life. I always enjoy going to the theater and looking up on the stage to find someone who looks like me. Finding someone who’s representative of a different body type, skin color or whatever is such an awesome feeling. I think it is important that we have a lot of different people represented in this show, and I hope people come and find themselves on stage in at least one of the characters.
DIRECTOR SUZANNE FLEENOR
I am insanely proud of the nucleus of people in this show that I have savored working with. I admire
CAST LIST
their talents, authenticity, professionalism and their commitment to the ideal of the show. My journey with Civic started when it was in its second location on Alabama Street when I was in fourth grade, and now, I’m in 224th grade [laughing].
Marni [Lemons] and I spent the better part of the ’80s doing shows at Civic, which was just absolutely terrific. I have directed a number of YAP [Young Artists Program] and mainstage productions at Civic. It is a great joy! What Michael Lasley [Civic’s Executive Artistic Director] has done for Civic, its volunteers, actors and staff is immeasurable. It contributes to its stellar reputation in the community. Civic is committed to making genuine outreach to not only this [Carmel] community but the community at large throughout the metropolitan area.

Janelle Morrison: We are thrilled that you are coming back to Carmel, Indiana. Thank you for including us on this new tour!
Boney James: I’m excited about this [tour] because I love the new music so much, and I’m super proud of it. I’m also excited about coming to Carmel because, honestly, [the Palladium is] one of my favorite venues in the country. It’s such a beautiful place. I always say it looks like a wedding cake on the inside.
The last time we played that venue, it was completely sold out, and the band and I still talk about that night and how the energy was just so crazy. We’re really excited about coming back!
JM: Let’s talk about the brand-new album “Slow Burn” that’s coming off the tail end of your 18th album “Detour” [2023-24] tour. You have a history of wonderful collaborations, and “All I Want is You” with October London is a masterpiece. What is it about this [collaboration] that you are most excited about?
BJ: The first time I heard his voice, which was on the radio just randomly driving in my car last year, I was really taken with it and how wonderful of a singer [London] is. I was really excited when I found out that he is a fan of mine and was interested in coming together and co-writing this song with me. The lyrics and melody that he came up with are just amazing, and his vocals are amazing. I think it’s one of my favorite vocal songs that I’ve ever done. I think [London] is a special talent… he’s got an
old-school voice in a young man’s body. He really brings it, and the way that the sax and the vocal melds together in this particular song is unusually cool.
JM: With regards to the evolution of your sound and music, how have you been able to evolve throughout your career while staying true to your roots?
BJ: I keep practicing as part of it, I think. I practice every day, and I’m always trying to improve my sound. I think a huge part of playing the saxophone is to have a sound that’s unique to you. I listen to my first few records, and I hear some things that I like, and then I listen to my stuff now, and it still sounds like me but better, so I feel like I might be doing something right.
JM: Who were some of your biggest influences when you were just starting out?
BJ: When I was a kid, I listened to the radio a lot. It was sort of a renaissance of R&B at the time. Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder and all these great artists were
making these incredible records that still stand out today. I think it’s some of the best music ever made. So, I was listening to that and simultaneously picked up the saxophone. Then I heard Grover Washington, Jr. in 1975, and that was the first cat that I heard who was combining the kind of R&B groove that I loved and sort of song-oriented melodic approach with the saxophone that I also loved, and that’s kind of the tradition that I’m carrying on today.
JM: We’re going to elevate the energy that you felt the last time you per formed in the Palladium, and in the meantime, can you share what you hope the audience will experience when you come out to Carmel this November?
BJ: The thing that I love about live per formances is that it’s a feeling that I can’t replicate. The music in that moment and the communication between myself, the band and the audience… we’re all sharing this experience, and it’s a very powerful thing. It can be transcendent if we’re doing things right. And that’s what we’re going to go for!
Redefining Dental Excellence Excellence
Carmel Christkindlmarkt Is a
Hub for ImmersionCultural
Writer // Janelle Morrison • Photography // Courtesy of Carmel Christkindlmarkt
The Carmel Christkindlmarkt has become more than just an award-winning seasonal attraction—it’s a vibrant hub for cultural immersion and an inclusive venue for both visitors and residents. Rooted in the rich traditions of Germany’s holiday markets, the Christkindlmarkt offers an authentic experience that goes beyond festive entertainment, introducing visitors to German heritage and customs in a meaningful way.
Carmel Christkindlmarkt CEO/ President Maria Adele Rosenfeld shared, “Last year, for the first time, we were voted the 2023 Best Local Tourist/Seasonal Attraction by the community [Indy’s Best Things 2023 Indy Star competition]. We were up against venues [such] as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis Zoo and other popular attractions. We were nominated again this year, which is really incredible.”
Additionally, Carmel Christkindlmarkt has been featured in several local, regional, national and international publications, including National Geographic, since its inception in 2017.
A CELEBRATION OF GERMAN CULTURE
At the heart of the Carmel Christkindlmarkt is the goal of offering a deeper understanding of German culture. With its carefully curated selection of vendors, food and entertainment, the market replicates the classic charm of a traditional German holiday market, bringing together artisans, woodworkers and vendors who embody the spirit of German craftsmanship. Visitors can enjoy a taste of German culinary delights, such as bratwurst, pretzels and mulled wine while browsing through an array of handmade gifts and holiday decorations.
The connection to Germany is strengthened by Carmel’s sister-city
relationship with Seiffen, a small town located in the heart of the Ore Mountains in Saxony near the Czech border. Often referred to as “Spielzeugstadt” or “toy town” in Germany, Seiffen is known for its centuries-old woodworking traditions. This partnership not only enriches the market experience but also creates opportunities for knowledge exchange. Seiffen’s famous wooden ornaments, nutcrackers and other traditional crafts are featured at the Christkindlmarkt, allowing visitors to appreciate ancient woodworking practices that have been passed down through generations.
“Sandy Richardson [VP of cultural programs and event manager] and I attended Seiffen’s 700th Anniversary as a town in July, and we were honored to be in the parade representing Carmel… there’s a lot of future potential with this relationship, and it’s very exciting! There is a woodworking school that trains the next generation of artisans in Seiffen, and they’re including in their curriculum to have students win an opportunity through a competition to come and present their skills at the workshop at the Christkindlmarkt in Carmel, and we will have our first students from Seiffen coming this winter. As our sister city Seiffen becomes a part of Carmel’s history, we, in turn, are becoming a chapter in Seiffen’s 700-year plus story.”
EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Beyond the festive atmosphere, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt is dedicated to education. One of the market’s standout features is its commitment to providing scholarship opportunities for students interested in German language and culture. These scholarships help foster
a deeper appreciation for German heritage and encourage cultural exchange between Carmel and Seiffen.
The market also offers hands-on educational experiences, from demonstrations of traditional German crafts to interactive exhibits that allow visitors to learn about the history and significance of the Christkindlmarkt tradition. Through these efforts, the market not only entertains but also informs, making it a valuable cultural resource for the community.
The Carmel Christkindlmarkt partnered with the Indiana German Heritage Society and Indiana Historical Society in 2019 to bring its guests the Kulturecke— a fabulous space to explore Indiana’s rich German-American history. German immigrants contributed in many ways to the state: business, education, architecture and even Christmas traditions.
The Kinderecke (“Kids Corner”) is a special space for families to make crafts and memories together during all Market hours. In German households, it’s not uncommon to have a dedicated corner in the kitchen or family room for kids to create and do crafts.
Join us in this special kid-friendly hut to make all sorts of fun holiday-themed or German-inspired creations. The Carmel Christkindlmarkt staff and volunteers are excited to help you with your masterpieces.
A WELCOMING, INCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE
While rooted in German tradition, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt is designed to be an inclusive space for people of all backgrounds. The festive atmosphere, complete with ice skating, live music and a wide range of holiday offerings, invites everyone to participate in the seasonal celebrations. Whether it’s families enjoying a winter outing, individuals looking to explore new cultures, or residents and tourists alike gathering to experience the magic of the holidays, the Christkindlmarkt welcomes all.
“When the Carmel Christkindlmart made the choice to be a 501C3 [nonprofit] and really hyper-focus on being an authentic market and to represent another culture in a way that honors that [German] culture, that authentic
expression of that [culture] brings permission and unity for other cultures to come in appreciation of that one being represented well,” Rosenfeld stated. “This expression of the melting pot in the United States is right here in the heart of Indiana, walking around this market together, in unity, whether they celebrate Christmas or not.”
A GROWING TRADITION
As the Carmel Christkindlmarkt continues to grow in popularity, its role as a cultural and educational hub deepens. The market has become a symbol of Carmel’s commitment to fostering global connections, celebrating diversity and providing opportunities for learning. Its partnership with Seiffen exemplifies the benefits of cross-cultural relationships, while its educational initiatives ensure that visitors leave with not only memories but also a greater appreciation for the traditions that shape this holiday experience.
In this way, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt stands out as more than just a seasonal attraction—it is a celebration of heritage, a venue for cultural exchange and a place where the spirit of community and learning thrives during the most wonderful time of the year.
Brand new to the Carmel Christkindlmarkt this year is the inaugural Wundernacht, which will take place on November 20 from 6 to 9 p.m., the Wednesday before the market opens. Attendees will get a first look at ALL of the merchandise available in the market’s gift huts. Wundernacht means “night of miracles”—and this won’t only be a night of fun. It’s also a fundraiser to support future cultural exchange between America and Germany, making it a festive evening you can feel good about. Purchase your tickets online at carmelchristkindlmarkt.com.
Hannah Kiefer, VP of Communications, shared the introduction of Feuerzangenbowle to the Carme Christkindlmarkt.
“For (we believe) the first time at a Christkindlmarkt outside of Germany, we’re thrilled in 2024 to offer an authentic German drink: Feuerzangenbowle,” Kiefer said. “This flaming drink involves lighting a rum-soaked sugar cone on fire, then allowing the molten sugar to drip into the warm Glühwein below, creating an extra sweet, boozy treat. This delicacy will be prepared using special kettles and equipment custom-made in Austria for our market.”

Zionsville Explores Launching DORA District to Boost Local Economy
At the time of publishing, Zionsville town leaders are considering the creation of a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) following the success seen in neighboring communities with similar districts. A DORA would allow residents and visitors to enjoy alcoholic beverages in specified outdoor areas, enhancing social and economic activity in Zionsville’s historic downtown.
Mbers have expressed interest in exploring how such a district could benefit local businesses and boost tourism while maintaining the town’s charm and community standards. As discussions progress, town leaders are looking to neighboring successes as a model for potential implementation.
AN ECONOMIC AND TOURISM GENERATOR
“A DORA district in downtown Zionsville is an economic development tool that benefits the restaurants and vendors selling their products and [a DORA district] creates more of an ‘open’ and pedestrian-friendly environment,” Stehr stated.
“People out shopping can walk into a boutique while sipping their favorite wine or [adult] beverage. I think it will have a positive economic development impact on our downtown businesses.”
Plunkett added, “If you look to the COVID, years when we blocked off Main Street and had people gather regularly on Thursdays to enjoy dinner from their favorite restaurants and shopping at their favorite stores, it was a good opportunity to bring people to the area that might not have otherwise been in the village. I think having a DORA district could do the same thing on a regular basis.”
The mayor explained that there would be a designated area with signage marking the [DORA] district so that people
wouldn’t walk beyond that area into the neighborhoods or Lions Park.
“There have been about a dozen DORA districts instituted in other communities since the legislature allowed them for the first time last year,” Stehr shared. “There have been virtually no problems associated with these districts… only positive outcomes. This is not an ordinance that impacts the special events that currently take place in Zionsville. A DORA district simply outlines an area that allows folks to move from one establishment to another with a [adult] beverage and will drive commerce and folks to the village outside of our special events.”
Should the town council pass [the ordinance] at the second reading [October 7], Plunkett said the effective date would not be immediately implemented.
“The effective date would likely be pushed back a little bit,” Plunkett explained. “We want to make sure that we have the appropriate signage in place and anything else that would come along with that.”
A BENEFIT TO CHAMBER MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS
Zionsville Chamber of Commerce
Executive Director Mike Hanlon added his endorsement and spoke about the benefits the proposed DORA district will have on both chamber members and non-members located in the heart of downtown Zionsville.
“We’ve been working closely with the town on this initiative for several months now,” Hanlon said. “The chamber is very supportive of this initiative, and we’re excited to [see] this [ordinance] move forward because we see it as promoting economic development and improving the overall vibrancy and quality of enjoyment in our downtown area.”
Hanlon added, “The communities that have already implemented a DORA district have seen positive results in terms of an increase of food and beverage tax revenue and [an] increase in spending from their retailers benefiting members and non-members alike. We see it as a boost in making Zionsville more attractive and competitive with the surrounding areas. Implementing a DORA district will elevate the vitality of the community that we need in order to compete.”

In May 2021, Zionsville Monthly featured Zionsville residents and Carpenter Nature Preserve namesakes Jim and Nancy Carpenter on the cover. With a commitment to preserving the land for future generations, the Carpenters purchased the former Wolf Run Golf Course property in 2021. As interim owners, they meticulously cared for the land, maintaining old golf cart trails, installing bluebird boxes and experimenting with pollinator gardens. During this period, the Carpenters collaborated with the parks and recreation department, landscape architects and ecological consultants to develop the Carpenter Nature Preserve Master Plan. They also sought valuable community input.
The master plan envisions the preserve as a public sanctuary, enhancing wetlands, woodlands and prairies while incorporating boardwalks, a nature-inspired playground and overlooks of Eagle Creek. It also designates Carpenter Nature Preserve as the future home of the Zionsville Nature Center.
We sat down with Nancy Carpenter and Zionsville Parks Foundation Admin-
istrative Coordinator Jan Hornaday to learn more about the current status of the preserve and the foundation’s current and upcoming fundraisers.
ZIONSVILLE PARKS FOUNDATION
In November 2021, the Carpenters announced the formation of a nonprofit, Zionsville Parks Foundation, which champions the preservation of and access to parks and green spaces in Zionsville.
The foundation has been collaborating with parks and rec on several purpose-driven initiatives for the nature preserve in preparation for its grand opening in 2026.
“We have helped with many projects that are in the pipeline,” Carpenter shared. “We have been very fortunate to have received great community support, and once people come into the park [in 2026], the enthusiasm will only grow.”
Hornaday added, “It’s exciting because the parks department has released the conceptual drawings [detailing the first phase] of the 215-acre nature preserve, so now there’s a vision to see, and we’ve displayed these graphics at the farmers market and Fall Festival. We also sent out a newsletter that highlighted some of those as well. We are having conversations with folks about naming rights opportunities and funding different things [at the preserve]. We are really proud of the success that we’ve already had.”
Carpenter and Hornaday shared that the foundation is fundraising for a nature playground featuring boulders, water and sand elements at the nature preserve. The foundation is committed to raising $75,000 for this playscape that will engage kids and families in the future.
“We want to restore the grasslands and forests, and there are opportunities for naming rights in certain areas,” Carpenter stated. “We have a prairie pavilion, which will be a focal point where the nature playground will be located, and we’re hoping to find a donor that will be excited about funding this at the nature preserve.”
The Zionsville Parks Foundation is offering the opportunity to honor loved ones with memorial benches at Carpenter Nature Preserve. These benches not only provide a peaceful spot for visitors to rest and enjoy nature but also serve as a lasting tribute, featuring a personalized memorial plaque in remembrance of your loved one.
There are limited opportunities for memorial benches at Carpenter Nature Preserve, which are available for $2,000 a bench. Please contact info@zparksfoundation.org or 317-769-1025 for more information about memorial bench donations.
SAVE THE DATE!
The Zionsville Parks Foundation will host its first fundraising event, Parks & Pastries, on October 25 at 8 a.m. at Zions-
Foundation, as the keynote speaker.
“This event is our first major fundraiser,” Carpenter said. “It is a breakfast event, and we will be sharing what our foundation is doing. There are opportunities to buy tables, and there are sponsorship opportunities. It will be a lot of fun and a wonderful opportunity for the community to learn more about what the foundation is doing.”

residents, supporting local businesses and ensuring sustainable growth. By collaborating across both branches of local government, they are focused on implementing solutions that will benefit Zionsville’s property owners and business community while securing the town’s long-term prosperity.
2025 BUDGET PROPOSAL UNVEILED
Zionsville’s 2025 budget proposal stands as a testament to proactive governance
marks the town’s inaugural use of a robust five-year financial planning strategy aimed at steering priorities not only for the next year but also for the years ahead.
“One of the things that has been a good addition here is budgeting with a five-year [spending and revenue] plan in
in all manner of things here in our town government.”
Plunkett added, “The budget is something to celebrate. I think we’re in a spot where, broadly, the budget seems to be viewed positively. We had been operating in the dark for four years, and the [budget]
process wasn’t an enjoyable experience. What has been really nice about working with Mayor Stehr and his administration over the last few months is the frequent communication. We’ve communicated regularly about what the priorities should be, and I think what you’ll see in this budget what will ultimately be approved is a lot of give and take… a lot of negotiation. Everybody didn’t get everything they wanted, but the town ultimately wins because it is a solid budget that has input from all around.”
PRIORITIZING PUBLIC SAFETY AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Central to the 2025 budget is a strategic allocation towards enhancing public safety and infrastructure. The proposed plan includes provisions for adding an additional police officer and hiring four new firefighters, bolstering emergency response capabilities.
Additionally, significant investments are earmarked for expanding the town’s pathway network, including vital connections along Oak Street and Route 421, as well as a transformative trail linking Appaloosa Crossing to Hamilton County via 300 South. Renovation plans for Lincoln Park and the realignment of Zionsville Road underscore the town’s commitment to enhancing its quality of place.
Plunkett stated, “The council and administration are working together on the ordinance rewrites and cleanups that are important as some [ordinances] still reference positions that existed before the town’s reorganization and installation of a mayor, and to streamline government, this is certainly a valid and necessary task to do.”
Stehr explained the importance of merit boards being selected by the local government versus state-imposed [merit] boards.
“The state of Indiana is mandating that we have merit boards, and if we don’t do our own by the end of the year, they [state] will impose theirs on us,” Stehr said. “I think in situations like that, it’s always better to be in control to make sure it fits the local needs and desires, so that’s one of the reasons why we’re moving forward on that. Plus, it’s just the right thing to do for our public safety. I say it all the time,
The most important thing that we do is public safety.’ Everything else flows from there. We need to make sure that we’re operating in the best possible way that we can for our fire and police departments.
EMPLOYEE WELFARE AND FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
Recognizing the invaluable contributions of its workforce, Zionsville intends to implement a minimum 4% salary increase across municipal employees, ensuring parity among public safety personnel. Simultaneously, the proposed municipal tax rate is set to decrease from .5229 to .4805, reinforcing Zionsville’s reputation for maintaining one of the lowest tax rates among communities in the donut counties.
STRATEGIC ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES
The budget blueprint also outlines a proactive approach to economic development, emphasizing continued collaboration with the Boone Economic Development Corporation and the Indy Chamber. An upcoming asset audit aims to streamline future planning efforts, aligning fiscal strategies with the town’s long-term growth objectives.
FUTURE PROSPECTS AND PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT
‘The most important thing that we do is public safety.’ Everything else flows from there. We need to make sure that we’re operating in the best possible way that we can for our fire and police departments.”
Plunkett added, “Regarding the safety board, it’s going to be nice to get back to having regular interactions with the fire department about the positive things that are taking place in the community, just like we do with the Board of Police Commissioners now.”
The mayor took this opportunity to announce the return of Pancake Day on October 5 after a hiatus.
“I think people here want to support our public safety agencies, and Pancake Day gives the public an opportunity to do that,” Stehr said. “It’s great interaction between the fire service and the community, and it will raise a few dollars that will be put to good use by ZFD. It’s a really important community event, and I’m really excited that we’re able to bring it back.”
Looking ahead, Zionsville anticipates the results of a comprehensive planning process examining land use across its expansive 67-square-mile jurisdiction, scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.
Stehr and Plunkett spoke about their joint efforts to repair Zionsville’s bond rating.
Plunkett emphasized, “It is important for the residents of our town to know, and for the government agencies and folks that impact our bond rating to see us working together.”
The mayor concluded, “Anytime we bond for any project, the higher the bond rating, the better the interest rate. A half a point to three-quarters of a point makes a huge difference over the long term of how many thousands of dollars we have to pay back. So, reclaiming our AA+ bond rating continues to be a focus, and I think we’re well on our way. I think the budget process has been a big part of that, and we hope to continue down that path to get that rating back because Zionsville deserves it, and we need to get it back to support our own economic health going forward.”

DRIVEN BY A PASSION FOR SPEED AND TECHNOLOGY
Max Miller, founder of SIMRGEN, brings a wealth of experience, creativity and technical expertise to his racing simulator company. With a deep passion for motorsports and a background in innovative technology, Miller has combined his skills to create an immersive racing experience unlike any other. His leadership has driven SIMRGEN to become a standout company in the industry, offering state-of-the-art simulators that capture
the precision and excitement of real-life racing. Through Miller’s vision, SIMRGEN continues to push the boundaries of virtual racing, delivering high-quality experiences for enthusiasts of all skill levels.
Miller’s journey began at age five with a slot car gifted by his father, igniting his lifelong passion for cars, racing and motorsports. Growing up around his father’s Land Rover, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz commercial dealerships, Miller developed both an entrepreneurial spirit and a strong understanding of the automotive industry. This early exposure laid the foundation for his future ventures, blending his love for racing with sharp business acumen.
“At the age of 22, I created the first 30,000-square-foot track and club for radio-controlled gas/nitro-powered cars,” Miller shared. “I sold and repaired radio-controlled cars and organized races.”
After traveling to 16 countries and 50 major cities worldwide and living in prestigious locations across Europe, the Middle East and North America, Max Miller gained valuable experience working for both Fortune 150 companies and a multibillion-dollar private corporation. Having earned an MBA in innovation and entrepreneurship, Miller has had three successful startups and is excited about the launch of his latest endeavor: SIMRGEN.
“I came to the U.S. and worked for a corporation for 12 years before I decided to leave the corporate world and start my own business, despite all of the ‘nos’ that I got from a lot of people, financial institutions and so on. I wanted to do something that I love, and I am glad that I’ve opened this.”
SPECIALIZED CUSTOM BUILDS AND EXPERIENCES
SIMRGEN’s Carmel headquarters and showroom are a testament to Max Miller’s ingenuity and technical expertise. Featuring a tribute to racing, with a special nod to the Indianapolis 500, the space showcases the evolution of motorsports. Through the cutting-edge simulators on-site, guests and members can experience the immersive thrill and realism of high-speed racing on the world’s most extraordinary racetracks in a myriad of popular marques.
The pièce de résistance in Miller’s showroom boasts a 57-inch central monitor flanked by two 32-inch side monitors and a 27-inch display on top, providing a nearly 180-degree view. This simulator features Ferrari parts: seat, chassis, headset, steering wheel, etc., creating a cohesive and authentic feel. With iRacing software, one of the best simulation platforms available, combined with realistic pedals and a hand rig for rally racing, the entire system offers a uniquely immersive experience that closely mirrors the sensation of driving a real car.
“It is as close as it gets to the way [a race car] drives and feels,” Miller said. “That’s what makes it unique. You can change the [track] elements with this software. The [features] tracks are measured by laser, so the simulated [tracks] are accurate enough that professional drivers practice on these simulators because they are very accurate. The ‘cars’ are very close to reality in the way they drive and sound. The intensity of the feedback, particularly on the steering wheel, can also be adjusted.”
Miller explained that all of his simulators are custom-built, differentiating his [simulators] from the “cookie-cutter” models out in the market.
“One of the distinguishing factors from what I offer is the custom-build aspect,” Miller stated. “I sit with the client and listen so that I can understand their purpose, budget, preferences and requirements. Then I build the specifica-
tions of their simulator right in front of them, virtually. Every component of their simulator can be customized.”
Once the specs are finalized, and barring all parts are in stock and available, Miller shared that his typical lead time runs about one week or two. He builds each simulator on-site himself, then delivers and installs the simulator to the client’s home or place of business.
AN EXCLUSIVE EVENT VENUE
The venue is also ideal for hosting events and parties, offering concessions like pizza, popcorn, beverages, etc. Guests can rent the facility, and once the second floor is
complete, it will feature a lounge and VIP area with even more simulators. Whether you’re a casual racer, professional driver or part of an eSports team, the space provides an exceptional training environment.
Based on your preferences and height, Miller customizes the simulators for his members, so the next time you visit, everything will be perfectly set up and ready to go.
“SIMRGEN aims to democratize car racing simulators,” Miller expressed. “I want to make them accessible to anyone passionate about racing by offering flexible options to rent, buy or subscribe to a service where they can use the rigs as long as they like, returning them when they no longer need them. This space [showroom] allows the opportunity for corporate and specialty events, team-building exercises and so on.”
Miller added, “I have such respect and love for this area and for the city of Carmel. We have world-class amenities and education, restaurants, economic development and all the things that people want and care about, especially when raising a
family. That is why I wanted to open and grow my business in Carmel.”
