hat many people may not realize is that the downstairs Tap Room hosts adults over 21 and offers 100 different varieties of whiskey, one of the largest in the area. The tavern boasts a massive, hand-crafted bar made in the 1800s that was brought in from Cleveland, Ohio. The downstairs is handicapped accessible with an on-premises elevator. Tap Room guests may order from the menu that includes a daily special created by Chef Martin Gorham and his staff. A favorite is the Thursday special—the buttermilk-soaked, fried boneless chicken breasts with mashed potatoes, home style gravy and sautéed garlic green beans and yeast roll. Another popular signature dish that Gorham has created is the Chili Lime Brisket Crepes dish. It includes his braised, shredded brisket rubbed in a special blend of spices and tossed in a chili lime sauce folded into three crepes and topped with melted cheese, corn relish, and cilantro. “My staff and I take pride in the fact that we share ideas and our creations,” Gorham said. “We also are proud to use local purveyors whenever possible. For instance, we bring in the freshest and best meats and sausages from Saint Adrian Meats and Sausage, which are raised and produced in Boone County. We want our guests to have an enjoyable meal that is priced just right while supporting our local farms and growers.” Patrons will enjoy a variety of ten craft beers on tap featuring a rotation of Indiana breweries. Tap Room

manager David Hiner delights guests with special attention to the presentation of the drink that he serves. “The presentation is as important as the actual drink,” Hiner said. “For me, it is important to get to know my customers’ preferences and personalities and build their cocktails from that.

It was important for her to establish her clinic in the community where she lives. In addition to helping people get back on the track to good health, Booth is also a dedicated volunteer and serves as a Center Advisory Board Member for the Pike YMCA. “As a physical therapist, I want to do more than help people with their back, neck, knee (etc.) pain, I want to help them to discover their ultimate goals in regards to their health and what will motivate them to get back to living their lives pain and symptom free,” Booth emphasized. better, moving more, and prioritizing their health. She creates a long-term plan so that they can continue their good habits and exercise routine after they have completed their rehabilitation therapy. The Team Rehab Northwest Indy clinic boasts a welcoming and energizing environment. Booth took great care in incorporating her branding and color scheme and creating a motivating atmosphere as opposed to a sterile one. She created treatment areas that can be sectioned off with curtains during treatments. A private treatment room is available for patients who require total privacy. She created the exercise stations area in a very open concept so that patients could exercise in front of their peers. The idea is that this social aspect of their therapy will allow them to see that they are not alone on their road to recovery. They become inspired and even more motivated when they see another patient physically achieving his or her goals. One of the therapies that Booth offers is functional dry needling; sometimes called trigger-point dry needling. This manual therapy technique uses a thin needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate trigger points in muscular and connective tissue. Recent medical research shows that dry needling can cause rapid reductions in pain and improvements in a range of motion. The researchers studied 17 patients. All patients’ neck pain began within seven days of the start of the study. Half of the patients received trigger point dry needling treatment, and the other half received no treatment. The patients who received the dry needling had better results. Immediately after the treatment, their pain decreased by 33 percent. One week after the treatment, their pain was 66 percent less. Also, those patients treated with dry needling were better able to bend their heads forward, backward, and toward the painful side of their necks. Therapists at Team Rehab are certified in a specialized form of therapy called Astym® (A-stim) treatment sets the standard for soft tissue therapy. It regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.), and removes unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions. Astym® treatment has helped countless patients by restoring movement, getting rid of pain, and giving

patients’ lives back. Booth said many people suffering from pain do not know that they do not have to wait for a referral. The Indiana Direct Access Law passed in in 2013 permits patients to be evaluated and treated by a physical therapist for 24 calendar days without a referral from a physician or other provider. After 24 days, the PT must obtain a referral from another, authorized

provider to continue treatment. Henri Najem wouldn’t call his new Whitestown restaurant Flamme Burger a “burger joint.” This seasoned restaurateur argues that such a label glosses over the depth of menu offerings and quality of his food. What Najem wants to create is a dining experience where patrons can enjoy fresh fares in a casual, welcoming atmosphere.

he Whitestown restaurant, which opened in December, is Flamme Burger’s second location. Flamme Burger is a “fresh casual” eatery that uses fresh ingredients, homemade recipes, and a wood-burning grill to create a full host of menu items. Najem

worked tirelessly for two years to perfect his recipes and dishes. Flamme burgers are a unique blend of brisket, short ribs, and sirloins. Burgers and other menu items are cooked on a special open flame, wood-burning grill that Najem created. All sandwiches are paired with Harlan Bakeries’ brioches.

For the last 25 years, Najem has worked in the restaurant industry. Najem and his wife, Shelley, owned the iconic Geist restaurant Bella Vita for 17 years. In 2015, the couple opened the first Flamme Burger in Fishers. Restaurant ownership runs in Najem’s blood. His parents owned bars and restaurants in downtown Indianapolis. His first restaurant experience began at age12 while working in his uncle’s west side Indianapolis restaurant. Najem’s frequent trips to Zionsville soccer fields with his daughter’s team alerted him to the growth in Boone County. “I noticed the growth and devel-

opment in the area,” says Najem. “I saw a lot of opportunity here.” Tanya Sumner, Whitestown’s director of public relations, was instrumental in Najem’s feeling welcomed into the Boone County community. “We were excited about a locally owned place coming into Whitestown,” Sumner asserts. “His product was different and exciting.” Najem feels a strong commitment to giving back to the community and contributing to local charities. Before Flamme Burger opened in Whitestown, Sumner says Najem contacted her about partnering with a local charity. Sumner connected Najem to the Caring Center

The Caring Center meets the needs of many single mothers and their children within Boone County. This was important for Najem whose own single mother raised him and his five siblings after his father died in a car accident when he was eight years old. Flamme Burger donated a $1,000 check to the Caring Center at its ribbon cutting ceremony. Once a month, Najem will donate 10 percent of the restaurant’s profits to the Caring Center. The modern digital age of celebrating Valentine’s Day leaves behind the traditional handmade cards as was the English practice since the 19th century. In the latter half of the 20th century, heartshaped boxes of chocolates and roses became a safe standard of showing one’s affection for another person. The diamond industry capitalized on the trend of heartshaped jewelry that was popular in the 1980s. At the turn of the millennium, the internet has made digital e-cards and gift cards popular replacements of the more traditional gifts of yesteryears. How do you celebrate your Valentine’s Day?

We asked a few familiar members of our communities to reveal some of their most treasured or comical memories of Valentine’s Days past. Here are their responses to our fun-spirited survey!

Q Funniest Valentine Day memory? A My wife and I went out to eat at a very small new restaurant. The restaurant didn’t have a liquor license so you had a bring your own bottle of wine. As we were seated and preparing for a nice romantic evening, we realized we were next to a table that was reserved for a large group. About 10 minutes later, a group of 10 couples, decked out in their full biker leathers and looking very much the part of stereotypical bikers, sat at the table next to us. We weren’t quite sure we picked the right restaurant. We soon realized that they were there for the same reason as us and by the end of the meal we were sharing wine, stories, and laughs. The Zionsville Chamber of Commerce announced last November that Tracy Phillips, a leader of nonprofit and volunteer organizations for more than 25 years, would become executive director at the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce in early 2017. Phillips is leaving her position as the executive director of the Zionsville Education Foundation (ZEF) and looks forward to the opportunity to serve her community on an even larger scale.

ptimistic about her new role and the direction in which the chamber is moving, Phillips hopes to “fill the incredibly large shoes” left by her predecessor, Julie Johns-Cole. Phillips is looking forward to using her existing relationships that she built over the years with ZEF while establishing new ones with the business community and the town’s economic development leaders. As the executive director of ZEF, Phillips achieved concrete goals such as increasing revenue by 11 percent in three years, reinventing the spring fundraiser for the changing demographics, and adding strategic social media platforms. Before her departure, she was instrumental in the planning and execution of ZEF’s 20th Anniversary celebration. During that anniversary year, foundation giving reached $1 million.

“I grew up just a few miles from downtown Zionsville and spent a lot of time going to the shops and restaurants here,” Phillips said. “I am looking forward to working with the chamber’s board of directors, its committees, and all of our Zionsville businesses. While I see economic development as a top priority, business retention is equally as important. I plan on doing a lot of listening over the next several months and observing what areas need attention and what is working effectively for the community as a whole.” Phillips emphasized that she is available to discuss the issues and ideas with local business owners, whether they are large companies or small business owners. She is also relying on the residents’ feedback with regards to the community events that are produced by the chamber. Phillips’s prior experience as the public relations and special events manager with

the Paseo del Rio Association, a chamber of commerce in San Antonio, Texas, gives her the ability to understand the impact that events have in bringing visitors and prospective customers to area businesses. She also understands the importance of working with the affected businesses so that the event benefits all concerned. “It is important for me to work to balance the town’s economic growth while preserving the foundation that it was built on and the unique character that Zionsville is known for,” Phillips expressed. “I am fully committed to doing

what is best for my community and am excited for this opportunity to serve my community in this new chapter of my professional life. For me, a large part of my career is focused on servant leadership and on giving back.” Phillips acknowledged the growing population and the fact that more young professionals and young families are moving to Zionsville. She is excited for the opportunity to engage the YPs and expand the chamber’s virtual footprint through its growing social media presence. “In today’s world, Gen X and Y, Millennials and Gen Z get their information and share their thoughts with bidirectional social media,” Phillips observed. “It is a whole new playing field and in utilizing my experience and continuing education in this specialty, I expect to expand the chamber’s profile.” Tom Casalini, Zionsville Chamber of Commerce board member and president of Casalini Photography, expressed optimism about Phillips’s new position and Zionsville in this new year. “I believe that Tracy will do a wonderful job as the executive director,” Casalini said. “She possesses a level of professionalism and energy that is necessary for that role. In my 44 years of experience, what is transpiring now in downtown Zionsville is the closest that the town has been to the energy of the 1970s through the early 80s. The chamber is actively engaging with businesses that are interested in locating here and is advocating for the businesses, such as the ones affiliated with zWorks, who are growing here. These businesses have chosen to stay and expand here in Zionsville.”

Bryan Traylor, a Zionsville resident and past-president of the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, offered a brief review of the Chamber’s progress over the years since he joined and what he feels Phillips will bring to the table. During Traylor’s first term as president, the chamber went from having no employees (the part-timers had resigned) to the hiring of a full-time executive director, Julie Johns-Cole. “I think that Tracy is a phenomenal hire,” Traylor stated. “Tracy being a resident and her experience with ZEF makes her a perfect fit. If you follow her on Facebook, you can see how much she loves Zionsville and how much the businesses and schools mean to her. She is not going to do anything that would put the chamber or the community in any bad light or in jeopardy in any way. She has the heart for this job.” Traylor concluded, “Admittedly, I was extremely nervous when Julie chose to move on. I knew that at some point she would move on to something else and that we were lucky to have Julie with us for as long as we did. Naturally, I was really concerned about who would replace her. Those are extremely big shoes to fill. When the board announced Tracy as the new director, I let out a big sigh of relief. Head addressed some of the changes in the health care industry and how iSALUS’s software is designed to solve some of the current challenges. One of the pieces of the solution is telemedicine. Telemedicine in its most basic definition is “the remote diagnosis and treatment of patients by means of telecommunications technology.” “Our telemedicine software is going to allow providers and patients to contact and visit one another without being in the same physical location,” Head explained. “It looks and works a lot like FaceTime but it’s completely secured and built directly into our software. We worked our way through on the existing devices on the market and identified the pros and cons with all the various technologies. “If you look at Apple and Facetime, it works because it’s easy. We want our software to be user-friendly, and easy for both the provider and the patient without extensive training for either end-user. In the United States, approximately 90 percent of the adult popula-

tion has smart phones and replace them every couple of years so they’re keeping the technology base up-to-date, which eliminates the worry about having to replace obsolete technology or antiquated equipment,” he says. “With our software, we are communicating point-to-point, and we have developed our technology so that it cannot be intercepted. Being cloud-based and a small company, we can build and create a lot of cool technology. We had to make a highly configurable piece of software with encryption codes that met all the required regulations. We’re also not storing the data anywhere. So it’s not being recorded or saved anywhere, making the shared information highly secure.” Dietzen emphasized that colleagues enjoy interacting with one another, particularly in the health care industry, and especially with colleagues from all over the world. Nelson Chow, CEO of LIH Healthcare and an associate of Dietzen’s, recently travelled from China to Indianapolis to consult with Dietzen and his colleagues on matters such as the practice and development of telemedicine. Chow also took a tour of iSALUS and offered his thoughts on the importance to the world of this developing technology. “The great thing about what Nelson and LIH are doing [is] they are instituting a whole new type of medicine to China,”

Dietzen stated. “To be pioneers in this is exciting, and so he came here so that I could introduce him to some additional resources here in the U.S. and specifically here in Indianapolis.” He adds, “It’s about relationships and finding people that you want to work with and feel that have the right niche for what we, providers and developers, are doing.” Chow, a former electrical engineer who specialized in semiconductors and computer chips, developed LIH as a direct response to an arduous journey of trying to find proper care and therapy for his 9-year-old daughter, Olivia, who was born in China with Down Syndrome. Immediately following her birth in 2007, Chow realized that even just five minutes after her birth, the despair and hopelessness displayed by the nurses represented the culture in China that Chow realized had to change. Children with disabilities in China are cast away and hidden from society. They do not typically receive therapy or treatments that would otherwise improve the quality of their lives. Chow and his family came back to the U.S. where his previous company was headquartered and began to educate themselves on their daughter’s needs and what therapies were available to her. Fast forward to the present day. Chow’s company, LIH, has expanded into an influential organization that works

The Cobblestone Grill is getting a complete “make-over” for the new year and its next chapter since Kent and Liz Esra opened it in 2000.

enovations began in late January after extensive planning and design work. The restaurant will be closed throughout this remodeling and reopen under its new name and logo, Cobblestone, in early March. “After 16 years, we decided it was time to refresh the restaurant with a new look,” says Kent Esra. “We will reconfigure the dining and bar areas, add new colors and lighting and a more contemporary ambience that will update the restaurant throughout.” They will open the dining areas in the entire restaurant by eliminating some walls. The floors, furniture, décor, and lighting will be updated to reflect the new ambience that the Esras want to share with patrons and future guests.

“We felt changing the name to simply ‘Cobblestone’ better reflects who we are today,” says Liz Esra. “This is an exciting time for us, and we can’t wait to introduce the new Cobblestone to our many customers who have supported us for the past 16 years.” The bar area will be expanded and the dining area changed to allow better seating with new tables and chairs. The Esras emphasize that the bar area will provide additional space for customers to meet and enjoy the 28 beers on tap, an exquisite wine list, and more than 70 bourbon whiskeys. Cobblestone will also introduce new menu items but keep many of the more popular offerings. The appetizer menu will be expanded and Chef Omar Guzman is creating new and delicious dishes

to unveil at the restaurant’s reopening when the Esras plan to host “a really big party.” Lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch will continue to be served after the construction is completed. The Esras emphasize that the design efforts were a collaboration of ideas and talent from their fellow business owners and close friends, Tom Casalini and Lesley Hunt. The team created the new look and atmosphere for the interior updates throughout the restaurant and bar areas. “We could not have done any of this without their help,” Kent Esra says. “We would not have even known where to begin, and we cannot simply say ‘thank you’ enough for what these two have done for us.”

In September of 2007, The Humane Society for Boone County (HSforBC) was organized by Boone County citizens to continue the task of animal rescue for homeless domestic animals. The HSforBC’s primary mission is the rescue of homeless and endangered domestic animals and advocating for public education of humane animal care and animal regulations.

ntil recently, the HSforBC did not have a physical shelter. Through the perseverance of its board members and community partners, that goal was achieved shortly after the first of the year. The board consulted with its partners at the Community Foundation of Boone County, which has held and managed a special fund designated for an animal shelter for several years. HSforBC was not able to obtain those funds until it had met all of the required criteria. a physical shelter to serve the animals of Boone County. The shelter will be open after a period of remodeling is completed. Stay tuned for an announcement on the shelter’s grand opening. The official Humane Society of Boone County Animal Shelter will be located in Whitestown. It formerly housed the Zionsville Country Vet Clinic. It boasts 7,000 square feet with room to expand dog kennels and other rooms for catteries. The property previously donated to the HSforBC will be considered for multiple uses such as a potential future quarantine facility and the remaining land could be considered for a dog park. Decisions on the future uses will be revisited and decided at a later time. The

immediate focus is to get established in the new facility as soon as possible. Michael Hancock, the HSforBC board president, discussed the benefits that having a physical location will afford the board and volunteer staff. “With our new location, we will be able to have more volunteers assist us with administering things that will need to done at the shelter,” Hancock says. “I originally became involved as a volunteer in 2008 and was invited to the board in 2009. I helped with the organizing of the social media and IT development. Ever since we made the announcement that we are getting a physical shelter, we have had an outpouring of people who have not volunteered before asking about how they can get involved.” Susan Austin, director of animal welfare, says that it was an arduous road to get where they are today. “It has been a hard eight years…. It has been a real labor of love, and there were times that we couldn’t help some of the animals, which broke our hearts, but we kept on

with the end goal always on our minds: to get the shelter.” She says the board members are very grateful to Boone County veterinarians who have provided vaccinations, spay and neutering services at no charge. There have also been many donors and volunteers. “Our list of people and organizations to thank is endless,” she says. “We would like to mention the Zionsville Country Kennel, the sponsor of this year’s Fur Ball, our annual fundraiser. They have been instrumental in assisting us with kenneling the dogs for free until we could find foster homes.” She says that they have seen an increasing number ofabandoned, neglected, and abused pets due to economic hardships, but they have tried to assist families with dog or cat food from their pet pantry. “The goal is to keep the animals in their original homes, if possible, rather than changing homes and environments,” she says.

Guy Davis, one of HSforBC’s founding board members and current director of membership, spoke about what the news of the facility means to the original members who have waited a long time for this day. “In 2007, I attended a meeting and discovered that there was no rescue facility for animals in our county,” Davis says. “The group decided to hold a second meeting where members of the community were selected to become volunteers who eventually became board members.

We filed for our 501(c) (3) and immediately attempted to do rescues. With the help of neighboring communities, we got valuable insights on how to rescue and grow our organization. Over the years, we have grown our volunteer base into what we are today. It has been an incredible and heartwarming process. The individuals who have been willing to step up and take care of homeless animals and ones that are in a tough situation have made the journey very rewarding.”
