Moving More Than Your Boxes

Most people cringe at the thought of moving. Moving is believed to be one of the most stressful life changes for adults. But the actual act of moving doesn’t have to be a miserable experience if you hire the right moving team. Writer // Janelle Morrison

Y

ou Move Me Indianapolis is here to move you while raising the bar in the moving industry. In addition to the uniformed, highly-trained, and friendly team of movers, You Move Me offers a full menu of services while placing customer service at the top of its priorities. Your moving team will even show up on the morning of the move with a cup of fresh coffee to get the experience off on the right foot. Communication is a close second priority after customer service for this moving company. You Move Me’s local franchise owner, Keith Moore, emphasized that direct and honest communication with his customers is vital to a successful move. A local resident, Moore appreciates the importance of providing exceptional service in his community and throughout his service area. He also understands the need to ensure his customers that his team consists of highly-skilled team members who have gone through background checks and extensive training before they are permitted to move the customers’ belongings. “A large part of what differentiates us from our competition is our level of communication,” Moore said. “We stress that during the on-site estimating meeting and again when our team arrives at the customer’s house on moving day. We will conduct another walk-through to reconfirm what is moving, what is staying, and what may be left that needs to be packed. We will also inspect the items before we move them and report any damage, stains, cracks, etc., that may be discovered so that we are keeping that open and honest chain of communication throughout the entire process.” You Move Me will leave no furniture surface uncovered or exposed. The 24-foot and 20-foot moving trucks are packed with materials and equipment to help make the move seamless and less stressful for the homeowners.

Efficient, accurate estimate, honest, professional, friendly, and pleasant to work with. Keith did a great job of walking us through the process and coordinating the move, and Trellis ran the team of movers effectively to make the process as pleasant as it can be.” - Nick Zaborenko, Indianapolis

“There are currently 12 members of our team, and as we ramp up into the summer ‘moving season’, we will bring on 20-25 team members to ensure our ability to serve our customers seven days a week,” Moore explained. “We are always looking for people who love the customer interaction and who want to be part of a team atmosphere.” You Move Me is a family-owned business, embedded in the local community, that builds relationships with other businesses and organizations. Moore, along with his family and team members, believe that it is important to be part of a bigger team and is active in the Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County. If you are actively considering moving or are looking to store some furniture in an off-site ZIONSVILLE MONTHLY

he Indiana Ballet Conservatory, an organization that has garnered a national and international reputation in ballet instruction excellence, recently announced its schedule for this summer’s camps. The IBC will be offering two camps with each designed to serve a different age group and level of proficiency. For children ages 3-5 years old the IBC is offering its 7th annual Summer Storybook Camp and for students 6-9 years old it is offering the 8th annual Young Dancer Intensive. Each of the camps are open to boys and girls. The Summer Storybook Camp is a great way to introduce your young child to the wonders of ballet while they are having fun. The day is divided into segments of formal ballet instruction, a story time that introduces them to the literature and stories behind some of the great ballets and an activities/crafts session geared toward developing a better understanding of the world of ballet. This camp runs from June

5-16 and will be taught by IBC Preparatory Division instructor and a former graduate of the school, Courtney Messier. Campers can attend the entire two-week camp or just for a single week. The camp runs from 9:00am-12:00pm with early drop off and late pick up also being offered. No prior ballet training is required. As the name suggest, the Young Dancer Intensive is geared for a student with some ballet training. The IBC recommends that campers have a minimum of 1 year of training. This camp runs from June 5-23 for ages 8-9, with a one-week offering from June 19-23 for ages 6-7. The Young Dancer Intensive is offered as a complete program that includes instruction in ballet technique, original choreography, conditioning/stretching, historical dance, and seminars on nutrition and wellness. The camp runs from 9:00am1:00pm. The Young Dancer Intensive will be taught Hailey Agran, the Head of the IBC Preparatory Division and has been teaching this program for several years.

One of Zionsville’s own, Mikayla Koharchik, was named Zionsville Teacher of the Year at the end of the last school year and went on to become a top three finalist for the Indiana Teacher of the Year. Koharchik teaches language arts at Zionsville Middle School and is the musical director at Zionsville High School. She was raised in the community by her parents, Greg and Jann Reed and currently lives here with husband, Ryan, and their two sons, Reed, age four, and Rowan, age two.

he majored in English literature at Miami University of Ohio where she was heavily involved in theatre and an acapella group. After graduation, she applied with Teach for America, a national program that recruits graduates who commit two years to teaching in low-income communities to develop and mobilize the nation’s promising future leaders. Koharchik taught in the south

Bronx for two years before returning to her hometown. “While I was teaching in New York City, I received my master’s in teaching at Pace University,” Koharchik said. “After my two-year commitment, I was missing my family and my community. New York was great, but in a city where you are surrounded by millions of people, it can feel lonely. I was ready to come back to my community where people knew me.

I accepted a position at ZMS in 2005, and it was the best decision that I’ve made to come back home.” Upon returning, Koharchik became active in the Booth Tarkington’s Civic Theatre, where she performed in several productions and was cast in roles such as Aida, The Little Shop of Horrors, and others. It was there that she met the lighting and set designer, Ryan Koharchik, and the two were married not long after they met. Koharchik and her husband decided to move to Zionsville and raise their family. After having their first son, she decided to take a hiatus from acting to focus on her work at the school and raising her sons. “Ryan is my creative collaborator,” she explained. “He is my lighting and set designer for the high school shows. I directed at the middle school level from 2007 to 2012 before accepting the position as musical director for Zionsville Community High School in 2013. I love helping the students develop their passion for theatre and their skills. Theatre has taken me so many places. The beauty of having started directing at ZMS and having transferred to the high school is that I have students that I have directed for eight years in a row. It has truly been a gift that we have had that long of a run together and for me to have watched them develop as performers has been rewarding. The arts, including theatre, is a great way students to be creative and boost their confidence.” Koharchik continued, “When I look back at the defining moments of my life, I don’t think of a test or a grade that got. I remember a teacher telling me that I was

Koharchik performed as Amneris in her first Civic show, Aida, in 2007.

When our students look back they’re not going remember a test, and they probably won’t remember the basic educational lessons, but they will remember the connections that we’ve made with them. That is one of the reasons why I like teaching. Teaching is a performance, and I’m a performer at a heart. Performing and teaching are both about making connections with fellow artists and the audience with whom we engage. We give our students the oppor-

tunity to be creative and to make connections with each other, their teachers, and with themselves.” After being named the Zionsville Teacher of the Year, Koharchik advanced to the top 10 teachers in the state and interviewed with the former Teacher of the Year. Koharchik was surprised with a visit from representatives with the Department of Education and former Teachers of the Year who observed her while teaching class, during the interview process. She also submitted a 20-page portfolio. In

the fall of 2016, she was notified that she had made the top 10 and in November, she was named a finalist in the top three. “I felt undeserving because I had never expected to be named let alone make the top three,” she said. “There are so many other deserving teachers, and I am just one of so many incredible educators that are out there in our communities. It was a whirlwind that I just had never expected, but it opened my world in such a big way, and I got to meet other amazing educators from the other school districts. I was able to meet with people, including former Superintendent Glenda Ritz, who share my passion for language arts and theatre.” Koharchik is pleased to announce that this year’s Fall Musical for ZCHS is going to be Les Miserables and also honored to announce that she will perform in her first role since her six-year hiatus as Marian in the Civic’s upcoming production of The Music Man in Carmel, Indiana.

Habitat for Humanity Builds Tools for Life Writer // Cindy Argentine

Habitat for Humanity builds about three houses a year in Boone County. But anyone close to the program knows they are constructing much more than that. They are building relationships, financial independence, and a culture of generosity.

LEFT Liz Qua, executive director of Habitat in Boone County

J

eri Veach experienced this firsthand. She was living in a brandnew apartment in Lebanon with her preschool daughter when she learned about Habitat. She thought, “I’d love to own my own home, but there’s probably no way I can do that.” Then she went to a Habitat orientation meeting. “By the end of the hour, they had answered all my questions and given me an application,” Veach says. A month later, she had turned in her paperwork and started the process. That was the fall of 2007. A year later, she moved into her new home. Now, nearly ten years after that first meeting, Veach is on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity of Boone County. She assists with wall-builds and

landscaping days whenever new Habitat homes are under construction. She serves on the Family Selection and Nurturing committees and acts as a mentor to new homeowners.

So Who Does Habitat Serve? “Before I got involved with Habitat, I thought there was no way I would be approved for a Habitat house,” Veach says. “I was working, I had a decent job, and I didn’t qualify for any other assistance.” But as she learned, Habitat homes are precisely for people like her – people who have a stable annual income in the $25,000 to $40,000 range, but whose current housing is inadequate. What made her brand-new apartment “inadequate”? It’s high cost. She was pay-

“Building Futures” Fundraiser 2017 Habitat for Humanity of Boone County is hosting a fundraiser on March 11, 2017 in the Cardinal Room at the Golf Club of Indiana. This gala event will begin with happy hour at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and a program at 7 p.m. The Murray-Weirich quintet will provide live music. Attendees may participate in a live auction to raise money for all the components of a house, from the lot to the roof, during the event. Tickets are $50, and you may register to attend using the following link: hfhbc.ticket.qtego.net.

Interested in Owning a Habitat Home? Orientation meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. They are located at the office in Lebanon at 817 W. Pearl Street. Information on the requirements and a copy of the application are available online at www.habitatboonecounty.org.

ing a high percentage of her income on rent. Many times inadequate housing is overcrowded or has structural problems. In other cases, like Veach’s, it is simply not affordable. Liz Qua, executive director of Habitat in Boone County, says many people have the same misconceptions as Veach. “I know there are plenty of people who qualify that aren’t applying!” Qua says. One of her goals is to get the word out and encourage more families to apply. She says manufacturing jobs and service jobs that pay $15-16/hour or more could meet their criteria. “Habitat is a well-known brand,” says Qua. “But I want it to be a household name in Boone County. It’s a cool thing to have a house. We build great homes.” Veach agrees that it is totally worth applying. “If I were still renting, I’d be financially doomed and in tremendous debt. Now I’m able to afford extra things, like putting my daughter in sports.” Qua said that the last owners to whom

ABOVE Hunter, Nikki, Kiley, Renesmae, and Ariel. Happy homeowners in December from the 2016 Women Build

she presented closing documents kept staring at her as if in shock. The papers showed a house payment of $398 a month including escrow. “The homeowner was absolutely stunned that it was going to be that cheap,” says Qua. “So not only are they getting a new house, at an affordable rate, but they also then have additional income, which we encourage them to save.” Home ownership has intangible benefits, too. “In the apartment, my daughter couldn’t look out and see all her friends’ bikes lying in the yard and all the neighborhood kids out playing. We couldn’t just sit on our front porch and watch the trees across the street,” Veach says.

How Does Habitat Work? Habitat manages all aspects of building and financing its homes. Although the Boone County Habitat staff is small – Liz Qua and a handful of part-time employees – the number of volunteers is tremendous. Sue Burks is assistant executive director and volunteer coordinator. She says there are about 3,000 volunteers and donors in their database. One build alone last year attracted 350 volunteers. Some are one-time helpers; others help repeatedly. Many do construction; others bring in lunch. Habitat is also the lender. It provides homeowners a 25-year mortgage based on the actual cost to Habitat for the home. This cost is often substantially less than the appraised value of the home because so many materials and labor costs are donated. For example, a recent house appraised at $130,000, but the actual cost

ZIONSVILLE MONTHLY

Zionsville_2017_March_Habitat_v2.indd 2

15

was close to $90,000. Qua says a forgivable second mortgage covers the $40,000 difference. “Homeowners never pay it, but that just protects us. Our goal is to put people in a house, not to have them flip it for a profit,” says Qua. To keep this process working, Habitat needs a large amount of seed money. As Qua explains, “The mortgage money trickles in as monthly payments. That is what we use for administrative costs. All of the money we raise from donors goes toward the building of the house.”

The Partnership Model Liz Qua was drawn to Habitat because of its philosophy. She assumed the role of director at the beginning of 2017 after long-time director Steve Furste stepped down. Like most of the staff and volunteers, Qua followed her heart to the position. Her first career was as a commercial airline pilot. She loved flying, but when her children were born, she decided to stay home to raise them. For the past 10 or 15 years she has been volunteering with her church and various nonprofits. She got involved with Habitat a couple of years ago and enjoyed working with her fellow staff and volunteers. When this leadership position opened up, she decided to accept it. The cooperative model of Habitat, established by Millard Fuller in 1976, resonates with her practical, can-do, Christian ethics. “His dream was to have a partnership with homeowners so that they would have a hand-up instead of a hand-out, so they would work towards a house along with volunteers and the community.”

MARCH 2017

2017-02-22 3:32 PM

Jeri Veach, the Habitat homeowner who now serves on the board, was also attracted to this model. “I wasn’t looking for a hand-out. I just wanted a little help. Habitat showed me that if I was willing to partner with them, they could help me.” The partnership they are referring to is known as “sweat equity.” Habitat homeowners are required to invest at least 200 hours in building their house or performing other community service approved by Habitat. “One reason I think I appreciate my house so much is that I was able to put my own sweat into it,” Veach says.

Beyond Building Houses Sue Burks has been on the Habitat staff since 2012. Before that, she spent seven years as a volunteer. As she says, “The first time I volunteered on a site was because as a kid I did a lot of building with my dad. Somebody at church grabbed me and said, ‘You can do this; come out and help us!’ and then I was just hooked.”

She says people know about Habitat from a building standpoint, but “we want to market ourselves as a service organization for our homeowners.” They do much more than hand homebuyers the keys. Kevin Schmidt, for example, is a Zionsville financial professional who teaches a course on budgeting and money management to prospective owners. Others conduct orientation meetings, review applications, and coach families one-on-one as they work through the sweat equity requirements and other logistical details. Veach treasures the relationships she has made through Habitat. As she says, “I feel like a gained a family as well as a home. I probably never would have crossed paths with people like Kevin and

Liz, and now I consider them my friends. All the staff, all the volunteers, are so encouraging. They want to do everything they can to see homeowners succeed.” Veach recalls the day when a Habitat volunteer befriended her daughter, Grace. “She was four years old, and they gave her this little tiny hammer, and she was able to pound a nail into a piece of wood that went into our house.” Grace, now twelve, has grown up in her Habitat house. She goes with her mom to construct walls and put in landscaping for new houses. “When I think about Habitat, I think about helping someone in need you don’t even know,” she says. “I think I will keep it up when I’m an adult.”

Tennis Anyone? New Tennis Complex with Star Power Comes to Zionsville Writer // Ann Craig-Cinnamon • Photography // John Cinnamon

Zionsville has a new, state-of-the-art tennis center, the Pearson Automotive Tennis Center. According to founding director Rick Witsken, it’s the first such complex built in the Indianapolis area in 25 years. Located at 4560 South C.R. 875 East, the center provides eight USTA regulation-sized, climate-controlled tennis courts, a guest lounge, viewing platform, men’s and women’s locker rooms, and online registration and court reservation. It was established as a 501(c)(7) not-for-profit corporation.

W

itsken has been a tennis player or coach for 39 years beginning at age seven. He was a two-time state champion in high school and twotime All-American at the University of Alabama and played professionally for three summers. He founded the Tennis Center as a way to honor the memory of his brother, Todd Witsken, who died at age 34 of brain cancer in 1998. Todd was a three-time All-American at the University of Southern California and pro tennis player who reached a career high ranking of number 43 in the world in singles and number four in doubles. His most memorable win was at the 1986 U.S. Open when he beat five-time U.S. Open Champ Jimmy Connors.

Before starting the Pearson Automotive Tennis Center (PATC), Rick started a company called “Team Witsken” which offered tennis programs on two indoor courts at an apartment complex in northwest Indianapolis for 17 years. During summers, Team Witsken offered programs at fifteen different sites in Zionsville, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield and Noblesville. Four years ago Rick and three friends started talking about building a tennis center in Zionsville. “I wanted to honor my brother in a more explosive way than a two-court apartment complex,” says Rick. What began as a vision for four guys has turned into reality. “Certainly not easy to get this vision to come to fruition seeing as how there hasn’t been an indoor tennis center built in 25 years

in Indianapolis,” says Rick. He adds, “We wanted to create a community center, a not-for-profit that would be awesome, not just for the city of Zionsville but the outlying communities as well.” The center’s location is fitting as Todd lived just a mile down the road from it. Pearson Ford stepped up and supported the center by becoming the title sponsor. Rick says families starting jumping in as founding members to help get it off the ground. Armed with this support and a bank loan, the vision became a reality. The center is now up and running and offering tennis lessons. At full strength, the Pearson Automotive Tennis Center will offer lessons, clinics, leagues, and pickleball classes. It plans to host premier tournaments at

the local and district level, with the goal of holding national tournaments as well. High schools in the area will have the opportunity to use the facilities when needed. The mezzanine area will have ping pong tables and big screen televisions and offer a place for people of all ages, especially young people, just to come and hang out. Witsken says he spent a lot of time and effort finding the right staff to embody Todd and Team Witsken. “We have a staff that is operating under a team approach, not isolated pros with their isolated students. It is a full-team approach. Our goal is to save lives by getting kids off their cellphones and off their electronics and enjoy a healthy active lifestyle. And adults, too,” says Witsken. He says that the PATC has the highest level of expertise in the state of Indiana. One of the people that Rick recruited was P.A. Nilhagen, who was both his and Todd’s coach. Nilhagen, who is originally from Sweden, has taught tennis for 44 years. He made the Junior Davis Cup team at the age of eighteen before winning a scholarship to Western Kentucky University. After graduating in 1973,

he was offered a job as head pro at the Northeast Tennis Club on Shadeland Avenue in Indianapolis. His next teaching gig as director of junior development at Washington Township Schools lasted 39 years. That’s where he met and coached the Witsken brothers, and he’s coached Todd’s son, Tyler, too. Coach Nilhagen reminisces about his protégé, Todd, proudly proclaiming that he was ranked Number one in the world in doubles for a couple of weeks and rattles off many of Todd’s statistics. He says he was privileged to be able to travel the world with Todd to many of his tournaments. He had nine wins over top 10 players in the world and five of those were in Grand Slam tournaments. Being part of Team Witsken is second nature to Nilhagen, and he’s very pleased with what he has seen so far at PATC. “I think the design is excellent and the quality is top-notch. I’ve not seen a club like this in the Midwest in a long time. I think the unity of the staff will be a very big plus. We’re all going to work together as a team, which is something you don’t see in a lot of clubs in this business. Egos are a little bit on the line all the time,” says Nilhagen. Another person Witsken brought on board as a teaching pro is Stephanie Hunn, who grew up with Rick and was also coached by Nilhagen. She was an All-American at Indiana University and played on the Women’s Tennis Association Tour from 1992-1996. Hunn, who has been teaching tennis since 1996, likes the yearround and community aspect of PATC.

“There’s definitely a need. The big draw is getting those kids that would normally play elsewhere staying in Zionsville year round or starting to play year round, and adults, too.” And she believes it will provide a great and safe environment. Kurt Ehrhardt is director of men’s tennis and will run men’s and junior clinics. Ehrhardt describes himself as “obsessed” with tennis after playing at Brownsburg High School and then earning a scholarship to Indiana State. He taught tennis in Indianapolis, French Lick, Kokomo, and Muncie. Then in 1980 he had an opportunity to teach in Germany. Ehrhardt ran several academies across Europe started by well-known tennis guru Vic Braden before opening his own academy. But Indiana is home, and he returned here in 2007, serving as director of men’s tennis at Five Seasons from 2008-2016, as well as working in junior development at Five Seasons and Washington Township. He has high hopes for the PATC. “I’m excited that tennis is getting away from the country club and going into a community setting. Because it’s a non-profit, I think that adds another dimension that everyone can come and play and learn a sport for a lifetime, says Ehrhardt. He summarizes why he feels tennis is such a great sport: “First of all, it’s very healthy for everybody of any age. Second, they can play it for a lifetime. Three, it’s very structured, which kids need nowadays. And it’s a mental, physical, and emotional game. All three of those combined prepares people for life very well,” says Ehrhardt. Rick Witsken agrees. “It’s a lifelong sport. Tennis is proven and ranked number one in personal growth and development, and I can honestly say that every kid I’ve coached for 17 years through Team Witsken has gone on to be successful. I don’t recall one student who was a dropout, a failure, a druggie, nothing like that. Tennis molds people the right way,” he says. Beth Chappo settles into an armchair at Starbucks. She could easily be mistaken for a fashion model. Her blond locks are perfectly coiffed. She’s clad in a stylish ensemble that includes skinny jeans, sneakers, and a hipster jacket. What’s immediately apparent is that Chappo knows fashion; the fact that she runs a popular fashion blog is unsurprising.

eersucker and Saddles, Chappo’s blog, receives over 150,000 page views a month and attracts a large national following. Southern Living magazine calls Chappo a “Blogger to Watch.” In 2016, Indianapolis Monthly magazine named her site “Best Style Blog.” Readers flock to Chappo’s blog for the fashion, but also for her warm, conversational tone. Chappo writes like she’s gabbing with a girlfriend. Followers feel a connection that transcends the computer screen. Chappo’s real-life persona mirrors the image she portrays upon her blog. She is affable and witty. Most importantly, she is passionate about the things she loves: her blog, her family, and her new hometown in Zionsville. Photographer and friend Megan Gilbert says, “Beth has such a fun and quirky personality that shows in her style. She is so down-to-earth and relatable. If you aren’t able to know her personally, her blog is the perfect place to meet the real Beth!”

Chappo’s real-life persona mirrors the image she portrays upon her blog Five years ago, Chappo started the blog as a hobby. It was a creative outlet for a girl who always loved fashion. As her blog grew in popularity, Chappo left her pharmaceutical sales position to work full-time on the blog and her personal styling business. In blog posts, Chappo features her self-proclaimed “glamorous, feminine, tomboy” look. She mixes designer wardrobe items with affordable pieces. Chappo recommends investing in quality key pieces that are versatile and intermixing with

less expensive finds. National clothing stores are showcased on her blog, but she also promotes local boutiques. In photos, Chappo proudly shows off her new hometown. Locations around Zionsville, Carmel and Indianapolis provide a dominant backdrop. The name Seersucker and Saddles is a nod to her roots and former residence. A year ago, Chappo moved to Zionsville from Lexington, Kentucky. She was raised in Jupiter, Florida. “Seersucker reminds me of a nautical and beach club,” Chappo says. “Saddles remind me of Lexington and its horse farms.” Chappo landed in Zionsville when she married her husband John Chappo, a physician at Hendricks Regional Health. She shares with readers her journey with her husband and other past experiences. Chappo reveals her highs and the lows in blog posts. The last several years have been difficult, Chappo admits. In 2013, Chappo went through a divorce. Two years later, Chappo’s ex-husband died unexpectedly. She refers to that day as “hands-down the hardest part of my life.” Chappo felt compelled to divulge these events to her readers. “I didn’t want people to look at the pictures in my blog and believe it was all roses and rainbows,” Chappo admits. “The blog was therapeutic. I received such sympathy, empathy, and support from my readers.” Husband John appreciates that his wife is able to share her journey with readers. “I actually quite enjoy when she’s personal on her blog. People want to see her real life, and I respect that,” John asserts. Chappo has two daughters Campell and Chase from her first marriage. The newfound family of four has settled into Zionsville. In the future, Chappo is hoping to expand her brood to a party of five. Along with the blogging, Chappo styles clients and organizes closets. When asked about her readers, Chappo tears up with gratitude. “I’m a normal gal who has clearly gone through nonsense with a little sense of humor,” Chappo says. “I want people to know that I appreciate that they allow me to do what I love.”

On Point and Moving Ahead Writer // Janelle Morrison

According to Mayor Tim Haak, Zionsville has a lot going on this year and much to look forward to. From the health of the town’s economy, improvements to its infrastructure, and growth in both the residential and business sectors, there is no question as to why people are attracted to this growing town that maintains its unique charm. The local economy “We’ve got one month of revenue in from the public safety tax, the LIT funding [local income tax], and that is really going to change things,” Haak said. “We are working through validating the LIT funding that once validated, everything else will piggyback off that including our road budget. That will increase and we will revamp our budget so the 2018 budget will look completely different than what it has in the past. The public safety dollars will increase while increasing funds for our road dollars and park dollars. The town’s overall financial stability is much more stable than where it was a couple of years ago. Assessed values are increasing and the commercial projects like LIDS and FedEx are finally getting onto the tax rolls. “Our goal of an 80-20 percentage breakdown of residential and commercial tax

revenue by 2020 is on track. Nine years ago, when I came on the town council, we were at 95 percent residential. We are currently in the 87-88 percent range. That is a big needle to shift and is a healthy stat for the community. That progress is due to the group efforts of the council members and staff. The business model of being a primarily residential community doesn’t work anymore with property tax caps.”

Business Development “In addition to housing the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, we are talking with another group about moving in the other space up there in the new Town Hall,” Haak stated. “The discussions continue with businesses that are interested in the parcels that will be available for development once the old town hall is demolished. We are in early stage

discussions with a number of people and companies in regards to Creekside. Some of the businesses are local and some are from outside of Zionsville.”

Infrastructure “We are moving forward with our projects slated in 2017 while planning for future road and infrastructure projects,” he explained. “It is definitely a focus for us, with projects in the works that will address drainage issues, aging roads, and our intersections. We are moving forward with the stop light installation at the intersection of Oak Street and Kissel Road to improve that situation. It will eventually be upgraded to a double-lane round-a-about that would necessitate approximately $1.6 million in additional funding. The round-a-about scheduled for installation at the intersection of Mulberry Street and Ford Road will begin

after school has let out for the summer. We are also working on two joint projects with the county roads 700E and 550. Those will be redone and repaved and of course, the pathway along 700 E and E 550 S will be constructed. The 96th Street and Zionsville Road intersection will be completed this summer. The contracts were awarded, and we are moving ahead. We are looking at 2018 for the 96th to 106th Street improvements along Zionsville Road. All the residents are aware of the project, and we’ve had a couple of meetings with them on this matter. When we get to 30 percent design and engineering phase, we will have a public meeting to discuss what the road will look like and additional details at that time.”

ident and vice-president of the council every Friday. It is nice to continue the history of having common goals with the members of the council.”

Making Zionsville marketable “Companies like MOBI and hc1.com and the inclusion of zWORKS in the business sector have really helped market Zionsville to other businesses, their employees, and the millennial, gen Y, etc., demographics,” Haak explained. “It’s the entrepreneurial type jobs that attract that demographic and the fact that we’re one of the only co-working spaces that’s

New Town Hall President Elizabeth Hopper took office in January. “I’ve known Elizabeth for almost six years,” Haak said. “She was part of that early 80-20 by 2020 process. We have great lines of communication with her and the council. We meet with the pres-

really in the heart of a downtown. They walk around town, and they spend their dollars on Main Street. We’re looking to expand zWORKS and when companies ‘graduate’ from zWORKS, we assist in helping find a place for them to stay here. Once people come here, they fall in love with it and they want to keep their businesses here and raise their families here. What’s exciting to see are the existing businesses reinvesting in their businesses. The remodeling project at Cobblestone is a great example of updating and adapting with the times and evolving demographic. Rush on Main is successful, and their customers enjoy the venue despite being located on a second floor. Noble Order, which doesn’t serve food, is another awesome place and tasting room. I know that my family enjoys the variety that I didn’t have while growing up in Zionsville.”

Welcome to our

home improvement special With the unbelievably warm weather the Indianapolis area enjoyed at the end of February, we can’t help but tempt fate and begin to think that maybe spring is coming soon. Whether this unseasonably warm weather continues or old man winter gives us one more shot, the calendar does tell us that spring is, thankfully, just around the corner. Therefore, now is time to plan those spring projects that you have been thinking about all winter. ZIONSVILLE MONTHLY

Start with a Plan Before you start any projects to enhance the curb appeal of your home or expand your outdoor living area, the pros at Noll Landscaping suggest that you formulate a plan. Among the things to consider in developing a plan is to critically examine your existing trees and foliage. Ask yourself if the existing plants enhance or detract from your house, and if can they be trimmed, pruned, or need

replacing? The answers will go a long way in determining whether you have a DIY project or you need to bring in professional assistance. Whether it’s a DIY project or you hire a professional to do all or a part of the project, Noll Landscaping also suggests that the landscaping plan include using timeless materials, that it have a point of interest or enjoyment, and that it incorporate materials that will provide yearround color. Don’t forget that adding outdoor lighting not only increases the beauty of the home but also its security. Dan Weingart of Green Image Landscape indicated that it’s important to develop a sense of what your goals are and

incorporate those in your DIY plan or share them with your professional landscaper. For example, are you an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys yard work, or are you looking for something low maintenance? You should also consider the location from which you plan to enjoy the area. Where will you be sitting when you will be taking advantage of the view? Dan also said it’s helpful if you do a bit of homework to get a sense of what you like and do not like. Sharing your likes and dislikes can save you and your landscaper a great deal of time and money. Dan points to the innumerable websites and design magazines sources to use to get a sense of what works for you.

Do I need a Professional Provided you have the time and desire, there are many things such as spreading mulch, cleaning out beds of leaves and debris, and pulling weeds that many of us can do without the help from a professional landscaper. However, if you’re planning on doing anything beyond these maintenance projects, you may want to bring in a professional. In particular, if the project includes building any new structures, you probably want to consult a professional who knows and understands the regulatory, permitting and homeowners association issues that could play havoc with your plans. If you expect to have any permitting issues, address them in the planning stage, advises Dan Weigart.

In choosing a professional, Catherine Simpkins of Green Lawn by Design understands that finding the right lawn and landscape professional can feel overwhelming. However, Simpkins advises, “The good news is that it doesn’t have to be difficult if you know what questions to ask.” The questions that Simpkins recommends asking are: • Do they have a great reputation? • Are they up on the latest technologies? • Do they have proper credentials? According to Simpkins, a professional lawn care provider is required by law to have proper licensing and certification to apply any chemicals used on your lawn. Simpkins also emphasized that as an added service they focus on helping potential clients through educating them on traditional lawn care, organic treatments, and setting proper expectations. This may be something you look for in hiring your professional.

Looking for Something Special to Complete the Project With any project, we are always looking for that one thing that makes it special. If your project includes a concrete walk, concrete deck or concrete patio the guys at Lanex Development, certified installers of Rubaroc™, can finish that ugly,

gray surface in a way to make it truly special. As the name suggests, Rubaroc™ lays down a layer of man-made EPDM rubber on top of the concrete. Unlike concrete or epoxy-painted concrete finishes, the texture of a Rubaroc™ surface makes it slip-resistant. Because it is air and water permeable, it is also anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. Quite simply, water does not puddle on a Rubaroc™ surface because the water can move through it. While the Rubaroc™ surface has a number of physical attributes that make it superior to plain concrete, it can be also very attractive. Do you have an old pool deck with cracked concrete? Cover it with Rubabroc™ and you can incorporate your company logo or that of your favorite team. Several professional sports teams have installed a Rubroc™ surface in their locker rooms. Another source for finding that special addition to any project is the folks at the Indianapolis Home Design Center. They

have relationships with a multitude of national home furniture and fixture manufacturers along with the people to assist you in finding that special addition. Their selection is unmatched. The Indianapolis Home Design Center offers top brands with a tremendous selection at irresistible prices. Unlike the big box stores, the Indianapolis Home Design Center lets you chose from a manufacturer’s entire line and is not limited to the items a national buyer thinks you might want and that will be most profitable for the store. With this spring-like weather, the landscapers and lawn care professionals’ schedules will be filling earlier than normal. So, if you want to get that project underway and completed before summer comes, we would suggest you begin the planning process immediately.

Danu: An Evening of Celtic Music

For over two decades Danú’s virtuosi players on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, bouzouki, and vocals (Irish and English) have delighted audiences worldwide. Winners of numerous awards from the BBC and Irish Music Magazine, Danú takes its audiences on a musical journey to their native Ireland, offering a moving and memorable concert experience.

Four-time Grammy-nominated Anoushka Shankar, “one of the greatest sitar players in the world” (Rolling Stone), presents Home: a pure Indian classical album and program that showcases the meditative and virtuosic qualities of the Indian raga. Indian classical music is not written down, but has been improvised and passed down through an oral tradition for centuries. Home is a paradigm of this genre, exemplifying the unique dichotomy between the ancient structure and inthe-moment improvisations.

Indianapolis Symphony Choir presents Mendelssohn’s Elijah

Often proclaimed “one of the greatest choral works ever,” Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah anchors the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir’s 80th Anniversary Season. Last performed by the Choir to mark its 70th anniversary season, Elijah has become a signature choral masterwork for the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir.
